Aquote that sums up my Leagueexperience this year is: “And it’sstill true, no matter how old you

are, when you go out into the world, it’salways better to hold hands and sticktogether.”

What we accomplished by stickingtogether this year is nothing short ofamazing. Nordstrom, completelyunderwritten and then some. WomenWho Make a Difference Luncheon, completely underwritten by RoyalCaribbean International. Race For TheCure, thanks to our involvement againthis year in tandem with Junior Leagues

throughout the country, we pushed ourattendees to 10,000 for the first time.InStyle Magazine called us to partnerwith them to the tune of $20,000 in rev-enues we weren’t counting on in ourbudget with national advertising for ourJunior League for the first time ever.

And at the Annual Conference, theAssociation of Junior LeaguesInternational awarded us $10,000 forour GAP project…the first-ever grantfor JLM from our parent organiza-tion…and certainly not the last.

I wouldn’t be telling you how much Ihave loved being your President if it

wasn’t for every one of you…Actives,Sustainers and Provisionals….I am soglad we held hands and stuck togetherthis year….I am so proud of all of us! •

8 Junior League of Miami

Closing the GAPHelping to make a difference in other communities By Vicki Lopez Lukis

community connections

Junior League of Miami is once againbringing its expertise to otherLeagues with the sole objective of

expanding our collective volunteer serv-ices to other communities. It is no secretto our membership that we have taken aleadership role with regards to girls indetention through our long-standingcommunity partnership with the GirlsAdvocacy Project (GAP).

At the beginning of this League year, Imet with Amy Sussman, our “fierceless”leader, to determine a plan of actionthat would strengthen our position asemerging “experts” on girls in the juve-nile justice system. She challenged meto “roll out” our GAP project through-out the state to our sister Leagues utiliz-ing my SPAC delegate position. Ithought her vision was ambitious, atbest, and wondered if I would be able tocomplete the plan in one short year.Who could have imagined that shewould be on to something so realistic?

Shortly thereafter, I introduced thisconcept to the Leagues statewide whenJLM hosted the SPAC Fall Conference. The visit to the Miami-Dade RegionalJuvenile Detention Center and thefocus group I facilitated with the GAPgirls left each SPAC delegate in awe. They unanimously voted to take thisproject back to their Leagues in hopesof encouraging their members to devel-op a Junior League GAP-like projectmuch like the one they had witnessedfirsthand here in Miami. I have sincebeen traveling around the state address-ing memberships who have expressed adesire to learn more about our workwith these extraordinary girls.

On April 19, I traveled to Lee County atthe invitation of the Junior League ofFort Myers. They had invited me tospeak on our GAP program and themany successes that we had experi-enced in the four years in which wehave partnered with GAP. I knew it wasa huge opportunity to humanize the

plight of these young girls whose at-riskfactors have contributed to their path todelinquency.

I spoke to their President, MelanieSaxon, prior to the meeting and shegave me some background about theissue and their League’s consideration. Igave my presentation and, as you mightsuspect, there were many tears as I readthe reflections from our GAP girls aboutthe impact we have had on their lives. The Superintendent of the SWRegional Juvenile Detention Center,Vincent Vurro, was informative as heshared his expertise of working withgirls in his center and articulated themany unmet needs that could be met byJunior League volunteers. He welcomedthem with open arms and answeredquestions about logistics that lent cred-ibility to the overall presentation.

At the end of my presentation and justas they were about to vote on whetherto accept this as a community project, akey member of their leadership wasthen moved to give her own personaltestimony. She said that something Ihad said had hit home with her. [Ialways like to remind my audience thatbut for the grace of God go any of us orour children.] It seems that she and her4 siblings were illegitimate as her moth-er never married her father. He was analcoholic and she observed him beatingher mother on nearly a daily basis. Shemoved into drugs but miraculouslynever got into trouble. She was sure thatshe was one of thosethat but for the graceof God escaped whatsurely would havebeen a life in and outof the juvenile justicesystem. Today, she isa successful and pro-ductive member ofher community. Sheis a tribute to surviv-ing much adversityand her courage to

share that with her mem-bership moved me totears.

It was truly miraculous toshare our GAP work withthe nearly 70 womenpresent who were contemplatingwhether to adopt a similar communityproject for their League. A vote wastaken and only 4 of the members votedagainst it. So we now have the firstLeague to expand volunteer services toyoung girls in detention outside of theMiami-Dade community and I am over-whelmed with pride for the JuniorLeague of Miami and its leadership rolein making this a reality!

All in all, it was a marvelous experiencefor me and for them. I am thrilled thatthe first League to take me up on myoffer to help them begin this project isin my hometown. My younger sister, who lives in Naples and accompaniedme to the meeting, said she was sohappy to have witnessed what sheknows will be the beginning of some-thing big for their community and fortheir organization. She could feel thesea change on the horizon and it wasobvious from the response I got afterthe vote was taken that their member-ship is ready to go on the “inside” andstep up to the challenge. I am proud tocount them in our circle and look for-ward to seeing other Leagues join us inour powerful work. •

What Makes You Angry?By Andria Hanley

At a recent Foundation event I enjoyed a conversation andwant to share it with you. A very wise sustainer (KarenThrockmorton) was talking with a group of actives about

volunteer commitments and posed an interesting question. Sheasked us to think about what makes us most angry. Then she said,“Whatever comes to mind is where you should focus your volunteertime.” For some, it was animal rights, others children’s issues.

For me it was cancer, naturally, but something else too. I thoughtabout Jessica Lunsford. Now THAT is something that makes meangry. And I thought about us, as an organization and what we do.I realized two things. One, that thanks to sustainers who havedone it before us, we have become very good, in fact excellent, athelping women and children who have been abused. We should, and do, care very much about them. But the second thing I real-ized is what made me angry. We need to do something to elimi-nate the problem. We must be proactive AND reactive. Just likeMADD women, we need to let our voices be heard. We have tolet our legislators know that we want a national registry of sexoffenders as well as tracking devices for life. From what I knowabout the issue, the behavior does not go away or correct itself. That being said, we need to know if they are in our neighbor-hoods or near our children’s schools. PAC Chair Carol Bryanttalked about this at our April General Membership Meeting. Sheencouraged us to go to www.miamidade.gov to see if there areoffenders near your home.

The good news is our statewide SPAChas already done something about it.They have released a statement tellinglegislators how the majority of our24,000 members feel about this issue.

I wonder what comes to mind whenyou ask yourself what makes youangry. I hope it is something theLeague is doing something about. Ifnot, and if it fits into our mission, pro-pose that we take it on as a projectnext year, through our program devel-opment process.

I left the lunchthinking aboutanger. Anger, Irealized over arelaxing cup ofcoffee, is a goodthing. Thank youKaren, and all thesustainers whomake us think anddrive us to dowhat is right! •

“The work of the JUNIOR LEAGUEhas changed the lives of thousandsof women and children over theyears. I have seen it and watchedit…I was so honored to be recog-nized by such a group. Thank youfor your kind words.”

–Sharon Langer, Legal Aid

Tillie Fowler, one of the JuniorLeague of Jacksonville’s mostrecognizable members, passed

away March 2, 2005. An avid supporterof the community, former Congress-woman Fowler joined the Junior Leaguein 1975.

A natural leader, Tillie served on thePublic Affairs Committee in 1980which worked on the Child WelfareTask Force and Public Education.Advocating for teacher salaries andstandards, a lifetime commitment toeducation and advocacy began. Otherleadership positions included chairingthe Education Committee and theCommunity Research Committee.

As President of the Junior League in1982-83, Tillie exemplified integrity, openness and a clear vision. Her gift for

organizational development and inno-vative planning was evident.

Mrs. Fowler often credited the JuniorLeague for fueling her passion for com-munity involvement and getting herinterested in politics. Even after becom-ing a Sustainer (alumnus), Tillie contin-ued to support the Junior League as amentor, advisor and friend.

Each year, the Junior League honors theachievements of Mrs. Fowler throughthe awarding of the Tillie K. FowlerCommunity Service Award. The awardrecognizes a commitment to outstand-ing volunteer leadership.

Mrs. Fowler was elected to theJacksonville City Council in 1985 andbecame the body’s first female presi-dent. A Republican, Tillie was elected toCongress in 1992, winning a seat that

had been held by aDemocrat for 42years. During hereight-year tenurein the House ofRepresentatives, she served on theHouse ArmedServices committee, the Transportation

and Infrastructure Committee andchaired the subcommittee on OversightInvestigations and EmergencyManagement. She was the DeputyMajority Whip for six years.

She received the U.S. Navy’sDistinguished Public Service Award andthe Department of Defense Medal forDistinguished Public Service – thehighest civilian awards given by both –for her efforts to ensure a strong mili-tary.

After leaving Congress, Mrs. Fowlerwas appointed to the Commission onthe Future of the Aerospace Industry bythe Speaker of the House and theCenter for Strategic & InternationalStudies named her to its DistinguishedCongressional Fellows panel. DefenseSecretary Donald Rumsfeld appointedher to the Defense Policy BoardAdvisory Committee in 2001. In May2003, she was named the first womenchair of the Defense Policy Board.

Tillie quietly changed the worldthrough an unwavering commitment topublic service. Her grace, strength andvision will be greatly missed. Ourthoughts and prayers are with theFowler family. •

Congratulations!

On Thursday May 5th anotherrite of passage occurred forleaders in the Junior League of

Miami, the Incoming-Outgoing BoardReception. As our volunteer year drewto a close, the existing Board ofDirectors, 17 strong, invited AndriaHanley and her new Board to a cham-pagne reception at the home of AmySussman. The purpose of the receptionis to welcome new Leadership into ouresteemed organization and is alwayshosted by the existing Board.

Board Members feasted on caviar pie, crab dip and sushi as they indulged withindividual champagnes….completewith a straw. The new hot-pink themefor JLM once again turned up on the

buffet. Bright pink flowers, starfish, rib-bon and accessories adorned the table. The spirited pink color first turned up atour much heralded outreach booth atthe InStyle event on South Beach.

The color was approved of by so manymembers and non-members alike, that itwas adopted as JLM’s unofficial newlook. InStyle Magazine dubbed us asthe best looking booth on the beach.Andria Hanley, incoming President, haseven used bright pink on the cover ofthe usually bland Placement Bulletin. “Ithink we are an upbeat, fun-lovinggroup of women that is consistentlycoming together to change our commu-nity for the better…pink really reflectsthat sentiment,” she said.

The event was held in Amy’s home theprior year as well and many Board mem-bers remarked how quickly the year hadpassed. Four of the existing Board mem-bers have had babies in this term includ-ing; Lauren Harrison (twins), JenGreen, Stephanie Demos and LeanneTellam. Those happy moments seemedto put the year into a balanced perspec-tive for the Board.

The evening marked one of quietrepose for the old Board and an excitedkick-off for the new group. They reallyappreciated the lovely reception in theirhonor and will be doing the same forSusan Lerners’ Board in a few shortmonths. A great evening was had by allin attendance. •

The final Board of Directors meet-ing of the Junior League ofMiami was held on Tuesday May

3rd in a private room at “Carmen TheRestaurant” across the street from ourhistoric headquarters.

Hosted by Amy Sussman, the event wasa hearty thank you to the Board fortheir year-long unwavering dedicationto JLM. The menu was a delicious pair-ing of wines with some of ChefCarmen’s specialties including; FloridaLobster and Avocado Terrine with KeyLime Mayonnaise and Crispy Plantain

Fritters, Grilled Churrasco Steak withYuca and Roasted Garlic MofongoVidalia Onion Escabeche, among oth-ers. The dinner ended on a bittersweetnote with the arrival of Upside downPineapple Cake with RoastedMacadamia Nut and Captain MorganSpiced Rum Sauce, Yum!

Among the usual year-end business ofapproving the budget for next year andmaking all of the necessary membershipstatus changes, the Board had a chanceto preview the year-end video for theAnnual Meeting.

And what a video presentation indeed.Created by Vice President ofCommunications Cybelle SantoDomingo, the video was both a funnyand poignant reflection of the year.President Amy Sussman had tears in hereyes and a quiver in her voice for herfinal thank you and farewell speech toher Board. She was especially grateful toAndria Hanley for her support as well.

The meeting was adjourned to laughterand applause for so many jobs that werewell done. •
