The ceremonial inaugural Mass Sept. 3 climaxed a week of meeting and private colloquies for the man whose election as pope on Aug. 26 came as a complete surprise to Vatican-watchers and who has already said many times that he never expected to be chosen. The new pope's pon- tificate quickly took on the marks of simplicity which had characterized that of Pope Paul VI and humanness which was Pope John XXIII's hallmark. At the solemn Mass Pope John Paul chose to be sym- bolically invested with papal power through the imposition of the pallium—a simple^ strip of white cloth with black crosses —and not by a coronation with the papal tiara. He thus broke with many hundreds of years of papal tradition. ALSO MISSING from the solemn, lengthy rites were the papal portable throne and the triple admonition, "Thus passes the glory of the world." In their place the new pope chose to highlight the ceremony by praying silently and alone at the tomb of St. Peter before walking out of the crowds. After the imposition of the pallium the pontiff received a formal sign of obedience from each cardinal. But even that gesture turned into a fraternal exchange as the new pope smiled, kissed and spoke with each cardinal. The smiling face and friendly way of the former patriarch of Venice dominated earlier meetings as well that first week. Right after his election Aug. 26, it was the smile on his face that most struck the crowds in St. Peter's Square and millions around the world who saw the new pope's first appearance on their television sets. The next day he thrilled those in the square when, coming out on the balcony for the Sunday Angelus, he abandoned the usual formal greeting to the crowd and spoke informally, telling amusing anecdotes about himself and explaining the name he had chosen. "I don't have the wisdom of heart that Pope John had," he commented. "Nor do I have the preparation and education of Pope Paul VI. But I have their job, and I must seek to serve the church." On Wednesday, Aug. 30, the new pope started Vatican officials by tossing away the formal talk prepared by Vatican speechwriters for his meeting with the College of Cardinals. In an off-the-cuff speech, the pope pleaded: "The world must see us united." Walsh Sunday, Sept. 3, 1978, 3 p.m. I find myself, a priest from Miami, Florida, sitting in the Piazza of St. Peter's, Rome. The huge Piazza is almost three-quarters full and there is still three hours to go before the ceremony begins. I had a ticket, but the ushers have long since given up and it is every man for himself now. 5:15 p.m. : the hot sun is sinking below the great dome of St. Peter's A police helicopter hovers over the some two hundred thousand people from every race and nation. The Catholic world had come to greet Peter in the person of John Paul I, its new Supreme Pastor. People have been gathering here since early morning, simple people, humble people, working people, the Pope's own people. Nearby is a young Italian couple with a newborn baby. In front of me is a U.S. Navy family from Naples (Italy, that is, not Florida). Ten-year- old Michael tells me that he was born in Pensacola and that he has been to Rome dozens of times. Like everyone else here he has come to greet the new Pope, but he also wants to know how the Dolphins are doing. There is a special spirit in the air—a sort of ex- pectation based on hope and love. The people wait patiently, in good humor, in festive mood. They seem to feel at home. John Paul is one of themselves. The other night Italian television asked a little girl in the Piazza what she thought of the new Pope. Her reply was very special—"He talks like one of us." The worst offenders are the little Italian nuns, thousands of them, who seek to make up for their lack of height by standing on their chairs. The sun has disap- peared behind the basilica and we are all grateful for its shadow and the cool breeze which it brings. Knowing smiles break the language barriers. According to Vatican radio, the Pope is now on his way to pray at the tomb of St. Peter. 6 p.m.: the bells ring out and the procession appears at the door of St. Peter's the College of Cardinals two by two and finally the Holy- Father. PITTSBURGH-To theCatholic writer and socialactivist, Dorothy Day, whomade the six-day silentretreats more, than 20 timesover the years, the experienceremained a "foretaste ofheaven." The retreats, titled"An Encounter WithSilence," were begun in theearly 1940s by Father John J.Hugo and were offeredthrough the 1960s. On Friday, Sept. 1, PopeJohn Paul held a relaxedmeeting with nearly 1,000journalists from around theworld on hand for the conclaveand related events.

He asked them to view

church matters from thechurch's perspective and totry to get to the heart of bigstories instead of becomingoverly concerned with juicydetails.

Several times he jokinglydeparted from his text to tellamusing stories whichgraphically illustrated hispoints.

If St. Paul were alivetoday, the new pontiffquipped, he would go to to thebig television networks likeNBC to ask for air time.

He is speaking theirlanguage. By now it is alreadydark, I have lost track of time.The long wait, the hot sun, allis forgotten. The Piazza isbright with flood-lights, asPope John Paul I gives hisblessing. Slowly, it wouldappear, reluctantly, the HolyFather turns to enter St.Peter's and equally slowly andreluctantly the crowd leavesthe Piazza. So it was on thefirst day of Pope John Paul'sministry as Supreme Pastor.

The day before, the popemet the diplomatic corpsaccredited to the Holy See.Perhaps it was the at-mosphere, or the fact that hewas speaking in French. Butduring that meeting thepontiff stayed with his text. Itexplained that the Holy See isinterested in forming con-sciences on the internationallevel and not in becominginvolved in purely economic orstrictly political issues.

IN OFFICIAL decisionsin his first week, the popereappointed Cardinal Jean

Villot as papal secretary ofstate. Cardinal Villot wasexpected to stay in the postfor only a few years, at hisown request.

The pontiff also reap-pointed all heads of theRoman Curia for the durationof their five-year terms.

He also officallyreconfirmed the dates and theofficers for the Third GeneralAssembly of the LatinAmerican Bishops, to be heldthis October in Puebla,Mexico.

But he announced that he

would not be able to attendthe important church con-ference because of com-mitments at the start of hisreign which could not be putoff.

In private meetings, thepope saw 40 relatives on theday before his coronation.

He also met with severalleading non-Catholic Church-men, including the Rev.Philip Potter, World Councilof Churches general secretary,and the delegations from otherchurches in Rome for hieinaugural Mass.

The statue of Our Lady of Charity above the altar in the Shrine awaits tonight'sceremonies.

Thousands expectedat Stadium Mass

Thousands of Latins, aswell as some Anglos, willagain throng to the MiamiMarine Stadium tonight(Friday) for the annualcelebration of the Feast of OurLady of Charity, Patroness ofCuba.

The celebration willfeature the traditional flotillaacompanying the statue ofOur Lady born acrossBiscayne Bay from the CubanShrine in her honor, aprocession into the stadium,Mass concelebrated by Arch-bishop Edward A. Mc-Carthy and all priests whowish to participate—and

possibly a fireworks displaybased on Archdiocese HolyYear themes.

The celebration honoringthe Cuban Patroness also tiesin with the Feast of theNativity of the Blessed Virginas well as the anniversary ofthe first Mass offered in theUnited States in 1565 at St.Augustine. All three eventsfall on Sept. 8.

On the same date in 1961the late Archbishop ColemanF. Carroll celebrated for thefirst time in Miami an outdoorMass in honor of Our Lady ofCharity at the MarineStadium. Thousands of newly

arrived Cuban refugeesparticipated.

Present at that Mass wasan image of Our Lady thathad been brought to Miamithat same day by tworefugees. Since then the Masshas become an annual eventwhich Archbishop McCarthyhas continued.

This year, the Arch-bishop has tied the Mass inwith the Archdiocesan HolyYear and is also invitingAnglos to join.

The statue of Our Lady,born across Biscayne Bayfrom the Shrine, will arrive atthe Marine Stadium at 7:30p.m. and Mass will follow.

"When we speak inmillions," Monsignor added,"the picture tends to cloud.The problems loom to large tobe solvable or even treatable.But the Mission Church neverlooks at millions; it looks withthe eyes and compassion ofChrist at one hungry child,one jobless father, one elderly

and lonely widow. Theynumber in the millions, to besure, "Father continued, "butthe invitation to Christ isextended with individual loveand concern.

What Catholic education is all aboutThis is the time when students return for the

start of a" new school year, and it is opportune torestate some views on what Catholic Education isall about.

What does it stand for? It obviously includesthe material elements of human formation. But,its basis is primarily the education of the soul.Any system of education that excludes God, thatexcludes the spiritual life, is on very weakgrounds. We should not have to prove this to theaverage parent—they have only got to lookaround and see the world, our world, to un-derstand the problem fully. This is where CatholicSchools become important because they attemptto mold students to grow as mature Christians,facing the contradictions of life, becoming wit-nesses to the Truth.

Here we are reminded of Pilate's question:What is truth? We wisely speak of dementedpeople as "out of touch." To varying degreesneurotic and other immature persons are likewise"out of touch." Out of touch with what? Surelynot with the material universe, for feuch peoplecan grip a dollar bill, or clutch a baseball bat, orhold a book, or shake hands, or seize a Coke glassjust as tangibly as anyone else. With what thenare they out of touch? The answer is: with truth,particularly the truth about themselves. Eitherthey do not see the truth or they are hostily afraidof it. Which resurrects Pilate's question.

Truth always involved items and it involvesa harmony between them. Furthermore,, in eachtype of truth one of these two items is a knowing,perceiving mind. Thus moral truth exists when aman's tongue speaks" in harmony with what hismind knows. You may be speaking inaccuratelyor mistakenly, but you will not bear false witnessas long as your speech reflects your knowledge.

If, however, we are to speak accurately, a

deeper kind of truth must first exist,psychological or perhaps ontological truth. Theremust be a harmony between one's mind itself andthe facts, between one's thoughts and objectiblereality. Our minds are like living mirrors createdto reflect truth, or like soft wax. meant to beenrichingly stamped by the signet ring of reality.However, this reality must always be in accordwith what God wants.

Hut what makes reality itself true, so that weprize a true friend or a true diamond, or a true lawof physics, so that false teeth are not teeth at all?This question leads us to a third and an evendeeper kind of truth, the truth of things inthemselves (metaphysical truth.) With respect tothis third kind of truth, we rightly ask where isthe second item, the perceiving mind, whoseharmony with something else is supposed to bethe essence of all truth?

The answer is of vast consequence to theChristian, for the answer is none other than themind of God. God is the Supreme IntelligenceWho thinks things into existence. Things are truebecause and to the extent that they are in har-mony with the Divine Mind. Since this is so, St.Thomas Aquinas could acutely remark that withrespect to God, things exist because He knowsthem: but with respect to ourselves, we knowthings because they exist.

Our commitment is to truth at all theselevels: not just to veracity in expressing ideas—to make our words correspond with our thoughts;not just to scientific investigation —in order thatour thoughts will correspond to outside reality,but also to that wisdom that strives to makeoutside reality correspond to God's idea of what itshould be.

It is the truth which makes us free, whichliberates us from our immaturity, which activates

the root possibilities in our personalities. It is ourcontact with truth which nourishes us intomaturity. It is this contact which qualifies us as"being in touch." But this contact must penetrateinto our emotions and will-power as well as intoour minds. We must pursue the truth, the wholetruth, and absorb it with our whole heart andmind and strength.

This is where the main value lies in thesesteps taken on the road to Catholic education andformation. And here we would caution against thetrite phrase: "The youth today are the men or theleaders of tomorrow." The realities of manhood orqualities of leadership are not so much inheritedas earned. They have to be earned in l i fe-nurtured through a deep abiding love of God.There's no other way.

The emphasis on Christian education hasgreat significance because there are people todaywho wish to divorce education from the religioustraditions of the past. They are men whoseworship is confined to mankind and itsachievements. They have infiltrated schoolcorridors with secularism and pagan ideals. Blindchance rather than Revelation seems to be theirlodestar. They deride the religious conception ofeducation, arguing that it is outmoded and thatwe should bow to the developments of scientificand psychological techniques. But we knowdifferent. It was never more eloquently put thanby Pope Pius XI some 35 years ago when he said:

"The true Christian, product of Christianeducation, is the supernatural man who thinks,judges, and acts constantly and consistently inaccordance with right reason, illuminated by thesupernatural light of the example and teaching ofChrist; in other words, to use the current term,the true and finished man of character."

Letters to the EditorPro-lifers disagree

on rhetoric chargeRhetoric is a term heard

frequently in the abortion con-troversy, and one would expect aCatholic newspaper to use thatparticular term with reference tothe semantic gymnastics of theabortionists who attempt tosugar-coat what an abortionactually is. Terms like "productsof conception" and "post-conceptive family planning" areclearly rhetoric.

However, the Voice haschosen to apply that accusatoryexpression to the educationalefforts of pro-lifers! Our com-parisons to murderers, to theNazi extermination camps, andto the Dred Scott decision areabsolute parallels—not rhetoric.What else can you call adeliberate attack on the life on aninnocent child, except murder?What else can you call that totaldisregard for the life that existsin the womb, except that same

brand of contempt that Hitler hadfor those human beings he con-sidered non-persons?

How can we refrain frombeing judgmental of abortionists?Would you be able to accompanyone of these so-called physiciansinto surgery, stand by as he in-serts a knife into the womb of apregnant woman and piece bypiece dismembers her unbornchild? Could you watch as hemakes an incision on anotherwoman, lifts out her living baby,and sends it off to the lab as a"specimen" for analysis insteadof to the nursery for care? Couldyou really view the uglymassacre of one of God'screations, ignore the FifthCommandment, and do thiswithout "judging the personalintegrity of the practitioners ofabortion"?

When abortions are occuringat the rate of over one millionbabies a year, I find it truly in-credible that pro-lifers should beasked to extend their concern to"working for a more just

economic order in the world,"etc. We hear enough of this fromthe pro-abortionists who would bedelighted to have our efforts sodiluted. Fighting abortion is along, hard, often discouraging,and time-consuming battle. Mostpro-lifers (unlike those who haveaborted inconvenient children)have families to care for, and onemajor issue is all we can handleeffectively.

I have always recommendedreading the Voice as a source ofpro-life information andeducation, thanks to DickConklin's column and the generalnews coverage of this issue. Untilthere is a reversal, however, ofthe "let's not be too harsh on theabortionists" attitude conveyedin the August 25 editorial, I willbe unable to continue promotingthe Voice. Editorials definingpro-life philosophies as"rhetoric" can be found in theMiami Herald.

rights to women. In reply, I wouldwarn that the trouble with ERA isthat it is not yet the law of theland.

True, most of the Amend-ments took time while injustice tohuman beings was permitted toexist even under the Constitution.Amendment XIII was not ratifieduntil 1865—the Amendment thatfinally abolished slavery. GoodAmericans had argued for andjustified slavery until it wasformally ended by an Amend-ment. Amendment XIX was notratified until 1920, and the samearguments to prevent womenfrom having "the vote" are beingused today to prevent equalitybefore the law.

As a self-supporting widow,the mother of grow daughters, Ibelieve that all human beingsshould be treated with justice. Asmy own mother stood out forwoman suffrage, I hope to equalher courage and commitment bygoing on record as urging theFlorida legislature to ratify ERA.

Papacy has survivedonslaught of history

Everything seemed so quiet, dignified andorderly this past week as the College of Cardinalsshut themselves in the Vatican to elect a new popethat one finds it hard to believe it was not alwayslike this in past papal elections.

On the contrary, picking your way throughhistory at random in a dozen centuries, youmarvel that one more successor to Peter waselected when it seemed the Church had surelycome to the end of the line.

It seemed that the pattern of defeat andvictory was set forever on Calvary when theenemies of Jesus gleefully shook their bloody fistsin triumph and thought it was all over.

Later when Peter hung upside down on hiscross, there was every reason to think that thestubborn, troublesome, leadership of the fanaticChristian was finally broken for good.

No one seemed to learn from history afterthat, at least no one among kings and emperorsand willing hatchet men in those first centurieswhen so many of Peter's successors shed theirblood for the faith. It was all over one moment.And it began again the next.

When the barbarians streamed into theRoman Empire and made it their own, non-believers and the weak in faith became strangebedfellows in sharing the presumption that theChair of Peter would remain empty. But there wasLeo standing in the wings. In time he came to beknown as Leo, the Great. As pope he went out inthe open to meet the legendary Attila, and hemanaged to turn him with his hordes away fromRome by the sheer strength of his personality andthe power of his words. Later, just as successfullyhe saved Rome from Gaiseric, the Vandal.

Slowly the Church invaded the invaders andmade them her Christian children. It was all doneunder the guidance of Peter's successor in thatgeneration.

Other menaces threatened the papacyconstantly. The Moslems for 1000 years sat on theborders of Christianity, rattling swords,threatening slaughters. Christian emperors thenbegan forcefully to use papal power as a tool tofurther their own aims.

We read_the incredible story of EmpressTheodora imprisoning Pope Silverius for the restof his life. Now and then, confusion was spredeverywhere in Christendom when two or threemen at the same time claimed to be pope.

Some times the civil powers welcomed thisanomaly and gladly lent support to an antipope,while the true pope was reigning, so that the veryfoundation of the papacy seemed to be shaken.

However, despite all this, the apostolicsuccession of popes continued, and the falseclaimants were recognized and labeled as such inhistory.

There are a few, too, known as the "badpopes", men whose personal ambition and link topolitical powers drove them to seize papal poweror who were weak men and became as putty in thehands of crafty politicians.

Here is where the concept of the papacyshould have been blown to bits. The bad popes, ithas been reasoned, should have destroyed by theirmoral weaknesses what the Roman emperors andother tyrants could not by their wiles andphysical power.

History now reveals that these men haveturned out to be our shame and our glory. Our

shame, because it is sad that ambition and greedcan work their ways into the most sacred ofplaces. Glory, however, because perhaps nothingproves so impressively that the Church is notultimately in the hands of men, but in the keepingof God, as Christ promised.

Seventy seven popes are reckoned saints.Only a very few in that unbroken line can betermed bad. We must remember here that one in12 turned bad in the college of apostles.

Unworthiness among a few popes has oftenbeen interpreted as a sign that the papacy wasabout to disappear. John Fox predicted the endwould come in 1666. Joseph Mede disagreed andcalled for its end earlier, by 1653.

The Calvinist leader, Jurieau, missed his firstguess, 1690, then gave the papacy another 20years, but both he and the pope lived beyond thatdate.

When Pius VI was in chains, Milne tells us,and Rome was possessed by French atheists, itwas widely noised abroad that this indeed was the"final defeat" of the papacy.

And imagine their amazement 300 years laterto find all the world, Catholic and non-Catholicalike, deeply interested in the 262nd successor ofSt. Peter.

Instead of the papacy being buried andforgotten except by students of history, it hasbeen living and thriving in a complex world, thelike of which has never been seen. The Church ofPeter, Linus, Gregory, Clement, John XXXIIIand Paul VI is in every country, among all classeswith three quarters of a billion voices raised in aprofession of faith in the Vicar of Christ on earth.

This has to be God's doing.

Questions on receiving Holy CommunionBy FATHER

Q. In your (July 7)Question Box, you included aresponse cencerning Com-munion under both species.But I believe you misun-derstood the question. Youresponded by explaining whyCommunion under bothspecies is proper and in accordwith the symbolism of theEucharist, as the body andbood of Christ.

I believe the question wasmeant to be: Are peoplepermitted to come to the altarand give themselves Com-munion (by taking the cup)?Or must the priest give it tothem? Would you pleaseexplain? (Ohio).

A. You and a lot of otherscalled my attention to thisfacet of the question, which Iobviously missed.

In all cases, whether it isthe host or the cup that isreceived, the Eucharist shouldbe given to each individual bythe priest or other eucharisticminister. This is the procedureprovided for in the rite forministerin Communion, and itis, even more so, in- accordwith the liturgical dialiguewhich the church was alwaysseen as inherent in giving andreceiving the Eucharist.

Just as the entireeucharist celebration is acommunal worship activity,

involving give and takethrough the sharing andparticipation by everyonepresent, so Holy Communionis a faith-sharing part of thatcelebration. The minister, asone of that community, offersthe Eucharist, and invites the"Amen"—the declaration offaith—from the one who willreceive. The church's presentrite for administering andreceiving Communion isintended to reflect andpreserve that understanding,and make each reception areminder and a new act offaith in who and what we are.

Practices contrary to thisprocedure are not unusualtoday, but they misssomething valuable, and arenot liturgically sound.

Q. Several months ago adear friend and I attended thefuneral of another friend in theCatholic Church. My friend isa Lutheran and .is verydevoted to her church.

At Communion time, thislady went up to receive, andthe priest gave her HolyCommunion. How could shereceive in our Catholic Churchif she is not a Catholic? Ididn't want to question herabout it for fear of hurting herfeelings. (Pa.)

A, According to ourCatholic teaching and un-derstanding of the meaning ofthe Eucharist, she should not,of couse, have received

Communion. In fact, manyLutherans are equally strongin their restrictions abouttheir members' reception ofCommunion in other churches,or about people of other faithsreceiving Communion in theLutheran Church.

Your friend surely didwhat she did in a true spirit offriendship, reverence andChristian faith. Since thesituation is not likely to berepeated, and since thereseems little chance ofmisunderstanding by others, Ibelieve you acted prudently innot attempting to correct her.

The priest, of course, hadno way of knowing she is not aCatholic. Priests usually mustassume that anyone whoapproaches for Holy Com-munion is a practicingCatholic.

Q. Are priests permittedto let the people go around thealtar to take Communion fromthe chalice after receiving theHost? This goes on at ourchurch at daily Mass, but noton Sunday. (Tex.)

A. Not only is it per-mitted but receiving Com-munion under both forms,bread and wine, is alsorecommended by the churchwherever it is practical to doso.

Both practices youmention help in their own wayto express externally the un-ion with Our Lord and witheach other, as his brothers andsisters, which he accomplishesthrough our sharing in the

eucharistic sacrifice and meal.Obviously, being around thealtar together is impossiblewith the larger crowds atSunday Mass, but it can beand is most appropriate withsmaller groups, such as mightbe present in most parishes onweekdays. The experience ofmany proves that sharing inthe Eucharist this way, atleast on occasion, can con-tribute much toward a deeperawareness of the meaning ofthe Mass and how it affectsour relationships with eachother.

The same may be said fordrinking from the chalice aswell as eating the Host. Whileone receives Our Lord in eitherway by itself, receiving underboth form's more perfectlysignifies our response toJesus' command to eat hisflesh and drink his blood, andour prayerful desire for thegifts he promised to those whodo so..

If you haven't alreadyreceived Communion underboth species, I stronglysuggest you take the op-portunity when it is offered,and give yourself whole-heartedly to it at least afew times. My bet is it willtruly help you toward a newappreciation of the Mass.

Q. What is the BlessedVirgin's promise in connectionwith attending Mass on firstFridays? (111.)

A. You must be referringto the practice of HolyCommunion on nine con-

secutive first Fridays, apractice which was (and tosome extent still is) a popularform of devotion in honor ofthe Sacred Heart of Jesus. Itderives from a promisereportedly made by Our Lordin a private revelation to St.Margaret Mary Alacoque in1675, that the grace of finalpenitence at the end of theirlives would be granted tothose who receive HolyCommunion on the firstFridays of nine consecutivemonths.

The practice is, in otherwords, a sort of novena—anine-time prayer whichChristians have used forcenturies as one of the ways ofemphasizing the importanceof perseverance and trust inour prayer to God.

At least one of the majorreasons for the long emphasison the first Friday devotionwas that it counteracted thegross neglect of Holy Com-munion prevalent around thetime of St. Margaret Mary,especially in France, AnnualCommunion, at best, was notuncommon. The weekly, evendaily, Communion which thevast majority of practicingCatholics receive today, wasall but unheard of.

There's no doubt that,through the last three cen-turies, the widespread practiceof first Friday Communionhelped much to improve thatsituation, and to correct thedoctrinal errors about theEucharist on which it wasbased

The Public Ministry of JesusFaith, love and understanding are the key

elements in KNOW YOUR FAITH this week.Without any one of these elements, life is less thansatisfactory. Through the ages, man has sought tofind them. Though man has made marvelousstrides in practical knowledge of the earth and theuniverse, his yearning and search for God is never-ending. The legacy of knowledge beyond thosethings tangible left by generations past is acceptedby some wholly, partially by others, and then thereare those who never accept any part of the legacy.

John the Baptist's legacy was faith. He knewwithin his heart that the reign of God was near. Buthe did not really understand what that reignmeant. He urged people to look seriously atthemselves and search for the goodness within

them. When he met Jesus and baptized him, heknew that this was the man the people were waitingfor. He stepped aside and urged his followers tojoin Jesus. Finally he gave his own life. All thiswithout fully understanding. Today we seek tounderstand everything, yet we know we will neverreach the final pinnacle. We must leave somethings to faith alone.

John the Apostle's legacy was love. UnlikeJohn the Baptist, he knew Jesus intimately. Hesaw and experienced the unlimited love for allmankind that Jesus demonstrated every day of hisministry. That love became the central part ofJohn's life. His observation that the knowledge ofGod and his existence comes mainly through loveremains profound.

Jenny, a modern woman who seemingly hadeverything, was really experiencing a sense ofemptiness until she gave of herself which is whatlove is all about. Giving filled the void within her,and although she did not fully understand why, sheaccepted it. Faith was born through love. Un-derstanding follows little by little.

The center of Christianity is love. Today weare fortunate to experience Christians reaching outto one another as we share our thoughts and try tounderstand one another. The ecumenical movemoAis another development in the history ^JChristianity that seeks to close the division amongus. We hope it will move forward until finally faith,love and understanding will seal all the gaps.

"I keep searching for real happiness.But when I find it, it lasts for such alittle while. I thought resuming my careerwould give me the satisfaction I lacked.Buying something new used to give me alift. I've got a busy social life. I'mmarried to a man I'm in love with and wehave beautiful children. I'm beginning tobe afraid that I'm neurotic."

This was a distraught young woman,indeed, who sat talking me across thekitchen table. I had always thoughtJenny was completely happy. She wasone of those people who had set a goal forherself and forged ahead until shereached it.

FEELING MORE than a littlehelpless, I put the coffee on and en-couraged her to talk. I asked her how shedefined happiness. She thought for amoment and replied, "Happiness ishaving your life well ordered and beingwith the people you really care about.Happiness is having the things you needwithout a lot of worry about how you'regoing to get them. And happiness issuccess with your work. I have all that,but I keep looking for something else —something I can't define." Then anexpression akin to both fear and in-credulousness crossed her face, and shesaid softly, "Unless what I'm looking foris God."

I knew instantly that she had an-swered her own question. At the sametime, it was evident that she was afraid ofher answer.

"From what I know of you, Jenny, Idon't see that you're so far away fromliving a Christian life," I answered.

"Oh yes, I am. I don't put myself outfor other people. For instance, if I wereyou, I wouldn't take the time to listen tothis foolishness I'm spouting off. I'maware that I'm keeping you up. But' Icame over here because I knew you'dlisten. Your listening when it's in-convenient is part of being Christian."

THAT CONVERSATION tookplace some years ago. I thought I hadreasonable answers for Jenny. But wesorted through many things over a periodof several months and she was stilldissatisfied.

She even started going to church forthe first time in her adult life. But shecame away unhappy because she thoughtshe should have some kind of over-powering feeling.

Then something happened thatultimately affected both of us. I had anew baby. And for the first time in mylife, I could not see that joy would ever beon the horizon for me again. My tiny littlegirl was mongoloid. I was on the edge ofdespondency.

In the depths of my soul, I blamedGod and felt that he had failed me. Andworse still, he had failed my child whohad never deserved to come into theworld imperfect.

OUR CLOSE friends knew there wasa grave problem with the baby before Icame from the hospital with her. No onequite knew how to handle it so theystayed away. Everyone except Jenny.Jenny was waiting for our arrival. Shehad a meal prepared and a lovely gift forYvonne.(It wasn't convenient for her; shehad taken the day off from a busy job.)

During those first difficult weeks,she dropped by in the evenings and stoodup under my tears and my moods. Ididn't tell her that I thought God had

abandoned my baby and me, but shesensed my feelings.

One day she said, " You know, I'mpraying for Yvonne and you too." I want-ed to thank her. But I could not. My an-swer was silence. "I know God exists. Istill haven't found him but I don't feelas much emptiness as I once felt."

AS TIME PASSED and Yvonnegrew, the joy within her reached out tome. Life began to be beautiful again.

Yvonne is nine years old now. Jennydropped in to visit us last week andYvonne greeted her with a big hug andkiss and lively conversation. Her greetingwas like warm sunshine.

Later, Jenny said, "By now, Isuppose you know I've finally filled thatvoid in my life. Yvonne came into my life,too. When I knew you needed me, I triedto help by being there because youlistened to me when I needed someone."

"I even thought God had let youdown. And I was aware that you did too,but I couldn 't let you know I agreed withyou. I had never giver quite that much ofmyself to anyone before, and as timewent on, my dissatisfaction with myselfdwindled. As giving became easier, Ibegan to know God. And if I had notlearned that, I never would have foundhim."

AS I SIT HERE thinking about this

part of my life and Jenny's-I realize thatYvonne has brought a very special kind oflove and happiness into my life. But Ihadn't know that she had reached so farbeyond. Who would ever have dreamedthat a child whom everyone thoughtcame with such limited promise wouldbring with her such precious gifts?

The earliest proclamation of thegood news began with the ministry ofJohn the Baptist. It was to him that thefirst recorded words of Jesus in his ownpublic ministry were addressed. Fromliis moment on, until John was executed,

iere was a strange, rather distantlationship between the two.

It is difficult to disengage a clearimage of John from the Gospel portrayalof his personality, expectations, mission.Quite expectedly the early church and theEvangelists interpreted his role andwords in a Christian sense, a sense hehimself would not have understood.

THE PICTURE IS further com-plicated by another important factor: anapparent tension between loyal followersof John (see Acts 19, 1-7) and the firstChristians. One detects an effort on thepart of the Evangelists to keep John in asubordinate role without minimizing hisimportance in the history of salvation.

However, from a careful reading ofall the pertinent texts there emerges theimage of a sombre figure from the longline of stern prophets. John appearssuddenly from the desert with a messageof impending judgment, the long-awaited intervention of God to punishevildoers and establish his kingdom forthe righteous. "Reform your lives! Thereign of God is at hand"(Mt. 3,2). "Evennow the ax is laid to the root of the tree.Everytree that is not fruitful will be cutdown and thrown into the fire...Hiswinnowing-fan is in his hand. He willclear the threshing floor and gather hisgrain into the barn, but the chaff he willburn in unquenchable fire" (Mt. 3,10 ,12).Hence his reference to the activity of theone to follow him as baptizing in a holyspirit and fire, a divine judgment andpurification associated with "the lastdays" in the Old Testament (see Is. 4,4;36,25-26).

WHOM WAS JOHN expecting tocome as the agent of this judgment? Itdoes not seem that he was expecting theMessiah,specifically. Rather, he seems tohave been following a strong Jewishtradition that the prophet Elijah wouldreturn to usher in the final days. Ac-cordingly, when the authorities

questioned him about his identity, hesaid that he was neither the Messiah norElijah (Jn. 1, 20-21).

This may explain why Jesus puzzledhim and why, when he heard about theworks Christ has perfoming, he sent amessage by his disciples to ask him, "Areyou 'He who is to come' or do we look foranother?" (Mt. 11, 2-3). "He who is tocome" was a standard designation forElijah, and Jesus was not acting in theway Elijah was expected to act, bringingfiery judgment on the world. And John'sdescription on the awaited one as rankingahead of him because he existed beforehim would fit Elijah perfectly.

THE EARLY CHURCH interpretedthe role of John in the light of its belief inthe centrality of Jesus as the Messiahand Lord. And so Matthew and Markportray him as an Elijah-like figure,preparing the way of the Lord. WhenJesus asked the crowds why they went tohear John, he asked, "Why did you goout—to see a prophet? A prophet indeed,and something more! It is about this manthat Scripture says 'I send my messenger(Elijah) ahead of you to prepare your waybefore you'...If you are prepared to acceptit, he is Elijah, the one who was certain tocome" (Mt. 11, 9-10,14.

The Gospels record only one per-sonal meeting between Jesus and John,on the occasion of Jesus' coming in all thehumility of his humanity to accept John'sbaptism,an event treated differently, anda bit gingerly, by the differentEvangelists.

EVERY SAINT BRINGS out adifferent quality and value that marksthe total spiritual person. Some presentus with the persuasiveness of prayer, asin the case of Luke. Others inflame us

with the passion of faith, such as Paul. Ina man like Peter we sense the loyalty tocommunity and church. From John wederive the centrality of love in spiritualgrowing.

Where can you find the fundamentalspiritual message of John? Read his firstEpistle, Chapter 4, 7 to 5, 12. Just as thelast words of Christ on the night beforehe died were about love, so these words ofJohn in the evening of his life return tothe same topic. Memories of love crowdthe mind and imagination of John.Ponder his Gospel to review thosememories: The river of wine at Cana, thedivine granary of the loaves miracle, thecure of the man born blind, theresurrection of Lazarus, the conversion ofthe Samaritan woman with an ocean ofliving water, the call to be a ' 'born againperson" in the story of Nicodemus, thehealing of the Centurion's son. Sevensigns of love to forecast the sevencelebrations of love that the churchperforms in sacraments. Seven loveevents that would culminate in thesupreme sign of care—the sign of thecross.

IT IS JOHN'S direct experiences ofChrist's love that form the essence of his

spiritual teaching: "Beloved, let us loveone another, for love is from God. He whodoes not love, does not know God, forGod is love" (1 Jn 4, 7-8). Notice thatJohn says that the knowledge of God andhis existence comes mainly through love.How similar this is to the teaching of thatmost intellectual of all the saints,Thomas Aquinas, who taught that wecome far closer to God through love thanthrough knowledge. Yes, we are to useour minds to find God. But we will be farmore successful by using our hearts.

Each time we perform an act of love,we unlock one more door that hides themystery and wonder of God in our lives.Hence we should not be afraid to love."There is no fear in love. Perfect lovecasts out fear." All too often we tend tosay that hate is the opposite of love. Andin a certain sense it is. Yet contemporarypsychology confirms John's teachingthat fear is the real enemy of love.

PEOPLE FEAR LOVE because itrequires them to be open and vulnerableto the beloved. It demands a passion, a

John's spirituality is a perfectcombination of other worldly vision anddown-to-earth concern. He does notdevide love of God from love of persons."If anyone says, 'I love God,' and hateshis neighbor, he is a liar." Thus Johnavoids the pitfalls of mere humanism thatcalls for human love without God and afalse spirituality that asks us to love Godand ignore people. John's totalspirituality overcomes that division.Thus he writes for us the first lesson inhow to be spiritual. And a mighty goodlesson it is!

We have been hearing alot about the reform of the riteof Penance in the Churchlately: community cele-brations of the sacramentand celebrating the Sacramentface to face with a more

.personal interaction betweenthe penitent and cofessor. Wehave a long way to go to makethese reforms as effective asthey might be.

We all know that the bigChurch is renewing theSacrament of Forgiveness.How about the little church,your home? Is it renewing theSacrament of Forgivenesstoo? Has anyone beenforgiven around there inrecent history?

Forgiveness should be abig thing among us Chris-tians. We follow a Lord whotold great stories aboutforgiveness, like the Prodigal

Son, which I like to call theProdigal Father, because theFather squandered hisforgiveness far more than theson squandered hisinheritance. He told us toforgive seventy times seventimes a day, or withoutnumber^ He forgave publicsinners and parties with them.He forgave his apostles whenthey abandoned him and eventhe people who hung him onthe cross.

But haven't we blockedup the pipes of forgiveness?We run to God often enoughfor it. But do we it as readilyand freely as we receive it? Isgiving forgiveness as big athing with us as it was withthe Lord? If it 's not, aren't wereally letting him down insomething he saw prettycentral to being a follower ofhis?

Sort of like thattax collector in the front of thetemple our Lord talked about.But what about becomingimpatient with one anotherover something really minor?What about taking each otherfor granted? What about no fulfillingthe little responsibilities each

person has around the house?What about becoming ob-noxious after having a couplemore drinks than we shouldhave? What about sulking,being moody and un-communicative? What aboutbeing inconsiderate with thevolume of the stereo or thehour we come in? What aboutbeing pet ty , critical andunkind? What about...? Youcan almost add to the listendlessly. How right thescriptures are when they sayeven the just person sins atleast seven times a day!

How do we handle thesesins we daily commit againsteach other? If we commit them,we sort of just let them be,hoping nobody will get on ourback over them. If someoneelse does them, we might getright on their back, to teachthem a lesson or protect ourlegitimate rights of course.

something that hurt anothermember of our family. Whynot try putting words to thatsorrow and really mean it

when we say, "Doug, I'msorry, I didn't take time out toreally listen to youy earlierthis evening," or, "Mom, Ireally am sorry for staying outso late last night." Whenthat's said, all the otherperson knows is that you aresorry. They still haven't heardyou ask to be forgiven. So whynot wind up with a, "Will youforgive me"?

Our response has to belikewise serious. "Yes, I doforgive you," with an ex-pression of that forgiveness ina handshake embrace, or paton the back. We-can't greetthe request for forgivenesswith a "That's okay," becausethat's not really taking therequest seriously.

I think it says somethingthat our Lord's greatest act offorgiveness was unasked for;it was not preceded by anapology, it was given freelyand spontaneously from thecross.

With forgiveness aregular part of our family life,we might much more safelypray to be forgiven as weforgive.

2. Lying Wall—materials:blocks or books or pillows orwastebaskets. Together sharethoughts on what lies can do tothe people who lie and the peoplewho were lied to. Build a wall at

least twenty inches tall with someof the above materials. Taketurns having people hide behindit. What can we see? How do lieshide us from others? Take thewall down slowly and sharethoughts about truth. When thewall is down, have each persontake a turn behind the spot wherethe wall was. Share thoughtsagain.

3. Love Cards—materials:crayons, paper, envelopes,stamps. Make some handmadeLOVE cards to sent to the family,friends, parish personnel orrelatives. List three kind thingsthey did and praise them for agood job.

SNACK TIME: Fresh peachsundaes.

ENTERTAINMENT: WaterBalloon Toss—swimsuits foreveryone and balloons filled withwater. It's splashy fun!

TURIN, Italy-(NC)-Inthe shadow of gray skiesoverhead and a papal electionthat captured the world'sattention, the Holy Shroud ofTurin went on public display:in the Cathedral of St. John,Aug. 27.

More than 80,000pilgrims, some in stretchers,filed past the cloth believed tobe Christ's burial garment onthe first day of the exhibit,which is scheduled to continueuntil Oct. 8.

The cloth, which bears'the negative imprint of aman's body, is displayedbehind bullet-proof glass inthe Renaissance cathedral.

EVEN TURIN'S com-munist mayor, DiegoNovelli, greeted the exhibitionof the shroud, calling it "aspecial moment, not only forbelievers, but for all thepeople."

At 7:30 a.m., afterMatins celebrated by Arch-bishop Anastasio Ballesteroof Turin, the crowds werepermitted to begin filingthrough the cathedral's naveto the Guarini Chapel, wherethe relic is displayed.

The exposition is only thethird chance the public hashad to see the shroud thiscentury. The last showingended Oct. 12, 1933.

Since then only private

showings have been held.In 1946, monks of the

Abbey of Montevergine, in theprovince of Avellino, werepermitted to see the shroud inrecognition of their havingkept it secretly during WorldWar II.

In June 1973, members ofa special commission set up bythen-Archbishop MichelePellegrino of Turin werepermitted to examine theshroud in an attempt toestablish its age andauthenticity, and film crewswere allowed to photograph itfor a showing on Italiantelevision.

THE SHROUD is a 1.4-by-4 foot piece of yellowedlinen bearing the reverseimage of a man.

Although the church hasnever taken a stand on theshroud's genuineness asChrist's burial garment, MaxFrei, a Swiss criminologist,said in 1976 that he found onit traces of pollen which in-dicated that it came fromPalestine and was about 2,000years old.

W A S H I N G T O N -(NC) —An anti-gun controlgroup has urged Catholics toboycott church collections andCatholic schools to protest theU.S. Catholic Conference'ssupport for gun control.

The Citizen's Committeeto Keep and Bear Arms, whichis based in Washington state,urged Catholic gun owners toinstead send their money toCatholics for ChristianPolitical Action—a lobbyinggroup which among otherthings opposes gun control-based in Washington, D.C.

The committee made itsappeal in the August issue ofits publication, Point Blank.

THE COMMITTEEestimated that if one-fourth ofthe nation's 50 millionCatholics divert an averagecontribution of a dollar a weekof church collections, they candeprive the American CatholicChurch of $650 million a year.

"Gun-owning Catholicparents with children inCatholic parrochial schoolscould tell their pastor in politebut no uncertain terms thatthey're going to yank theirkids out of those schoolsunless they're guaranteed thatthis anti-gun USCCpropaganda is kept out of theschool curriculum," PointBlank said.

A USCC spokesman saidthe conference has receivedbetween 20 and 30 lettersattacking its gun controlposition since the Point Blankarticle appeared.

The USCC Committee onsocial Development andWorld Peace, composed ofbishops, Religious and laity,first backed gun controllegislation in 1975. Thecommittee reaffirmed itsposition in a major paper oncrime earlier this year.

The committee supportsgun registration, licensing ofhandgun owners and a ban on"Saturday night specials,"inexpensive handguns.

The committee's publicaffairs director, John Snyder,

protestted the committeestand in a letter to BishopThomas Kelly, the USCCgeneral secretary.

Snyder said support for aban on Saturday nightspecials amounted todiscrimination against thepoor.

"It is those who areunable to afford expensivehandguns who, in thelegitimate defense of life,family and property againstcriminal aggression, haverecourse to the one effectivemeans available to them, thatis, to the inexpensive hand-gun," Snyder said.

THE POINT BLANKarticle said it received noresponse from "high hatKelly" but received an answerfrom "an anti-gun bureau-cratic functionary Msgr.Francis J. Lally."

Msgr. Lally, USCCsecretary for socialdevelopment and world peace,said his committee"recognized that this was acontroversial issue on whichmany of good faith mightdisagree. They reacted out of aconcern for life, as they havein many other instances."

A USCC spokesman saidthe conference had no com-ment beyond MSGR. Lally'sletter on criticism by theCitizen's Committee for theRight to Keep and Bear Arms.

the television series "M.A.S.H.," doesn't take criticismlightly. In response to an article by a Hartford Ar-chdiocesan official critical of TV portrayals of priests,including Father Mulcahy, actor William Christopherdescribed his character as "a sincere and dedicatedpriest."

'Days of Heaven' visuallypretty but lacks content

"Days of Heaven"(Paramount) begins in

' Chicago just before America'sentry into the First WorldWar. Bill (Richard Gere), ahot-tempered young laborer,strikes and apparently kills asteel mill foreman, He flees tothe West accompanied by hiscommon-law wife, Abby(Brooke Adams), and hisyoung sister, Linda (LindaManz), an odd-looking girlwith a prematurely aged lookwho narrates some of thestory.

The forlorn trio joins astream of migrant workersheaded for the wheat harvest,and they eventually find workon a vast farm in the TexasPanhandle. Bill and Abbypass themselves off as brotherand sister, and when Abbycatches the eye of the richowner of the farm (SamShepard), Bill, who knowsthat the man has no more thana year to live, tells her toencourage him.

SO BILL, Abby andLinda stay on after theharvest, and Abby, again atBill's urging, finally marriesthe owner, thus setting inmotion the kind of vortex ofemotions that inevitablybrings tragedy.

Writer-Director TerrenceMalick's first picture since"Badlands," which died at thebox office despite some goodcritical notices, is one of themost beautifully photo-graphed American films tocome along in some time.

Unfortunately, however,there is nothing in the story

line or characterizations thatremotely matches thegrandeur conveyed byAlmendros' and Wexler'scameras. The fundamentalplot is a triangle, and thuspassion is imperative, but thefilm is curiously devoid ofpassion of any kind.

And as far as broaderthemes go, Malick lets slipevery opportunity for socialcommentary. The rigors ofpoverty, the exploitation ofthe poor, the injustice of theclass system, the relationbetween crime anddeprivation all figure in thestory but in so perfunctory away that they do not effect theviewer. And as far as squalorgoes, here the cinematicbeauty of the film worksagainst any significantdepiction. Everything is justtoo pretty.

AND so is Richard Gereas Bill. With his sleek goodlooks, his razor-cut hair, hisclean-shaven cheeks, and hisneatly fitting clothes, he ishardly convincing as thedrifter Bill, a man down on hisluck all his life. Theanachronisms sprinkledthroughout the dialogue donot help matters either. Gerespeaks of always having hopedto make a big score, forexample, and the owner'stough foreman refers to Billand Abby as a couple of con

"artist. All this severelelyundermines all the effortsmade to obtain an authenticre-creation of time and place.

The film's biggest asset,aside from the photography, isthe performance of newcomerBrooke Adams.

Visually "Days ofHeaven" is unforgettable, butall of its beauty cannotcompensate for its lack ofcontent. The theme andtreatment are adult in nature.(PG) A - I I I - M o r a l l yunobjectionable for adults.

Archbishop Edward A.McCarthy has issued a specialcall to all Scouts and Scoutersin the Archdiocese of Miamifor their participation in theHoly Year Celebration at theOrange Bowl Oct. 6.

Al menos asi piensa un buengrupo de j6venes padres defamilia en la Archidi6cesis.

Pero no solo piensan, sinoque desde 1973 han venidodedicando su tiempo y susenergias para sacar adelante unprograma unico de formacibn y

1 apoyo a los matrimonios conhijos entre los tres y diez afios.

En IMPACTO, padres e hijosson protagonistas, y juntos vanaprendiendo a dialogar, arespetarse y a crecer, bajo laorientaci6n cristiana delmovimiento.

El proceso se inicia conprograma de fin de semana,donde padres e hijos escuchandiferentes charlas, adaptadaspor los mismos dirigentes al nivelde los participantes.

"Subrayamos la respon-sabilidad primaria de los padresen la educaci6n moral y religiosade los hijos," explica uno de loscoordinadores. "Para los hijos, elmejor modo de aprendizaje es elejemplo de los padres," anade.

La parroquia de BlessedTrinity que ofrecid cobijo aIMPACTO en sus inicios haseguido hacie'ndolo durante 38fines de semana. Tambien elColegio Loyola ha colaborado conel movimiento ofreciendo lugarde reuniones.

En ambiente de alegria yjuego, los mas pequefios vanrecibiendo la semilla.

Tengo tres afios", le dice una Joven particlpante en Impacto al padre Eduardo Alvarez, S.J.. Mientras el sacerdote juega un rato con los maspequefios los mayorcitos Juegan en el jar din. Arriba Hilda y Nelson Serpa dialogan con otras pareJas sobre la educaci6n de los pequefiosconocidos como 'Los Tres Ositos',cuando se les habla de la familiay 'Papa Dios'." Los ninos sabenpor que estan all! y de vez encuando se reunen con sus padres,que reciben un programa porseparado. Para los adultos lascharlas tratan temas educativos,de psicologia infantil,comunicacibn, expresionesreligiosas populares, Iglesia etc.

Parte del programa es unapequena presentaci6n artfsticaque los ninos preparan para suspadres.

Colaboran en el programa defin de semana unas 15 parejas,que se reparten las respon-sabilidades de charlas, en lasmesas de discusi6n, actividadesy supervisi6n de los nifios, juegosy cocina.

Comunidad de S. Benitocolocara primera piedra

Desde 1973 han participadoen IMPACTO 399 familias y 732nifios. Una gran parte continuaactiva en el Movimiento queofrece actividades familiares,picnics, bailes y charlas for-mativas a distintos niveles.

Todos forman una granfamilia y aunque ellos mismosson los lideres y protagonistastienen como Director Espiritualal padre Eduardo Alvarez S.J.

No tenemos derecho a leche:desde los 14 a los 65 afios sesupone que no se toma leche:Gracias a una antigua alumna*ue nos regala leche en polvo y devez en cuando nos provee delateria; gracias a eso nocarecemos de alimentos. Estosarticulos se venden s61o en latienda especial para diploma-ticos. Son importados o paraexportar. Pero el pueblo no losdisfruta.

Cada dfa comenzamos con elrezo de Laudes en comiin...

Despues de la oraci6n y eldesayuno juntas, comenzamos eltrabajo del dla que es muyvariado.

Hay algo que nos impactainmensamente: la ignoranciaprofunda de lo mis esencial enmateria religiosa. El pais estadescristianizado; los quehubieran podido ayudar y ser elcontrapeso, est&n fuera. La masaes supersticiosa. Muchoespiritismo. La enseftanza atea ymaterialista produce su fruto:adolescentes y jdvenes

amargados, aplastados por elpeso de la realidad. Y en laescuela la campafla y la presi6nlien a de amenazas contra los quea sis ten a la Iglesia. Como la fe noes s61ida...

En los pueblos visitamosmucho. Somos bien recibidas ya veces oigo: Ahi va la monja.Hemos iniciado unas misionespopulares con la idea de tenerlasen cada pueblo. El equipo for-mado por dos sacerdotes, dosreligiosas y una laica trabaja enla pre-misi6n durante tressemanas. Luego una semanaentera de misi6n. Los actos, todosde noche y dentro del templo.Toda manifestaci6n externa dereligiosidad esta prohibida fueradel templo...

Este tipo de misi6n ya lohemos tenido en dos pueblos. Setrata de hum anizar para que la fepueda arraigar. Preparado conmucho esmero y much a oraci6n,esperamos que Dios de' elcrecimiento. El Obispo desea queestas misiones se sigan:remueven las conciencias y

A pesar de ello un grupo demujeres nos proporciona laalegria de poder formar en laciudad un grupo de oracitin que estambien de formacidn. Nosreunimos semanalmente. Estanansiosas de aprender a orar. Sonsencillas y asi, sencillamente, lasayudo a ponerse en contacto conDios. Ellas die en que aprenden.Yo aprendo tambten...

En general nos damos clasede Catecismo. Organizamos,animamos, formamos a lascatequistas. Una de nosotras escatequista de dos pueblos queatiende.

A veces nos interpelan por lacalle: "Sefiora, £d6nde puedoconseguir una cruz como lasuya?" Y, en general, recibimosuna sonrisa de aceptacidn cuandodecimos: "Dios se lo pague."

Al salir de su visita al Cobreconcibi6 una poesia que habla dela armonf a en la Caridad, y que 61recuerda como su primer poem a.En mi opinion el "Canto a laCaridad del Cobre" abri6 aMerton las puertas a la con-templaci6n mistica en la oraci6n.

Creo que la religiosidad denuestro pueblo fue el intrumentode que se vali6 el Seflor paraadentrar en la contemplaci6n atan insigne mfstico nor-teamericano.

Pero 1978 no es diferente a1940. En una 6poca en que lossoci61ogos nos hablan demosaicos culturales, de aportes ala cultura americana, creo verque este sentido religioso es elgran aporte del exilio cubano a lacultura estadounidense.

El pasado 8 de mayo, PabloVI pidi6 al pueblo cubano queeduque la piedad popular de lagente sencilla para que seadentre cada vez mis en la feautentica. Pidi6 luego que porintercesi6n de Nuestra Sefiorade la Caridad del Cobre, Cristoles conceda permanecer siempre"firmes en la fe".

De esta fe es manifestaci6npreciosa el gran acto que cadaaflo el exilio cubano realizareuni&idose masivamente paracelebrar a su Patrona la Virgende la Caridad del Cobre, lamisma que visitor a TomasMerton.
