In the Spotlight......Jon Bergman

Early in 2019, while looking for substitute organists, contact information for Jon Bergmanwas shared with us here at Our Redeemer. He played here for the first time in February lastyear. Six people from Our Redeemer approached him about applying for the job! He did, andon May 1 , he officially began as our Music Director. On February 23 of this year, he becamest rd

a member of the Our Redeemer church family!Jon really enjoys the task of selecting choir music and adding small groups (i.e. brass)

to worship. He's doing well at choosing hymns, even ones he's not familiar with yet. Jon hasplayed piano and organ since he was about 12 years old. He's still taking lessons too!

Jon is a Mechanical Application Engineer at R.L. Kistler - designing and helping to sellcommercial and industrial air conditioning/heating (HVAC) systems. It's a COOL job in a HOTmarket! His hobbies include: hiking, biking (road and mountain), building PCs/gaming, boardgames and collecting vinyl/audio equipment. Old school records are big again!

If you wanted to know something interesting about him, he shares: "My junior year ofcollege at RPI, I was the conductor of the pep band for all of the hockey and football games. I'm a huge metalhead, especially symphonic power metal and folk metal!" The choir isn't up tometal (yet), but I'm sure Jon is thinking about how to work that in!

A Message From the Pastor

Spring is coming, so says the groundhog! As the calendar turns to March, hope forSpring springs eternal! We know it still mightbe a while, but we know it's coming!

So is Lent - in fact, by the time you readthis, it will be Lent. We embark on this 40 dayseason of repentance (turning around theparts of our lives that we aren't happy with tothings we are happy with), with confession(sharing where we feel we have done wrong),and hopefully with acts of service new to us toshow our resolve to be different and betterpeople in Jesus' name.

While we journey, we hear about Jesusheading towards Jerusalem. We hear ofpeople he encounters, and how he bringshealing and wholeness to those he touches. We hear growing resistance to him and hismessage from those who are called to changetheir ways and don't want to. We hear thegrowing urgency to follow as called, a callingwe have had and heard for a while, but thevolume of which gets turned up in Lent.

This year, we'll join in worship on Sundaysin Lent, taking a look at the chalice shapedmission statement we have had for years. We'll look at the words and see what they sayto us now! Take a look at your copy of theannual report to read what it says.

On Wednesday evenings, we'll worshipTaize style, joining in quiet contemplativesong. We'll take a look at another song,"Beneath the Cross of Jesus," a favorite ofmany and often sung during Lent. We'll lookat some of the words and themes, and howthey help us focus during this season of theChurch Year. We'll join in Soup and Breadsuppers starting March 4 as usual, beginningth

at 6 pm or when you can get there. On March 8 , our older confirmationth

students will lead us on a gameshow of "AreYou Smarter than a 5 Grader?" This shouldth

be a fun activity for all involved. It might meana different (OH NO!! DIFFERENT?!?) way to

join in fellowship that day, but it will be fun andgood for us all to take part! Coffee andgoodies will still be available.

So what other different things can you doduring Lent to improve your walk with Jesus? Maybe you can find a devotional book(available at Our Redeemer or many otherplaces) that can help you focus your attentionon Jesus for part of the day. Maybe you couldpick out a friend, neighbor, or brother or sisterin Christ who is homebound and visit them, get to know them better, help them witherrands, and brighten part of their day forthem. Come to worship, find a ministry teamthat interests you, and serve sharing yourgifts! Find a new hobby or place to volunteerthat could use your help. Be blessed as youbecome a blessing to others.

Lent is often a quiet, penitential season. It is also one that calls for action, for grace, forpassion, for service. It is NOT a time to just sitand gaze at our navels and think about Jesus. It is a time, as every day is, to gaze into Jesus'eyes and follow. To see Jesus in the eyes ofthose around us, and serve. To see injusticeor isolation and speak and work to correct it. And to see those who don't know Jesus, andto introduce him through your words anddeeds.

So blessings on your season of Lent. Blessings on your walk with Jesus. Blessingsas you explore your calling to live as abaptized Child of God and discover all kinds ofjoys and surprises that come from your beingblessed while being a blessing to others.

~Peace

Mental Health Minute

Anxiety: a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typicallyabout an imminent event orsomething with an uncertainoutcome.

According to the Mayo Clinic,"Experiencing occasional anxiety is a normalpart of life. However, people with anxietydisorders frequently have intense, excessiveand persistent worry and fear about everydaysituations. Often, anxiety disorders involverepeated episodes of sudden feelings ofintense anxiety and fear or terror that reach apeak within minutes (also known as panicattacks). These feelings of anxiety and panicinterfere with daily activities, are difficult tocontrol, are out of proportion to the actualdanger and can last a long time. You mayavoid places or situations or triggers toprevent these feelings. Symptoms may startduring childhood or the teen years andcontinue into adulthood."

"There's no way to predict for certain whatwill cause someone to develop an anxietydisorder, but you can take steps to reduce theimpact of symptoms if you're anxious:• Get help early. Anxiety, like many other

mental health conditions, can be harder totreat if you wait.

• Stay active. Participate in activities thatyou enjoy and that make you feel goodabout yourself. Enjoy social interaction andcaring relationships, which can lessen youranxiety.

• Avoid alcohol or drug use. Alcohol anddrug use can cause or worsen anxiety. Ifyou're addicted to any of these substances, quitting can make you anxious. If you can'tquit on your own, see your doctor or find asupport group to help you."

Our church library nowcontains the books ChristmasJars, and Christmas JarsReunion by Jason F. Wright,in addition to a copy of the

“Food & Faith”

That is the title of a programoffered to students at University atAlbany on Tuesday evenings. Cornerstone Campus Ministry hasseveral Congregational Partners who

support the ministries they do on campus, "Food & Faith" being one of the primaryexamples. Our Redeemer has a long standingrelationship as a Congregational Partner. Inrecent years, our Youth Group hosted "Food& Faith" on two occasions.

When a congregation volunteers to host, they agree to provide a hot meal for thestudents and staff at Cornerstone, as well asany members of their own congregation whoplan to attend the event. They also plan aninteractive devotional activity to do with thestudents after everyone is finished eating. This is a fun and engaging way to get to knowthe students and learn about what they do atCornerstone.

As a Board Member, I feel called tomaintain a strong relationship between OurRedeemer and Cornerstone Campus Ministry. The 2018-2019 academic year was a bitchallenging as the program adjusted to their"new home" in the Campus Center. As acongregation, we did not commit ourselves tohosting a "Food & Faith" event last year due tothe transitions taking place. Now that theyhave settled into their new surroundings, it willbe easier to take on this hosting opportunity.

Our Redeemer will be hosting "Food &Faith" on Tuesday, April 14th. This date fallsduring the public school "spring break". Weare hoping to partner a young person fromSunday School, Confirmation Class or YouthGroup with an adult in the congregation willingto prepare a component of the meal. Peopleof ALL ages are invited to take part. I'd like tostart planning the meal and partnering peopletogether by mid-March. Teams of 2+ can planto do their food preparations at church or intheir own homes, whichever is moreconvenient!!

While ALL volunteers are invited to attendthe event, you are not obligated to attend. Theprimary way for you to serve is by preparingthe meal components (including vegetarianoptions). Typically, there are 20-25 people inattendance and college students CAN EAT!!! We provide the main course, sides/salad,dessert and beverages. Dinner is served atthe Interfaith Center from 6:00-6:45 pm. Theybegin with prayer and then serve buffet-style. Everyone eats like a big family around thetable in the community room. Around 6:45pm, we will lead 30 minutes ofworship/devotions/reflection, etc. Then at7:15, we clean up and we're out the door by7:30 pm. If you are interested in joining thiseffort or simply have questions, please speakto me.
