I, Nomvula Paula Mokonyane, Minister of Environmental Affairs, hereby, in terms of section 22B of the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act, 2003 (Act No. 57 of 2003), withdraw the existing Bird Island Marine Protected Area declared in Government Gazette 26432, Notice No. 696 of 4 June 2004, and declare in terms of section 22A of the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act, 2003 the Addo Elephant Marine Protected Area as set out in the Schedule hereto.
NOMVULA PAULA MOKONYANE MINISTER OF ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS
STAATSKOERANT, 23 MEl 2019 No.42478 5
SCHEDULE
All geographic co-ordinates are determined in accordance with the WGS 84 datum.
Boundaries of the Marine Protected Area
The Addo Elephant Marine Protected Area in the Eastern Cape is an inshore marine protected area, bounded by a series of straight lines sequentially joining the following coordinates A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, and I; and the first coordinate joining the last along the high water mark, including the Sundays estuary (up to point T), as detailed in the Annexure. The area includes the substrata, sea bed, subsoil and water column within these boundaries.
Purpose
The purpose for declaring this Marine Protected Area is:
(a) To contribute to a national, regional and global representative system of marine protected areas, by protecting a linked system of shore, estuarine, bay, island and shelf ecosystems and their associated biodiversity and ecosystem processes in a contiguous coastal conservation area;
(b) to facilitate fisheries management by protecting spawning stock, allowing stock recovery and enhancing stock abundance in adjacent areas, in particular for linefish and abalone resources;
(c) for the protection of threatened species and the physical features and ecological processes on which they depend, including the African Penguin, Cape Gannet and dusky kob;
(d) to protect and regulate a scenic area and its marine wildlife to support sustainable nature-based tourism and a functionally connected coastalmarine system to retain a land-ocean 'sense of place'; and
(e) to protect and provide an appropriate environment for research and monitoring and to promote and contribute to environmental education.
