Voices publication consists of second year Graphic Arts students work from the Graphic Design pathway project, ‘Making the Voice Visual’. While displaying the students work, their development and processes are also included as part of the content. The student were given a choice between three speakers that they could pick from to base the project on. Therefore there are three sections, one for each speaker. The brief involved three different sections and therefore most students produced three pieces of work.

MAKING THE VOICE VISUAL

Students were given a choice out of three very specific speeches which all had very recognisable timbre, and spoken mannerisms. The brief asked students to find a typographical equivalents to each factor of how one of the speaker speaks and incorporate it into a poster using the dialogue from that speech. Only one typeface was allowed to be used and no images of any sort. The speakers were; Hal’s final dialogue from Kubrik’s 2001: A Space Odyssey; Philosopher Bertrand Russell giving a message to our descendants and an unknown west indian women’s speech in the face of rioters in Hackney.

1.11.2

For the second part of the brief students were asked to alter the first piece of work that they created so that the message is delivered by another speaker and how they would say it differently. Hal’s new speaker was Stacey Solomon.Bertrand Russell’s new speaker was Travis Bickle (from the film Taxi Driver) The unknown west indian woman’s new speaker was David Cameron.

1.3For this part of the brief students were given two options. Option 1 was to present the text graphically in a print format of the students choice. This time they were allowed to use more than one font but still no images of any kind.Option 2 was to create a short animation or film which uses a timeline to enhance the graphic representation of the voice of the new speaker. Again ot using any images but any font combination.

What did you think of the briefs?I tend to struggle a bit with layout and type, so I found them quite difficult.

Which piece of your work would you say was your strongest piece and why?The last one. I think its the most interesting.

Which piece did you enjoy doing the most and why? They all found their own way to be stressful, and the last one was probably the worse, but I think I enjoyed that one the most.

What do you now think of the final outcomes? The Hal one still need fixing. The

2nd part isn’t something I’d put on my wall but I’m happy with it as a response to the brief I’m happy with the 3rd part but it was hell to get to.

Is there anything now that you would change or do different? The placement of text on the Hal poster

How well did you research the subjects?mmm, not as much as I have done previously

Is there anything specific that influenced your development or the final outcomes?Just the briefs themselves

What were your ideas? Were there any idea that your were unable to carry out?Yes, I was unable to produce twelve and a half meters of paper cut type and a time lapse of it.

Did you carry out any experiments before producing the final outcome?I tried many experiments.

What skills and processes did you use?Indesign, Photoshop, Photography.

What did you learn from the project? Did you learn anything new?I learnt to be more realistic.

What were the least successful aspects of your work?

The placement of text on the Hal poster and the twelve and a half meters of type.

How well did you manage your time throughout the three projects?mmm. so so.

How did you find the group crits? What did you think of the comments made about your work? They were worthwhile, though some ideas would be worth hearing before you print off the final thing.

What do you think of the studio culture? How well did you engage in it?I need to leave this room!

9JENNY STUTTARD - Stacey Solomon 2JENNY STUTTARD - Stacey Solomon 2

What did you think of other students work and the general standard of the work produced? Some really good original ideas.

What was the most challenging part of the brief for you?Settling in a final idea.

How did you find being limited to only one font and no images? How did you decide on an appropriate font?Didn’t really mind it.

How would you describe your work in one word?Stressful.

Has colour played an important role in your final design? With the Hal piece, I used white for the stark emptiness and red and black for the text just because it fits the character Hal really. For Stacey Solomon I have used pink because, well what other colour could you use!

How did you work develop over the three projects?Hal was hard, Stacey wasn’t as bad, but still quite hard. Stacey 2 was... horrible, but I eventually had a light bulb moment and did it all in one day.

What did you think of the briefs?I thought they were interesting and opened my eyes to new subjects. I thought Bertrand Russel was really interesting subject to look into.

Which piece of your work would you say was your strongest piece and why?I prefer my book as a final piece, I thought it was strongest as it rounded up my final project and showed the voice well.

Which piece did you enjoy doing the most and why?I enjoyed doing the book the most as I had never created a concertina book before so it was good to experiment.

Is there anything now that you would change or do different?I might have experimented with my ideas further and come up with a less constrained idea. I would have thought of something that was less predictable.

How well did you research the subjects?I think I researched my subjects well and really enjoyed it, they were both relatively new subjects matters to me so I was interested to learn more.

What were your ideas? Were there any idea that your were unable to carry out?

I would have preferred to experiment more with book making and making a larger concertina book.

What skills and processes did you use?I learnt how to produce a concertina book which I had never put into action before.

What were the least successful aspects of the you work?I think my posters could have worked better with some more development. I would have played around with their layouts more.

How did you find the group crits? What did you think of the comments

made about your work?I think they went well, feedback wasn’t always positive but I learnt from it and developed my work in different ways.

What did you think of other students work and the general standard of the work produced?I think the work is all of a very high standard and it’s nice to see work being put up on the walls.

How did you find being limited to only one font and no images? At first I found it really challenging but once I found a font I was happy with I thought it was a really good way to focus on the words.

the brief

‘My favourite part was the book it was fun to put togetherand design it.’

My favourite part was the book

favourite

What did you think of the briefs?I thought that they were challenging at the time but they were a good exercise in typesetting.

Which piece of your work would you say was your strongest piece and why?Probably my book because it was a step up from my posters, it presented me with more challenges and deconstructed the

text more.Which piece did you enjoy doing the most and why?I enjoyed the book the most, in parts. It was fun to put it together and design it. However the printing was not fun.

What do you now think of the final outcomes?Generally I am really pleased with them.

Is there anything now that you would change or do different?I’d like to have french folded my book. I think it would have given it more weight and got rid of the problem of being able to see the text through the cut out brackets. Also I would have explored different bindings.

How well did you research the subjects? Not as well as I could have done..

Is there anything specific that influenced your development or the final outcomes?Well, the speakers mainly.

What were your ideas? Were there any idea that your were unable to carry out?Not really. Although my book needs to be printed on a better stock.

Did you carry out any experiments before producing the final outcome?various mock ups for the posters and the book.

What skills and processes did you use?I used Indesign and the staple machine.

What did you learn from the project? Did you learn anything new?I learnt that the printers hate black ink.

What were the least successful aspects of the you work?Back stock for the book. Also there is a lack a documentation in my sketchbook of my work.

How well did you manage your time?Alright.. although I didn’t feel I had that much time for experimentation in some parts. Or rather I spent all my time experimenting/trying to think of

an idea so much that I didn’t have much time to develop my final piece.

How did you find the group crits? What did you think of the comments made about your work?Helpful yet awkward. I don’t remember much of the comments now but i remember them being constructive.

What do you think of the studio culture? How well did you engage in it?I think it’s all coming together now.

What did you think of other students work and the general standard of the work produced?Generally I think everyones work had impressive parts to it. I was quite jealous of a lot of it!

What was the most challenging part of the brief for you?The second part was hard because I couldn’t really think of an idea but I think the third part was more challenging when it came to translating the information from my poster over several pages in the book.

How did you find being limited to only one font and no images? How did you decide on an appropriate font?I didn’t really mind. I quite enjoyed it actually, it pushed me more.

What influenced your work?Rationalised space, grids, parallelograms, brackets.

How did you go about choosing your fonts? For the first part I used Franklin Gothic. I chose this font because it was quite neutral and fitted well with Bertrand. I was a toss up between this and Akzidenz Grotesk but Franklin gothic had a nicer lowercase and curly brackets.

Page 14: Response to 1.1- Bertrand Russell, A2 Poster.Below: Response to 1.2- Travis Bickle, A2 Poster.

Right: Response to 1.3- Travis Bickle, Book.

21

For Travis Bickle I chose Akzidenz Grotesk condensed italic because it had an edginess I wanted to portray. The italics hinted at speed.

What influenced your layout design?A basic grid that rationalised the space around the type. Alignments and parallelograms controlled everything in the Travis Bickle part.

Has colour played an important role in your final design? For the Bertrand Russell part, I chose black and white because it was typically minimal. I wanted the words/ typeface to speak, not the colour. For the next two parts I chose yellow because it seems appropriate for the film Taxi Driver. It did seem obvious but I think it

was more necessary than anything else.

How did your work develop over the three projects?I focused more on how I’d deconstructed the text and used that to drive the design throughout. the three projects.

What did you think of the briefs?I thought they were challenging.

Which is strongest piece and why?I find it hard to judge my own work.

Which piece did you enjoy doing the most and why?I enjoyed the final part the most where I had to project type onto boxes in the photo studio, I really enjoyed this process.

What do you now think of the final outcomes?I thought they were alright.

Is there anything now that you would change or do different?Plenty, I always have different ideas.

How well did you research the subjects?check my tumblr..Is there anything specific that influenced your development or the final outcomes?I was influenced by a Stefan Sagmeister piece for Levi which is what I based my final piece on. Also minimalist design that I had researched.

Did you carry out any experiments before producing the final outcome? If so what are they?I practiced the box layouts at home before bringing them into uni and doing it for real.

What skills and processes did you use?I used Indesign, Illustrator, Photography and Photoshop.

What were the least successful aspects of the you work? The least successful parts was converting work unto David Cameron. How well did you manage your time? Not very well..

How did you find the group crits? What did you think of the comments made about your work?Helpful and informative.

What did you think of other students work?I thought there was high quality work from all students.

What was the most challenging part of the brief for you?I thought coming up with an idea was challenging and then producing your idea as a successful piece.

How did you find being limited to only one font and no images? How did you decide on an appropriate font?I found it challenging but it was do able. I used font mind maps to choose my fonts. How would you describe your work in one word?ongoing.

What influenced your layout design for the three projects?I just experimented with the fonts and design till I produces something the fit best on the page.

Has colour played an important role in your final design?I used dark colours for the speech due to the situation in the video.

What were your weak points?I criticise my work all the time and never feel satisfied.

How did your work develop over the three projects? It developed by looking at the original video and looking into different aspects of it.
