J oin us on Saturday after-noon, April 4th, for some most ex-cellent driving range fun. There is an

awesome HEATED out-door driving range in Wood Dale called Top Golf. It's different than any other practice facil-ity you've ever been to. Instead of just hitting balls out into a field, this place has green-sized targets built into the ground. Each target is divided into segments, much like a dart board, with a different point

value for each segment. When you hit your ball into a certain spot, that point value is automatically recorded for you and your score is updated accordingly. How is this possible, you ask? It's quite simple - inside each ball lives a small mountain gnome (though some non-believers,

like Lou, claim it's a computer chip) that records that the ball belongs to you and then another gnome (okay, sensor) knows it location. Totally awesome gnome-based technology at work! We can even play different games just like in darts - well, sort of. What's the best part of Top Golf? TWO bars!! That's right -TWO bars!! So even if you don't want to hit golf ball you can join us for multiple cocktails and get sloshed in the comfort of the heated bar. My rec-ommendation, though, is to come on out, hit some gnome-infested balls in the comfort of one of the many heated bays, and then get totally sloshed! Come on, join us April 4th, price is $15 if your golf-ing, bar tab if you're not. Please call me with any questions. -Jeff Smith

Elections are April 1st. Nominations

for positions will be at the 3/4 & 3/18 meetings. Remember Ibex officers choose the ski and social destinations and ac-tivities. Make your voice be heard. Assistants are needed for all of these positions. This is a great way to contribute and share the load. Positions to be elected: Executive Board: President, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership, Trips, and Activities. All Executive Board positions are one-year positions, except Trips is a

2-year position. Pam Arnold will be fulfilling her second year of the posi-tion during the 2009-2010 year. Qualifications: Interested Member of Ibex. President needs to have been an active member for two years. Board of Directors: Two positions, each is a two-year term. Board of Directors candidates need to have been an active member for 24 months prior to the election. Returning BOD members for 2009-2010 will be Ed Bendickson, Joe Davis, and Lynne Moon. touch…”

W hile you are reading this I am going to be skiing in Jackson Hole, with fresh snow predicted every day …yeeeeeehaaaaaaaaw. Yep, Bill Haussmann is leading 32 Ibex for a fun packed visit to Jackson with Mother Nature contributing the plenty of the white fluffy stuff. Look-ing at the trip roster, I am willing to bet there will be a few notable sto-ries that will end up as Goaties at our annual banquet. After the Ibex trip season wraps up with a spring trip to Aspen (also cer-tain to be another Goatie festival, which I will also personally attend to document, (geeez this job is hard!), we have our annual banquet planned on April 18

th for our cele-

bration of another year of fun times, fun skiing and good friends in the Ibex Ski Club. March brings more than skiing and the annual Chili Cook-Off, it also brings nominations for the Ibex elec-tion coming up. This is when people in the club have the chance to step up and run for an office to help keep Ibex going strong. Along with my retirement from the board, there will be several other positions sure to be open as well. Why don’t you step up and take the chance to contribute your personal touch to the Ibex ex-perience? If you have decent computer skills,

and know your way around a spreadsheet, and maybe even Quick Books, then the treasury po-sition will be a piece of cake for you. Are you outgoing and enjoy organiz-ing fun activities? We have a posi-tion for you too. How about a little creativity and moderate computer skills..then maybe the newsletter position is for you. If you been in the club a while and feel you can organize and lead people then maybe you want my current job as president? It is good to be the king….well sometimes anyway ;-). No matter the position, it is very rewarding to know you con-tributed to keeping our club going strong, and providing your inputs directly to the day to day operations of the club. We all hope you will seriously con-sider doing your part to keeping Ibex strong, please feel free to ask any questions you have, all of us on the board will be happy to address your concerns. Finally, I want to thank all of you who turned out to our first meetings in Gatsby’s held in February, I think the new location is a real success, hopefully this will turn out to be a long term meeting spot. Hope to see you all soon on the slopes, at an Ibex activity, or at a meeting in our fabulous new loca-tion. -Lou

WWINEINE TTASTINGASTING --RRECAPECAP T he IBEX Wine Tasting Event was held on Fri., Feb. 20

th at Wine

Styles in Palatine and was enjoyed by over 20 IBEX and friends. The tasting featured a nice selection of wines including 4 different wines from Laurent Miquel Vineyard in Languedoc region in France. The winemaker was there to pour wine

and talk to the group about his wines and his vineyard. Joan Heater purchased a tee-shirt that I’m sure she will wear to future wine tasting events! Everyone seemed to leave with a least 1 bottle, including Mike Warta who typically drinks beer and Janine Westlund who managed to find a wine that was the main ingredient in a Martini recipe! -Pam

Excellent Trip Summary

Whitefish

W ow – hard to believe it’s March already ! Our Ski Season is well underway with fun-filled trips to Whitefish, Bad Hofgastein and Granite Peak mere memories and pictures (probably still needed to be downloaded from the camera if you are like me). I was fortunate enough to be the Bad Hofgastein trip, lead by Sarah Schmeichel, and can vouch for good times had by all, whether skiing where the phase « Do the Dorf » was coined, deli-cious meals at our hotel (ask Cliff how many breakfasts he ate !) or enjoying a spa day like Karen G. Jackson Hole is in full-swing as I write this and a quick e-mail from Lou stated « it’s snowing ! » ; hope-fully the folks on Jackson enjoyed the Elk Dinner that was included for Ibex as returning guests of the 49er Hotel. The last trip of our season will be Spring Break in Aspen with 38 folks signed up. While sign ups are offi-cially closed, contact John Brandt and Debbie Dukes to put your name on the waiting list in case of a last minute cancellation.

Soon it will be time to end the ski year by attending the Ibex Banquest Bash on Sat., April 18th. I hope to see all of you there ! As we close this year, it’s time to start planning for next year’s ski season. As part of the trip planning process, I will be attending the Mountain Travel Symposium held at Keystone resort starting March 30th. This is an opportunity to meet with various providers and resorts and begin the trip selection process. Each provider will have their spe-cials to different locations and we will gain an understanding of choices and pricing. In this econ-omy, more than ever, we will need to remain flexible to offer great trips to the best possible destinations. With this in mind, we will not launch a Trip Survey this year ; we will util-ize the results obtained from last year’s survey along with provider specials and your feedback. I value your input, so please contact me to share your thoughts regarding pos-sible destinations for next year. -Pam Arnold Chiechi

GGRANITERANITE PPEAKEAK——RECAPRECAP

T wenty Ibex skiers took to the land of cheese over Valentines Day weekend at Granite Peak. Some people went up early and enjoyed an extra day of non crowded skiing and a nice swim in the big hotel pool at the Best Western Midway. The Smith, Jeff and Kris, were the only no shows at the hotel. Jeff had an infected finger from Thursday and it was not getting better on Friday. Ironically, Kris was taking Jeff's pulse on Friday and noticed the in-fection had spread up to Jeff's el-bow, so she took Jeff to the hospital. Jeff was admitted to the hospital on Friday, and surgery followed on Sat-urday to get rid ot the infections. Fortunately Jeff is okay, and all at IBEX are happy, but we missed Jeff and Kris on the trip. Saturday was a first day of skiing and we were greeted with upper 20's and sunny skies. This day would see a record crowd for Gran-ite Peak for attendance, not a good thing you want to hear. We found out if we stayed away from the mid-dle and kept to the sides that the lines were much shorter, and the terrain was pretty good. The snow held up through the warm days and was not as icy as expected, unless you ventured into the shoots. The trip leader, Mike Lepsi, as well as Carolyn Lepsi, and Laura Mc- Groarty, were not brave enough to ATTEMPT to do the shoots. The runs to the right were nice and long with advance runs leading to inter-mediate. The glade runs were open so we were able to try it out. Lunch was in the historic chalet, where some sat inside and others ate on the deck outside by the fire pits. It was actually warm and sunny enough were it was nice to sit out-side. It was crowded so it proved a

challenge to sit together. The skii apres was in the bar which some IBEX people joined in a few drinks before retreating to the hotel for the wine and cheese party. Thanks to Ed Bendenickson, Bob Kimicata and Paul Nearing for se-curing the two tables for the wine and cheese party. The wine and cheese party turned into a pool party that lasted four hours, and even turned into dinner pizza party. Thanks to Paula Hiller and Mike Nelson for bringing the extra Wis-consin cheese and wine, both good, and helped keep the party going. Jean Bagel and her friends tried local restaurant 1325, which they said was good. Sunday was a more challenging day, but after we escaped the billing fiasco at the hotel, it was back to Granite Peak. It was not as sunny as the day before and it was colder. Seemed to be a little bit more ice that day. Some of us fond our self on the left side which featured steeper black runs which were shorter. There was also some mogul runs on that side. Ibex met for lunch at the new cafete-ria for lunch and than some more skiing. Then it was back to Chicago for most, but some stayed one more day. It was a fun trip in all, and that a wrap of the 2009 Midwest trip. -Mike & Carolyn

A ustria, Naked People, and a Scary Baby Doll Austria Our trip began at the Chili’s in

O’Hare airport. We boarded the Lufthansa flight to Munich. We arrived about 45 min-utes early and gath-ered our luggage. We found Cliff and Loretta right away. A few min-utes later, Paula Hiller joined us after taking the train from Zurich. The bus company called and said that they would be late due to bad traffic and an accident. They ended up being about 2 hours late. Luckily there were some restaurants and stores in the terminal

where we were waiting. Once we all boarded the bus and got on the road, we saw what the bad traffic looked like. Nasty. We reached our destination and

checked in. We were on time for dinner but we had our welcome wine & cheese party after dinner as we arrived too late for the original time. Christopher, the hotel manager, told us about the skiing, the ski bus, other things to do in the area, etc. The first day of skiing, we went to Schlossalm Ban. It was a beautiful, sunny day. We got a glimpse of some of the other ski

areas that we couldn’t wait to try out the next day. Naked People After skiing, many people headed to the pool, hot tub (aka the ―tepid‖ tub), and sauna. Keep in mind, this

is Europe. The people in the sauna were naked – and co-ed. Of course, the naked people weren’t the type that anyone would like to actually see naked. They were very nice people, just scary naked. Several Ibex encountered various naked people throughout the re-mainder of the week. We started our tradition of meeting in the lobby bar and heading to din-ner. A major bonus on this trip was that beer and wine was included with the meal. Needless to say, we made dinner drag out as long as humanly possible. We became buds with our wait staff Peter, Florian, Peter, and Sandra. Peter #1 and Florian also doubled as bartenders. Some people went out to check out the nightlife in the area. Di and Ellen found a couple of good bars – one which involved the German D.J. showing his butt to the crowd. Paula headed out with the group of Bel-gians who were also staying at our hotel. They checked out the aptly-named Ice Cube nightclub. It looks like an ice cube, really it does. Day two had some folks heading to Bad Gastein to ski. Another group was keen on getting the first sledg-ing run in for the trip. Much to their dismay, the sledging group did not get to sledge that day and became

fresh powder. Once you got to the top of Dorfgastein you could ski to the bottom and back to the (teeny) town of Dorfgastein or ski down the other side to Grossarl. On Thursday, the group skied Dorfgastein once more as it was a large area. Others shopped around the town and Karen G. checked out the Alpentherme – a large health spa near the hotel. Yes, she encountered many more naked people. Thursday evening, the group planned to go sledging. We had to get to dinner at 6:30 so that we could make the sledging time. Well, dinner took longer than we thought and, even though I

the hanging-out-in-Bad Gastein-group. It was another great, sunny day of skiing. Gerhard took Pam and Glen to the village of Kaprun nearby. This is where Gerhard was born and spent most of his childhood. It was nice to have a native son on the trip. A Scary Baby Doll On day three, about 13 of the group headed to Salzburg for a day trip. Salzburg is the birthplace of Mozart, and we found that he is much like Elvis is to Memphis. He and his balls (the Mozart Kugeln chocolate candy balls – akin to Schwetty Balls) were everywhere. The group hiked up to the castle on the hill and toured the museum. The group split into a couple of factions. Both groups, we found out later, went to Mozart’s birthplace and mu-seum. Now, I like Mozart’s music and all, but that museum was just weird. One room had this scary baby doll in a crib. Apparently, it is supposed to be Mozart. I think someone got a hold of an extra Baby Jesus doll from a Nativity scene. Bizarre.

Back to Skiing The next had most of the group heading to Dorfgastein. It snowed a lot the night before so we had some

confirmed with the hotel staff that it would be OK to be late, we found out it wasn’t. After we walked over to the funicular, it was closed. On Friday, a large contingent skied in Sportsgastein. Sportsgastein had been closed the previous two days due to an ava-lanche covering the one and only road to get there. Cliff, Loretta, and I finally got to go sledging. It was quite fun. I’m sur-prised Loretta and I didn’t cause an avalanche with all our screaming as we flew down the mountain. Saturday morning came and we were to meet the bus in the lobby at 10:00

am. We all thought that we could have a leisurely breakfast and get our luggage ready, but no. The bus driver showed up at the hotel at 8:00 am. The bus company called the travel agent to let them know they needed to pick us up earlier, but no one called the hotel. Go

figure. Everyone was pretty much packed and ready. It just took a few extra minutes to round everyone up. We

(Continued from page 7) hit the road about 9:15. That was a good thing as the traffic was pretty hideous. A nice feature was that the bus driver took us on back roads to save time as there was no traffic. We got to see some nice little towns and beautiful countryside. The group of 10 heading back to the states had to catch a 3:30 plane. We didn’t get to the airport in Mu-nich until about 2 p.m. Luckily, the airport was pretty deserted and they made the flight. Munich Our first night in Munich, we all fol-lowed Herr Glen Gastein to the Marienplatz near the hotel. We thought the glockenspiel would go off at 5 p.m. It didn’t and we found out that it only plays at noon, so we put that off until day two. Glen led us to the famous Hofbrau Haus. We had several beers and German fare, including really large pretzels. Cliff and Loretta headed back to their hotel near the airport for their flight the next day. On Sunday, many shops were closed but restaurants and muse-ums were open. Some of headed to the Frauenkirchen, which Pam acci-dently called Franken-kirchen (Frankestein’s church). We then met up at noon to hear the glocken-spiel. Then the group met up to tour the Residenze museum. It was quite elaborate. We then headed to another brau haus for a late lunch. That evening our resident Munich tour guide, Glen led us to the Au-gustiner brau haus for more big pretzels, sausage, and kraut. The bus on Monday wasn’t sched-ule to leave until 11, so we went back over to the Marienplatz to pur-chase various German trinkets. The bus showed up to take seven Ibex to the airport. The bus was enor-mous and could have held about 40

IIBEXBEX EELECTIONSLECTIONS!!

STEP UP and

MAKE A

DIFFERENCE!

T he victim’s perspective: Have you ever been talked into go-ing on a ski weekend with your friends only to find out they ski much better than you and took you on runs you had no business being on? When you can’t keep up with the better skiers, they tend to ski off and leave you to fend for yourself. Your perspective: You get bored skiing easier terrain that is not challenging. Have you ever taken a trip with your family? Your kids start crying or wining 30 minutes after you put on their skis and they want to go home. You have a bad habit of putting your friends in bad situations, because you lead them into terrain that is too difficult. Do any of these situations sound familiar? Fear not, here are several solutions for you to pick from. Tell your friends about taking les-sons if they want to improve. Chances are they can pick up a few pointers and be skiing the same ter-rain as you in no time. Put your kids in a lesson. This will enabled you to walk away for a few

hours. The instructor will be im-mune to your kids’ antics so he can’t be distracted. Plan to meet everyone at lunch after the lesson. This will give you time to wear yourself out in the morning and welcome skiing easier terrain in the afternoon. This will help you conserve energy for the evening escapades. Make arrangements for your family or friends who took a lesson, to show you what they learned. You may pick up a pointer or two that you had stored away in the locked vaults of your memory. Never ski alone – look what hap-pened to Sony Bono – he skied into a tree and died because no one was around to call for help. Never ski off and leave your family and friends to fend for themselves. Reinforce good habits, take a les-son yourself and encourage your family and friends to take a lesson. Skiing should be fun and not some-thing to suffer through. Encourage your family and friends to take a lesson so you both can enjoy the time away from the daily duties of work or home. -Debbie

PPARTINGARTING SSHOTSHOTS

These are from a book called Disorder in the American Courts, and are things people actually said in court, word for word, taken down and now published by court reporters that had the torment of staying calm while these exchanges were actually taking place. ATTORNEY: What was the first thing your husband said to you that morn-ing? WITNESS: He said, "Where am I, Cathy?" ATTORNEY: And why did that upset you? WITNESS: My name is Susan! ATTORNEY: What gear were you in at the moment of the impact? WITNESS: Gucci sweats and Reeboks.

ATTORNEY: Are you sexually active? WITNESS: No, I just lie there. ATTORNEY: This myasthenia gravis, does it affect your memory at all? WITNESS: Yes. ATTORNEY: And in what ways does it affect your memory? WITNESS: I forget. ATTORNEY: You forget? Can you give us an example of something you forgot? ATTORNEY: Now doctor, isn't it true that when a person dies in his sleep, he doesn't know about it until the next morning? WITNESS: Did you actually pass the bar exam?
