Ibar Editor:

Ore last thing about ali the nonsense regarding Beetle Bailey andwhetler or not tlle strip contains ideas offensive to vdnen.

Scnething bothered me about the letter frcrn retired zlt' TriciaCritdrfi;ld and I went back and re-read it. I had only skirmed itbefore, but nov I fotnd what uas nagging at me, aside frcm 2Lt.Critdrfield herself.

It was her phrase "..,perpetuating nisogynistic atterPts at hr.mor."I{e, rdsogynistic? Or Ki1ler, in the strip that offended her? I'tydictionary indlcates that the word refers to a hatred or distrustof wcrnen. Hardly the case with me or Killer.

I love women, of al1 ages, if they're nice people; and if tley arelovel.y to look at, so nuci the better. Wonen, like men, can bebeautiful at all ages, in all kinds of different ways. Killer, ayomg, nim, is particularly attracted to lovely young women, andthat's the way it should be, and always has been. If it were not so,the hunan race would be in big trouble. So I don't think watdtingyoung wqnen swiming through the water in brief attire, adniringtheir grace and physical form is an evil thing to do. It's Nhatwe all do u,hen we attend the ballet.

Perhaps the next tfune tlre good Lieutenant takes pen in h;nd, it willbe with a dictionary in the other hand and a goodly portion of tiatintuition at the ready uhidr the nembers of her sex are so noted for.

VMI superintendent cites falling-outBy Th. A.tocL!.d Rr.ar

LEXINGTON - Gen. SamS. Walk-er, superintendent of Virginia Mili-tary Institute since 1981, says his previously announced decision to stepdown at the end of t,he year stemmedfrom a fallingout with tle head of theschool's governing board.

Waller, 63, said he had planned toleave VMI soon, anyway. He said hisfl01.26ea-year job has been wearinghimout and thathe had completed alltte proixts the board assigned himwhen he was hircd.

Spivey said Walker has "done anexcellent job for us," crediting theretired four-star Army general withraising money for fecilities, addingacademic degree programs and supporting the militrry honor system.

VMI's official mission is to train"citizen-soldiers" who are "preparedfor the varied work of civil life" andare ready to defend their country "intirre of national peril."

Walker, a strong supporter of man-datory commissioning, said he wroteto Spivey after the June ll meetingseeking information on what the newcommittee was supposed to consider.

trtalker showed Spivey's four-para-graph reply to a reporter and said hewas particularly offended by a sen-tence that reads: "I think that youwould do yourself an injustice if youallow your personal views on thematt€r to become ensnarled with theboard's decision to continue to reviewtlte mandatory commissioning poli-cy."

"I thought that was a little curt andabrupt," Walker said. "You get some-lling like that and you just say, 'Well... to heck with it."'

THISTORIANI S REPORT

A long Eime ago a concept, was born--EhaL Lhe publishing of a HisEoryof the Division would generat.e int.erest in the Associ-aEion and give it,growEh. -Initially, Ehe book was Lo be auEobiographical in style, ergo iEstit.le - "An Autobiography of a Division" - wit,h each AssociaEion membercontribuEing t,heret,o. Thau plan led only to disast,er from the sEandpointof contribut, ions - quant.itywise and qualit, ywise.

As a mat,ter of facE, real supporE of t,he project., even as of today,is far from encouraging. 0n1y 700 plus of our 2800 membership haveindicat,ed supporE.

And if you haven'E supported t,he project, financially, t.hen t.he wholequesEion today is academic.

During the last 24 mont,hs, some 11 or 12 have writEen in, expressingdissatisfacEion or disappointment, In each case, we have polit.elyrefunded t.he monet, ary contribution. It, has seemed the only judicious wayto handle such problems.

The t.ruth is that, as mat.ters present.ly st.and, the work of Secretary-Treasurer-EdiEor-Historian consumes the great.er part of my working day, not, t,o ment.ion my evenings and weekends--as well as the prodigious effortsof Ewo gals Friday in my office where I am also dedicat.ed t.o t.he businessof t.rylng to earn my daily bread.

A neat,--and somet,imes not so neat--juggling acE is cont.inuouslyinvolved.

This is offered, noE as a complaint--the obvious should be sEaring youin the face--t.hat I love it,--it. is offered only to assure you t.haE I arn onebusy fellow.

The files, thankfully, are replete with sEatement.s from menrbers whoindicat,e thaE t,hey know, and are appreciat, ive. But, Ehere are the fewl l:....usually members who Ehemselves lift not a finger, and in several cases, don'E even pay dues. ThaE way lies chut.zpah.......... It. is E.hose fewwho really "hit, me in t,he belly".

There's irony in Ehe facE t,hat, t,he idea of the book was ours ab init,io.We conceived iE. The birter pill appears in E,he form of Lhe few who assumet, hat we are under a long overdue contract, ual conunit.ment. to conclude t,haEwhich we sEart,ed.

We ask only for an underst.anding t,hat. we are already well occupied, noE,only in the work of t.he Taro Leaf buE, also in ehe work of adminisE,ering ouroperaEion, taking in its receipEs, making its disbursernents, showing com-passion for the bereaved, t.he sick and wounded, responding to t.he unbeliev-able inquiries which run the gannrt, from A Lo Z, eEc., etc.--all in abona fide effort, to keep t.his organizaEion from foundering.

This AssociaLion has been my family, my love, my life for some 40 years.

I should haEe to see it, all come Eo an end with this meeEing--but ifyour patience witsh me now is Eotally exhaustedr, then it shall be so.

But letter carrier Howard W. Campof Xenia, Ohio Branch 1149 and thou-sands of other Korean War veteransvividly remember their experiences incombat and are working hard to gain

recognition for the men and women

who suffered and died in that war.As an active member of a newly

formed organization exclusively for Ko-rean War veterans, Camp is recruitingfunds for a national memorial to those

who died in the Korean conflict. Themonument will be built in Washington,

D.C., acrosi from the Vietnam Warmemorial.

"We want to promote the memoriesof the men and women who lost theirlives in what we think has become theforgotten war," he said.

The Korean War, which lasted from1950 to 1953, claimed more than twomillion lives, including 23,300 Americansoldiers. Americans fighting in that waralso suffered more than 100,000 cas-

ualties."I don't want to sound bitter," said

Camp, who as an infantryman in Koreareceived shrapnel wounds that left him

40 percent disabled."Yet so much more has been done

and said about Vietnam War veterans,

especially lately. I'd just like people toknow that Korean War vets had theirtragedies too--and we've suffered trau-

mas that few of us have been able totalk about."

Camp, a letter carrier for 12 years,

has worked hard to promote a national

memorial for those who died in the

Korean War. His branch has contrib-uted $100 to a national fund which iswell on its way toward making thememorial a reality.

Tribute to vetsThe Korean War Veterans Memorial

Advisory Board, appointed bY Presi-

dent Reagan, has received congres-

sional approval to build a monument on

a site close to the Vietnam War me-

morial. About $2.4 million of the $6 to7 million needed for the Project has

been received, mostly from private do-

nors, said Gen. R. G. Stillwell, chairman

of the advisory board.

A nationwide contest for a suitabledesigr was announced September 16,

Stillwell said, with a deadline for entriesof May 1, 1989. His board will select awinner from about 2,000 expected en-tries sometime next June.

Stillwe[, who commanded troops inKorea as well as in World War II and

Vietnam, agrees with NALC's Camp

that Korean veterans have been over-looked and under-acknowledged.

"There was no massive homecoming

as in World War II," Stillwell noted."Troops were redeployed out of Koreavery slowly. And we had not achieved

a clear victory, as in the world wars.We fought to a draw in Korea, and itended with a negotiated solution.

"The American public, even at thetime, was clearly less interested in what

happened in Korea than in Previouswars."

Buried memoriesUntil three Years ago, Howard CamP

never talked about his two Years of

combat in Korea, even to his familY'

"I just wanted to melt back into

society, " he said. Then he heard about

efforts to form an organization exclu-

sively for Korean War vets, the Korean

War Veterans Association (KWVA).

Since its formation, KWVA has been

raising funds for the national memorial.

Its efforts to increase national recog-

nition of Korean veterans also include

coordinating a ceremony each year in

Washington, D. C. on July 27 -the daLe

of the Korean armistice.

This year about 250 of KWVA's 3,000

members attended the ceremony, Camp

said-including 96-year-old James Van

Fteet, who was the commander of the

Eighth Army in Korea.

As soon as CamP joined KWVA, he

began making contact with othcr Ko-

rean veterans. He located an old combat

buddy living just a few miles awaY,

made friends with another Korean vet

in tlte arca wlxr had been a prisotler-

of-war for 33 months, and began talking

about the war for the first time with

his brother, who had also served in Korea'

"ln many waYS mY brother had a

tougher time than I did," CamP ob-

served, "even though I was the one

who got wounded."His brother had been through two

terrible battles in Korea-the 6rst in

which he was the only survivor out ofhis platoon, and the second in which hewas one of only three survivors in theplat<xrn.

"We never talked about the war,"Camp said. "So I never knew that for30-some years my brother was con-vinced he was a coward-because helived when so many men around himdied. When I got wounded, that made

him feel even worse, like he was doingsomething wrong because he hadn'tbeen wounded."

Just being able to talk to his brotherabout the war has been a relief for bothmen, Camp said. Through their con-versations, they have relived not onlythe bad moments---and there were plentyof them-but also the times when sol-diers in the midst of battle revealedtheir compassion for human life.

Heroic rescueCamp said his own life was saved by

a soldier who saw Camp get hit andcaried him piggyback offthe battlefield. The soldier put Camp iirto an Americantank, then was himself killed during anenemy artillery barrage of the tankformation.

"l'd like to find that man's tamilysomeday and tell them what a greatthing he did," Camp said.

He also remembers the compassionof the MASH unit nurses and medicswho cared for him before he was shippedto a field hospital for surgery.

"The TV series M*A*S*H reallycaptured the essence of those units, Ithink," Camp said. "l could relate tothat show-it showed a lot of whatreally happened, and many of theirstories were true stories, taken from

people who wrote in about their ownKorean War experiences. "

Camp thinks that other Korean Warveterans could also benefit from sharingtheir experiences through membershipin a group such as KWVA.

"I know there must be lots of lettercarriers who went through that war, "he said. "There are five or six carriersin my branch who were there-and thisis a town of only 26,000."

KWVA is open to anyone who was

in the armed forces from June 1950through 1955, he said. Annual dues are

$15. For more information, he sug-gested writing the membership chair-man, Harry Walface, atP.O. Box12205,Baltimore, MD 21281.

The Assoclation keeps enactlng JOE PEYT0Nts Ehesls, as falling apples vindicateNewton -- ttOne b1r one...t'

I{e are at, that, miserable polnt where we dread to answer the phone.

As good frlend ED HENRY has told us one hundred times or more3 rtYou are thellghtning rod..." And Invarlably the bolt sneaks in via Ehat phone.

Sneak in again lE dld one cold November Sunday morning. EDDIE ROBINSON was aE theother end of the wlre.

Johanna JOHNSON had jusE called hlm. She had gone home from a Saturday night party-- to find her beloved BOB on the floor. Bob had lefts the party earlier -- notfeellng well -- insistlng that Johanna stay to Ehe end.

And non this.We have lost a loyal member, a valuable conrorker, a dear friend. We have worked wlth every man who ever r^rore the label "Membership Chairman.r'

No one flll-ed the shoes wlth greaEer zest, with greater zeal.

The job exclted hlm, fasclnated him Like a spiderst rnating dance.

Irreverent as thls may sound -- lt is meanE with the highest degree of respect andnot a srnall share of sadness.

So long as he worked with us, hardly a day passed when we were not in receipt ofa rnaillng from hlm.

And consist, ent.ly -- Eucked somewhere wlthin every leEter, every reporE, there was abiE of fi:n, a seed for laught,er.

Bob enjoyed his work -- and he rnade worklng wlth hlm the fr:n that, lt was.

ArrqT was hls llfe. And ln hls retlremenE years, he was happlest when he was

refLecting upon the days thaE were. And durlng hls peregrlnaElons across the militaryspecErun, his bellefs never changed; ttlt was the good life and I was happy E,o havebeen a pa.rt of lt.'r

The end -- as pa.inless as it was swift. Now he challenges us one last uime -- Eo face his passing wiEh the same grace he

brought to lt.We shall feel hls absence enormousLy.

We are put ln mind of the staEement of Wl1llam Gerrand Hamilton on the death ofanoEher Johnson, Samuel: t'He has made a chasm which not, only nothing can fill up,but which nothlng has a tendency Eo fill up. Johnson is dead. Let us go on to Ehe

next best. There is nobody. No man can be said to put you in mind of Samuel Johnson."Or of RoberE t'Sarge" Johnson.
