There is no better way to start the New Year than by reflecting on what has taken place over the last year andthat is by setting up new goals for the upcoming year. It is heartening to note that our Silver Jubilee year hasindeed been a year of success with the series of International Conferences and the grand success of ourmaiden graVITas‘09 - an International knowledge carnival as well as the annual Riviera ‘09- an Internationalcultural and sports fest to name just a few. The crowning glory can be said to be the prestigious ABETAccreditation that is yet another feather to our cap. Now, we must strive towards becoming on par with thetop universities of the world. Our goal should be from VIT to IIT to MIT.

I appreciate the strong ties that you have maintained with your Alma Mater and cherish the bond betweenyou and VIT University. You are our brand ambassadors and you always extended your valuable supportto the university which we treasure immensely.

VITAA ACTIVITIESS-JAM (SILVER JUBILEE ALUMNI MEET)

S-JAM (Silver Jubilee Alumni Meet), the annual alumni get-together celebration in the Silver Jubilee year of VIT Universitywas a huge success with around 3000 alumni with their familymembers from abroad and from all parts of the countryparticipating. This event was conducted on 25th & 26th Jan.2009 at VIT.

Reunion of the 1st batch (1988 batch passed out), visitto Golden temple, stage show by Mr. S.Ve.Sheker andtroupe were organized. VITAA Distinguished alumniawards and VITAA Scholarship awards were distributed.The former Principals, Registrars, Vice-Chancellors,senior faculty and staff members were honoured duringthe inaugural ceremony. This was followed by variouscultural programs, lunch and dinner. A Souvenir kit wasdistributed to VITAA members who attended thecelebration.

Our beloved Chancellor Dr.G.Viswanathan, Pro-ChancellorsMr.Sekar Viswanathan & Mr.G.V. Selvam and Core groupmembers of VITAA were present and former VITAA Officebearers also participated.

VITAA Distinguished Alumni Awards are given to the most successful alumni of our University, every year. VITAA SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

Every year the VIT Alumni Association provides scholarshipawards to the students based on Merit-cum financial need.

This year the award consistingof Rs.10,000 and a certificateeach were distributed on 26thJan. 2009 to the following finalyear students:- Ms. P. Kalaiselvi, M.Sc. Biotechnology- Mr. Santosh Kumar, B.Tech Chemical Engg. with dual degree (IT) and- Mr. J. Mohan babu, MCA.

VITAA BOOK BANK SCHEME

Books were collected from the alumni members and students towards theVITAA Book Bank Scheme. Our Pro-Chancellors Mr.Sekar Viswanathan &Mr. G.V.Selvam handed over the books to the librarian. Around 1150 bookswere donated to the library on 9th June 2009.

VITAA AUTOCAD TRAINING PROGRAMMEVITAA and School ofMechanical and BuildingSciences jointly organizeda 5 day AutoCAD trainingprogramme for Mechanical& Civil Engg. studentsfrom 17th to 21stAug.2009 in CDMM lab,VIT Campus. 73 studentshad participated andbenefited.Mr. Parthasarathy, certifiedAutoCAD trainerconducted the trainingsessions on the “Basics ofAutoCAD”.

The classes were conducted in two batches. Boththeory and hands-on training were provided.Certificates were distributed to the students on thesuccessful completion of the training.

“JOURNEY TO EXCELLENCE”, ONE DAY MOTIVATIONALTRAINING PROGRAMME

“Journey to Excellence”, a one - day motivational training programme forGovt. School teachers of Vellore district was organized on 6th Oct. 2009 in VITto help them achieve 100% results in 10th & 12th standards. ChancellorDr.G.Viswanathan inaugurated the programme.

Chief Guest Dr. Periyar Dhasan (retd. Prof. Pachaiyappa‘s College, Chennai)addressed the gathering. Seven parallel sessions (subject-wise) were conductedin the afternoon with information about the best practices and best teachingmethods shared by teachers who had achieved 100% results. Around 1300teachers participated and benefited.

VITAA TROPHY - T-20 CRICKET MATCHES( VITAA - VIT CHAPTER Vs VIT FACULTY & STAFF MEMBERS )

VITAA organized T-20 Cricket Matches for VITAA members (VIT Chapter) and VIT Faculty Staff members at VIT Stadiumon 19th October 2009. Totally, four teams participated and the players had participated with full enthusiasm. Two leaguematches were conducted and the winners of the league matches met in the final.

VITAA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETINGThe VITAA Core group Office bearers and the Executive Committee members participated in the VITAA half yearly ExecutiveCommittee meeting held on 29th Nov. 2009 in the University Interview room. VITAA future activities, updation of VITAA websiteand planning towards the successful conduct of the VITAA Day 2010 were discussed.

THREE DAYS WORKSHOP ON “BIOMEDICAL SIGNAL PROCESSING USING MATLAB”

A three - day workshop on “ Biomedical Signal Processing using MATLAB ” was organized by the Biomedical EngineeringDivision of SBST & VITAA. It was conducted byCardea Labs, a start up venture represented byMr. Abhinav, a VIT Alumnus. A total of fifty studentsregistered for the workshop which was held from11th to 13th December, 2009. Three experts fromCardea Labs and a professor from IIT Delhiconducted the workshop.

Dr. T. Lazar Mathew, Director, SBST & SR,inaugurated the workshop in the presence of Mr.Srikanth, Chairman-VITAA , Mr.V.G. Sridhar,Secretary General - VITAA, Mr. Aslam Sheriff,Core Committee Member - VITAA, Mr. KrishnaKumar, Alumni officer. The Guest of HonourMs.D. Malathi (1990 batch ECE alumni), Director- Sai’s BioSciences ResearchInstitute Pvt. Ltd.,

Chennai sponsored Rs.10,000/- for the event.The workshop had six technical sessions and one interactive session. Dr. S. Sudesh, Assoc.Prof. SBST (VITAA - VITChapter Convener), the organizing secretary of the workshop, thanked SBST and VITAA for their cooperation in makingthe workshop a grand success.

The team led by Mr.Subaji was the winner while the team led by Mr.Samuel Rajkumar was the runner-up. The other twoteams were led by Prof.Janardhan Reddy and Prof.Sudesh. Pro-Chancellor Mr.G.V. Selvam participated in the prizedistribution ceremony and presented the VITAA rolling trophy to the winners.

REUNION OF 1989 BATCH ALUMNI

Reflections 20: The Reunion of 1985-89 alumni with their family members was organized on 26 th & 27th Dec. ’09 in VITUniversity . Around 120 alumni and their families participated.

The meeting started with the address of the Chancellor and Pro-Chancellors. The alumni recalled with gratitude theservices of the faculty and staff who were part of the institution during 1985-89. This was followed by a tour of the VITcampus and a cultural programme. Sharing of memories happened all through the two -day event. Alumni membersgenerously contributed to the VIT Corpus fund. Boarding and lodging was arranged by the Alumni Office within campuswhich the alums enjoyed.

GUEST LECTURES ORGANISED BY VITAA

A guest lecture was jointly organised by VITAA and the School of Mechanical &Building Sciences for the SMBS faculty members on 3rd Aug.2009 in the Smartclass room, CDMM. Around fifteen faculty members participated.

Dr. Parivallal, a renowned trainer and Executive Director of The Training PeopleIndia (Bangalore) delivered guest lecture on “Stretch Yourself” (Overcome Hurdles inResearch - An Effective way of planning) guiding all the faculty members in thesuccessful completion of their research.

Around fourty VITAA UAE alumni with their family membersparticipated in the get-together of VITAA UAE Chapter held on17th April 2009 at Malgudi restaurant, Seaview Hotel, Bur Dubai,Dubai.

VITAA ATLANTA CHAPTER GET-TOGETHER

A get-together meeting of the VITAA Atlanta chapter members was held on 4th July 2009 in Georgia Tech Student CenterBuilding, Atlanta, GA 30322, USA. Chancellor Dr.G.Viswanathan participated in the event which was attended by fifteenVITAA members with their spouse and children. The future activities of VITAA Atlanta Chapter were discussed.

INAUGURATION OF VITAA GERMANY CHAPTER

The VITAA Germany Chapter inauguration was held on 31st May 2009in Steigenberger Hotel, Frankfurt, Germany. Around twenty chaptermembers participated along with Pro-ChancellorMr.Sekar Viswanathan and Ms.Sandhya Pentareddy.

VITAA Germany chapter was inaugurated to establish and strengthenour VITAA Chapter and to carryout VITAA activities in Germany by ourVITAA members. The annual VITAA activities of the VITAA Germanychapter were planned to help the local society and to contributetowards the growth and development of the current VIT students.

FALL ALUMNI MEET AND DIWALI GET-TOGETHER OF VITAA NEW JERSEY & NEW YORK CHAPTER

About 20 VITAA New Jersey & New York alumni along with their family memberscelebrated Diwali in Woodbridge Village Swim Club-club house, Avenel, NewJersey on Oct. 25th 2009.

A DVD presentation about VIT University and a power point presentation onvarious developments of VIT campus since 2000 was screened with emphasison recently constructed building, green campus initiative of our Chancellor andMoUs signed with foreign universities.

VITAA SINGAPORE CHAPTER MEETING

Around 15 VITAA Singapore Chapter members participated inthe Singapore Chapter meeting held on 14th Nov.’09 in RajRestaurant, Singapore. The members discussed the futureactivities of the Singapore chapter and the steps to be taken tostrengthen the VITAA activities in the region.

VITAA MELBOURNE CHAPTER INAUGURATIONThe inauguration and get-together meeting of the VITAA Melbourne chapter was held on 24th Sept. 2009 in Moti Mahal,Melbourne, Australia. Our Vice-Chancellor Dr.D.P.Kothari & 10 VITAA Melbourne members with their family participated.

Steps towards contributing to the alma mater were discussed. A quiz programon VIT with pictures taken by Raj and Venkatesh during their VIT visit (in themonth of Sept. & Oct.’09) was conducted and the members had to guess whatplace /building it was (in VIT).

Prizes were distributed for the right answers. Members shared their mostmemorable experiences they had during their life in VEC / VIT. They alsodiscussed the plans for the future VITAA NJ/NY meetings and decided to meetatleast twice a year and to conduct a picnic or cultural outing inNew York Metropolitan area.

VITAA BANGALORE CHAPTER MEETING

Around 180 Bangalore based alumni members gathered for the VITAA Bangalore Chapter meeting on 22nd Nov. 2009 inThe Capitol Hotel, Bangalore.

Chancellor Dr.G.Viswanathan, Pro - Chancellor Mr. Sekar Viswanathan and VITAA Office bearers participated in themeeting and addressed the gathering. Entertainment and games were organized and prizes awarded to the winners.

Umanath (Vizhiyan) (2001 EEE & 2004 M.Tech ECE) has written his second book in Tamil.The book titled “Kaala Payanigal / Ore Oru Oorilae” comprises two novels targeted at children.The first novel “Kaala Payanigal” is about four kids travelling to three eras and learning anddiscovering the hardship of success and life’s secrets. In the course of the journey, they have fun,joy and thrill. The second novel also revolves around four kids taking a journey to a hill top temple.(Note: This story is based on places around VIT, the railway track and the small hill behind thehostels).The book was released on 20th Dec. ‘09 in Chennai.

For the 6th Successive year, VITAA Career Cell organised aseries of sessions for the Pre-Final Year students of Schoolof Mechanical and Building sciences titled “Planning aheadfor Campus Interview” from 14th March 2009.The sessionsincluded SWOT analysis, Motivational Talks, Tips for PersonalInterview, Resume writing, group discussions and MockInterviews. Alumni Sathish Rajamani, Shankar Gokule,S.Harish, Srinath, Sravan and Ashutosh participated in thesesessions and shared their experiences with the students.Industry expert Mr Sharfass J also participated along withthe Alumni. Dr. Saravanan Pichiah, 2003 M.Tech., Environment Engineering received his Doctoral Degree in Chemical Engineeringfrom IIT, Guwahati, Assam in 2008 and is currently working as Adiunkt (Assistant Professor), Department of ChemicalTechnology, Politechnika, Gdanska, Poland.

It was held on 13th March 2009 atBangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad. Our women alumniparticipated. Highly successful professional women from thetechnology industry shared their knowledge, experiences andinsights to help empower more women to achieve their goals

- Bangalore alumni participated in the Smart Techie’s “StartupCity Convention” at Bangalore on 6th June 2009. Theparticipants could know the building of companies likeRediff.com, Naukri.com and Tejas Networks as their founderscame and shared their journey. The event also had a range ofinspirational and informative seminars covering everything fromCloud Computing to Monetizing Applications from leadersof Amazon.com, Sun Microsystems and Forum Nokia.

VIT announces FFCSTM ( Fully Flexible Credit Systems)

As part of it’s continuous improvement in providing qualityeducation, VIT University has taken the next incredible stepby introducing the Fully Flexible Credit System (FFCS)TM

into its academic curriculum. Under FFCSTM, eachProgramme will have baskets of courses classified underUniversity Core, University Electives, Programme Core andProgramme Electives. As per the communication from NASSCOM, a change in therecruitment pattern has been followed across the country.Accordingly, PAT Centre decided to invite core companies andsoftware companies that offer a pay package of more than 4lakhs per annum for the first phase of campus placements for2010 passing out batch.

Core companies like Indian Oil, Ashok Leyland, TCE, Unitek, NI,Telcon, Schneider Electric visited VIT and recruited students fromthe core branches. Indian Oil offered a highest package of more

than 7 lakhs per annumand selected 7 students.

Reputed softwarecompanies like Amazon,SAP Labs, VM Ware,Commvault, GEHealthcare, Athena, Citrix,Honeywell, ebay, CapitalIQ, Cisco Systems whichoffered more than 5 lakhsfor the campus recruitsvisited VIT and recruitedour students. As on 20th

December 2009, 31companies haveconducted campusrecruitments and haverecruited 186 students of2010 passing out batch.

PAT Centre has organized training programs for the final yearstudents with outside professional trainers.

Ericsson signed an MoU with VIT in offering a certification programcalled ‘EXCEL’ on 24th September 2009. Ericsson shortlisted 25of our final year B.Tech (ECE) students to undergo thiscertification program.

PAT Centre signed an MoU with Accenture for conducting‘Communication Excellence Course’ for B.Tech.(Mechanical)students which is a regular “credit course”.

Bosch invited 30 of our final year B.Tech (ECE) students for anevent named ‘On track-2’ at Bangalore on 10th October 2009.

PAT Centre also arranged technical lectures from reputedcompanies like Logica, Infosys and Bosch during graVITas ’09.

Wipro conducted ‘Let sparks fly’ workshop for the final year VITstudents on 11th September 2009 at VIT.

Indian Armed Force and Indian Navy had VIT as nodal centre fortheir selection process. Students from VIT and other neighbouringcolleges participated in the selection process

DECADE” AWARD BY K.G. FOUNDATION - K.G. HOSPITAL, COIMBATORE

Chancellor Dr.G.Viswanathan was honoured with the “Dynamic Indian of theDecade” Award by K.G. Foundation – K.G. Hospital, Coimbatore on 15thFebruary 2009. The foundation gave the award to those who had madeoutstanding contribution in their chosen field and created an opportunity forthe younger generation, to become role models. The award receipients hadworked hard , had vision and made a difference in the lives of the countrymen.

24th ANNUAL CONVOCATIONThe Annual Convocation of VIT was held on 1st August 2009 at VIT University campus. Dr. Venu Srinivasan, CMD, TVSMotors & President, CII delivered the convocation address and distributed degrees to the 46 students who won goldmedals. A total of 3429 candidates including 23 Ph.Ds received their degrees at the convocation.

RIVIERA 2009Riviera ‘09 - the four-day internationalsports and cultural fest of the VIT Univer-sity was held between 30 January and2 February, 2009. Events such as ‘Stylecheck’, Antakshari, ‘Cross talk Hindi’,‘What’s the good word’ filtered out to bethe best of the lot. Other competitions like‘Sketch me if you can’, ‘Radio jockey’,‘Kryptography’ and ‘Head bangers kall’ gotthe grey cells going.

The Assistant Director General of Police,Tamilnadu Uniformed Service RecruitmentBoard, Mr.K.Rajendran, inaugurated thefest. Mr. Surya noted film artist distrib-uted the prizes to winners of the sportsand cultural events on 2nd Feb.`09.

Dr. G. VISWANATHAN is EPSI President

Chancellor Dr.G. Viswanathan was nominated the President of the Education Promotion Society for India (EPSI). While Pro-Chancellor Mr.Sekar Viswanathan was nominated a member, Foreign Education Bill Committee of EPSI.EPSI is a national chamber which has the mandate of universities and institutions across the country and is activelyinvolved in policy advocacy for the educational sector. Speaking after assuming office at a function in Delhi onDecember 23. Dr. G. Viswanathan said the country needed to position itself effectively in the education sector and formpolicies to ensure quality. While taking pride in VIT becoming the first ABET-accredited University, he urged all universitiesto come forward for accreditation which will enable them to deliver education qualitatively and purposefully

VIT STUDENTS BAG THE ASHOKA GENV-MTV AWARDS!

VIT students Shailesh Upadhyay and Ujala Shanker, mentored by Ms. SandhyaPentareddy (1990 ECE Alumni ) bagged the prestigious Ashoka GenV awards.Ashoka GenV in collaboration with MTV supports youth in undertaking socialventures to address global challenges. The Tractor-Factor venture by Shaileshand Ujala has won two awards – Environment 2009 Venture award and Invention2009 Venture award. The team has also been rewarded a grant of $1000. Inthe past, the team had successfully implemented their idea in 17 homes inGuerera village near Varanasi, to reduce pollution and provide light to villages.Their aim is to implement this solution in 4 more villages this year and createa lasting venture for future.

UNIVERSITY DAY 2009

H.E. Mr. Zhang Yan, Chinese Ambassador to India inaugurated the ChineseLanguage Centre and unveiled a bust of Chinese philosopher Confuciusand participated in the University Day 2009 held on 6th April 2009 at VITUniversity. He gave the awards to rank-holders and meritorious studentsand merit scholarships to eligible students and said that the VITUniversity has today become an ideal place for students in India to learnthe Chinese language and culture thanks to the establishment of the firstChinese Language Centre.

INAUGURATION OF SUU KYI BLOCK LADIES HOSTEL & UNVEILING OF PERIYAR E.V.R.STATUE

Finance Minister of Govt. of Tamil Nadu Hon’ble Thiru. K. Anbazhaganinaugurated the Suu Kyi block of the ladies hostel in VIT University campus on8th April 2009. It is named after Aung San Suu Kyi, the pro-democratic activistwho has been detained by the military regime in Myanmar for decades. TheRs.23 crore building is a tribute to her fight to establish democracy in hercountry. A statue of Thanthai Periyar EVR was also unveiled at the function.The book titled, “Naan Kanda Anna”, penned by one of Anna’s disciples,Mr. M.S.Venkatachalam, was also released.

UGC HONOURS VIT UNIVERSITY’S VICE CHANCELLOR

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has bestowed the UGC National Swami Pranavananda Saraswati Award for2005 on Dr.D.P. Kothari, Vice Chancellor of VIT University in recognition of his outstanding scholarly contribution. Theaward carries a citation and a cash component of Rs.50,000. Dr. Kothari has published 611 research papers in variousnational and international journals and conferences, guided 27 Ph.Ds and 55 M.Tech. students, and authored 20 books inPower Systems and other allied areas.

ENGINEERS DAY - VISIT OF Mr. ANDREW T. SIMKIN, U.S. CONSUL GENERAL, CHENNAI

Mr. Andrew T.Simkin, US Consul General, Chennai, distributed meritcertificates and free education scholarships to 58 students under the‘Support the Advancement of Rural Students’ (STARS) project launchedby VIT during Engineers Day Celebration held on 15th Sept. 09 in VIT.Chancellor Dr.G.Viswanathan said that STARS project introduced by theuniversity had broken barriers of reservation system. The project had offeredfree education at VIT to 58 student toppers from rural areas from all thedistricts of the state, he said and added that 38 of them were first generationlearners in the family with acute poverty conditions.

graVITas ‘09, a three day tech and biz fest (11-13th September 2009) organised in commemoration of her Silver Jubilee, wasone of a kind carnival. graVITas will blossom as an annual event attracting participants from every part of India and abroad.The “VIT-MUN ‘09” was the queen of all events. This model United Nations conference was an awakening of the reformersin students.

The other highlight of graVITas was “Industrial Problem Solving” where students were challenged by TVS, Cognizant andVestas, to solve real-world problems efficiently. Adding another feather to this crowning event was “Knowledge Platform”,which offered a series of techno-management lectures by CEO’s and Vice Presidents of leading global industries. The starfilled night reverberated with the voice of Kailash Kher, crooning to some of his foot-tapping music that has broken barriersin the Indian music industry.

VIT-TECHNOLOGY BUSINESS INCUBATOR (TBI)

VIT-Technology Business Incubator is a joint initiative between VIT and the Department of Science and Technology,Government of India. The mandate is to promote technology-based start up ventures. VIT-Technology Business Incubator has been selected for the National Award for the year 2008 by the NationalScience and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB) division of Department of Science & Technology,Govt. of India, New Delhi.

CHANCELLOR HONOURED WITH A Ph.D. BY WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY, USAWest Virginia University (WVU), a government funded university established in 1867, honoured Chancellor with a HonouraryDoctorate Degree during its convocation held on 15th May 2009. He is the first Asian to receive this honour from WVU.

This honour was bestowed upon him for having attained international pre-eminence in the field of education, especiallyfor founding VIT University and making it a leading University in India within a short span of 25 years.

WVU’s decision followed an extensive review by their Honourary Degree Committee, followed by reviews and approvalsby theUniversity Administration, their faculty senate, and the West Virginia University Board of Governors

walking down the huge building“Technology Tower” and attendingthelecture in B-School, settlingdown in AC food court with all myfr iends and making commentslooking around, sitting in the backbench and ensuring my presence hardly felt duringcase study discussions, putting a big question markon face when French was taught, rubbing awaytears off my cheeks when ‘Scholar ship’ wasannounced for my best performance in 2nd term,collapsing down during convocation when realizedthat I missed gold medal with just 2%..... all theseare still fresh in my thoughts and bring a smile onmy face when I read any achievement of my VIT,and then I proudly say…Yes, I am a VITian.
