seek ing “Emm a nu e l ”- Our reasOn FOr the seasOnProf.Dr.Kurian Joseph

Once again we are in the “season of advent”, intended to be a time to prepare our hearts

for the coming of Christ, marked by self-reflection, anticipation and, ultimately, joyful

celebration of the savior’s coming as Christmas. it is a season to remind the longing

and anticipation of God’s people who, for centuries, awaited the coming Messiah and

to prepare ourselves to live in joyful expectation of his second advent. it is always a

special time for us to remember that “for to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and

the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called wonderful

Counselor, Mighty God, everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (isaiah 9:6) and “the word

became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son

from the Father, full of grace and truth”(John 1:14) “so that at the name of Jesus every

knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess

that Jesus Christ is lord, to the glory of God the Father”.( Philippians 2:9-11). in a world

where worry, not peace, prevails, let us remember our call to stir up that good news

again, by seeking “emmanuel” which means “God is with us? (Matthew 1:23).

God created us to be collaborators with him, his son and the holy spirit, to carry our cross

to be a partner in the process. we have the clear examples of mother Mary as the virtuous

and wondrous woman chosen for giving birth of our lord and with him throughout his

Mission. Mary surrendered everything to embrace the will of God by saying “…be it unto

me according to thy word.” if we are seeking his will, even when confused, he will not let

us make a wrong turn as in the case of Joseph, the just and the wise, who trusted in God.

Jesus reaches as far as he can reach - at the bottom of the socio-economic spectrum,

the shepherds, having heard the good news of the birth of the savior and Messiah,

immediately went to find baby Jesus. After some time, three wise men, guided by the

brilliant star in the sky, travelled from a far eastern country to find the new king. They

knelt and worshipped the savior and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

these intellectual, well-connected, politically powerful astrologers were intellectually

honest with the truth and they accepted him, regardless of the cost. are we among those

shepherds or the wise men or like the innkeeper who had no room for Jesus or like the

herod who wanted to eliminate him?

Christmas season should reassure and remind us that God is with the vulnerable and

needy. Being born in an environment of extreme poverty, he dwells among the poor

and the down-trodden, the sick and dying, the hungry, the oppressed and even in those

we hate, especially with those experiencing isolation and loneliness. it is our calling to

provide a room for the Christ-child, to offer our talents in the service of others, to bring a

message of joy to those in need and to walk humbly with others along the pilgrimage of

life, with courage, forbearance and faith amid the noise and confusion of life. it is the time

to remove the obstacles (sins) in our life that will prevent us from connecting to God and

to our neighbours. God understands that if we work for it, if we break our backs to get it,

we, as simple beings, will appreciate it.

the traditional date of celebrating Christmas on December 25 goes back to a.D. 273,

chosen to counteract the influence of paganism by proclaiming “ the Light of the world

and his triumph over the night of sin”( luke 1:78-79). let us not forget the fact that “Jesus

is our reason for the season”. he is the One to whom we look for leadership and salvation.

the emmanuel theme should prompt us to hear God through his word and holy spirit to

enable transformation and growth in the love, awareness and impact of emmanuel. let

our Christmas celebrations do not merely become a new form of Paganism, a festival of

consumerism, over-eating, family gatherings, gift-giving and office parties. Let it be an

opportunity to show the magnanimity of Christian virtues exemplified by the teachings

of Jesus Christ? let us join hands with those who put their minds and personal energy to

help the needy and work for justice and care of the environment. May all of us be filled

with the wonder of Mary, the obedience of Joseph, the joy of the angels, the eagerness

of the shepherds, the determination of the wise men, and the peace of the emmanuel.

Merry Christmas!

angels up in the sky

You fly so high,

i would like to see you one day

Flapping your wings up and down in heaven,

what a great thing angels could do

i would like to do that too,

But always be with me

Guardian angels protect me

helping me always in my studies,

when you paint with your paintbrush

and make a rainbow in the sky

I wish to fly beside you,

You will disappear in the sky

Oh! i will wait until you reappear

O understanding angels,

i thank you so much !
