Editor’s Desk…..Today the educationists are familiar
with the word “STEM- ScienceTechnology Engineering and
Mathematics”. We need to teach our
students within the fields of STEM in
order to be competitive in the 21st
century global economy. Without solid
foundation in Mathematics one cannot
be successful in STEM. The importance
of a solid education in mathematics
education goes much beyond the current
conversation of improved proficiency on
test scores. In Greek, Mathematics means
“Learning” and in Hebrew it’s root is“Thinking”. In a seed, there is an infinite
capacity to grow. Infinity exists in a finite
seed. Students are like seeds. This
newsletter has paved a pathway for them
to demonstrate and share their
mathematical knowledge in a common
platform.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Our P.G and Research Department of
Mathematics which was started in 1957 is one
of the oldest and premier department. P.G
Mathematics was introduced in 1983 and our
department was elevated as Dr.S.S.Pillai
Research Centre in Mathematics in 2008. At
present four of our faculty are guiding Ph.D.
scholars in the area of Topology, Graph
Theory and Algebra. In our department so far
scholars 67 have been awarded Ph.D and 8
are pursuing research in various fields of
Mathematics. One major research project and
one minor project have been undertaken by
our faculty. Our department faculties had
published more than 400 research articles in
various refereed national and international
journals.
S.S.Pillai Endowment for Research in
MathematicsS.S.Pillai Research Centre for
Mathematics is named afterDr.S.Sivasankara Narayana Pillai, aneminent mathematician. He belongs to Vallannear Shencottai, a southern part ofTamilnadu. His seminal contribution to thefield of Number Theory, particularly toWaring’s Problems, remains unparalleled.Dr.Pillai (1901 – 1950) served in AnnamalaiUniversity, Travancore University andUniversity of Calcutta. He was also a visitingfellow at Institute of Advanced Studies,Princeton University, U.S.A. He was also thefirst mathematician to be awarded D.Sc. bythe University of Madras.
As a part of our department’scommitment to relevant research, anendowment, named Dr.S.S.Pillai, has beenestablished with the generous and volunteercontributions of our faculty members andresearch scholars. The objective of theendowment is to promote the spirit ofresearch in mathematics among students andteachers to study the recent trends inmathematical research and to disseminateknowledge by conducting variousprogramme which help students to make acareer in Mathematics.
NOBEL PRIZE OF MATHEMATICS
The Fields Medal is often described as the “Nobel Prize ofMathematics” and for a long time has been regarded as the mostprestigious award in the field of Mathematics. Unlike the Nobel Prize,
the Fields Medal is only awarded every four years. The Fields Medal
also has an age limit: a recipient must be under age 40 on 1 January of
the year in which the medal is awarded.

SRINIVASA RAMANUJAN
Srinivasa Iyengar Ramanujan(22
December 1887-26 April 1920) was an
Indian mathematical genius and autodidact.
Though he had almost no formal training in
pure mathematics, he made substantial
contributions to mathematical analysis,
numbertheory, infiniteseries and continued
fractions including solutions to mathematical
problems considered to be unsolvable.
Ramanujan initially developed his own
mathematical research in isolation.It was
quickly recognized by Indian
mathematicians. During his short life,
Ramanujan independently compiled nearly
3,900 results.
The number 1729 is known as the Hardy-
Ramanujan number after a famous visit by
Hardy to see Ramanujan at a hospital. His
birthday is celebrated as the “NATIONALMATHEMATICS DAY”.
S.S.PILLAI
Subbaya Sivasankaranarayana
Pillai(1901-1950) was born at Vallam near
the famous waterfalls town namely
Courtallam which is situated in Thirunelveli
district, Tamilnadu. He specialized in number
theory. His contribution to Waring’s Problemwas described in 1950 by
K.S.Chandrasekharan as “almost certainlyhis best piece of work and one of the very
best achievements in Indian Mathematics
since Ramanujan”.In 1927, S. S. Pillai received a Research
Studentship at the University of Madras to
work under Professors K. Ananda Rao and
R. Vaidyanathaswamy. Then he joined
Annamalai University as a lecturer. There his
mathematical achievements seem to have
peaked. Indeed, Madras university honored
him by awarding D.Sc. for his research
achievements. He was the first one to get this
honor in Mathematics.

“Pi” World
“Pi Day” is celebrated on March 14.
Pi = Circumference divided by
diameter.
Pi is a most famous irrational number.
An irrational number is a decimal that
does not terminate or repeat.
The world record for a computer
finding the digits of Pi was made in
2013 to eight quadrillion places to the
right of the decimal point (quadrillion
= ).

Kansas.
Albert Einstein was born on Pi day
(14/03/1879) in Germany.
The easiest way to remember the value
of Pi (3.1415926) is by counting each

On 11/03/2009 the American
government recognised Pi day as a day
of celebration.

MAGIC SQUARE
A magic square is an arrangement of the numbers from 1 to in an n*n matrix,with
each number occuring exactly once, and such that the sum of the entries of any row,any
column,or any main diagonal is the same and the sum is called as the magic constant or
magic sum of the magic square.It is not hard to show that this sum must be .
Now, here we are going to see, one of the most famous 4*4 magic square
Ramanujan’s Magic Square
The magic in this square is,
The sum of any column is 139.
The sum of any row is 139.
The sum of diagonal elements are 139.
The sum of any 2*2 box is 139.
The first row 22,12,18,87 is special because it is “RAMANUJAN’S BIRTH DATE”

MATHS ‘MAGIC’
Write down the three-digit
number whose digits are
decreasing.
Then reverse the digits to create a
new number.
Subtract the reversed number
from the original number.
With the resulting number , add it
to the reverse of itself.
The number you will get is 1089.
For example:
Let us take 532(three digit number in
decreasing order).
Then the reverse is 235.
Subtract 532-235 we get 297.
Now add 297 and its reverse 792
The resulting answer is 1089.

Geometrical view of series
Consider a rectangle with length 2 units and
breadth 1 unit and hence with area 2 sq.units.
Partition it as shown in the diagram. The area
of the rectangle is equal to the sum of the
areas of the subdivided regions. Here, we
have infinite subregions.

Does 0.999 (repeated) equal “one”?
You might be surprised by the
answer which is “yes”. Here goes
the proof.
The expression 0.999... is some
number.It has some value. Call this
numerical value “x”, so 0.999... = x.
Multiply this equation by ten,
x = 0.999...
10x = 9.999...
Subtract the former from the later:
10x = 9.999…
x = 0.999…
9x = 9.000…
Solving, we get x = 1,
0.999... = 1.
Magical evolution of standard
formulae.
We all know the formula to find the sum
of first n natural numbers. Here comes its
beautiful evolution.
In elementary school in the late
1700’s, Gauss was asked to find the
sum of the numbers from 1 to 100.
The question was assigned as “busy work”
by the teacher, but Gauss found the answer
rather quickly by discovering a pattern. His
observation was as follows:
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + … + 98 + 99 + 100
Gauss noticed that if he was to split the
numbers into two groups (1 to 50 and 51 to
100), he could add them together vertically
to get a sum of 101.
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + … + 48 + 49 + 50
100 + 99 + 98 + 97 + 96 + … + 53 + 52 + 51
1 + 100 = 101
2 + 99 = 101
3 + 98 = 101
.
.
48 + 53 = 101
49 + 52 = 101
50 + 51 = 101
Gauss realized that his final total would
be 50(101) = 5050.
The sequence of numbers (1, 2, 3, … ,
100) is arithmetic and when we are looking
for the sum of a sequence, we call it a series.
Thanks to Gauss, there is a special formula
we can use to find the sum of a series:

Q MAT -18:
Our PG and Research Department of Mathematics conducted Q- MAT 18, an interschool
Maths Quiz Competition for the Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli District school students on
16.10.2018(Tuesday).Dr. A. Nellai Murugan, Dr. J. Antony Rex Rodrigo, Dr. A. Nagarajan ,
Dr. L. Meenakshi Sundaram and Dr. S. Jackson were the quiz masters. Sri Kamakshi Vidyalaya
Matriculation Hr.Sec School, Thoothukudi won the rolling trophy sponsored by Canara Bank,
Chidambaranagar branch, Thoothukudi. Sakthi Vinayagar Hindu Vidyalaya, Thoothukudi
secured the second place and A.P.C.Veerabahu Mat.Hr.Sec.School secured the Third Place.
Our principal Dr.C.Veerabahu presided over the function. Shri. S. Rajangam, Chief Manager,
Canara Bank, Chidambaranagar, Thoothukudi felicitated the function. Dr.S. Pious Missier,
Principal, Don Bosco College of Arts and Science, Keela Eral was the chief guest of the
function distributed the prizes.
