Vodafone Malta Foundation and HSBC Malta Foundation help in the restoration of the Wignacourt Museum The Wignacourt Collegiate Museum in Rabat Malta has been reopened after a thorough refurbishment of the whole building, thanks to a joint sponsorship of €70,000 by Vodafone Malta Foundation and HSBC Malta Foundation.

Refurbishment works began in 2007 and consisted of several processes to bring the Museum back to

the glory it enjoyed in the old days.

"Inaugurated by Grand Master Aloph de Wignacourt in the beginning of the

17th century, the Museum was in need of an upgrade," said Fr John Azzopardi, Curator of the

Musuem. "The Foundations' substantial sponsorship has been an extremely valid contribution towards

the very big expense that was spent to bring the Museum back to its former glory."

Refurbishment works included the delicate restoration of six almost rotten wooden roofs, the

restoration of the cupola of the Museum's old Chapel, the replacement of a large wooden beam in

the main corridor upstairs, the

placing of several wooden beams supporting the roofs for the new compact shelving of the archives

and library, the consolidation of a large arch in the lower arched floor near the internal courtyard, the

replacement of six very large windows in the main corridor, covering the very extensive roof of the

building with membrane and numerous other minor improvements to the building.

"As Vodafone Malta Foundation, we feel that it is part of our

responsibility to support our cultural heritage," said Gemma Mifsud Bonnici, Chairperson of

Vodafone Malta Foundation. "It is only through such initiatives that such heritage may be protected

for future generations."

"The Museum's premises have been thoroughly refurbished to an exemplary

standard. The HSBC Malta Foundation was behind this large project in

appreciation of the building's great historical significance and unique

collection of invaluable artefacts," said Mark Watkinson, HSBC Malta Chief Executive Officer. "We

encourage all to visit and enjoy the historical wealth so well preserved and displayed within its walls."

The Wignacourt Museum is located just outside the walls of the Old Roman City of Malta and

materially linked to St Paul's Grotto, Malta's cradle of Christianity. It played an important role

throughout Malta's history. Upon its inauguration, it served as a residence to the Chaplains of the

Knights of Malta. Furthermore, a complex of World War II shelters with two main

corridors and fifty rooms are found at the underground level of the building while on ground

floor there is an oven that used to provide more than 2,000 loaves per day for the population of

Rabat during World War II.

The Museum has various valuable collections, including 17th to 19th century

Spanish, Italian and Maltese silver, a unique wooden altar used for the celebration of Mass on the

galleys of the Order of the Knights of Malta,

old relics and reliquaries, sculptures in wood, alabaster and bronze including a medallion by

Alessandro Algardi, maps, coins, prints and rare books among which is King Henry VIII's 'Septem

Sacramants" written to confute Martin Luther. An impressive picture gallery with works by Mattia

Preti, Antoine Favray, Francesco Zahra and other Maltese as well as European Artists is found on

the main floor.

Vodafone backs creative recycling Vodafone Malta togther with the Vodafone Foundation embarked on an initiative to support a local voluntary organisation, Recycle Malta in its first Crafts and DIY competition to promote creative recycling.

Last February, Recycle Malta launched an online Facebook competition on their page, where people

were asked to submit photos of homemade recycled projects in order to win several prizes.

"Managing waste has always been a proverbial issue for our country," said Miriam Dalli, Corporate

Affairs Senior Executive at Vodafone Malta. "Through this initiatve, Vodafone and the Vodafone Malta

Foundation, together with Recycle Malta will help people appreciate the things they have. The

initiative also helped us as an organisation to reinforce our commitment to take care of the

environment, with our staff encouraging family and friends to join the group and recycle and reuse

items which they do not use anymore."

Maroushka Zammit, Founder of Recycle Malta said, "The Group was created to connect people who

are in need of giving their unwanted items together with people who may be able to reuse them. This in

turn saves waste, money and the environment. Our first ever Recycled Crafts/DIY competition on

Facebook was a good start with 19 participants sending in their entries. The aim was not only to

encourage recycling but to encourage the creative reuse of items. I'm really pleased to see that the

concept has been grasped and is being enjoyed by those who have joined us."

Prizes were given out for first, second and third place. Abigail Grech Cassar from Gozo won the first

prize, a Vodafone Smart II Phone. Abigail presented a Christmas Tree made from small needles and

sequins taken from an old jersey. Recycle Malta is a voluntary, pre-waste recycling initiative that began

on Facebook in May 2012, with its website www.recyclemalta.org launched later in June 2012. For

Bank of Valletta staff spread Easter cheer to children

Thursday, 04 April 2013, 15:35

Beaming smiles greeted Bank of Valletta staff who dropped into the Ursuline Creche and St Patrick’s Sliema with dozens of figolli for Easter.

BOV encouraged staff to make an extra figolla when baking for their family. The response was so overwhelming that there were enough for two homes.

“We organise a number of events which enable the staff from every section of the Bank to engage with each other and with the community – it fosters a great team spirit and the response is always great.

“Just as the Bank does that little bit extra to help the community in which it operates, we encourage a sense of belonging and altruism among our staff. Being an employee is not just about working for the Bank but also being a part of its values…” explained BOV Head of Media and Community Relations Vanessa Macdonald.

The Ursuline Creche in Sliema is a Home whose charisma is mainly that of caring for children who for various social reasons cannot live in their natural families. At the Creche, everyone is accepted, loved and cared for, no matter their religion, race or social class.

The Salesians' work at St Patrick's focuses on meeting the comprehensive needs of children - compelled to live in care - where their past traumas can be addressed and their future gradually reconstructed.

A group of Bank of Valletta employees recently participated in planting around 100 trees at

the Golden Sands Scout Area at Majjistral Park.

This tree planting activity was aimed at raising awareness within the community of the

Bank’s mission to safeguard the environment for future generations.

Tree planting projects are attractive to organisations on a number of levels as they reduce their

carbon footprint, improve the environment, and enhance their environmental reputation.

With numerous branches across the Maltese Islands and a workforce of over 1,500, BOV has

very strong ties with Maltese society.

“Our environment is an important asset that cannot be taken for granted. Thus, we seek to

remain at the forefront in organising activities to improve our habitat, while taking initiatives

to enhance awareness about environmental issues, both within the Bank and among the

community at large,” BOV’s Social Responsibility Officer Stephanie Agius said.

After adopting a green culture some years ago, BOV is reducing its carbon footprint through a

series of initiatives including the use of renewable energy sources, waste management and

investment in consumption-reducting technology.
