Indexical Gesture •  Indexical gestures draw

attention to something in the setting in which they are produced. That relation to the setting is what makes the gesture indexical. In this example, the flight instructor says “Don’t rely on just that.” while pointing to a navigation display. Indexical gestures are typically coupled to the environment.

Iconic Gestures

These gestures are iconic because the form of the gesture is similar to the thing the gesture refers to. The “max power” gesture models pushing the thrust lever forward. The “climb” gesture models pulling back on the control yoke. Iconic gestures may be coupled to the environment, as these are, or they may be free-standing.

“max power “climb

Gesture Emblem

The OK gesture is a gesture emblems. it is neither iconic nor indexical. Emblems are usually not environmentally coupled.
