Our Historic JLM Headquarters

Phase IV Renovations Underway By Vicky Hucks, JLM HQ Inc. President and Julia Bianchi, Renovation Chair

Phase IV renovation work on ourhistoric headquarters at 713Biltmore Way is beginning. This

work will include replacing all exist-ing windows in the building, with theexception of the glass windows at thefront of the building, with impact-resistant, glass aluminum-clad win-dows. Weight bearing issuespreclude the replacement of the win-dows in the front of the building, soin the event of a hurricane we willcontinue to place existing shutters inthese areas. The exterior of the build-ing will have all cracks, fissures andholes repaired, then the building willbe sealed and repainted.

About 713 Biltmore WayKnown in Coral Gables archives asthe “Bennett Building,” 713 BiltmoreWay is a two-story miniature“Venetian Palace” built for PatrickBennett in 1925 by George Merrick'sCoral Gables Construction andSupply Company. Designed byGeorge Fink and constructed at acost of $30,000, it was the first com-mercial building erected in CoralGables and is the only remainingexample of this type of commercialbuilding west of City Hall.

The Junior LeagueChampions HistoricPreservationThe Junior League of Miamipurchased 713 Biltmore Wayon December 28, 1995, toserve as its permanent head-quarters. Its purchase is a testa-ment to the vision of leaders inprevious generations who hadlong-ago established a fund forthe purpose of purchasing anhistoric building to use as ourHeadquarters.

In 1996 the Junior League embarkedupon an ambitious four-phase plan topurchase and renovate the building. We have successfully completed thefirst three phases and today, we areembarking upon Phase IV which willensure the building’s integrity formany years to come. Phases I, II andIII involved extensive renovationwhich was required to bring thebuilding in compliance with currentbuilding code and fire safety require-ments. During these phases, we werefortunate to locate and preserve somekey historic features of the building.

The front door is historic and wasfound on site during demolition. Inaddition, we discovered DadeCounty pine flooring which waspainstakingly restored and now cov-ers the entire reception area. On thesecond floor facing Biltmore Way, wereclaimed the original porch areawhich had been enclosed during oneof the building’s many “updates.” Thehistoric iron railing around the stair-way has been preserved and slightlymodified to comply with safety coderequirements.

The first and second floors of thebuilding were been completelyreconfigured to maximize space. Onthe first floor, we constructed twooffices, a fax/copy/mail room, akitchenette, a handicap-accessiblebathroom, a board room and an ele-vator. The rear glass “atrium” area hasbeen removed and reconfigured as agarden and handicap-accessibleentrance. Handicap parking is avail-able in the back of the building. Thesecond floor now has a full kitchenand lounge area, a large storage area,a handicap-accessible bathroom, anda community meeting room.

The League’s historic furniture hasbeen refinished and the upholsteredpieces have been recovered usingdonated fabrics. The end result is thatour Headquarters is both functionaland beautifully decorated.

As with any historic structure build-ing, time and weather take their toll. Our building is no different but ourplan is in motion!

This provisional class is amaz-ing!! In order to get a good ideaof how great they are, you

should know what they have beenworking on this year! In January, theladies attended their training onDomestic Violence where they weretreated to a discussion by MignaSanchez-Llorens, Assistant PublicDefender (and League member);Ernestine Davis, Director of ITS; andJudge Deborah White-Labora. Theseladies had the provisionals totally fas-cinated as they discussed the latest

information and details about domes-tic violence in our community. InFebruary, the provisionals attendedthe Community Project presentationswhere they heard about the amazingprojects that the league is consider-ing for next year. They asked manyquestions and left with a great idea ofthe variety of projects they could beworking on next year.

In February, a large group of provi-sionals volunteered at ITS to continuea mentor project that began in the

Fall. They distributed atremendous volume ofdonated business clothingto the women and helpedthe ITS Committee pre-pare for the ITS CareerFair held March 8th.

March arrived and theseladies were not done! They worked at the LotusHouse and helped ladiesmove out as they transi-tioned to new homes. They worked atHeadquarters where theycleaned up, organized, and did some landscap-ing. At Lighthouse for theBlind, they completed a

day’s worth of program-ming for the teens(including makinglunch!). Another mentor group alsoassisted at the ITS Career Fair March8th. On March 29th, a group of pro-visionals went to the Hurwitt CrisisCenter where they worked on artsand crafts with the residents, cookeda meal together and landscaped thegrounds. All in all, a very excitingmonth of volunteering!

In addition to all of these volunteeropportunities, these awesome provi-sionals also attended their last provi-sional training on the topic of ChildAbuse. They listened as Judge CindyLederman and Maria Clara Rodriguezfrom Kristi House talked about thestatus of child welfare in our commu-nity.

It has definitely been an amazingyear for these outstanding newLeague members! On April 16th,they will be celebrating theirCommencement and their manywonderful accomplishments thisyear. It has truly been a pleasure towork with each of them and theProvisional Committee has had arewarding experience as their men-tors. We look forward to welcomingthem as Active members for 2008-09!

As you probably know, “FORE!”in golf jargon means “watchout!” And it’s the perfect word

to use to get your attention about ourJLM Golf Committee and the 2007JLM Golf Tournament, because this issurely a committee to watch out for!

On October 12, JLM held its 4th annu-al golf tournament and not only didwe meet our goal, we exceededit! The JLM raised $40,000, surpassingour goal by $10,000. Golf co-chairsKim Sarkisian and Maria Maloof andtheir committee of 19 secured $31,000in underwriting which helped ensure afinancially lucrative event.

Thankfully, Mother Nature was onour side. The sunny clear skies madefor a perfect day to hit the links.Eighty-eight golfers turned out at

Crandon Golf Course in KeyBiscayne to play. The players (andcommittee members) enjoyed theBloody Mary Station and competitionkicked into gear once they heard ofthe first, second and third prizes thecommittee secured from Tiffany’s.

While golf may not be a pastime for alot of our Leaguers, the tournamentplays an important part of our Leaguepresence in the corporate communi-ty. Corporations and other companieshave money that they set aside for

non-profit and charitable use. Thegolf tournament allows us to let thebusiness community know what wedo and give them a chance to helpsupport the efforts of the JLM.

The 2007 tournament was certainly abig hit, but our 2008 committeeheaded up by Loretta Nido andLauren Hunt is already hard at workto reach new highs. They have raisedthe bar to a goal of $50,000. Thereare two simple ways you can help.Ask yourself: Who do I know thatmight want to play? Who do I knowthat might be interested in sponsoringa corporate event? Think friends... fam-ily...neighbors...church or synagogue.

Let’s all do our best to ensure the 5thAnnual Golf Tournament is the bestyet!
