GOMACO is proud to introducethe GT-3400. It’s a three-track machinewith all of the features that have madeGOMACO the worldwide leader inconcrete paving equipment, includingthe powerful G21 controller, All-TrackSteering, high-speed track motors, andthe patented simultaneous trim/pourprocess. It also has some new andexciting features that put the GT-3400in a class all by itself. There’s nothingremotely like it!

It’s the first curb and guttermachine to be controlled by remotecontrol. The remote control is lightweight, durable and gives theoperator total freedom to move aboutthe operation.

The remote is 11 inches (279 mm)wide, seven inches (178 mm) tall, 4.5 inches (114 mm) deep and weighsonly 6.75 pounds (3.1 kg). All of thenecessary functions, including

vibrator adjustment and an emergencystop, are built into the remote’s smallpackage. It’s powered by a nine volt,off-the-shelf Makita battery, whichmakes it easy to replace if necessary.

Safety is always a priority indesign consideration. Built-in safetyfeatures stop the machine if theremote loses communication or if theremote control turns on its horizontalaxis more than 60 degrees. Thewireless remote features “frequencyhopping” capabilities. The remote isconstantly changing channels andfrequencies to maintain contact withthe GT-3400.

“We spent a great deal of timewith radio manufacturers having themconvince us that these radios arereliable,” Kevin Klein, GOMACO’sVice President of Research andDevelopment, said. “The last thing wewant is any communication lag

between the operator and themachine.”

The remote has the option ofbeing tethered to the machine forareas that do not allow transmitting.For example, projects near airportsand blasting operations restrict radiouse. The contractor simply tethers theremote to the machine and thewireless transmitter is disabled.

“Some contractors are going tosay, ‘I want to be up on the machine,’and they can be,” Scott Pedersen,Research and Development ProjectManager for the GT-3400, said. “Theycan take the radio console right upfront on the platform.”

The GT-3400 features the G21electronic-over-hydraulic controlsystem. GOMACO’s exclusive G21controller makes it possible to havepush-button steering setup. Thecontroller allows the operator to teach

The operator alternated between standing on the platform andwalking beside the machine at an industrial park in St. George, Utah.

the “smart” cylinders to set a desireddegree of leg rotation, so that thetracks do not strike any object inminimum-clearance or zero-clearancerequirements.

The GT-3400 features an all newthree-track footprint with All-TrackSteering. The new footprint featurestwo close tracks on one side and asingle track on the other. The designwas chosen for tight turning radiuscapabilities, getting on and offstringline fast, and the designminimizes machine length. With thefront track positioned behind thetrimmerhead and beside the mold, theGT-3400 is capable of slipformingright up to an object or to the end ofthe stringline. The trimmerheadsimply has to be sideshifted and liftedup out of the way allowing the

machine to pave up to the end of thepass.

Many parking lot designs for curband gutter have sharp angles, shortruns, tight radii, and do not alwaystake slipforming into consideration.The new GOMACO GT-3400 makesthese kinds of jobs possible. Itscompact size from front to back allowsthe machine to get into the small areaswhere one island ends and anotherbegins. And with its large capacityhopper, it’s easier to complete a tightradius, with minimal hand work.

“People designing parking lotsdon’t often take into account the easeof slipforming the curb, and they puta lot of 90 degree corners in them,”Klein said. “We wanted the machineto be able to bring the mold as closeinto those 90 degree corners aspossible to eliminate some of thehandwork going into and coming outof them.”

The GT-3400 can slipform tightradii. A two-foot (610 mm) radiusribbon curb is accomplished becauseof the machine’s unique design. Itutilizes three steer sensors toeliminate guesswork. One sensor islocated at the tip of the front track;one is located at the front of thestainless; and the rear sensor isslightly ahead of the back of thestainless. As the GT-3400 enters theradius, the operator switches fromsensor 1 to sensor 2 with a toggleswitch on the remote. The mold on theGT-3400 is positioned to assure preciseplacement of the concrete through aradius. Also important for a tightradius are travel speed, mix design,

grade, and concrete slump. Thecombination of the hopper and thecharging auger enable the GT-3400 tocontinuously travel through the radiuswithout awaiting concrete delivery.

GOMACO patented the trim/paveconcept in the 1960s and this machinefeatures the latest in trimmertechnology. The GT-3400’s direct-drivetrimmerhead is the most powerful onthe market today. The direct-drivetrimmerhead is driven with a radialpiston hydraulic motor. The trimmer’s closed-loop hydrauliccircuit and radial piston motorprovide 28,684 inch pounds of torqueat the trimmerhead. The 24 inch (610 mm) diameter trimmer isequipped with Kennametal teeth, and the trimmer’s width can be varied from 30 inches (762 mm) to

78 inches (1981 mm). The GT-3400 has a direct-drive,

14 inch (356 mm) diameter, chargingauger to deliver concrete to the mold.The auger was chosen because itminimizes the overall length of themachine. The auger also hydraulicallyslides to help minimize the transportwidth. It slides down for hopperpositioning and receiving concretefrom the trucks and it slides up toreduce transport width.

“We knew it would be a littlemore compact and that an auger couldrun at a little steeper angle to keepoverall length of the machine down,”Klein explained.

Changing molds is quick and easywith the Hook-and-Go mold mountsystem. The operator simply has todrive the GT-3400 up to the mold,

hook the mount to a specialattachment plate on the mold andlower the holddown. The operatorthen hydraulically lifts the mold andgoes back to work slipforming theproject.

The versatile GT-3400 is poweredby a 127 hp (94.7 kW) electronic-controlled Caterpillar® diesel enginewith a remote mounted coolingpackage. The engine, coupled with thestate-of-the-art hydraulic circuitry,results in the most fuel-efficienthorsepower to work-performed ratioin the industry. The cooling packagefan is driven by a hydraulic motorwhich allows the G21 controller tovary the fan speed to match thecooling demand. This results in lessengine horsepower dedicated to thefan and a quieter operation.

The GOMACO G21 and exclusive“smart” cylinders provide simplepush-button steering setup on the GT-3400. The cylinders are attached toa new style of leg. GOMACOengineers have designed a newpiston-style leg that acts like acylinder. The legs have bearings onboth ends of the inner tube so there isno steel-on-steel contact. A keyway isutilized for steering control andadjusting wear pads is a thing of thepast with the new legs.

Two-speed track motors providefast job-site mobility up to 125 feet perminute (38 mpm). It’s one of thefastest tracking speeds in the industry.

The new GT-3400 has beendesigned to be a multi-applicationmachine and will slipform curb andgutter, tight radius, safety barrier,

bridge parapet, sidewalk, recreationalpaths and flat slabs up to six feet (1.8 m) wide. And you can pave witheither stringline or go stringless. Thecontrols interface with stringlesstechnology/3D control systems.

The GT-3400 is the beginning of awhole new class of curb and guttermachines, and we are very excited tobe introducing it to you. It’s all newfrom top to bottom, and hasincorporated the best and latesttechnologies available on the markettoday. There is nothing remotely likeit. It gives contractors the power ofchoice. Right-side or left-side pour,operate from the operator’s platformor on the ground with the remote,stringline or stringless... the choice is yours.

There’s Nothing Remotely Like It...GOMACO Partners with OMNEX Controls to Create the GT-3400’s Remote Control

One of the most exciting newfeatures on the GT-3400 curb andgutter machine is the remote control.The GT-3400 is the first in the industryto be wirelessly controlled and allowsthe operator total freedom to moveabout the project while stillcontrolling the machine.

GOMACO partnered withOMNEX Control Systems ULC in PortCoquitlam, British Columbia, Canada,to develop the control system. It hasbeen a partnership that has workedout well and the final product is veryimpressive. A recent interview withConrad Penner, Business DevelopmentManager for OMNEX, reveals someinsight into the development of theGT-3400’s remote control, theirimpressive background in the controlsindustry, and the worldwideacceptance and usage of theirproducts.

Who is OMNEX Controls and whatdo you specialize in?

OMNEX Controls is a wirelesscompany. We specialize in wirelesscontrol of mobile equipment. We alsohave a second division that specializesin industrial equipment, which is acompletely different environmentwhere radio signals move from fixedpoint to fixed point. Mobile is morecomplex in that we have an operatorand a machine which are both mobileand so there are variables there.OMNEX specializes in both on-roadand off-road mobile equipment. Ourcompany was officially incorporatedin 1986, so we’ve been at it for 20years now.

What’s your experience in the concreteindustry?

We’ve been supplying controls toboth concrete boom trucks andconcrete line pumps. What’s

significant there is the robustness ofthe remote control. It’s essentially likeany other tool that the tradespeopleuse. It’s subjected to extremetemperature, vibration, concrete dust,concrete chemicals, and is anextremely harsh environment due tothe chemicals.

Is working in the concrete industry anew application for your company?

No, there are tens of thousands ofsystems on mobile equipment,specifically in the concrete industry.Line pumps are another veryimportant area to us that we’ve beensupplying controls to. What’ssignificant about that, is the concretepump trucks that place concrete overa distance of several hundred feet aregenerally line of sight applications.Line pump applications, the majorityof the time are non-line of sight, theoperator does not see his equipmentat all. It’s very significant that ourradios work in either line of sight ornon line of sight, provided they’re inthe parameters of what we specifiedthe product to do.

When you first get started with aclient, like GOMACO, how do youbegin the process of developing aremote control that will operate acurb and gutter machine?

We take on the role of theconsultant, initially. Yes, we have a lotof products and ultimately we will sella product/service, but initially wealways take on the role of theconsultant and we want to propose anA and possibly a B solution. We havea long list of questions or worksheets/fact finders and we go throughthat process. That’s something thatScott Pedersen, GOMACO’s GT-3400project manager, did. He had tounderstand these parameters andprovide us with answers. What weneed to do is get someone like Scottup to speed as quickly as possible onwhat the key parameters are. What wecan do and what we cannot do.GOMACO gave us a very well written

set of specifications. We knew whatGOMACO required and then we metwith our own R&D staff to do thedesign work and incorporate all of thedetails that GOMACO required in thesystem.

How do you determine the design andthe look of the remote control?

Ultimately, we create what we calla portable dashboard that the operatorwill strap on and carry with him. He’sgoing to use this portable dashboardwith potentiometers and switches tocontrol the machine exactly the wayhe would if he was standing at themachine console. We create theportable dashboard to be a veryreasonable facsimile of the controllerhe’s comfortable operating on themachine. This has to be anenvironment that he becomesaccustomed to very quickly. In otherwords, it has to look almost exactlylike what he’s always been using, theonly difference is, he doesn’t havewires attached and he’s not standingon the machine he’s operating.Ergonomics is another key issue, andwe have a lot of different options forcreating those ergonomics. We need acertain amount of real estate so wecan build the ergonomics and load itwith hardware, the buttons, theswitches and the potentiometers. Wehave to create room so the operator,with a pair of winter gloves on, canoperate all of the switches.

Will international contractors be ableto operate the GT-3400 wireless allover the world?

We have been able to build radiosthat will satisfy the vast majority ofglobal requirements. That was verysignificant for the design group atGOMACO. This system incorporates a2.4 GHz frequency hopping spreadspectrum radio that can work almostanywhere in the world.

What is a 2.4 GHz frequency hoppingspread spectrum radio?

The wireless engine that drivesthe GOMACO remote control is anOMNEX Trusted Wireless™ 2.4GHzspread spectrum frequency hoppingradio. The radio derives its robustnessfrom its ability to rapidly frequencyhop between numerous narrow bandradio channels inside a license-free

bandwidth. By hopping many times asecond, and by constantly updatingthe signals from the operator’scontroller on each hop, the radio isable to withstand high levels ofinterference that may affect someupdates, but can never affect them all.Since each update is error checked,and the time between updates ismeasured in tens of milliseconds, anyencounter with interference isseamless to the operator.

Do you design and manufacture all ofyour components in-house or do yourely on outside suppliers?

We design in-house and wemanufacture in-house. We’ve decidedthat’s the only way we’re going tocontrol quality. We can do prototypes,short runs and customizations veryquickly and accurately. Once we gointo production and a problempotentially pops up, we can respondto that within a day, as opposed to ifwe’re doing things overseas, thenyou’d be talking about months. That’snot acceptable. Our system isextremely reliable. We’ve put a lot ofchecks and balances in place,and of course we’ve done thisover the last 20 years.

That holds true with the batteryand keeping things simple. It’sjust a regular nine-volt Makitabattery that can be bought inany hardware store.

We decided a long time agoto use non-proprietary batteriesbecause when you look at theoverall system that GOMACOhas, the only maintenance onthe system is the battery. Ifthat’s the only maintenance, wedon’t want to drive people nutswith proprietary batteries andproprietary charging systems.What we’ve used is standard,off-the-shelf, and you can go toany hardware store to buy anew battery or the chargingsystem for it. We’ve made itvery simple.

The remote has built in safetyfeatures on it to keep everyoneworking around the machinesafe. Could you explain those?

We learned a lot about safetyfrom the railroad industry. There

are so many checks and balances builtinto the wireless systems there andwe’ve built those same checks andbalances into GOMACO’s. It has a tiltwarning system and it is an excellentfeature to have. In many industries,they call it “Man Down.” He’s fallenover and we can program the machineto respond to that signal. It means that as soon as it sees a tilt of over 60 degrees on its axis, it will shutdown the machine. We have an E-stopbuilt into it as well that sits right inthe center of the remote control.There’s a lot of safety built into thesystem. GOMACO has also built two-way communication into thesystem, so that’s another level ofsafety/redundancy. There are anumber of things we’re displaying onthe portable dashboard that theoperator is carrying. He’s seeing anumber of indicator lights that aretelling him a certain operation isrunning, besides just visually lookingat it with line of sight.

in an area that doesn’t allow wirelesscontrol.

Yes, there are two significantthings about the tether. We don’t putit there because we think the remote isgoing to fail. We believe the wirelesssystem is going to work just fine.However, the tether is available in theevent the machine is going to be used

in an area where wireless is notallowed. Let’s say it’s roadconstruction and you get into an areawhere they’re doing some blasting nottoo far away. Typically, the blasterswill ask you to turn off all of yourradios. If the operators want to keepoperating their equipment, they havethe option to just simply tether the

remote to the machine and it will shutthe radio off. That’s the number onereason for putting that tetherconnector there. The second reasongoes back to the whole idea of theonly maintenance on the system is thebattery. If the battery were to go deadand wasn’t usable, but the operatorshave to keep going and don’t have

any other way of getting a battery,they can simply go and tether it andbypass the battery.

Whenever we’ve taken the GT-3400and remote into the field for testing,the operators never want to give theremote back to us. It’s fun to see thatthey’re excited about the product.

I think a lot of your customers aregoing to have fun with it. It’s alwaysinteresting for us to find out what thevalue of it is to the end user. Yes,safety is one and efficiency is another.A lot of people can’t even imagine yetwhat they’re going to end up doingwith it, but they will find ways.They’ll find they have more freedom

to move about, that they can do betterquality control of the product, orstand in another position that they’venever been able to stand at before...and hopefully they’ll have fun whilediscovering all these new things.

Twehous Excavating’s history began in1959 when Frank and LaVerne Twehous became land

improvement contractors. They started their company inJefferson City, Missouri, with two employees.

The company purchased their first GOMACO, aCommander III, in 1989. It was one of the first in thecountry to have the three-track 16 foot (4.9 m) wideGOMACO paving package. Twehous used it to pave a 16 foot (4.9 m) wide pavement with integral curb up anddown a 17 percent grade on one of their first pavingprojects. The project was McClung Park in Jefferson City.

Twehous added a curb and gutter machine, aGOMACO Commander II, to their inventory in 1995. Acrew of six men placed 4500 feet (1372 m) of curb andgutter in an eight-hour shift during the Commander II’sfirst pour.

Today, Twehous has over 100 employees working inseveral company divisions, including concrete flatwork,concrete bridge, excavating and grading. They slipformapproximately 40,000 feet (12,192 m) of curb and gutter and20,000 feet (6096 m) of sidewalk every year. This pastsummer, they decided it was time to upgrade theirCommander II and purchase a new machine.

“We were looking for a machine that is dependable,easy to operate, easy to maintain, and has excellent product

support through both the manufacturer and thedistributor,” Ed Twehous, vice president of TwehousExcavating, explained. “I did look at all available machineson the market and nothing compares to GOMACO. Ialways check out features and prices on all comparablebrands before making a purchase, and I always make myequipment purchase decisions based on value.

“I’ve got a history with GOMACO and their distributor,Fabick CAT, and both companies have always deliveredwhat they promised, when they promised. Benny Walkerand Tom Held with Fabick CAT are knowledgeable aboutthe products and I trust what they say.”

Twehous purchased a new GOMACO GT-3600, whichmatched all of their machine requirements. One of theirfirst projects with their new GT-3600 was slipformingapproximately 11,000 feet (3353 m) of curb and gutter onthe Christy Drive Extension project on the south edge ofJefferson City. The project connects four of Jefferson City’smajor roadways, Ellis Boulevard, State Route B, State Route179 and US Highway 54. It is also the new access to 150 acres (60.7 ha) of new commercial property on JeffersonCity’s south side.

The project included a new 36 foot (11 m) wide streetwith curb and gutter on both sides. It involved blasting andmoving approximately 220,000 cubic yards (168,203 m3) ofrock, installing 3000 lineal feet (914 m) of reinforcedconcrete pipe, constructing a reinforced concrete boxculvert, installing 1500 feet (457 m) of guard rail, installing2500 lineal feet (762 m) of fence, and slipforming 11,000 feet(3353 m) of curb and gutter and 8000 lineal feet (2438 m) of

“It was our very first pour on the project and it was thesteepest grade,” Twehous said. “We didn’t do anythingspecial to the GT-3600 for the project. It made the pour onthe 12 percent grade right out of the box.”

The curb profile was a Type-A curb and gutter with asix inch (153 mm) tall curb on top of a 30 inch (762 mm)gutter. They used a 6.5 sack cement, 4000 psi (30 MPa)concrete mix with a two inch (51 mm) slump. Productionaveraged 2,150 lineal feet (655 m) per day.

Twehous runs a four-man curb and gutter crew, anoperator, a chute man and two concrete finishers. Twoadditional men follow the machine installing expansionjoints every 300 feet (91.4 m), as required by Jefferson Cityspecifications.

The GT-3600 is working out well for Twehous and theircurb and gutter division. They’re enjoying its radiusturning capabilities, the sideshifting trimmerhead andmold, and the finished product.

“We were accustomed to operating the Commander IIwith its sideshifting trimmerhead and it was great,”Twehous said. “With the GT-3600, you can put thetrimmerhead and mold where you need them. It worksbetter in tight spots and allows us to run the machinetracks on the surface or area we choose.”

The new GT-3600 has made everyone involved with itat Twehous happy, including the maintenance staff,concrete crew, finishers and the company’s customers.

“Our maintenance staff likes the ease of maintainingthe machine and the support they receive from GOMACO,”Twehous said. “Our concrete crew likes the ease of machineset up. Our concrete finishers like the product that comesout of the mold. Our customers love the finished product.”

A massive building project istaking place at the old Joliet Arsenalin Elwood, Illinois. The arsenal isbeing converted into the Deer RunIndustrial Park, and houses thenational distribution facilities for amajor department store. Twobuildings there house 3.4 millionsquare feet (315,860 m2) of warehousespace for the store.

L&M Concrete, based out ofElwood, Illinois, was the curb andgutter contractor on the project, andused their GOMACO GT-3600 toslipform 31,000 feet (9449 m) of high-back curb and gutter. Anothercontractor had been hired to paveapproximately 20,000 feet (6096 m) ofdolly pad for the semi-truck trailers tosit on between loading andtransporting.

The contract fell through and left

the development coordinators lookingfor a replacement. They turned toL&M and hoped they’d have ananswer to pave the 10 foot (3 m) wide,eight inch (203 mm) thick pad.

“When the developers firstapproached me about the dolly pad, Itold them I just couldn’t do it,” LesCheney, owner and president of L&MConcrete, said. “Later, I was tellingmy GOMACO distributor, Marty

Ahrendt with Finkbiner EquipmentCompany, about the project and toldhim that I wished there was a littlepaver I could rent. Marty said I didn’tneed a paver, that my 2005 GT-3600could pave 10 feet (3 m) wide.”

GOMACO offers a 10 foot (3 m)wide centermount mold kit. Cheney,Finkbiner and GOMACO engineersworked together to customize the kitto fit the project requirements. Theydetermined early on that Cheneywanted to use the conveyor with aclosed-front mold instead of dumpingdirectly on the ground in front of theGT-3600. The mold is equipped withextra vibration and an auger thatmoves the concrete across the widthof the pad. The mold system connectsto the GT-3600 with added frameworksections that include extensions forthe three tracks so they can be

properly placed forproject requirements.

“GOMACO didsome excellentengineering on thisentire package,” Cheneysaid. “The finishedconcrete pad came outthe back as slick ascould be.”

Production rateswere phenomenal. Theirbest day’s productionsaw them slipforming530 cubic yards (405 m3)of concrete in sevenhour’s time. The GT-3600 was moving so fast that an extra concrete supplierhad to be brought in. At times theslipforming operation was movingalong so well that eight cubic yard(6.1 m3) ready-mix trucks were beingunloaded in under four minutes.

“Most days we’d arrive at the job site at 7 a.m., slipform 1000 feet(305 m) of the dolly pad, which wasapproximately 250 cubic yards (191 m3) of concrete, and we’d be doneby noon,” Cheney said. “When I saydone at noon, I mean done. We wereleaving the site with our tools and themachine cleaned up, and heading toour next project for the day. It wasphenomenal. This project had a verystrong quality control and inspectionrequirements on it, too.”

The GT-3600 put such a nice finishon the final concrete pad that L&M’sfinishers had very little to do. Theyran a bull-float over it and a light

broom finish. Finishers spent most oftheir time putting in expansion jointsevery 100 feet (30.5 m).

“I just can’t imagine how muchman power it would have taken toframe and pour just 1000 or 2000 feet(305 or 610 m) of dolly pad, and thengo back and strip it all down after thepour,” Cheney said. “The GT-3600really worked well for us on thisproject. Because we have this newmold, we’ve picked up more jobs likethis so we have a lot more work linedup for next year. It’s really going tohave an impact on this little familybusiness of mine.”

Cheney started L&M Concrete in1982 specializing in patios anddriveways. His focus soon shifted tocity sidewalks and smaller curb andgutter projects. His company grewfrom there. Within a couple of years,they were handforming approximately200,000 feet (60,960 m) of curb and

gutter per year. In 1990,it was time to get aslipform curb and gutterpaver, they turned toGOMACO and the GT-3600. They’ve beenrunning GT-3600s eversince.

Cheney, his step-sonand GT-3600 operatorRicky Bishop, and othermembers of his teamhave been regularattendees at GOMACOUniversity for severalseasons. Each time they

attend, according to Cheney, theylearn something new and a better ormore efficient way to operate theirmachine.

“We slipform a tremendousamount of curb and gutter in thenorthern Illinois area and I wouldn’tuse anything other than a GOMACO.I personally believe that GOMACO isthe Cadillac of curb and guttermachines,” Cheney said. “But moreimportantly than having a goodCadillac, is a good service team thatbacks up their product. I’m a realsledgehammer mentality-type guyand their service people, as well asFinkbiner’s mechanic, Radar Bazan,are very good and very easy to getalong with. We have a greatrelationship. The way I look at it,GOMACO and Finkbiner Equipmentare just like an extension of L&MConcrete.”

WMC Contracting Company inTrenton, Tennessee, has been in theconstruction business since 1950, andhas specialized in all kinds of slipformconcrete projects. If they think theproject can be slipformed, they’llfigure out a way to do it with theirGOMACO machines, using either oneof their Commander IIIs or GT-3600.

Dennis Garcia, president of WMCContracting, has just as muchexperience in the concrete industry asthe company he’s currently operating.He’s worked as a laborer, equipmentsalesman and in management. He’sseen it all, worked with it all, sold itall, and now that he has the power tomake his own buying decisions, hechooses GOMACO.

WMC has two Commander IIIsthat slipform all of their barrier orparapet projects. Curb and gutterwork is completed with their GT-3600.They complete projects all over thestate of Tennessee and their equipmenthas to be easily transportable, arequirement that is easily achieved byboth the Commander III and GT-3600.

One of their first projects with the new GT-3600 was slipforming11,000 feet (3353 m) of roll-over stylecurb and gutter in Medina, Tennessee.Their work was part of the secondphase of the Southern HillsSubdivision by Clark Family Homes.

“This is the third GT-3600 ourcompany has owned and it’s the bestone by far,” Garcia said. “We like thenew design, and the G21 controller,which makes controlling it so smooth.Everything is smoother on thismachine. We put our new machinetogether, took it out and went to workwith it. We didn’t require a servicemanor any extra training for the newcomputer controls.”

Their new machine is equippedwith the Commander III style legswith “smart” cylinders. They have thetwo-speed track motors that makesmoving the GT-3600 around the jobsite very fast. They also have theoptional auger-style conveyor.

the kind of work that we do,” Garciaexplained. “When we’re in a tightsituation going around a radius, wecan load up the hopper, load up theauger, and then load up the hopper onthe auger to make almost a completeradius before we have to stage a truck.I also like the way it just seems tomove a lot of concrete.”

They also chose to go with theoptional trimmerhead. It’s a direct-drive, radial piston motor that hasmore torque and more power fortough trimming conditions. It’s afeature that WMC is happy to have.On most projects, they’re trimmingthrough compacted gravel with a 95percent compaction requirement.

“We’re always trimming andpouring at the same time on ourprojects,” Garcia explained. “We wentwith the new optional trimmer and ithas made a huge difference. It’s just avery powerful trimmer that does anexcellent job for us.”

Their concrete mix design is astate-approved Class-A slipformconcrete with a required 20 percent flyash content. They like to keep theirsand to rock percentage at 58 percentrock and 42 percent sand for a durableproduct that finishes smoothly. Slumpaverages 1.5 inch (38 mm) for theircurb and gutter projects.

Production is often times

dependent on concrete delivery. It’sone of the few problems WMCContracting has experienced withtheir new GT-3600... it’s too fast.

“Our only limiting productionfactor now is how much concrete wecan get to the machine,” Garcia said.“The suppliers that we work with allthe time know and understand thatwe need ready-mix trucks 15 minutesapart and that timing works well for

us. We run into trouble when we gosomeplace new. They just have troublekeeping up with us.”

WMC does some radius work ontheir projects and they usuallyaverage around five feet (1.5 m). Asize that, according to Garcia, is nobig deal.

“All we do is switch to our secondset of sensors and go around thecorner,” he said. “We don’t doanything special, just go around theradius and keep on going down theline.”

On a typical curb and gutterproject, they like to average 200 cubicyards (153 m3) of production per day.Finishing work is kept to a minimumwith a light broom finish. It’s a stateof Tennessee specification that alljoints are saw cut into the curb andgutter the day following the pour.Joints are saw cut every 10 feet (3 m).

Overall, Garcia and WMC are veryhappy with their GT-3600, but theslipforming equipment is just part ofthe reason why they keep comingback to GOMACO.

“The equipment is great and veryuser-friendly,” Garcia said. “Truthfullythough, I like the people and I liketheir parts response. Their service istop notch and we enjoy being able tosend our guys to their GOMACOUniversity for training. Those aresome of the biggest reasons why wechoose GOMACO.”

Production on a typical curb and gutter project averages 200 cubic yards (153 m3) per day.

This is the third new GT-3600 that WMC Contracting has purchased from GOMACO andthey say it’s the best one yet with all the new features it offers.

The working conditions for curband gutter contractors in southwesternBritish Columbia are extreme, to saythe least. The majority of the work isrenovation on dilapidated roads.Subdivision work is also common, withtwo or more curb profiles on theproject. Mountains and steep grades inthe area also add an element ofdifficulty to a curb and gutter project.

It’s because of these challenges andmore that Winvan Paving Ltd., basedout of New Westminster, BritishColumbia, Canada, has chosen toslipform curb and gutter with aGOMACO Commander III since 1976.They witnessed first-hand theevolution of the Commander III line,its various control systems and newestfeatures.

“The sideshifting trimmerhead andmold has been a great advancement,”Joe Alves, concrete supervisor and 32-year employee of Winvan Paving,explained. “Right now we can startright up at an existing piece of curband go right up and tie into anotherexisting piece of curb with very littlehandwork to do because we cansideshift that trimmerhead out of theway.

“Plus, our first Commander III wasall toggle switches and we like all of

the new computer technology nowwith the G21 controller. It’s been prettysimple for our operator to learn thenew system.”

Winvan tackles all types and sizesof curb and gutter projects, fromsmaller 656 feet (200 m) rehab projectson city streets to subdivisions withthousands of feet of curb and gutter.They like to complete two to three ofthe smaller projects in a single day, sotransportability of a machine is a majorconsideration. Their Commander IIIdrives right up onto a low-boy trailerand is ready to head to the nextproject.

City street rehabilitation projects

can include all kinds of challengingconditions. In British Columbia, oftentimes only half of the road is torn outat a time, keeping one lane open fortraffic. Other times, the new road isalready in place and the curb andgutter has to be poured in a trench nextto the road. The Commander III canaccommodate the changing conditionseach project brings. The legs can bepositioned in several differentconfigurations with All-TrackPositioning (ATP).

“On a lot of our renovating projectswe’re right up tight to existing asphaltand that’s why the Commander III isso versatile,” Alves said. “We canposition our legs and the mold anyplace that we want and we’re able tomanage the project. It works out prettygood.”

Trimming and pouringsimultaneously is another featureWinvan enjoys. The company doestheir own grade preparation and likesto leave the grade about two inches (51 mm) high.

“Sometimes that doesn’t happenand our grade ends up being from fourto five inches (102 to 127 mm) toohigh,” Alves said. “It’s not a problemfor our GOMACO because thetrimmerhead has plenty of power.”

The company has 12 different curb andgutter profiles that they use on projects withintheir working area. Most of their subdivisionsrequire two different profiles and on-site moldchanges. It’s a process that doesn’t slow downproduction, or even concrete delivery.

“We get into a lot of projects where itrequires different kinds of molds and we have tochange over,” Alves explained. “It takes no timeat all and we don’t even stop the concrete fromcoming. We just let them sit there for a little bitas we change the mold and then away we goagain with a different profile of curb.”

New Westminster and the 50 mile (80 km)radius around the city that Winvan works in isvery mountainous with a lot of steep grades.The Commander III has more than enoughpower to slipform the grades.

“We have a lot of mountains around here soit’s always up and down,” Alves explained.“Usually, when we’re pouring downhill, theonly problem we have is sometimes trying toget the concrete out of the truck. But as far aspaving uphill or downhill, we don’t have anyproblems at all with our GOMACO.”

Winvan’s stringline crew typically sets theirstringline at a 39 inch (1000 mm) offset from the gutter line, but they will set it as close as 18 inches (450 mm). Their mix design is astandard slipformable concrete mix with .5 inch(13 mm) sized rock instead of the usual .75 inch(19 mm) rock. The size difference, according toAlves, helps with the final finish and a smoothercurb. Slump averages one inch (25 mm) on their high-back curb and 1.5 inch (38 mm) forroll-over curb.

Production rates vary depending on theproject. On subdivisions, they like to averagearound 3280 feet (1000 m) per day. Jobs with lotsof traffic, tight clearances and extra challenges,Winvan is happy with 1312 feet (400 m) in a day.

“The finish on our curb and gutter has to bevery good in Canada and our Commander IIIworks well for us,” Alves said. “Every 10 feet (3 m) we have to cut in contraction joints andevery 30 feet (9.1 m) there are expansion joints.It keeps our finishers busy.”

A time-saving and work-saving measure forWinvan’s finishers is the drive-way cutout onsome of their curb and gutter molds.

“We have the driveway cutters on our high-back molds and they cut out all of the concrete,which means a lot less work for our guysworking behind the machine,” Alves said. “Allthey have to do is throw in a board behind it,finish the driveway, and in less than 10 minutes,the driveway is done. We’re saving a lot onconcrete and time.”

It’s time well-saved, so Winvan can bring in their low-boy trailer, load up theirCommander III and head to their next project.

Trimming and Pouring Eight Feet

Tschiggfrie Excavating recently added a new three-track Commander III to their paving inventory to slipform sidewalk and trails.

Tschiggfrie Excavating in Dubuque, Iowa, hasspecialized in slipformed curb and gutter with GOMACOCommander IIIs for several years. They did some sidewalkand trail projects, but never enough to warrant a slipformpaver. For the last couple of years, they have discussedadding a new three-track Commander III for sidewalk andtrail work and finally in 2006, they purchased a newmachine.

Their first project with their new Commander III wasslipforming a recreational trail for the city of Independence,Iowa. A new 2000 foot (610 m) section of trail wouldconnect the golf course to an inner part of the city by alarge campground. The trail,when finished, will connect to thecity’s school.

The new portion of trail runsright along Highway 150 inIndependence, and Tschiggfriehad a lot of preparation workinvolved with it. The trail alsohad to be tied into an existingbridge and involved moving theCommander III several timesacross the project.

“It wasn’t a high-productivityjob,” David Kluesner, generalsuperintendent for TschiggfrieExcavating, explained. “There

were several radii on the project because the trail had tostay within the city’s easement. There were different thingsthat we had to tie into and several driveways along the trailthat we had to maintain traffic on.”

The new trail was slipformed eight feet (2.4 m) wideand five inches (127 mm) thick. Tschiggfrie trimmed as theyslipformed the project.

“We can trim wider with this Commander III, so wedon’t have to be fine tuning our grade before we pour,”Kluesner said. “We don’t have to fight the grade, we justtrim it as we pour.”

The concrete was a basic state of Iowa mix design withan average slump of 1.5 inch (38 mm). Finishing work wasminimal and expansion jointswere cut in every 30 feet (9.1 m).

After just a few sidewalkprojects, Tschiggfrie is alreadyseeing the benefits of having aCommander III with a sidewalkmold.

“As a company, we alwaysdid sidewalk and trails, but wedid them by forming them upand hand-pouring them,”Kluesner said. “We have a littleniche on the market with ourCommander III and we have a

machine we can set up, slipform the sidewalk or trail, andbe more competitive because of it.

“It also makes us more efficient. I would say we cut thetime in half with the Commander III versus handforming.”

Tschiggfrie Excavating is also experiencing otheradvantages with their Commander III and slipforming curband gutter. They were involved on a project in Central City,Iowa, slipforming approximately 4800 feet (1463 m) of curband gutter on Marion Street, which was old Highway 13 intown. Their work on the project, which included the 3.5 foot (1.1 m) wide, six inch (152 mm) thick stand-upcurb, won them a 2006 Excellence in Concrete Award fromthe Iowa Ready Mixed ConcreteAssociation. They won the “Streetand Intersections (<5,000 squareyards)” category.

Features on their newCommander III make it an idealcurb and gutter machine. Theside-shifting mold andtrimmerhead allows Tschiggfrie topave right up to existing curb andgutter and stay on the stringlineas they move by objects. Trackpads keep the tracks frommarring the pavement surface asthe Commander III is driven fromwork site to work site.

“The side-shifting mold lets us slide it in or out whenwe get to an intake or something like it,” Kluesnerexplained. “We don’t have to pick up and move off-linearound the obstacle. By staying on-line, we save a lot of time.

“Then we also have the pads on our tracks and thoseare a big plus. We’ll go into a town and work on a 10-blockarea, but the work might not be all in the same area. We’llhave to track the Commander III to the different areas, andwith the track pads, we don’t have to worry about the kindof street we’re on or breaking or chipping up the street. It’sa big plus.”

Tschiggfrie Excavating islooking forward to moresidewalk and curb and gutterwork for their Commander III...maybe even another pavingaward in 2007.

Invitational lastSeptember had a little

wind, a little sunshine, a lot of fun,and a contractor named Garcia, whostole the show by being the first everto sink the $5,000 Putt and, later thatday, nailed another putt to win the“Grand” Champion title for his teamfrom Odebolt! The $5,000 Puttcompetition, which is sponsored bygolf entertainer Buddy Shelton,started in 1999, and this is the firstyear the prize has been won! DennisGarcia of WMC Contracting Companyin Trenton, Tennessee, made the 50-foot putt look easy. The long putt wasearly Wednesday morning, and by theend of the same day, Garcia was also amember of the Odebolt ScrambleTournament champion team and theoverall 2006 “Grand” Champion team.

Golfing events began Tuesdayafternoon when 256 golfers put theirputting skills to the test on fourgreens at the Ida Grove course. Thewinners from each green advanced tothe finals on the #9 green to putt offfor the championship. This year’schampions were Bob Norris of L.G.Roloff Construction and Richard Cripeof Gohmann Asphalt andConstruction, Inc. Coming in secondwas Bob Newman of Road Machineryand Supplies Company and MikeLeinbaugh of GOMACO. Each of the four championshipteams met at the Ida Grove course for athree-hole play-off. The ScrambleTournament “Grand” Champion Play-Off ended as the day started, withDennis Garcia sinking the winning puttand the Odebolt team claiming the titleof “Grand” champions.

Wednesday’s activities concludedwith the tournament banquet dinnerand an award’s ceremony for the day’swinners.

New Directors for a PowerfulNew Direction in 2007

Gary Godbersen, President and CEO ofGOMACO Corporation, announced that GOMACO’sfocus in 2007 will be continued quality in every facetof our operation. Godbersen has started the new yearwith announcing three new appointments that areeffective immediately at GOMACO.

Grant Godbersen accepts a position as acorporate officer with the new title of Vice Presidentof Manufacturing. Grant has worked in variousdepartments within the company, includingmanufacturing, field service, marketing, productioncontrol and was named plant manager in 1994. Hisnew position will include oversight of allmanufacturing operations, expansion ofmanufacturing capabilities and facilities, the settingof product delivery goals, and the support of newstandards for quality.

Kevin Klein will also take a position as acorporate officer with the new title of Vice Presidentof Research and Development. Kevin has been in theresearch and development department since 1984and was named department manager in 1989. Kevinhas provided the leadership and guidance for theadvancement of electronics and micro processorcontrols in our equipment. He has become aspokesman for our company and the concreteindustry in the utilization of new technology. Kevinwill ultimately be responsible for the direction ofresearch into the feasibility of new products andmarkets for GOMACO and streamlining the processof bringing new concepts and products to themarketplace.

Dan Soellner has accepted the position ofGeneral Manager of Manufacturing for GOMACOand Bobalee Hydraulics in Laurens, Iowa. Dan hasbeen with GOMACO for eight years and has beeninstrumental in implementing the procedures andachieving ISO 9000 certification for Bobalee. His newposition will be responsible for day-to-dayoperations of the manufacturing facilities and allmanufacturing personnel.

“We have experienced back-to-back years ofextraordinary sales and production,” KentGodbersen, Vice President of Worldwide Sales andMarketing explained. “We have a lot of new ideasand product innovations on the drawing board andthis is the first step in plotting our course forcontinued growth of the corporation and stayingcompetitive with our product line.”

Bauma 2007 promises to be an exciting show forGOMACO. We’ll be introducing the new GT-3400internationally for the first time and will have two of thenew machines in our stand to showcase its right-side andleft-side slipforming capabilities. The H&R Motorsports racing team was recentlycrowned the National Mustang Racing Association’s(NMRA) Pro 5.0 World Champions in theDiabloSport PRO 5.0 division for the 2006 season.Jeff Rasmussen, a former GOMACO districtmanager and now Godbersen Equipment Company(GEC) manager, is the manager for thechampionship team. Other H&R Motorsports teammembers include Driver Michael Hauf and CrewChief John Hauf.

Rasmussen and his team compete in 1/4 mile(0.4 km) drag racing with a 2004 Ford Mustang,equipped with a 1700 hp (1268 kW) Hauf/Kasse,814 cubic inch Hemi engine, CS3 Lenco LibertyGears Extreme transmission and a Ram eight inch(203 mm) Pro Billet clutch. This is the third yearthey’ve competed with their 2004 Mustang in thedivision. In their first two years of racing, theyplaced second overall, and this year unseated athree-time champion to win the 2006 championship.

Their races and placings for the year in the PRO5.0 division included: Runner-up in Bradenton,Florida, on March 12; winner in Reynolds, Georgia,on April 2; semi-finals in Reading, Pennsylvania, onJune 18; semi-finals in Martin, Michigan, on July 9;runner-up in Joliet, Illinois, on July 30; semi-finalsin Atco, New Jersey, on August 3; runner-up inColumbus, Ohio, on September 3; and runner-up inBowling Green, Kentucky, on October 1.

Their fastest time for the year was at the World Ford Challenge 9 in St. Louis, Missouri, at6.50 seconds at 213 mph. They set their division’sNMRA speed record three different times during theyear, at 6.64, 6.63 and 6.59 seconds.
