10 Principles of Garden Design

A lovely garden can please the eye in the same way as a beautiful painting can, but the advantage of a garden is that it can also involve all the other senses. But what separates out an aesthetically pleasing garden from a simple field of plants and flowers?

In this book, the author sets out the ten principles for de-signing a garden. Whether you have a tiny plot of land or more than an acre, the areas outlined here give direction and provide inspiration to anyone creating a garden from scratch or redesigning an existing patch. Covering all as-pects of garden design from planning, to the mixtures of heights and colours that will work together, to choosing the types of plants which allow the garden to transcend the seasons, experienced garden designer Susie White guides the way.

With clear explanations and useful suggestions plus over 140 photographs of gardens from all over the world, 10 Principles of Garden Design provides an introduction to the field for students planning to study garden design or beginning gardeners.

The Author: Susie White is a devoted gardener, journalist and author who has been writing about gardens for the past 25 years. She has written seven gardening books and lectures widely. Her articles have appeared in Homes and Gardens, Gardens Illustrated, The Garden (RHS), and The English Garden among others. Her books include Gardens of Northumberland and the Borders, Origanum, and The Thyme Handbook.

Street art is part of every cityscape. By street art, we mean the crazy and wonderful stencils, paste-ups, paintings and little sculptures that decorate our urban landscape, catching our eyes and surprising us with their beauty, humour or pithy comment on society. It is, however, ephemeral and the work can disappear very quickly or be damaged by the elements or vandalism. Through his website, Claudelondon has documented thousands of works by artists active in the city.

Banksy has already become a household name and Prime Minister David Cameron even gave President Obama a painting by street artist Eine. The street art scene in London is one of the most vibrant in the world attracting not only local artists, but also artists from other countries. Street art galleries are popping up everywhere and attracting lots of visitors. Guided street art walks are appearing in major cities in the UK, the US and other countries.

While including some of the more established street art-ists such as Eine, Invader, Banksy, Roa, David Walker and Swoon, the author also includes many of the new generation of street artists like Stik, Public Spirit, Xylo, Elbow Toe, Ludo, T. Wat who create wonderful quirky pieces that deserve a wider audience. A must have for anyone interested in street art, urban street culture or contemporary art.

The Author: Claude Crommelin, who is known as Claude-london, has been documenting the street art of London since 2008 after moving to the city from The Nether-lands. He is a professional photographer who specialized in photographing contemporary artworks for museums. His personal work, however, has focused on record-ing the counter culture, punk, squatter and post-punk scenes. His photographs have been exhibited in various solo and group shows in the Netherlands.

Fashion Textiles Now

The textile industry is active all over the globe. Behind the catwalks there is a whole hidden system which combines industry, glamour, high finance and above all, design. It encompasses haute couture and tailoring for the elite to handmade craft fabric made on traditional looms and the everyday clothing we buy in our favourite shops. It is leading the heritage revival, seeing the renaissance of old established mills and skills, and plays a part in the growing influence of sustainability and green attitudes to manufacture.

Fashion Textiles Now provides a complete guide to all types of fashion fabrics from the traditional tweeds to luxury fabrics containing lapis lazuli and diamonds to the newest hi-tech textiles as well as recycled and eco fabrics. Do you know whether your underwear is made of crab shells? Could you be wearing milk and coffee? Can your T-shirt stop you from getting skin cancer? With information on where each fabric comes from, how it is made and its properties, this book gives you the answers to these questions and more.

Whether you are a student or professional in fashion, textiles, design or merchandising, a costume designer or curator, this book is for you.

The Author: Janet Prescott is an expert on textiles and the fashion industry with over 25 years of experience writing for UK and European publications. She is the fabric and yarns editor of Twist, the international luxury fashion and fabrics magazine.

She has been interviewed about fashion on the BBC and judges student work at the Royal College of Art and at the international yarns fair, Pitti Immagine Filati in Florence.

Secondhand & Vintage New York

The culture of thriftiness runs deep in New Yorkers. The immigrants of the Lower East Side knew about hand-me-downs, mending and making-do, pushcarts and the rag-and-bone pickers; in 1921 the actress Fanny Brice sang about “Secondhand Rose” in the Ziegfeld Follies. Covering Manhattan plus Williamsburg and downtown Brooklyn, this new volume in our popular series provides an insider’s guide to the best shops and markets for almost anything you would want to buy. The first part of the book is organized into sections by type of object. All the key information you need to know is provided along with a brief description of the shop or stall. The second part of the book is organized by area. Each district has a useful map and a QR so that you can connect to interac-tive maps specially created for this book.

There are interviews with some of the shop owners and a special chapter devoted to New York’s hidden gems, as well as a list of places to grab a coffee or a bite to eat in each neighbourhood when you need a break.

Whether you live in New York or are visiting this exciting city, Secondhand & Vintage New York provides every-thing you need to know. It is not about buying cheaply, but about affording more!

The Author: Debra Johnston Cobb is a freelance writer and author. She has written extensively on textile trends for journals such as Knitting International, KnittingIndus-try.com and Textile Insight and is the co-author of Colour Forecasting for Fashion. In her spare time, Debra is an avid explorer of New York City’s markets and shops.

Exploring the Weather

We always complain about the weather no matter if it is hot and sunny or wet and cold. But weather can all too easily make the difference between plenty and famine, survival and death.

Technically weather refers to the condition of the at-mosphere in a particular place and time as opposed to climate, which refers to the overall tendency of an area. So while today the weather might be hot and sunny, the climatic tendency may actually be cool and wet. This fascinating book covers all aspects of the weather from the beauty of clouds, auroras and sunsets to the awe-inspiring and often terrifying tornadoes, typhoons and lightning storms that affect many parts of our Earth. The author guides you through the process of forecasting weather, what causes various weather conditions, the impact of solar flares, the threat of climate change and finally urges us to look again at the wonder of weather surrounding us.

Clearly written and extensively illustrated, this book is for students, for amateur meteorologists or for anyone who wants to learn more about the weather that affects us all.

The author: Brian Clegg is the best-selling author of nu-merous titles on popular science including Exploring the Universe, A Brief History of Infinity and Ecologic. He lectures widely and has given sell-out lectures at the Royal Institu-tion in London and at venues ranging from Oxford and Cambridge Universities to Cheltenham Festival of Science. He contributes to radio and television programs and is a popular speaker at schools.

In this book, the author surveys the key concepts and ideas that have reverberated throughout the art world in the last decade by presenting the artists who have created them. While highlighting established artists such as Gerhard Richter, the book also includes emerg-ing and mid-career artists. Artists such as Jeremy Wood who plots his movement across the globe through GPS tracking, Tatsuo Miyajima who does digital light displays and Eduardo Kac who does transgenic bio-art are among the international artists included. Often controversial, these artists push the boundaries of what would traditionally be considered art.

Affordable Contemporary Art is a handbook for people who want to know and understand more about buying and collecting art; who’d like to build their confidence when making choices about investing in individual pieces and building a collection. This book is also useful for people interested in working in galleries or auction houses, for artists, and for students of studio art.

The Belle Époque (Beautiful Era), which dates from the late nineteenth century to the start of World War I, was an incredible period of creative and scientific activity. Until his death in 1901 at the age of 36, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was one of its leading names. He exhibited with Vincent Van Gogh and was a friend of Oscar Wilde whom he met during his time in London. Producing literally thousands of artworks during his short life, the images that Toulouse-Lautrec created were evocative of the mood of that time.

10 Principles of ArchitectureRuth Slavid

Great buildings contain something that is impos-sible to define or pin down. But that greatness, in almost all cases, overlays the principles set out in this book. If all the principles are followed, you will avoid the pitfalls to which too many are subject.

This title presents an illuminating primer to the field that is accessible to students of architecture, archi-tects, architectural historians or anyone interested in the principles behind the buildings that surround them.

Engagingly written by journalist and critic, Robert Shore, this book provides the basic prin-ciples behind creating a successful advertise-ment. With clear explanations, illustrations and checklists for each chapter, the reader is guided through what goes into making an advertise-ment work.

Aimed at students of advertising, media and popular culture as well as anyone who is trying to create effective ads for their organisation or business.
