Focus on vocational training and employment opportunities for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Model Programs
– Goodwill – The Salvation Army – Walgreens
Few businesses have formalized their own employment training programs designed to serve individuals with ASD. The businesses that have pioneered in the field include:
Goodwill
Utilizes a Transitional Employment Program designed to hire, promote up, and promote out individuals with barriers to employment. The key components of the program are:
– Hire – Promote Up – Promote Out
Salvation Army
Developmental Disabilities Program (DDP) has been in existence for 30 years.
– Residential Services Program – Community Options Program – Supported Employment Program
Currently only available in Pennsylvania and Delaware
Walgreens
The REDI ( Retail Employees with Disabilities ) Program will roll-out in 2013-Walgreens will partner with agencies in the community.
ü Store manager trains the agency job coach. ü Job coach trains the externs. ü Evaluation of employee by store manager ü Placement with either Walgreens or other similar retail stores
Businesses that Partner • Many businesses are willing to train and
employ individuals with ASD however they do not have their own training program.
• In this scenario partnering agencies are responsible for assessing the skills required for the various jobs, job coaching and evaluation of the interns.
• Some businesses that follow this model include: Best Buy, Fresh and Easy, Kmart, Dollar Tree and Petco, Sharkeys.
Components of a Vocational Training Program The Help Group's Bridgeport Vocational Education Program and Sunrise School
– Serve young adults between the ages of 18 and 22 with special needs.
– The programs work to promote growth and development using a structured curriculum combining classroom instruction with
real-world application.
Vocational Ed Programs
Four phases of the programs: – Acquiring the basic knowledge. – Understanding Concepts – Practical Application – General Application
• The ability to interact with co-workers and supervisors is essential in job retention.
• The programs place strong emphasis on social skill development.
Assessment
Career Inventories: – Combination of formal and informal assessments – Interviews – Observation of the individual
While Career Development curriculum provides instruction at various levels, effective assessment and accurate
evaluation are essential. Assessment should drive instruction.
Evaluation
Evaluation can occur at various levels
– Self-Evaluation – Staff Evaluation – Job Site Evaluation
Vocational Training
Provides hands-on learning through managing and working at on-campus businesses in addition to receiving site-based training at local community businesses and establishments.
Vocational Training
Simulated Work Environment – Pair classroom instruction with various
multiple classroom businesses and school-wide enterprises.
• E-Commerce • Student run café and coffee shop • Campus maintenance • Gardening • Clothing Resource Program • Student Run Store • Various Office Jobs and Errands
Vocational Training
Off-Campus Internships – Job coaches provide support to the individual
within a real-world work experience in a natural environment.

Internship Considerations
Internships are designed to provide a realistic, meaningful work experience for the individual.
– Length of work shift – Length of internship – Tasks – Intern expectations – Role of the manager – Role of the job coach
Accommodations in the Workplace
Effective accommodations in the workplace include:
• adjustment in schedules • supported instructions • job procedure modifications • facilitation of employee interactions
Not all of these accommodations will be necessary and each situation should be considered on an individual basis.
