by Janet SpencerA lot has been said about hero dogs – but not all of them are heroes! Let’s take a look:• When Haroldo Renato Mota of Sao Paulo, Brazil let

his dog out one day in February of 2002, he knew there was a high likelihood that the dog would return carrying something he had found- a stick, a bone, a piece of trash. But the dog, a black and white mixed breed named Chumbinho, came back carrying something Mota didn’t recognize. He told the dog to drop it. Mota recognized it all right- a rusty hand grenade. He called police; police called the bomb squad; and the bomb squad detonated the grenade safely.

• Mark and Lara Tomlinson live in South Africa with their kids and their dog Digger. Digger is well named, perpetually burying and unbury bones. One day in February of 2002 when Digger began to dig industriously underneath the children’s playhouse, Mark became curious when another neighborhood dog, a puppy named Jack, joined in the excavation. Going to see what they were so interested in, he found to his alarm that the two dogs had uncovered a bomb. Police removed the 60mm mortar bomb left over from World War II. The playhouse had been built the previous April.

Appealing a Denied Medicare Claim

Every quarter you’ll receive a Medicare statement. It’s important that you inspect this form -- going over every item -- and look for mistakes. Kaiser Health News has issued a report showing how to handle any mistakes you find:If a claim is denied, you’ll want to take steps to appeal. 1. In nonreactive 5-quart Dutch oven, combine bacon and water; cook over medium-low heat un-til bacon is lightly crisped, about 4 minutes. Add onion and cook, stirring frequently, until onion is tender and golden, about 7 minutes.2. Add apples and cook until tender, about 3 minutes. Stir in sauerkraut, wine, juniper berries and bay leaf and heat to boiling. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 15 minutes.3. Nestle pork chops and kielbasa into cabbage mixture; cover and cook until pork is heated through and sauerkraut is tender, about 20 minutes. Discard bay leaf and serve. Makes 6 main-dish servings.

• In 1998 when Rachel Murray of Britain wanted to get a Christmas gift for her roommate, she decided to get him a cell phone. She wrapped it and left it under the Christmas tree. Unfortunately, her dog, a bloodhound named Charlie, enjoyed tearing the package apart while he was bored and unsupervised. Finding the mess but not the phone, Murray dialed the number, hoping to hear it ring. She heard it ringing- a muffled ringing, coming from inside Charlie’s stomach. “At first I though Charlie was lying on the phone- then I realized where it was. I couldn’t believe he’d swallowed it. I sat there in disbelief.” The vet advised her to let nature take its course, and 24 hours later, the phone emerged. The Orange Nokia was in perfect working order.

• Stinky, a six-year-old mongrel, enjoyed going hunting with his master, 30-year-old Kelly Russell near their New Zealand home. In December of 2000, Stinky, Russell, and another dog named Red were out hunting wild pigs. When Russell cornered a pig, he set down his rifle to pick up his knife and, in the ensuing chaos, Stinky jumped on the gun. “There was a big bang and my leg went flying back,” recalled Russell. The blast tore right through his foot. Unable to walk or drive and barely able to crawl, Russell endured a five-hour wait before someone came along who could help him. At the Waikato hospital, doctors were unable to save his foot. Stinky went home, unaware of the trouble he had caused, and Russell said he didn’t blame Stinky for the accident. Russell was charged with hunting illegally in an exotic forest. He collected $10,000 (New Zealand dollars) from the state-run insurance company for the accident, and was fined only $500 for illegal hunting.

• In the year 2000 in Ipswich, Massachusetts, Mark Meltz bought his fiancée Hillary Feinberg a lovely wedding ring. On the day before their wedding, he set the ring on the kitchen counter where he’d be sure to see it and remember to give it to the best man. That evening while walking his year-and-a-half old lab, Liza, he noticed the dog was coughing and hacking a lot, but he didn’t think anything of it- until he was unable to find the ring on the morning of the wedding day. Suspecting that the cat had knocked it off the counter and the dog had swallowed it, he rushed the dog to Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston, where vet Kathleen Wirth took an X-ray and confirmed his fears. At the wedding at 4:00 that afternoon, Hillary Feinberg presented Mark Meltz with a wedding band, and Mark Meltz presented Hillary Feinberg with an X-ray. The congregation burst into laughter. Meltz’s father

stood watch over the dog waiting for the ring to reappear while the couple went on their Hawaiian honeymoon.

• Garbage collector Glen Shaw operates a trash collection service in New Hampshire. He occasionally allowed his large Newfoundland dog named Bear to come along for the ride. But at 4:30a.m. on December 20, 2001, Shaw got out of the 10-wheeled compactor truck to load some garbage in the back. Bear somehow released the hand brake somehow, and the truck began to roll slowly forward. Shaw ran after the runaway garbage truck but was unable to catch it as it gained momentum, rolling down the road. It plunged into the Souhegan River, and Shaw plunged into the water in order to rescue the dog. The dog turned out to be fine, but it took a hazardous material team many hours to clean up the mess.

• In Oklahoma, the Dodson family left their three-month-old puppy in the utility room when they went out. They returned to find their home a pile of rubble. The pup somehow flipped the gas line switch, filling the room with natural gas. When the water heater kicked on, the gas exploded. The pup was hurled clear of the explosion, unharmed.

• Lyle Sneary and his dog Rancher were driving in a truck making the rounds of his Oklahoma cattle herd. Noticing a cow was down, Sneary got out of the truck, while the dog stayed inside. Sneary fed the cow hay out of the back of his truck. Seeing that dinner was being served, the rest of the cattle herd stampeded towards him. He began screaming to head off the herd, which caused Rancher to get excited inside the truck. The dog hit the automatic door lock. Then he knocked the gear shift into neutral. Seeing the truck rolling, Sneary jumped on the sideboard, trying to reach inside the window. He was unable to stop the truck and bailed out right before the rig hit a tree. Sneary and his dog had to walk a mile and a half to call for help. The officer who responded revoked Rancher’s license.

• Michael Staley and Jenna Lee Fetters left their black lab tied to an outdoor water spigot at their apartment in Montana while they went out. The dog pulled so hard on its leash that the spigot broke. The broken pipe flooded the apartment. The property manager entered the home using his pass key to shut off the water. Not only did he find the emergency water shut-off valve in the basement, but he also found 21 six-foot marijuana plants under cultivation in the basement. Police lieutenant Jim Neumayer was still searching the basement when Staley and Fetters returned. They were arrested on the spot.

For example, “Now it’s time to say night night, The sun has set, The moon is bright. Hyperactive DogDEAR PAW’S CORNER: As our adopted Australian shepherd, “Skip,” has grown, he has got-ten more and more hyperactive. He tears around the house from room to room, and if I don’t

catch him, he will chew up every shoe he can find. How can I stop this behavior? -- Carol in Tucson

DEAR CAROL: You probably won’t be able to completely change Skip’s behavior, because Australian shepherds are so naturally energetic. But that doesn’t mean you can’t curb that tearing around the house and the chewing to a manageable level.First and foremost, Skip needs more exercise. Lots more exer-cise. The shepherd breeds were developed to do exactly what he’s doing: run, run some more and run even more -- all day long. As working dogs, they were invaluable in helping to herd sheep in pastures. So just taking Skip out for a walk a couple of times a day isn’t going to cut it.Find a space where he can run off leash without disturbing other people or dogs, or if your yard is fenced, let him run there. Don’t just let him run alone. He needs to be supervised, and you should take the opportunity to work with him.That’s the second part of the solution. Work with Skip on ba-sic commands including sit, stay, (lie) down, etc. Add in play-ful games like fetch. Aussies are extremely intelligent, and you might be surprised at how quickly Skip learns to follow com-mands closely, especially once he’s worked off some of that ex-cess energy.Chewing up your shoes may happen less if Skip gets more run-around time. While dogs chew instinctively, anxiety can exacer-bate the problem. A slightly more relaxed Skip might curb the chewing, although you should still keep your more expensive shoes out of reach.

Were You in Okinawa for Project 112/

SHAD?Project 112, also known as SHAD, began in 1962 to test the vulnerability of ships to biological-warfare chemical attacks. SHAD (Shipboard Hazard and Defense) was conducted on ships. Project 112 was conducted on land. But the end result was the same: being sprayed with chemicals.While the Department of Defense admitted this went on in other locations, nobody mentioned Okinawa. Nobody mentioned Johnston Island. They’re not even on the list. When it comes to getting benefits for chemical exposure, the Department of Veterans Affairs has said there’s no specific illness related to service at those locations.Here are some items to jog your memory:The 267th Chemical Platoon was in Okinawa from December 1962 until August 1965, assigned to the Army Ordnance Group to prepare the Red Hat area Site 2 for receipt and storage of chemicals in DoD Project 112. If you were there, heads up.If you were part of Operation Red Hat in 1971 and moved the 12,000 tons of chemicals from Okinawa to Johnston Island, heads up.If you were there for training in 1972 and came across the barrels of chemicals that allegedly had already been removed, heads up.If you were at Futenma Air Station in 1981 when 100 leaky barrels of Agent Orange were unearthed, heads up. People are stepping forward, those who were there and were sprayed while handling the chemicals and who are now sick. They want the DoD to open the records.This is going to take time, but get ready. Teenagers Often Make Acne Worse

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am 17 years old. I have pim-ples all over my face. The only thing that helped was an antibiotic, but it made me sensitive to

sunlight. My parents don’t want me to continue to use an antibiotic. Can you help? -- G.G.

ANSWER: Let’s start with a couple of mistakes made by most people with acne. Don’t scrub your face or any place where acne has bro-ken out. Scrubbing causes irritation and worsens acne. Use a mild soap like Dove when washing. Don’t squeeze pimples, whiteheads or blackheads. You force bacteria into adjacent skin.Acne develops because of clogged pores through which hairs grow and through which sebaceous (oil) glands empty their oil onto the skin. The first signs of trouble are whiteheads or blackheads. They indicate that the pore is plugged. Deep in the pore, down from the blockage, the oil glands continue to secrete oil and greatly distend the pore, which can rupture. Bacteria thrive on the oil. At this point, a pimple is born. Acne control involves unplugging the pore, elimi-nating the bacteria and putting the brakes on oil production. The oil production is in high gear because of the increase of male hormones at this time in life.Benzoyl peroxide unplugs pores. Brand names include Clearasil and AcneClear, both available without prescription, as are many other

brands.From this point on, effective medicines require a prescription. The first choice is retinoids -- Renova cream and Retin-A. They’re often used on alternating days with benzoyl peroxide. The next step up is antibiotics. In creams and lotions, they aren’t absorbed very much. Clindamycin and erythromycin are two such products. If no progress comes from skin-applied antibiotics, then oral antibiotics are the next step. Tetracycline, doxycycline and minocycline are examples. Your parents should reconsider their ban on their use. Even if they sensitize you to sunlight, simply stay out of sunlight when using them. They worked for you. I haven’t listed all acne medicines. Bad acne, like yours, calls for treatment by the family doctor or a dermatologist.***DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am writing on behalf of several neighbors who have started soaking golden raisins in gin. Each of them takes nine such raisins a day. They claim this was a method shown on tele-vision to remedy arthritis. Have you ever heard of this? Our curiosity is getting the best of us. -- E.G.

ANSWER: I have heard this many times. No one has proven it works. No reliable information suggests it might work. I don’t believe it’s a legitimate arthritis treatment.However, if you like gin and like raisins, then the practice is OK, so long as you don’t go overboard on taking in too much alcohol.The booklet on arthritis describes the different kinds of arthritis and their treatments. How to Visualize Shots Around the GreensBy Roseanna Leaton

Every golfer knows that if you can get up on to the green and leave yourself with a makeable one putt you will shave a lot of shots off your score card and your handicap. Making those up and downs is the key to good scoring, and maintaining your momentum throughout your round. Each time you make one of them to save par you walk on to the next tee box filled with confidence. And good golf is built upon confidence.

There are many different ways to play those shots around the greens, utilizing a variety of clubs. You could, like Phil, use a 64-degree wedge or you might favor a sand wedge, seven iron or hybrid. Different positions and circumstances call for different shots. You need to feel comfortable with the club in hand and know how the ball will likely react when you connect with it. You need to know how far and how high the ball will fly before it lands and how far it is likely to roll after it lands.

These aspects of the short game depend upon experience, physics and practice. But before you choose your shot and the relevant club you have to see the desired shot. You have to assess the lie and the flag position and decide upon your optimal shot. For this you have to draw upon your store of knowledge and visualize the shot.

It is this visualizing that makes the shot possible. Seeing is believing. The more detailed your visualization the more belief and commitment you will have to the shot in hand. So you see the shot, choose your club and take your practice swings, feeling for the right amount of back swing and follow through to make that shot happen.

You get into your pre shot routine and this should involve seeing that shot again. This is where I have noticed a lot of amateur golfers make a mistake. I played with someone the other day and was reminded of a little trap that is easy to fall into. This golfer kept landing her ball right beside the pin, on one occasion actually hitting the pin.

I eventually asked if she was visualizing the shot. “Oh, Yes, I’m really good at that” came the response. So I asked her to describe her process of visualization. She described how she stands behind the ball and sees a direct line between her ball and the pin and sees her ball going there, and then keeps a strong image of the actual cup in her inner mind as she looks down at the ball and takes her shot. Hence the ball flying all the way to the flag before it lands upon the ground and then rolling a ways past.

She was visualizing in full technicolor, with a lot of detail. And the ball was following her inner eye. But she was giving the ball a slightly incorrect instruction. Once she instead began to visualize the spot where she wanted the ball to land, allowing for the amount of subsequent roll towards the cup she achieved a far more successful and satisfying outcome.

When you are planning to make more up and downs it pays to always walk up to the green, check the slope and grain and then choose the optimal place for your ball to land. Then you simply set up to your ball with a visual image of that spot in mind, clearly seeing the ball as it flies there, lands and rolls right into the cup.
