Pastor’s Corner

Must each twin have their own set of godparents,

or must both twins have only one set of Godpar-ents?

Since each of them is an individual soul, it seems only appro-priate that they should each have a set or at least one of their own Godparents.

Who are the Sadducees?

The Sadducees were an ultra-liberal, neo-political religious group of Jews who, like many Christians of today, would de-cidedly pick and choose what they did and didn’t want to be-lieve with regards to their own religion. They stood in direct contrast to the elite, ultra-conservative Pharisees who read, interpreted, and applied the Scriptures quite literally; practic-ing their faith upon an extreme “letter of the law” basis. The Sadducees did not believe in angels, the existence of Hell, and denied the Resurrection – all three of which are firmly rooted in Holy Bible.

My mother recently passed away. I’ve been going

through her things, and I found a sort of necklace she won in grade school for getting the best score on a Catechism quiz. My aunt tells me it’s called a scapular. What is that exactly?

There are two types of scapulars. The first type is a rectangle of cloth, maybe eighteen inches wide. It has an opening for the head, lays over the shoulders, and extends over the wear-er’s back and front almost to the floor. The word scapular comes from the Latin scapula, “shoulder.” It’s part of the reli-gious habit of the Franciscans, Carmelites, Dominicans, and others. The second type of scapular consists of one or two small (about 1/2-inch by 3/4-inch) pieces of cloth or wood that hang from the neck on two pieces of string or cord. Each side has a picture or prayer. Of the many types of sacramental scapulars, the most common, and the one your mother proba-bly won, is the brown scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It’s worn around the neck as an expression of commitment to the Mother of God and to living a holy life with her help.

I know that the clergy must consume everything

that is left in the chalice after the distribution of Holy Communion, but how exactly do you go about this?

At the conclusion of the liturgy, the priest goes over to the Table of Oblation where the chalice now resides and, using the spoon, consumes all of the particles that are left inside the cup. He then takes up the chalice and drinks the re-maining Blood. Following this, it is customary to pour very hot water into the cup (and also over the communion spoon) while "tilting and turning" the chalice so that the hot water both, washes and sterilizes the entire inside of the chalice. The priest then drinks this water and dries the cup using a communion cloth and/or a sea sponge blessed for this pur-pose, which then remains inside the cup.Interestingly, consuming the Chalice is one of the specified duties of a deacon. However, if there is no deacon available, this respon-sibility rests upon the priest.

DON’T FORGET – TOO MANY HAVE FORGOTTEN -- 9/11

Brothers and Sisters, can you remember where you were on the morning of September 11, 2001? Like most of you the memories of that day are vividly etched into my mind. I was at the seminary in Washington, DC getting ready to go school. After the attack on NYC, we seminarians debated whether or not to go to our classes at the building on the campus of the Catholic University of America. Our rector, called the school and asked their advice. They instructed us to 'come on so that the day will be as nor-mal for the students as any other day.' We did so, but that day was anything but normal. We, as a nation were hurt, confused and outraged. We were attacked, and yet we survived. We saw the evil of man and the grace of God, played out before our eyes and hearts. On Thursday, September 11th at 7:00 p.m. we will gather as a congregation to remember and pray for almost 3,000 innocent victims who perished in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. Our nation’s heroes, our fire fighters, po-lice and military personnel-and all those who died on 9/11 or in its aftermath will be remembered and honored in a prayer service at our parish. The memorial service will begin on Thursday, Sept. 11 at 7:00 PM and Fr. Ivan Turyk will preach on Where was God on September 11? All are strongly encouraged to participate, lest we forget our loved ones and friends. Come! Say A Prayer! Light a Candle!

Many people have run into this situation at one time or another in their lifetime. They park in a crowded parking lot, take notice of where the car is so they won’t have to spend time looking for it when they get through shopping. When they exit

the store they head straight to the car, put the key in the door and it doesn’t work. Puzzled, they try again and it still doesn’t work. They look around and eventually someone comes up and says that it’s their car that you’ve mistaken for your own. Total-ly embarrassed, you apologize and start looking around the lot trying to find where you parked.

It’s confusing and it’s happened to all of us. Which

leads me to the following story sent to me by email some time ago. I hooted when I read it because it carried the problem to the extreme and made the day for police officers in Sarasota, Florida. Read and enjoy:

Get Out Of The Car! (This is supposedly a true account record-

ed in the Police Log of Sarasota, Fla.)

An elderly Florida lady did her shopping and upon re-turning to her car, found four males in the act of leaving with her vehicle. She dropped her shopping bags and drew her hand-

gun, proceeding to scream at the top of her lungs, “I have a gun and I know how to use it! Get out of the car!” The four men didn’t wait for a second threat. They got out and ran like mad.

The lady, somewhat shaken, then proceeded to load her shopping bags into the back of the car and got into the driver’s seat. She was so shaken that she could not get her key into the ignition. She tried and tried, and then she realized why. It was

for the same reason she had wondered why there was a foot-ball, a frisbee, and two 12-packs of beer in the front seat.

A few minutes later, she found her own car parked four or five spaces farther down. She loaded her bags into the car and drove to the police station to report her mistake.

The sergeant to whom she told the story couldn’t stop

laughing. He pointed to the other end of the counter, where four

pale men were reporting a car jacking by a mad, elderly woman described as white, less than five feet tall, glasses, curly white hair, and carrying a large handgun.

No charges were filed. Moral of the story? If you’re going to have a senior

moment… make it memorable.

Brain Teasers.

1. What is the difference between a dol-lar and a half and thirty five-cents?

2. What jumps higher than a building? 3. Imagine you are swimming in the ocean

and a bunch of hungry sharks surround you. How do you get out alive?

4. Wednesday, Tom and Joe had dinner at a restaurant, then paid and left. But Tom and Joe didn't pay for the food. Who did?

5. What is it that no man wants to get, but no man wants to lose?

6. When do you start at red and stop at green

Answers.

1) Nothing: A dollar and a half is the same as thirty five-cents (nickels). 2) Everything: buildings don't jump. 3) Stop imagining. 4) Their friend Wednesday paid. 5) A lawsuit.

6) When you’re eating watermelon.
