Admissions Counselor for the Day

Sophomore students got to experience what college admissions counselors are looking for when they review applicants. Students were placed into groups and given sample applications and asked to look for things that really stood out to them. They had to work together to decide which applicant should be admitted and why. This exercise was directed at the Sophomores because now is the time students should be thinking about improving their grades, get-ting involved with extracurricular activities, volunteering, participat-ing in community events, etc in order to increase their chances of getting into the college of their choice.

Your Sophomore Year Checklist

Here is a list of items to be working on during your Sopho-more year. These are items that will help you in your fu-ture endeavors. Whether you choose to go to college, enlist in the military, or enter the workforce, this checklist will help you graduate! Check to see if and when you can take courses that

will earn you college credit. Continue to make good grades, join clubs, teams and

organizations. Meet with your counselor to make sure you are still on

track with your required classes. Talk with older kids about their plans for college. Ask

them if they wish they had done anything differently. Look into visiting some local college campuses. Create a file folder to include:

Copies of Report Cards

A list of awards and honors you receive (ie. Student of

the Quarter, Athlete of the Month, etc.)

A list of school clubs and community organizations you

join, including date of participation and any offices you held.

A list of jobs you have held (Volunteer and/or paid)

On November 15, 2017 over 1,500 high school students

from across Northern New York met with Watertown area

employers for Workforce 2020. It's an annual event where

students get to mock interview with area employers from

all different industries. The employers at Workforce 2020

represented a variety of industries including marketing,

agriculture, health and human services, and architecture

and construction.

“Workforce 2020 was a great experi-

ence. There were a lot of different

opportunities there in various fields.

The interview experience was very

beneficial , if you have never had

one. Overall, I loved it.”

“Workforce 2020 was a very educa-

tional opportunity. It helps develop

communication and socialization skills

that are needed to succeed in life.

Students gain knowledge and experi-

ence through these mock interviews.

It prepares young adults to experi-

ence the interviewing process to be-

come employed.”

Job Shadowing

As students make the transition from middle

school to high school, many of them begin think-ing about careers and what they will be doing

when they finish their education. On November 8th we offered an opportunity for students to

broaden their knowledge about careers and be-

ing in a work place environment. As part of our Home and Careers curriculum, the students

spent a day visiting an adult at work in the com-munity. This activity is commonly called “job

shadowing.”

Students benefited from this experience by:

observing a direct link between classroom

learning and successful performance in jobs and careers

developing an awareness of the importance

of positive work attitude values and habits

learning about a given job/career and com-

pleting an interview as outlined in the Home and Careers class

demonstrating what they have learned by

doing a visual display and giving an oral presentation.

Fourteen students were placed in a job shadow-ing experience by attending work with a parent,

family member or neighbor. Next semester we will be placing 91 students in a job shadowing

experience and will be looking for individuals

interested in hosting a student. Interested par-ties may contact Casey Nicol at 315-779-2300 or

emailing [email protected].

Mikel Fiske learned the ropes of pizza making at

Papa Tino’s Pizzeria in Watertown. He spent time

pressing dough, weighing out ingredients, stock-

ing products and even made his very own pizza.

According to Mikel, “It’s really fun! Although the work is hard, you

get paid well.”

Natalie Favret was able to spend

the day with her mother, Andrea

Favret , in a pharmacy. She was

able to watch her prepare IV medi-

cations and deliver medications

with the techni-

cians. She also

got to spend some time in the Lab with the

Pathologists and lab technicians where she observed

the doctor analyzing tissue specimens. Natalie said

“watching them analyze the specimen was very inter-

esting, and has me now considering finding a career

in the medical field.”

The Breakfast Club was created as a means of acknowledging some of our out-standing junior high students who put forth an excellent effort, as well as a positive attitude toward school. Students

were served bagels, donuts, & juice. They were joined by their teachers, administrators and school counselors. The administration and faculty would like to congratulate the following students who were nominated for the 1st Quarter:
