True to its tenets of always remaining technologically relevant, Voltas addresses one of the most pressing concerns of the millennium: the optimum management of increasingly scarce water resources, along with the need to minimize the ecological damage by dumping of untreated sewage and industrial effluents. Since its inception more than five decades ago, Voltas has been prominent in manufacturing of pumping systems, in collaboration with Sulzer of Switzerland. From this there was a natural evolution into the environmental sector in the early 70s, with Voltas being increasingly active in the fields of air and water pollution control solutions.
In 1977 a collaboration was formed for wastewater and sewage treatment know-how with Ames-Crosta Babcock (ACB) of UK, well known leaders in the field for decades. Voltas acquired specialized capabilities which were tried and tested in execution of major wastewater and effluent treatment plants all over India, and subsequently overseas. Over the years, Voltas continues to broaden its capabilities in the entire spectrum of water and wastewater management, including treatment water for potable as well as industrial usage. Voltas also manufactures a wide range of wastewater pollution control equipment. All this adds up to a well-rounded and comprehensive turnkey capability, which meets the highest international standards.

Water Purification
Capabilities
Ultrafiltration Ultrafiltration (UF) is a variety of membrane filtration in which forces like pressure or concentration gradients lead to a separation through a semipermeable membrane. With variety of UF membrane system we serve the industry from residential drinking water unit to industrial Zero Liquid Discharge System.
Nano filtration As a part of adopting energy efficient systems for the industry we continue to promote Nano filtration membrane system since its inception. Nano filtration is a relatively recent membrane filtration process used most often with low total dissolved solids water such as surface water and fresh groundwater, with the purpose of softening and removal of disinfected by-product precursors such as natural organic matter and synthetic organic matter.
Desalination System To meet desalination requirements of industry Voltas provides energy efficient Reverse Osmosis systems. Voltas RO system ranges from residential units to turnkey based municipal / industrial systems. As a part of adopting to new technology Voltas has constructed the world’s first commercial Forward Osmosis Plant for Modern Water UK at Najda, Oman in 2012.
Benefits of forward osmosis - A proven, reliable and robust membrane process - Energy consumption typically up to 30% lower than
conventional Reverse Osmosis (RO) - Inherently low fouling characteristics (both particulate and
biological fouling) - Significantly reduced product boron levels without post-
treatment when compared to conventional RO - Higher availability than a conventional RO plant due to low
fouling, simple cleaning and ease of operation

Odor Control Technology
Feature/Turnkey
Voltas re-engineered the original design for the MBR based multi-tank wastewater treatment to reduce the civil footprint and costs to the client, reduce the operating expenses on the high chemical requirements for the MBR fluxing as well as to cater to the possibilities of extreme swings in plant load based on compound occupancy flections with a large expatriate population.
A wastewater system with a sequential batch reactor (SBR) system from Siemens utilizes the SBR activated sludge process, which completes all unit process steps within the same reactor eliminating the need for both secondary clarifiers and a sludge recycle system.
This process also provides for inherent flow equalization and flow blending, and greatly reduces operator skill and attention requirements.
The complete process is controlled by a microprocessor based PLC system which is based on liquid level control switches located in the reactor basin. It serves to determine the movement of the process from one phase to the next and coordinate the sequences of the SBR system. The control system operates the plant according to a preset treatment strategy which is field adjustable to meet changing conditions or requirements.

Filtration System
Tertiary clarification is with a totally submerged and sealed membrane filtration system from Siemens that utilizes the latest low-pressure membrane technology to achieve a compact and robust advanced treatment package. It is an integral, factory-preassembled treatment plant that contains many of the operational features of the most advanced municipal facilities. The highly automated design provides many important features to meet the demands of the most stringent environmental requirements.
Output parameters of the SBR limit the BOD to less than 1% and the TKN to less than 3.
Voltas installed two odor control systems for Al Bustan headworks and lift station. The challenge was to provide an effective solution with high removal efficiency even at inlet H2S concentrations of 150 ppm with low operating costs and compact design. A two stage biological system with a backup carbon polishing unit was selected with a capacity of 350 m3/h treating Inlet H2S concentrations 100 ppm average and 150 ppm peak with a removal efficiency of 99% and higher. Similarly for the headworks a second, two-stage biological was installed treating inlet H2S concentrations up to 150 ppm at design airflow of 1850 m3/h. The main objective of this project was to provide Al Bustan with the best possible sustainable solution for environmental odor control.
