February 2012 Voice of the Swan Dear Swan Point Members:

Spring is hopefully just around the corner and we are very excit-ed to have a full social and golf calendar for the members of Swan Point in March. Get ready to wear green and join us for corned beef and cabbage and karaoke at the clubhouse on Sat-urday March 14th. We will have great drink specials and other libations, so mark your calendar and bring your family, friends, and neighbors out for night of fun at the clubhouse. Join us then on Sunday, for our St. Patrick’s Shamrock Ball Scramble starting

We have several other great events sprinkled through the month of March as well. Executive Chef Richard Knott will be rolling

out our new Spring Menu this month as well.

I want to take a moment to recognize one of our own. On Febru-ary, 19th, our very own Jennifer Merryman, was crowned the 2014 KemperSports Salesperson of the Year. ARC REMINDERS :

*** Trash cans/recycling/yard waste cans stored in view continue to be our # 1 biggest problem. The receptacles, particularly the bright blue cans, stand out like beacons. The solution is a very quick fix. Please store the bins/cans in your gar-age. If you prefer to store your cans outside, you may apply to ARC to increase the size of your current HVAC lattice enclosure or construct a new one. Please call the SPPOA office at: (301) 259-2100 for information and assistance.

To arrange for pickup of an unwanted recycling/yard waste can, please call the Charles County Recycling Department at 301-932-5656.

*** We have finally turned the corner and spring is in sight! March is a great time to begin sprucing up your yard. Removing any remaining fallen leaves/branches, removing/replacing dead shrubs, trimming overgrown foundation

plantings and adding a new layer of mulch to your planting beds will give your property a great springtime boost. Adding mulch during the early spring has the added benefit of helping to prevent weeds from sprouting.

If you need contact information of local handymen who may be able to assist you, please consult your 2014 Swan Point directory or call the SPPOA office at: 301-259-2100.

The Architectural Review Committee meets at 10:00 am, at the Clubhouse on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month. Requests must be received at the SPPOA office by 9:00a.m the Tuesday before a scheduled ARC meeting. Questions may be directed to the CMC On-Site Manager at: (301) 259-2100. Office hours are: 9 - 4: T, TH & FR

The Yacht Club at Swan Point will be doing its annual River Cleanup on

Saturday, April 25th starting at 2:00PM. We will walk the marina and the

pool area and walk the beach area as well. If you are interested in help-

ing out, please contact Pam Greer, 301 259 2457 or

Swan Point Yacht & Country Club 3 Voice of the Swan—March 2015

Here we go again; another prolonged winter accompanied by late

winter storms implies a late spring green up. When I started here six

years ago as Assistant Superintendent, we were mowing fairways in

March, but these past two years have turned out to be the exception.

Last year we did not begin mowing fairways until May 8th due to the

slow emergence from dormancy, and I believe this year will be no

different. Bermuda grasses require a soil temperature of 65-70 de-

grees before it begins to come out of dormancy, which typically will

take a week of 80+ degree days. Unfortunately, there is nothing we

can to do to push the Bermuda grass, as it will all be in Mother Na-

ture’s hands.

An elongated winter means aerification could also get pushed back

and recovery time for the greens could take longer due to lower soil

and air temperatures. My goal is to reduce the length of time in which

open holes are present on the greens and this weather is not condu-

cive for early March aerification, whereas in years past we could justi-

fy it. One option we are considering is topdressing greens before aeri-

fication to help warm up the green’s soil profile. I want our member-

ship to understand we are considering every option to have great

playing conditions this spring.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.
