By Holly Schmidt The holiday season truly comes alive this Friday, November 25th in Downtown Vernon with the Festival of Christmas Traditions, Vernon’s Offi cial Light-Up event. “The planning for this event started in January, but the planning really kicks in the day after Sunshine Festival” says Holly Schmidt, Downtown Vernon Associations Events & Marketing Manager. “I’m very excited to have so many excellent community organizations and businesses participating in the event this year,” says Schmidt, adding, “we have people from all different areas of the community participating”. You’ll be able to play road hockey with the Special Olympics of BC, compete in a PlasmaCar race at Vernon Teach & Learn, enjoy a Nativity Scene by Emmanuel Baptist Church and check out medieval activities with the Chatelaine of Krakenfjord. When you’re downtown on Friday, you’ll also be able to check out these community groups: BC Winter Games, Halina Seniors Group, Silver Star Mountain Resort, Upper Room Mission, Salvation Army, BC Hydro Power Smart, NOCCS, Vernon & Community Music School, Camp Hurlburt, Taoist Tai Chi Society, Kinder Arts & Camp Arrowlfi ght. “There are also many Downtown businesses coming outon the street to provide the community with somethingincluding Teeter Totter Toys, The Sprouted Fig, A&W,Vernon Teach & Learn, Second Street Clothing, The Cracked Pot Coffee Emporium, The Shack, Cottons Chocolates and
Downtown Internet Lounge,” says Schmidt. Free visits with Santa are always the highlight of the evening, and will be available once again this year – but at Cheek to Cheek Dance Studio. “Lorna at Cheek to Cheek has allowed Santa to take over her studio on Friday, so please remember your camera when you come down on Friday – visits with Santa are free & you are welcome to take your own pictures,” says Schmidt adding, “We are also encouraging anyone who takes a picture with Santa to share it with us on Facebook afterwards – for a chance to win $150 in Downtown Dollars!”
The always popular activities will be back again this year. Nature’s Fare Markets will be bringing you Cookie Decorating, while Bookland will bring you Storytelling and you can write a letter to Santa with The UPS Store. You’ll also have the chance to win with Margherita’s at the Hockey Shoot Out. When you get a little chilly, you can check out the bonfi re & roast a marshmallow with Santa’s Anonymous and Vernon Fire and Rescue Services. You’ll also be able to take a family carriage ride and let the kids experience a pony ride. New this year will be the Make Your Own Gift Bag Station, Face Painting with Kiki the Magical Christmas Elf along with various community vendors & the activities they are bringing. The holiday entertainment stage kicks off at 5:00 pm with the Offi cial Light Up Ceremony with fantastic entertainers including Kiki the Magical Christmas Elf, The Argyll Celtic Choir, Vernon Community Singers, Some Other Time Quartet and Sorella to follow. “Although I’m excited for the entire event and truly enjoy every part of it, I’m really excited about the Community Christmas Tree this year,” says Schmidt. “It’s something I’ve been putting the pieces together for since January & I really look forward to seeing it offi cially light up at 5:15 pm on Friday night”. Although the tree will be going up on Tuesday, it will not be lit until the night of the Festival. “I’m really looking forward to seeing the entire community out in Downtown Vernon this Friday night and I look forward to hearing how much you enjoyed the event,” adds Schmidt.
