From the Desk of Father Michael

As I mentioned in my homily last weekend, the start of the holy season of Lent is later than usual this year. Typically, the season of Lent has already begun in the middle of February and we are at the halfway point by now of our 40-day pilgrimage of prayer, fasting, and almsgiv-ing. But nevertheless, as we enter into the 1st Sunday of Lent, it is customary for our catechumens and candidates who are preparing for the Easter sacraments to be sent and recognized as the Elect. This Sunday, at the 8am Mass (Verboort), 9:15am Mass (North Plains), and 10:30am Mass (Roy), Bishop Steiner will celebrate the Rite of Election with our the following: [Verboort] Deborah Baker, Dylan Smith, Roxanne Smith, Jamie Williams, [North Plains] Mark Phillips, and [Roy] Kristen Duyck, Caih Peters, Karen Schmidlin. The Rite of Election is to acknowledge that in their journey of faith through the RCIA process they have discerned God’s call with the help of the godparent/sponsor to begin the final prepa-ration for full communion. In a sense, they are called appropriately, the “Elect” because God has chosen them and in turn they are responding with their “yes”. In this beautiful ritual that will be celebrated, what stands out in my mind has always been when the Bishop poses his question, it is to the godparent/sponsor and not the catechumen or candidate itself. The reason for this is to focus upon receiving the recognition and acknowledge from the godparent/sponsor of the great growth that the catechumen and candi-date have experienced. It is one thing to be aware that you have grown spiritually, physically, or emotionally, but it is another thing to have a person acknowledge one’s growth, as it is very affirming. I invite you to pray for our newly Elect as the near the Easter Sacraments they will constantly be showered with the love and support of knowing God has called each and everyone by name to be in full communion with Him. Have a Blessed Lenten Week! ~Fr. Michael

Picks of the Month Fr. Michael’s Pick: In Archbishop Sample’s Len-ten message to the priests, he encouraged us to rec-ommend during Lent the Augustine Institute Series entitled, “Forgiven.” In his words, “the Forgiven series focuses on the beauty of the sacrament of Reconciliation, and is thus especially relevant to those key Lenten themes of conversion, forgiveness, and mercy.” So my pick is Archbishop Sample’s pick! Fr. Juan Jose’s Pick: TBD If you want to enjoy this FREE Catholic resource, please go online to www.formed.org and select “Enter code” link. Input the Parish Code: HWNN8P and create your own personal log-in and password.
