Navy OutdoorRecreation & Carney ParkAn interview with Michael Yates, Carney Park Operations Manager

By Amber VlangasMWR Marketing Director

With the Navy Outdoor Recreation Program (NOR) instituting someexciting changes and the ski season getting underway, Amber Vlangas, part of the MWR Volcano staff, took some time to catch up with Michael Yates, the newly appointed OperationsDirector for Admiral Robert B. Carney Park.

Amber: “Michael, thanks for taking the time to speak with us today. As we start off the new year, I am sure patrons will be excited to hear all about you, Navy Outdoor Recreation and Carney Park, so lets get right to it! What interests and skills led you to become the Carney Park Operations Manager?”

Michael: “Thanks, Amber I am happy to be here. I was interested in theposition because Carney Park is an amazing place. I get to work in an extinct volcano crater that has a golf course, swimming pool, campground, and sports fields. This combined with the fact I greatly enjoy the outdoors and being involved in the fantastic programs that the NOR Center provides felt like a great fit for me. There is a lot of potential for some new activities to be held at the park, and I really encourage the community to come out andsupport the facility.

www.facebook.com/mwrnaples 626.4050 / 081.568.40504

Being new at Carney, I’m hoping to bring a lot of people back out.Previously being a part of the Child and Youth Programs (CYP) allowed me to work with a lot of the Carney Park entities such as lodging for our Summer Art History Camp and the NOR staff for kayaking/white water rafting trips and on youth sports seasons. I also had the pleasure of working with our maintenance crew on special events, and I know that they are truly one of the hardest working groups around. As someone in the recreation field, I think that Carney Park Operations is a great place to be!”

Amber: “Where are you originally from?”

Michael: “I grew up in Santa Barbara, CA. After graduating High School, I moved to San Diego to attend SDSU and remained there until coming to Naples.”

Amber: “How long have you been with Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) and in what capacities?”

Michael: “I have worked with MWR/CYP in Naples since 2008. Prior to that, I worked in the Liberty Program at Naval Base Point Loma and Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command in San Diego. I started with MWR as an intern while attending San Diego State University (SDSU). It was a really great experience. Being able to work with various facilities, special events, and a lot of great people, allowed me to get an immense amount of background with MWR as a whole.”

Amber: “What are the main points that you would like the NSA Naples community to know about the Navy Outdoor Recreation program (NOR), which falls under your area ofresponsibility?”

NOR & Carney Park

Michael: “For Navy OutdoorRecreation, I think the most timely thing I would want patrons to know about is that our NOR Center has moved to the Support Site. All of our sports, outdoor gear, and party rentals can now be reserved and checked out from our new space that is located the Auto Wood Skills Center complex, near the back gate. The operating hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. and our busy season is upon us with the ski/snowboard season. The NOR ski shop opened at the Support Site on December 12 and our first ski trip will be on January 12. These trips are a lot of fun for the entire community, or if people want to go on their own we have a full line of winter sports equipment for rent.”

Amber: “What are the main points that you would like the NSA Naplescommunity to know about Admiral Robert B. Carney Park?”

Michael: “Think of Carney Park as an asset, not a hassle. A lot of people don’t take advantage of the opportunitiesassociated with having such a unique place. For patrons living on the economy it’s a great place to have a picnic, go for a walk/jog, or take advantage of the dog park. For those living on the Support Site, families can make a day of it by mixing in some time sightseeing, or shopping off base. The Fairways restaurant has changed things up with a new menu, which a lot of people might not be aware of. People are always talking about how crazy and hectic life in Naples is. When you’re in Carney Park you feel like you’re somewhere completely different, it is our little oasis. The drive from the Support Site is not that bad, I promise, and if you hike to the rim of the crater and take in the view from the top, it will absolutely be worth it.”

Amber: “Well, Michael it has been a pleasure speaking with you. On behalf of the MWR Volcano and our readers, I would like to wish you good luck in your new position.”

Michael: “Thanks, Amber, I enjoyed it. I hope to see everyone on our NOR ski trips this season and out at the park soon!”
