Shavuot in a post-Enlightenment Age
How do we think about Shavuot in a post-Enlightenment Age, when we might not be sure that Moses received the Torah at Sinai? What can we still celebrate? Join us as we discuss these questions with an analogy to biblical history. What can we learn from the stories in the Bible, even if they didn’t happen
the way the Bible presents them?

Taking Hold Of Torah By Reading From It
Eitz Hayyim hi la-mahazikim bah, v'tom 'kheha m'ushar
It is a tree of life for those who grasp it, and all who hold onto it are happy.
It is with these words that we return the Torah to the ark each time that it is used during prayer. As we compare our Torah to a tree, with deep roots extending out over millennia, we acknowledge that this treasure is ours to take hold of, recognizing the wisdom, meaning, and blessing that come along with this choice. In a few days, we will be celebrating the Festival of Shavuot, a holiday which commemorates the receiving of the Torah at Mount Sinai and asks us to consider the role that Torah plays in our daily lives. This year, as we approach this sacred time in our calendar, I am feeling so grateful to be a part of a community that has spent a considerable amount of energy empowering others to, quite literally, take hold of this tree of life.
When I first arrived at this congregation, Cantor Siegel had instituted a wonderful program where our teens would come back after their Bar or Bat Mitzah on any given Shabbat to read from the Torah. After 12 readings they would receive a tikkun (the book used to learn how to read Torah), after 18 readings they would receive a yad (the pointer used to read from the Torah), and after 24 readings they would be considered a “master Torah Reader” and their name would be added to our Congregation Torat El plaque. Week after week I would watch, inspired, as more and more of our young people came forward to read Torah. Month after month, I was so proud of the empowered community of readers that we were creating in our kehillah. But what is most amazing about this program is that upon Cantor Siegel's retirement, it not only continued, but expanded tremendously! Under the incredible leadership of Ben Laskowitz, these past two years have seen a significant increase in participants for Torah reading, as well as an expansion of this program to include training lay leaders in how to lead services on Shabbat morning. Over the past year alone, we have had 67 Torah readers, 33 Haftorah readers, and 13 people lead services. Equally impressive is the fact that this is now a multi-generational program, including individuals ranging in age from 13 to 90.
Why is this such an important part of our congregation? Why do we place such an emphasis on expanding our pool of readers and leaders? Because the Torah does not belong to the Jewish professionals alone; the Torah belongs to all of us, equally. By working to create a culture of individuals who can read from the Torah, and quite literally take hold of it, we hope to create a community of members who take that skill and begin to unpack, wrestle, and grow spiritually from what it is that they are reading. By creating individuals who are not only literate, but proficient, in these ritual skills, we also seek to empower our members across the generations to take rightful ownership of a tradition that belongs to them and to inspire others to do the same.
As Shavuot approaches, let us celebrate these dedicated readers and leaders, led and encouraged by our devoted teacher Ben Laskowitz. As this Festival of Shavuot approaches, let us take a moment to remember that in order to receive Torah, we need to first be willing to take hold of it. Learning to read from the Torah, Haftorah, or lead in our Shabbat services is one way to do just that.
Will this be the year that you sign up? Will this be the year that you take hold of Torah, develop a new skill, and share it with your Torat El family? There is perhaps no time better than the upcoming Festival of Shavuot to take hold of this incredible opportunity, which I am confident, will indeed bring you much happiness!
For more information, contact Ben Laskowitz at [email protected], or call him at 732-531-4410.
Hag Sameach! Have a wonderful Shavuot holiday.

Dear Congregant:
Since the creation of Congregation Torat El, we have sought to move forward in many areas, including growing our membership, implementing a sustaining commitment model, and offering innovative programs which create multiple entry points for us to connect with the synagogue and each other. We have also evolved ritually.
Our Ritual Committee and Rabbis are constantly working to meld our practice of Judaism with the realities of modern life so that we all have a deeper, more meaningful experience in our synagogue and community interactions.
To further these efforts, we are excited to announce that we will be purchasing new siddurim this summer. Rabbi Schonbrun explains the thinking as to why and why now:
A few years ago I learned that the current Shabbat siddur which we use, Siddur Hadash, which was published in the late 1980s/early 1990s, is no longer in print. As is the case with many prayer books, while our Siddur has more English and poetry available, the liturgy itself can feel somewhat stale and inaccessible for many individuals -- from the seasoned participant in services, to the occasional seeker of spiritual meaning.
Fortunately, the Rabbinical Assembly has just produced an extraordinary prayer book, Siddur Lev Shalem, which has the potential to completely transform the way that you and I experience prayer. I have learned about it, I have used it, and I found it to be a truly remarkable and enriching experience. This siddur, like the High Holiday Machzor Lev Shalem that was produced a few years ago, does something that no previous siddur of our movement has done. It takes into account the perspective of both the participant, and the prayer leader. Complete with translations in contemporary, clear language, commentary providing historical context, more transliteration, as well as over 300 kavanot (comments and poetry to help us spiritually focus), this prayer book is a remarkable accomplishment.
It is in many senses both traditional and innovative at the same time--offering the richness of traditional prayer, coupled with innovation, poetry, and prayer readings for a variety of different occasions. I am confident that once we begin using it during our Shabbat and Festival services, our individual and collective experience will be both enriched and transformed. I look forward to introducing this prayer book to you in the fall, studying it together, as we continue to look for ways to strengthen our relationship with our heritage, our community and our God.
To get a "sneak peak" please go to: http://www.rabbinicalassembly.org/resources-ideas/lev-shalem-series/siddur-lev-shalem.
We would like to offer you the opportunity to be part of this evolution in Congregation Torat El. We will be accepting donations toward the purchase of the new siddurim. For each $54 donation, a name plate will be placed in the inside cover of one book. Of course, multiple donations are welcome. If you would like to help our Congregation in our efforts to grow and move forward, please complete the form below and return it with your donation to the temple office.
Thank you.

FROM THE DESK OF LAWRENCE SHAPIRO
Welcome Spring! It has been a long winter, for those of us who are in New Jersey year round.
Which helps us appreciate Spring that much more.
Spring means Passover, Shavuot, and our annual Brunch. This year we honored our Past Presidents,
those who have served from 1985 to 2015. I hope by the time you read this you will have joined us
at the Brunch to support the Temple and to honor and thank those who have given so generously of
their time and talents to our congregation.
Spring also means cleaning. As I clean out files, I am reminded of all that we have accomplished
halfway through my term and of the work that remains to be done. As we move into Summer and
what for most of you is a relaxing time of year, rest assured that we are planning, coordinating and
working to continue to make Congregation Torat El the best that it can be and get ready for the
High Holidays and the New Year.
To that end, I have received comments from many of you in response to our letter requesting
feedback on the Rabbis. Many of you also provided feedback on the temple at large. I thank you for
your input and assure you that we are working to implement much of what we heard in terms of
constructive criticism and ideas for improving services, programs, and the temple overall. I hope
you will take the time to help us implement changes and improvements and come enjoy all that
Congregation Torat El has to offer.
Larry
Yasher Koach to our Bat Mitzvah Hi my name is Danni Horowitz. I am in seventh grade at Ocean Township Intermediate School. For part of my Bat Mitzvah project I donated my time at Jewish Family & Children’s Service to help by preparing bags of food and handing them out to people in need. Doing this made me realize how fortunate I am to have all the basics in life such as a family, a house, three-plus meals each day, and access to a good education. I am also helping an organization called ChangeALife. This organization helps kids in Uganda go to school by giving each child a sponsor. For the past five years my family has sponsored a girl named Rose. The funds we provide give Rose hope that she can escape the extreme struggles she and her family face and give her access to food and education that many of the children in her community do not have. Sadly, another girl named Sharon lost her sponsor, so when I found this out I wanted to find a way to sponsor her. With the help of friends and family I have been fundraising to get enough money to provide at least a year (and hopefully more) of sponsorship for Sharon. This is a great organization and I am so glad that I was able to help a child with a dream. These were great opportunities to begin my journey as an official part of the Jewish community. I look forward to continuing my family's tradition of tzedakah and mitzvot.
