Aetna Voices of Health Legacy In April 2011, Aetna announced a contribution of $1,275,000 to the building of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial in We created the national competition to recognize local agencies that are working in their communities to encourage racial and ethnic equality in health care. In 2018 we re-designed the program to focus on organizations addressing social determinants of health in local communities.

Voices of Health •  Aetna’s vision of empowering people to lead healthier lives includes

supporting organizations that are making an impact on the health of their communities.

•  The Voices of Health program by Aetna is a competition that celebrates

local non-profit organizations who are working to address social determinants of health in their local communities.

2019 Overview •  We will award you $1,000 to celebrate your work to address social

determinants of health in your community. •  5 non-profit organizations from your community are selected as

finalists. (NYC has 10 non-profit finalists)* •  Based on the number of votes, one grand prize winner from each

community will be identified and receive $20,000. (NYC has an additional $10,000 second grand prize)

•  Throughout the competition we may announce “surprise” opportunities to earn additional grants.

Nomination Gathering Information Promotion and Voting

You were selected by Aetna leaders as a finalist among over 500 nominations across the nation! 5 local non-profits are selected as finalist in each community. (10 non-profits in NYC)* 20 individual competitions across the country are being held.

These non-profit finalist then prepare their stories to be showcased on AetnaVoicesofHealth.com A webpage is developed for each organization. The webpage will include: §  A 1 minute video §  An “About Us” section §  Contact information Page content will be supplied by participants.

The campaign will be promoted jointly between Aetna and Participants. Aetna will use national PR channels and social media to promote awareness & voting. Participants will use their local networks to promote awareness and voting.

When promoting your participation….

•  Be creative in your outreach, your creativity will make an impact and impression

•  Collaborate with your partners, have them promote your participation in the program

When creating the video content do....

§  Consider accessibility when writing a script §  Follow accessibility practices in direction and filming:

ü Use only high contrast colors ü Do not convey information using color alone ü Do not use patterned backgrounds etc. ü Do not include any flashing or flickering content ü  Avoid text in lower 1/5 of page where captions to be

displayed

§  Limit actual text in the video if possible §  Save script and edits to be used for the transcript

Transcript example: Video Transcript Title: “Bruce and David talk about refreshable Braille” Bruce Maguire: I’m Bruce Maguire. I’ve been using Braille all my life as a blind person and when I use the internet and computers generally I prefer to work in Braille. Mainly because it gives me a greater sense of engagement with the text and the content, I can reflect on it, I can re-read it as much as I want and I can put my own interpretation on what I am reading rather than having a synthetic voice or even a human voice do it for me. I also have a hearing impairment so it is easier for me to use Braille rather than synthetic speech. In this little demonstration today I will turn the synthetic speech of my screen reader on so that you can hear what I am doing as I navigate around the page. [Shot of refreshable braille device] David Bannor: I’m David Bannor. The refreshable Braille display, at the heart of it is essentially a lot of pins that move up and down to form the Braille characters in response to the impulses the computer sends them based on what’s on the computer screen. Creating Your Video Your video must be exactly one minute, if it is longer than 60 seconds we will ask you to shorten it. Your video is your chance to get creative- it can highlight your organization’s mission or programs and should make the case why your organization deserves to win. The video may be filmed with any equipment you have access to. The addition of picture stills, existing video footage, audio, graphics etc. is permitted as long as you own the rights to the corresponding assets. Once completed, save to a computer hard drive for editing using the editing software of your choice. When you are satisfied with your video save it to a computer hard drive and access YouTube for uploading.

Uploading Your Video Instructions for setting up a You Tube account (if needed) are located at Youtube.com The title of your video should read, Aetna Voices of Health 2019 – [your organization name]. Ensure you have selected “Unlisted” as the privacy setting. Be sure to provide a transcript, subtitles and closed captions for all videos. Once completed, upload the video link as part of your Voices of Health submission to our content management system.
