I. INTRODUCTION

The development of human resources is a basic pre-requisite to the growth and

development of an economy. The children constitute the most important base of human resource.

Recognition of educational programmes for young children as an essential part of continuous

education has developed gradually in the whole world. However, today a large group of both

parents and educators understand the significance of the child's early experiences for his

educational foundation.

Early care and nurture have a decisive and long-lasting impact on how children develop

and their ability to learn. Early childhood development has more often been recognized as taking

care of health, nutrition and education. Early development is clearly the foundation for building

personality of a child and needs concentrated efforts on the part of early childhood organizations.

During the first few years of life, rapid growth and development occur in all domains forming a

strong foundation for learning later skills.

The first six years of life are the most 'critical' years in a child's lifespan since the rate of

development in these years is more rapid than at any other stage of development. Research

indicates that about 50 percent of intellectual development that takes place is between conception

and four years and about 80 percent between 4 and 6 years. Environmental influences have great

bearing on the child during this period of rapid development. The early childhood education

programme should therefore include activities and experiences for the realization of this goal.

Day Care Centre’s like crèches and pre schools are increasing in number and there is great

demand for trained crèche supervisor and preschool teachers. The vocational course on "pre-school

Teacher Training" has many opportunities to work as crèche managers and preschool teachers. As

the course is a two year programme students are well equipped with required knowledge and skills

in organizing and managing crèches and pre-schools. Students are provided with on the job training

to handle children and provide learning and stimulating pre-school environment. Hence, students

of vocational course are offered better job facilities and opportunities for vertical mobility by

Government of Andhra Pradesh.
