Sonic BOOM!• The year was 1947. on an October morning, test pilot Charles

“Chuck” Yeager sealed himself into his X-1 plane. It was a rocket-powered plane. Yeager and the plane shot down the runway. His plane soared into the air. Yeager pressed sown on the throttle. The plane went faster and faster through the air. Them all of a sudden, the X-1 hit the speed of Mach 1. A deafening BOOM rang out. Until that day, no pilot had ever flown a plane faster than the speed of sound. The sound the plane made was the sonic boom. It’s the sound that occurs whenever something goes faster than the speed of sound, or breaks the sound barrier. Many planes can now travel that fast, or faster.
