Due to g rea te r coaching demands, Coach Daland, n o w swim coach of the Univers i ty of Sou the rn Cali- fornia and the Los Angeles Athlet ic Club, passed J U N I O R S W I M M E R to me and said, "Age Group Swimming is now a ma jo r sport in the Uni ted States. Give us a magazine that will excite the r e a d e r s . . . tha t will assist coaches wi th publ ished repor ts of meets , new ideas and t ra ining t echn iques . . , that will a w a k e n the press and public to the great accomplish- ments being pe r fo rmed by our youthfu l par t ic ipants ."

MRS. BETH KAUFMAN TO SERVE ON ADVISORY BOARD

J U N I O R S W I M M E R is p roud to announce tha t Mrs. Be th K a u f m a n , Nat ional Age G r o u p Swimming Commi t t ee Cha i rman will serve on J U N I O R SWIM- MER's Advisory Board. Mrs. K a u f m a n is known the wor ld over for her outs tanding contr ibut ion to the sport of swimming. In 1956 she was fittingly ack- nowledged with the A m a t e u r Athlet ic Union Swim- ming Award . H e r devot ion to Age Group Swimming is surpassed only by her t ireless endeavors to inspire g rea te r par t ic ipat ion and p r o g r a m s for swimming. H e r kindness and counsel are s incerely appreciated.

R e p r i n t e d b e l o w is a l e t t e r to the Ed i tor # o m Mrs . Kau~man .

"I am ve ry happy tha t J U N I O R S W I M M E R is again being published. I t is of g rea t interest to all the swimming enthusias ts of the Uni ted States. To under s t and the scope that is reached by the Age Group P rogram, one has bu t to look at the winners of the first places in the Nat ional Tabulat ion. In com- par ing these to the records of by-gone Champions, the swimmers of the Uni ted States have shown a t r e m e n d o u s i m p r o v e m e n t . T h e B r e a s t s t r o k e has shown the greates t improvement . I feel tha t these grea t str ides are largely due to the Age Group Program.

In the ear ly '50's, the Amateu r Athletic Union of the United States set up a you th development program in t rack and field and in swimming. Designed for mass participation and sponsored by communities, public recreat ion depts., newspapers, schools and other or- ganizations, this program was called the AAU Jun ior Olympics. Swimming and diving was separated f rom the AAU Commit tee on Age Group Swimming and was administered by a governing National AAU JR. OLYMPIC Committee. The committee set up special rules for competi t ion and all records were compiled and recorded separately.

Sparked by the National Committee, the Junior Olympic swimming meets soon became the highlight of the age group summer season. In 1957 th i r ty- four districts participated; in '58 thir ty-eight of the 48 dis- trict associations conducted meets and this past year the total was even greater.

NUMBER OF SWIMMERS The number of swimmers enter ing age group com-

petit ion has grown by leaps and bounds. Distr icts with fewer age group swimmers may feel that they are no problems, those with Jr . Olympic meet swim- mers totaling over 650 with close to 1700 entries claim to have one. But regardless of the number of district competitors, there seems no unanimi ty of opinion. Sooner or later all districts, no mat te r how large or small, will r ecogn ize tha t fac t ions wi th in des i re changes . ; , and these dissident voices hur t the ve ry purpose of the Jun ior Olympic program.

"It 's a cheap mee t " . . . I 've heard that r emark over • and over again by both coaches, officials and yes, even the contestants. And they are not refer r ing to mone- ta ry value. It is the only program that confines its meets to s t ra ightway 25 yard and 50 meter pools. It

has thousands of swimmers competing within the confines of a uni form course. A district first means something and a national placing should car ry the same relat ive honor to the junior swimmer as that afforded the athlete who participates in an In terna- tional Olympiad.

RULE CHANGES Attempts to change this rule have been unsuccess- fully t r ied at A A U National Conventions for many years. To affect a change, the new rule or amend- ment must be submit ted to A A U Commit tee 60 days in advance of convention for p lacement on the agenda for discussion and vote. And you can bet this year will be no exception.

Proponents of the present rule feel that re laxat ion of the rules defeats the goal of the Jr . Olympic pro- gram. That it is needed to give a lift to those swim- mers who are always under the thumb of the top performers. That it is needed to nu r tu re the slower developer, f rom a morale standpoint, par t icular ly in the lower age brackets, to keep them from dropping out of swimming. And, they claim, no other p rogram achieves this as well as the A A U Jr. Olympics.

Opponents ca l l it a "give-away meet ." Now here is where the beefs start. NO C O N T E S T A N T MAY ENTER OR P A R T I C I P A T E IN MORE T H A N TH REE (3) SHORT COURSE EVENTS AND TH REE (3) LO N G COURSE EVENTS INCLUD- ING RELAYS.

Should the be t te r swimmers sacrifice thei r indi- vidual effort to s t rengthen the relay team, or should they swim relays and lose individual titles by de- fault. Local individual event winners may be only sixth best by past performances and seeding, ye t she or he will receive communi ty acclaim as the Jr .

JUNIOR SWIMMER OF THE MONTH

JOE STETZ, JR.

KNICKERBOCKER'S

MEDLEY SMASHER

In today's trend toward stroke specialization, the spot- light does not fall very often on the performances of medley swimmers. Because of the new trend, or due to the fact that the individual medley is omitted from the Olympic games, most swimmers as they approach the longer distances go for the one or two favorite strokes.

Joe Stetz is swimming the longer distance individ- ual medleys, liking them and smashing the records besides.

This 16-year All-American High School Prep Swim ace is the 1959 National Age Group Champion in the 400 meter individual medley with a new record of 5:43.0 (long course). For short course 400 yard Ind. Medley he is ranked 2nd in the 1959 five best times with a 5: 04.0. Joe has also done well in the butterfly, receiving national recognition in 1958 and 59. In April, 1958 he won the 400 yard individual medley Junior National Championship. That same year he was also a member of the 800 yard Junior National Freestyle relay championship and the 4 mile long distance Jun- ior National Championship Team.

He is a product of the Metropolitan Assoc. age group development program. Stetz attends Horace Mann Prep School, Bronx, N. Y., and represents the Knick- erbocker Swim Club. Bob Alexander, Wayne, N. J., has coached this medley smasher for six years, work- ing him out about 2 hrs. per day.

His next goal is college and a shot at the 1964 Olympics.

FLORIDA SAYS "BIGGEST MEET EVER"?

Hialeah, F l a . - Though it's been four months since t h e F o u r t h Annual International Invitational Swim Regatta was held in Miami (Aug. 25-29), Age Group swim-

m e r s and officials of the Metro Miami Swimming A s s n. s t i 11 haven't been able to catch their breaths. And, well they can't, for "the five-day meet was the largest ever held on the east coast," says Bill Burrell, swim coach of the Coral Gables Swimming Assoc.

Two pools were used; a 50-meter long course and 25 y a r d s h o r t course. The Regatta was alter- nated with the long course used one day and the short course the next. 92 long course events and 92 short course events were held. This was further broken down into the following A g e - G r o u p classifica- tions:

15-16 Age-12 long and 14 short course. 13-14 age-10 long and 10 short course. 11-12 a g e - 1 1 long and 9 short course. 9-10 age-7 long and 7 short course. 8 and under a g e - 6 long and 6 short course

The events included relays and a swimmer could enter all events in their class, including the relays. The meet attracted s w i m m e r s from as far north as New York; west as far as Little Rock, and Nashville. International flavor was added by a strong team from Cuba. Age Group Champions are:

8 & under G i r l s - Jan Krauser, Coral Ridge YC. B o y s - Smiley Johns, Coral Ridge YC. 9-10 Girls--Pam Wheetright, St. Petersburg R.D. Boys-Alberto Raur- rell, Cuba. 11-12 G i r l s - P a t Fleming, Pompano Beach S.A. Boys--Richard Ahrens, S.A. of Palm Beaches. 13-14 Girls-Mary Burbach, Coral Ridge YC. Boys--Steve Florence, Miami Beach R.D. 15-16 Girls-Jane Rohrback, Miami Beach R.D. Boys--John Stetz, Knicker- bocker (NY) SC.

SPA DROPS FINALS IN '60 AGE GROUP MEETS

Los A n g e l e s - Age Group Swim- mers competing in the SPAAAU Age Group Swimming meets will have to do their best in heats, it was revealed this month by John Fellows, Swim Comm. Chairman. Due to the tremendous increase of competitors in 1959, the SPA has completely revamped their meet program for the coming sea- son.

It took a lot of persuasion of the parents by the coaching committee that, by elimination of the after- noon finals, a faster, better con- trolled meet could be developed. The meets will be patterned after the successful senior meets held this past year.

The new set-up f o l l o w s th i s formula:

1. All e n t r ie s must carry the swimmer's best time for each event entered at the distance specified. Entries must be signed by coach.

2. A card file on all Assoc. swim- mers will be kept by Swim Comm. Sect. If entries show a higher time than on Comm. card file then en- tries' time will be changed.

3. Heats will be scheduled ac- cording to times with slowest times in early heats and the final heat to race swimmers with the fastest times.

4. Awards will be given to 1st, 2nd & 3rd place winners on a time basis with heat winners also re- ceiving an award. A swimmer can receive but one award in any one event.

5. There will be a c o m p l e t e elimination of classified meets, also elimination of time standards for eligibility in Age Group Meets.

6. For two day meets, classes 8 and under, 9-10, 11-12 will swim in the mornings, 13-14, 15-16 in the afternoons. 5-6 group will be eliminated.

Jr. Olympics and Special Meets will rever t back to the regular pro- gram of heats and finals.

To the swimmers, this means two half days of competition with no long delays between events . . . no hurr ied lunches and most im- portant, the attainment of a com- petitive edge without let-down.

Slower swimmers will be stimu- lated to faster times by promotion to faster heats as their competitive times are lowered.

'7

In 1959, SPA held 11 sanctioned open age group meets and 7 classi- fied meets.

One has only to look at the fig- ure to realize there are just not enough hours in a day to schedule a proper meet. Open age group meets averaged b e t w e e n 256 swimmers with 714 entries to 683 individual swimmers making 1,698 entries. 1,698 entries in a 6-lane pool make about 283 heats.

Classified Age Group meets tal- lied between 265 to 501 swimmers per meet with 594 to 1,075 individ- ual entries.

CENTRAL AAU TO HOLD SWIM CLINIC

Oak Park, Ill.--A swim clinic will be held on January 16 at Portage Park, Chicago covering new rule changes made by t h e AAU con- vention and officiating. Ernest T. Sigler, Chairman of the Swim- ming Officials C o m m . o f t h e CAAU, is planning a long range program to build u p a h i g h l y skilled and experienced group of people that will be competent t o officiate at meets of national or in- ternational calibre. Said Sigler, "This is not to be construed as criticism of the officiating at the Pan Am Games, 90% done by CAAU people, w i t h no c o m - plaints." Suggestions and opinions are requested-mai l to E. T. Sigler, 120 N. Oak Park Ave., Oak Park, Ill.

AGE GROUPS CLASS SCORE AT PAN AM

Chicago, I l l . - The United States Women's Team that won the Pan American Games in Chicago, Aug. 27-Sept. 7, was so outstan.ding in performance that it will be most difficult for future teams to match it. Seven of the 16 girls who made up the American team were still of Age Group class at the time of the games.

All three U.S. swimmers in each individual event broke the Pan Am record . . . t hey broke 3 world rec- ords and every Pan Am record in 8 events. Only one silver medal was lost by the girls and they won both relays.

On the U. S. Men's Team, Santa Clara Swim Club's Steve Clark, 16, made the team as an alternate on the freestyle relay.

Listed are Junior Swimmers and their Pan Am achievements.

l i; I(RIS ~' I(RISTENSON

Meet Kris Kristenson, J U N I O R SWIMMER'S COACH OF THE MONTH. The selection of Kris was not a difficult cho ice . . . fo r as United States Women's Pan American Coach, he justified his se- lection by the AAU by guiding the U. S. team to an outstanding effort. His training and handling of the team with 7 of the 16 members in Age Group class, was such that all improved on their performances done in trials and in most cases did their best time ever.

HE MAKES

THEM SWIMMERS

His preselected squad of "youngster-veterans" was molded by Kristenson into a harmonious effort that resulted in a U.S. team performance that will be seldom equaled. The "girls" were unanimous in their outspoken praise of Kristenson as a coach and advisor.

But the success and respect that Kris Kristenson won, has not come without prodigidous effort and years of work in the sport.

Kris was born 44 years ago in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. His family moved, when he was six, to Southern California. From the Los Angeles Public School systems, he went to Los Angeles Jr. College. While at J .C. he was a member of both the swim and water polo teams.

From Jr. College he attended Occidental College. Before graduating in 1940 with majors in Physical Education and Biology, he was back in ~he swim as a member of the swim and water polo teams.

Kris placed first in 50 Free and 2nd in 150 Back and third in Diving in the Conference meet. He was high point man on the Occidental Polo team which won the Conference championships for 3 years.

Came the war and Kris served in the Navy in Gene Tunney's Athletic Program. After discharge in 1945 as a Lieutenant, he taught in the Los Angeles Public School system.

Kris Kristenson still couldn't keep away from his love of the water. Winning deep water ocean swims and serving as Pool Director for the L. A. Recreation Dept. in summer and off hours only whetted his en- thusiasm for the sport.

KRISTENSON OPENS SWIM SCHOOL In 1950 the Kris Kristenson Swim School was

opened at Sherman Oaks. The facilities were limited. Age Group was almost unheard of in Southern Cali- fornia. The only meets for Junior Swimmers was the Annual Los Angeles Examiner Meet and inter-club meets, with Capt. Paul Nass of Brentwood Swim School.

On his first Age Group team was Judy and Nancy Lockridge, Steve Prockter, Bobby and Patti Bennett, Sheila, Claudia and Darlene Anderson, Carolyn and Brian Murray, Anne Muesdorffer, Gail Human, Carolyn and Chris Christie. All 8 years or younger.

000

This group was joined by John Jurgenson who rode his bike 31/2 miles 3 nights a week for teaching after swim school hours, and Susan Richter. Lessons con- sisted of 3 workouts a week with 1 hour for swim- ming and 1/2 hour for diving. Divers Donna Russell and Louita Nicholas received their first formal train- ing at Kristenson's in 1951. In 3 years Kris had out- grown his pool and a new outdoor 25 yard pool was built on Victory Blvd. in No. Hollywood. Joining his team in his new school were Rodney and Brian Car- gill, Mimi and Patti K e m p n e r - and a short time later Marianne Hargreaves, the latter two destined to be among America's greatest breaststrokers.

COMPETITIVE SWIMMING Though National Age Group records had been

started and records were being recorded in Calif., only the Pacific Assoc. had made any sizeable prog- ress in Age Group Swimming. SPA district was not active and the impetus for Age Group Swimmers was being supplied by the Southern Calif. Youth Swim- ming Assoc: with active help by Kris, Alex Kempner, Joseph McGuigan and many others.

Kris, with one of the few 25 yard pools, sponsored with the Valley Times, the first short course Jr. Olympics in 1953 and 1954. Now the Kris Kristenson School was really in the swim. To the team, in 1953, was added Mike Shephard, John Rackin and Richard Karrell.

And so it went. Age Group Swimming became stronger and more popular in Southern California. The SPA Swim Committee had now become a potent governing body in Southern Calif. with larger meet schedules, new rules and cohesive long range plan- ning.

Today, Coach Kristenson works his team 3 times a week, 11/2 hours per work-out. In summer they have 5 days a week and all are given long course training at the local Park and Recreation Dept. 50 meter pool. Swimmers going to Nationals work out daily, 5 or 6 times a week. He uses the "interval" method of train- i n g . . , subscribes to the use of vitamins or wheat g e r m . . , advises body building exercises to permit the body to keep up strength with growth.

On the subject of races in greater distances for younger swimmers, Kris said, "I 'm in favor of it. It gives them a chance to think about their s t r o k e . . . gives a better chance to swimmers who have not the physical development . . , is a greater stroke devel- o p e r . . , and is the best conditioner. As a matter of fact, for the average Age Grouper, 7 or 8 is early enough to start competition unless he or she has developed e a r l y . . , of course there are always ex- ceptions."

Presently on his swim team are *Marianne Har- greaves, 19, *Patti Kempner, 17, *Judy Lockridge, 16, *Bobby Bennett, 16, Jean Hansen, 16, Rosalind Rogers, 15, Rich McGeagh, 15, Mike Shephard, 14, Nancy Lockridge, 14, Babbie Anderson, 13, Patti Bennett, 13, Howard Boren, 13, Jeffrey Calvert, 13, Rodney Cargill, 12, Brian Cargill, 8. *Training for 1960 Olympics.

Also on training programs are 20 swimmers 7 to 13 years of age.

FINDING TALENT Asked for the secret of finding his swimmers, Kris

rep l ied-"The kids come to school to l e a r n . . , some just have a feel for the water, it comes to them natu- rally. Some learn well and have not as much natural ability, but hard work makes up for the lack. Still the odds are against them." Kris continues, "We get back yard pool swimmers whose parents think they are whizzes. We give them a performance trial and if they show anything, they are placed in Intermedi- a t e - A d v a n c e d class for stroke refinement." Kris added, "Age Group Swimming is a family affair. It involves self sacrifice by the entire f ami ly . . , from Mother driving the swimmer to school, waiting around during the lesson, to the whole family chang- ing their week-end plans to take in the meets."

Kris strongly believes in specialization. Saying, "it seems to be indicated for prime success if a swim- mer is going to go all the way up. At Pan Am., only 2 girls swam in more than one stroke and they fin- ished third."

When asked about the U. S. chances in the 1960 Olympic games he replied,"Our chances look brighter than one year ago. Results from Pan Am. give greater hope to be more dominate in the swimming events. The last Olympiad we dominated only the Men's and Women's Butterfly and were second best in both Men and Women events. With the re turn of Holland to the '60 games, the women's division will be between that country. Australia and the United States. In the men's division it will be between Australia, U.S. and Japan."

Kris Kristenson has taught well. He h~s champi- oned the cause of Age Grouo and Senior Swimming in Southern California for 10 years, and has done much to increase the high standards of competition, good sportsmanship and fair play. His coaching abil- ity, has earned him the respect of coaches the country over. JUNIOR SWIMMER is proud in honoring Kris Kristenson as their coach of the month. (Editor's Note: JUNIOR S W IM M E R will honor a coach each month ]or his outstanding contributions to Age Group Swimming. Our selection will be made easier if clubs, asso- ciations or swimmers will send in complete resumes of their leading coaches. Be sure to include photos.)

5 ASSOCIATIONS BID FOR MEN'S OUTDOOR NATIONALS

By RAY DAUGHTERS, Chairman

Plans for sending a top- ranking swimming t eam to the Olympic Games in Rome are well unde r way. At the convent ion in Miami, December 4th, the Olympic Commi t t ee and the A.A.U. will award the Tryou t s and the Outdoor Nat ional Championships . It is hoped we will be able to set up these events so that compet i tors will have a chance to cover both wi thout too much t ime and expense. I t is hoped tha t prospect ive bidders for both the Championships and the Trials will be in the Middle West. At the pres- ent t ime there are five organizat ions in teres ted in the Outdoor Nat ional Championships for men. As far as the Trials are concerned, it is assumed tha t prospeet ive sponsors will p resent thei r bids at the same t ime in Miami.

The dates for the Outdoor Nat ionals would a lmost have to be the last weekend in J u l y wi th the Olym- pie Trials following the nex t week. This would en- able the Commit tees to place their en t ry b lanks to the Execut ive Board of the Olympic Commit tee for approval by the 10th of August , which is the dead- line.

The Men's Swimming Commi t t ee will select first and second in the individual events for the Olympic t eam and the first six men in the 200-meter freestyle, which will m a k e up the relay," and two al ternates . The medley re lay t eam has to be chosen f rom the ent i re t eam members .

The Opening Ce remony of the Olympic Games in Rome is the 25th of August . The swimming events will be the first week of the Games instead fo the last week as has been done in the past.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH BUFFALO?

Buffalo, N . Y . - Flo Klahn, swim coach of the De laware Y M C A girls ' swim t e a m and Cha i rman of Wom en ' s Swimming in the Niag- a ra Distr ict AAU, repor ts a lmost complete public apa thy t o w a r d age g roup swimming in the Buffalo area. She fu r t he r s tates that, "we have a n u m b e r of beaut i fu l swim- ming l~ools in and a round Buffalo schools and clubs, bu t not one will open them for the p u r p o s e of swimming meets, or ren t an hour a few days a week to a t e am for pract ice."

Severa l years ago, beginning wi th four girls, Coach K 1 a h n s tar ted a girl 's age g roup team. The team, De laware Y M C A of Buffalo, now number s 55 girls. Tra in ing is accomplished in the De laware Y's 20 yd. x 20 ft. pool. Specta tor space is l imited to 40. This is the only place avai lable to t ra in and hold meets.

Also using these l imited facili- ties is a boys ' age g roup t eam of 36 and the full 800 m e m b e r Y. Coach Klahn has the s taggering sum of F O U R and O N E - H A L F (41/2) hrs. per week fo pool use.

the team. Dur ing the win ter she holds four or five age group meets wi th only r ibbon awards . (Winter in Buffalo is a long season, 8-10 months.)

T h r o u g h he r en thus iasm and effort, the following girl 's age- grou p teams in the Niagara Dis- t r ict are operat ing: J a m e s t o w n YMCA, H e n r y VanZanten , Phy. Dir.

I t is obvious tha t if Coach K lahn and her age group p rog ram is to succeed, m u c h less grow, Buffalo will have to look forward. Other communi t ies in t h e U. ARE JUNIOR OLYMPICS LOSING TFIEIR CLASS? continued from page 4 Olympic Champion (especially t rue in smaller age group districts) , wi th slight chance for national place- ment. The dissenters say, "Would not a re laxat ion of limiting rules, even to permit t ing a swimmer to enter four (4) events st imulate be t te r competit ion."

RELAY COMPETITION R e l a y s . . . oh what a hea r tb reake r when an ent i re

team of four cannot compete because one member of the team failed to show due t o illness or other rea- son. And an alternate, if all do show, loses the oppor- tuni ty to compete in one or two events , as the case may be. Younger competi tors may not move up in Age-Group. There ought to be a solution to this.

Certificates of p a r t i c i p a t i o n . . . t h e y too add up to trouble. "Something for everyone ." Should it be a "souveni r" or a certificate to be earned? Earned by per formance requ i rement perhaps, but in some man- ner to give it m e a n i n g . . , or CLASS.

Certificates could be given to 4th, 5th & 6th place winners at district meets, or to heat winners. Any award should be an award for merit . At one of the Jr. Olympic meets I a t tended last year , more certifi- cates were swept up by pool a t tendants af ter the meet, than were taken home by the contestants.

TRIALS AND FINALS Another r a the r obnoxious ru le to the antagonists

of the Jr . Olympic rules, is the allowance of districts to hold trials and finals as much as three months apart. On this, hinges a big gripe, for even though a swimmer has qualified in a pre l iminary meet at one age level, he may compete in the finals at the same age level even though an age change occurs. This is in direct confiict with AAU, which rules contestant 's age on date of meet determines the age group he may enter. In some districts unregis tered athletes are permi t ted to compete.

The surge of bi t terness that breaks into the open on many occasions is best summed up by a l ead ing coach. "The Jr . Olympic program is r un by t rack and field men. There isn't a swim man on the com- mittee. They don ' t know our p r o b l e m s . . , let the people who know swimming, r u n swimming."

JR. OLYMPIC RECORDS Let 's look at the R E C O R D . . . by record, we mean

the National Jun ior Olympic Records. If they meet all A A U requirements , w h y not submit to the Na- tional Age Group Swim Commit tee for considera- t ion in thei r annual five best times. Or are they "second class" marks? En te r the National Jr . Olym- pic t imes with Age-Group, and if they are in the five best times, an asterisk nex t to t ime would indicate it is the best National Jun io r Olympic time. In some districts, Jr . Olympics are the only programs that give competi tors the oppor tuni ty to swim relays.

It is now necessary to check both Nat. Age Group and Jr . Olympic records for the best performances.

Summing up, one must almost conclude that the National Age Group program has kept abreast a n d / o r developed its p rogram to fit the t remendous growth of age group swimming, while the more pub- licized Jr . Olympic program is static and losing "class" it so r ichly deserves.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This ]eature in no way reflects the writer's viewpoint or opinions. It is our way o] exposing to the open discussions and criticisms heard during the last ~ew years at different district meets by those active or.connected with age group swim- ming. It is our sincere hope that Junior Swimmer will serve as a sounding board ~or constructive criti- cisms or praise. The editor is wholeheartedly behind the National A A U Jr. Olympics Committee ]or the work it has done and is continuing to do. It is a most intelligent approach to mass participation in swim- ming, a sport which is rapidly becoming a major sport and one that certainly ]~ts into this nation's "Youth Fitness Program."

PHOENIX HOSTS HOLIDAY FESTIVAL Age-Group Swimming and Diving will get a real

boost from Arizona with the inauguration of the Mid-Winter Aquatic Festival to be held in Phoenix on December 27, 28, and 29th.

Sponsored by the Industrial Optimists Club of Phoenix, the meet is expected to draw a large entry. The Industrial Optimists are co-operating with the Arizona Association A.A.U., under whose sanction the meet is being held, in encouraging age-group swimming and providing competition for contestants in both aquatic sports. This is a follow-up on the program started by the fabulous Saguaro Swimming and Diving Festival held in Phoenix each year over the Memorial Day holiday.

Both meets have as director W. E. (Bill) Greene, past president of the Arizona Association A.A.U. Assisting him are Dick Smith as Technical Advisor and Dick Day, Optimists Co-ordinator.

Like the Saguaro, the Mid-Winter Aquatic Festi- val will award Trophies to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. Ribbons will be awarded to other final qualifiers in both swimming and diving events.

In keeping with the Arizona Association's policy of affording competition for both Age-Group and Senior contestants, Senior events have been in- cluded in this meet. Awards will be the same for both Age-Group and Senior events.

Scene of the Festival will be the plush Ramada Inn in Phoenix. The heated and filtered pool is six lanes, 25 meters in length. Official 1 and 3 meter div- ing boards are Duraflex with adjustable fulcrum.

Diving events will be held on Sunday, Dec. 27th only beginning at 9:00 A.M. Swimming preliminaries will be held on Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 28th and 29th at 9:00 A.M. with finals at 3:00 P.M.

Entries for the Mid-Winter Aquatic Festival close at midnight, December 12, 1959. All entries must be made on the Official Entry Form and be accom- panied by entry fees. For entries write William E. Greene, 711 W. Windsor Ave., Phoenix, Ariz.

Mike Green, age 16, Phoenix, is one of the local competitors swimming in the Phoenix Mid-Winter Aquatic Festival. Mike is the 1959 Junior National 100 meter Backstroke Champion.

Frances Hardesty, just passed 16 years, Tucson, is Arizona's hope in the Senior women's 100 meter breaststroke in the Phoenix Mid-Winter Aquatic Festival, Dec. 27-29. Frances is the 1959 Junior National 100 meter breaststroke titleholder.

LYNDEN S.S. TOPS BIG 6 LOOP Buena Park, Calif.- Bud Lynden S.S., Arcadia, swam off with the SPA Big Six Winter Conference Swimming Cham- pionship on Nov. 15 at Los Coyotes Country Club pool. Los Coyotes CC was runner-up, followed by Sunny Hills SC, The Glades, Hawaiian Village SC and Sea Horse SS.
