We would like to take this opportunity to introduce our organisation, The Visual Learning Company.Our team along with The Educational Advisory Group are committed to developing a nationwideresource, which will help increase standards in physical education, encourage and motivate youngpeople through the use of visual learning. The resources produced will provide high qualityprofessional development for PESS professionals.

To structure a meaningful solution and develop a range of resources and services that would beaccepted in both the education and sporting sectors we formed a group of advisors, with the followingkey objectives.

Do You Need Ideas For Teaching Dance?

o The Dance DVD has I different dance sequences. The Key Stage 1routines include, Come Out To Play, Mr Jelly and Mr Strong, Ananse andThe Balloon Dance. The Key Stage 2 sequences are Machines, House ofFun, Tudor Dance and Gangs.

. The resource will support you teach Dance as it covers key ideas of howto use different actions and body parts. The performances showinterpretations of different stimulus and how dance can communicateideas, moods and feelings.

. Sequences are performed at varying speeds as pupils' mirror and matchwith contrast and flow of movement.

. In the clips pupils show space, direction and stil lness. Pathways andlevels are explored to show different dynamics and relationships to dancestyles and techniques.

How Will The Visual Learning Resources Supportand Help Me Teach High Quality PE?

The Visual Learning resources have been produced to allow teachers and pupils toget a clearer understanding of what is required. The activities shown are an exampleof good practice and allow teachers and pupils to focus on what is needed to achievethe core task. The resources do not show the activities being performed by an entireclass as research shows that having too much to focus on will not help adults orchildren retain the information needed to understand the activity.

This slide highlights what the child hasachieved. Helping teachers identiff key skillsthey should look for when teaching PE. Thekey points also show whether the skill is'Acquiring and Developing' or'Selecting andApplying.'

The Edu-Clip Library

At the end of the DVD the clips are all repeated withoutcommentary. To either be used as a refresher forteachers or to use with children to show them what theyare going to achieve in PE.

This DVD resource will have a wealth of information about how to storeand safely move apparatus. There will be tips on planning sensiblelayouts and how to use gym equipment effectively. The DVD will be afantastic teacher resource and also can be used to show and preparechildren with what they will be doing during PE.

How To Use Visual Learninq Resources During PE?

As well as using the resources as a teacher aid, you can use theresources during your PE lessons and over the development of a coretask. There are 3 steps to using the Visual Learning resources within aPE session.

Step 1 - watch the clip so that yourchildren will start to get anunderstanding of the activity andgain confidence in what they aretrying to achieve. At this point youcan highlight key movements andskil ls to develop high quality PE.

Step 2 - allow your children to copy whatthey have seen to identify if they havefully understood the activity. This is agreat opportunity to compare anddiscuss how children can improve anddevelop their activity.

Step 3 - discuss with your childrenhow to develop the activity. Helpthem identify different movementsand skills that can be used. Letthem observe each other'sactivities and highlight strengths,weaknesses and how they canprogress.

These resources are also a great way to develop Assessment forLearning (AfL). Children can visualise and identify how they can improve.You can show the resources to your pupils at the beginning, in themiddle and at the end of a core task highlighting their development.

ern terminology we might call this VAK,Visual,Auditory and Kinaesthetic learning. In primaryphysical education the seeing part has oftenbeen the problem in terms of learning andapplying physical skil ls - but not any more,thanks to an innovation from MotionCoach.

Primary Vision is what all primary schoolsneed.The abil ity to capture, show and analysepupils moving makes learning exciting, bring-ing it to l i fe. Pupils can now see what they aredoing dur ing movement sequences or gamesand most importantly use this information(learning) to make improvements in the quali-ty of their movements or decisions. The lmportance Of Learning To SwimThe QCDA states that by Key Stage 2 childrenshould swim unaided for a sustained period of timeover a distance of at least 25 meters. Learning toswim can be very daunting for a young person,which is why it is important that we give children allthe help and support to feel confident in the water.

There are so many benefits from learning to swim.Swimming is an excellent form of exercise for peopleof all ages. Exercise experts say that swimming onemile is the equivalent of running four. Overall,swimming can be used for exercise, fun, and evenlifesaving. Water safety is incredibly importantchildren and adults must learn to respect water andunderstand what to do to keep a float. Themovements that are done during swimming will bevery useful for their body. They will feel the freedomof moving and develop breathing techniques underthe water.

The following are tips on how to make learning toswim an enjoyable experience:

o Don't hurry children learning to swim,encourage but don't pressure them.

. Get into the water slowly. Don't start out in thedeep end.

. Show them the basics of swimming;encourage the child to kick their legs andpaddle with their arms.

o Show them how to float. Floating is a greatway to learn to feel comfortable in water andis also a useful safety technique.

o When they are ready, you should activelyencourage them to start swimming on theirown.

Learning to swim is one of the big milestones forchildren, parents and their teachers. Each child isdifferent and will learn to swim in their own time.Always supervise children in the water even if theyare confident you don't know when they may get intodanger. Trusting water and learning to swim is agradual process and doesn't happen all at once. Youwill always need to be aware of all your children'sneeds.

Most of all make sure children have fun in the waterand build their confidence. Introduce engaginggames that will help them develop their skills in thewater. By helping young people learn to swim youare giving them a life skill they will use for manyyears to come.

o The Swimming Activities & Water Safety DVD has 20 clips of childrenperforming the core tasks.

o The resource will help you teach Swimming as it covers key skills such asmoving safely through the water, using different speeds and distances,floating and gliding in the water.

o In the clips children use coordinated arm and leg actions to swim. Thereare also clips of the swimming strokes - front crawl, breaststroke,backstroke and butterfly.

o The clips cover different types of activities, pair and group work. Theydemonstrate children working safely and showing an awareness of thosearound them.

o The resource includes important aspects of water safety and how you canbuild confidence with your children and encourage them to have fun inthe water.

Learning should never be a mystery tour and now thanks to a unique sef ofresources pupils and teachers alike are able fo see what they are trying toachieve in PE lessons.

The National Curriculum sets out in writing what pupils should learn and what theyshould know, understand and be able to do at set points in their learning journey. ButPE and sport are such visual activities, performed often in split seconds. Now agroup of LocalAuthorities are teaming up with The Visual Learning Company tochange the way we look at the learning.

Nowthanks to this partnership all schools can accesssupport material to ensure that their pupilsexperience a planned and magical learningjourney where all participants have a clearerunderstanding of what they are trying to achieve.

Norfolk and 5 other local authorities, have been working in partnership to bringnational curriculum PE to life through DVD footage and explanations of the standardsexpected. Norfolk, Barnet, Nottingham, Bedfordshire, Leeds and Hertfordshire havebeen working with The Visual Learning Company to produce a series of DVD's whichexemplify the national curriculum through the core tasks planned by QCA. Theseeasy to use resources are starting to make a significant difference to the level of taskunderstanding in pupils and teachers alike. Driven by an absolute belief andconviction that these DVD's will massively impact on standards, these localauthorities have worked with The Visual LearningCompany to produce DVD's for Gymnastics,Dance, Games at KS1 and2.

Norfolk were involved in a busy filming schedulein early May 2008 with The Visual LearningCompany for Athletics and Outdoor AdventureActivities involving five Norfolk schools.Hertfordshire also confirmed their filmingschedule with The Visual Learning Company toproduce a much-needed Swimming DVD. This now means that as of July 2008,teachers and pupils will be able to access clear exemplification materialto helpfacilitate greater levels of understanding and attainment in all six areas of activity laidout in the programme of study for key stage 1 and 2.

This approach is supported by the 10 High Quality Outcomes for PE which recognisethe need for pupils to know and understand what they are trying to achieve.

By using these resources schools will be trying to ensure that all pupils in the primaryphase know and understand what they are trying to do. This leads to greater levels ofmotivation, commitment and a desire to improve. Assessment for Leaining (AfL) isfacilitated through understanding what pupils of this age should know, understandand be able to do through the areas of activity laid out in the national curriculum.

The Games DVD's for example can allow pupils touse the interactive whiteboards in their classroomsto look at tactics, strategies and principles of playjust like they would see on coverage by Sky or ITVSport. Using footage teachers can confirm theirunderstanding of the learning tasks and then sharethis visually with the pupils. Cameras where to start - there are big ones, littleones, movie cameras, still cameras, ones that flipand ones that you can make calls on! Whatevercamera device you are using, it is important toengage your pupils with the power of VisualLearning.

5 Basfc Sfeps - How To Get GoodFootage And Stills?

I - Understand what you want to capture. At firstyou may use your camera to collect as many imagesas possible. However once you start to put togethera selection of clips it will be important to identify themissing areas. You can then start to build a librarythat will be really worthwhile and will help you andyour children support the understanding of highquality PE.

2 - Before capturing visual images consider whatyou will need to prepare before you start. Do youneed to charge batteries? Do you have tripods andcables needed to capture footage? Do you knowwhere you will position the camera to obtain the bestfootage? All these areas will need to be consideredbefore you start filming or taking pictures.

3 - ldentify what level you need to capture yourvisual images. When taking stil ls the rule of thumb istaking shots at eye level, this creates a morefocused image. However if you are videoing a groupof children doing an invasion game height will bevery powerful to access each child's awareness ofspace and movement.

4 Great light produces great visuals, alwaysconsider where the sun is, if possible it should bebehind you as if not your visuals will have shadow.

5 - T|re most important thing is give it a go andreview what you have done and learn what worksbest for you. Empower your children to use thetechnology as they may capture footage you hadnever imagined or thought about.

These are 5 basic steps to consider when usingcamera equipment. However most of all keep tryingto engage your pupils with using cameras andtechnology at all times you never know when youmay get the perfect image that can be used yearafter year to inspire pupils with PE and sport.

Engage Your Pupil ln PE -{,lse Cameras!Whether you allow pupils to use mobiles or youidentify the perfect image and the only piece ofequipment to hand is your mobile, the best thing todo is set your mobile phone to the correct setting.When using mobile phones set your camera to thehighest resolution setting, this will give you the bestquality pictures. This may not seem obvious on yourphone, however when you download your imagesand want to use them for posters or wall displays youwill see the difference.

Once you have put together a number of clips andstills it is vital you consider how you will store yourvisual images. Why, I hear you ask? This is becauseto really maximise the benefits of visual learning andthe clips you have collected you want to be able touse them year after year to inspire and engagepupils. To do this you will need a simple way ofstoring your images, whether it is by year group orsports. You will want easy access to identify the clipsyou need. By focusing and identifying ways to storefootage you will save valuable time when preparinglessons.

The power of using cameras and encouraging visuallearning is that it speeds up the learning process andhelps communicate the message quicker. Yourpupils can use clips and still images to compare andcontrast key actions and highlight strengths andweaknesses. The images will help your pupilsanalyse and evaluate their development andencourage them to improve their standards andidentify and assess their progress as they learn.

The most important message for using cameras isthat you have fun and use them to support learningin PE!
