Pontifical Good Friday Collection

to Support Christians in the Holy Land

Dear Brothers and Sisters:

Every year on Good Friday, a collection is taken up in

the Diocese of Joliet and in parishes around the world to

support the people and places of the Holy Land. The Fran-

ciscans of the Custody of the Holy Land have the

unique responsibility of caring for the Holy Places as well

as caring for the Christians living in the Holy Land.

The Good Friday Collection is applied to these pro-

grams below.

Faith, Memory & Culture – The Holy Places || Holy

Land Franciscans staff and maintain the Holy places and

shrines. This enables those who live in the Holy Land and

those who visit to deepen their faith and their spiritual and

cultural connection to Salvation history.

Social Support to Christians in the Holy Land || In

order to assist Christians to remain in the Holy Land, in-

cluding the poor and young couples, the Custody builds

thousands of residential units. Additionally, they build sen-

ior care facilities. Medical assistance is provided for the

needy.

Educational & Scientific Activities || The Franciscans

operate and support schools open to all, regardless of reli-

gion or nationality. They provide scholarships for local

students and those studying to become Franciscan priests

or brothers. Finally, Franciscan archaeologists pursue on-

going research at the Holy Places discovering historical

artifacts.

Pastoral Activities || The Franciscans provide pasto-

ral care in 29 parishes in the Holy Land offering Worship,

Christian Formation, youth and family programs.

Liturgical, Ecumenical and Communications Pro-

grams || The Franciscan Media Center tells the story of

the Holy Land through multimedia distributed throughout

the world in more than seven languages. The friars organ-

ize Liturgical Celebrations for the local Christians and Pil-

grims and share with other Christian communities in the

Holy Land in ongoing Ecumenical cooperation.

Please be generous this Good Friday, March 25. Chris-

tians, along with all of the clergy and religious who serve

in the Holy Land, will deeply appreciate our prayers and

financial help.

Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon

Bishop of Joliet

March 13, 2016

Dear Parish Family,

I am happy to announce that Bishop Conlon has as-

signed the next Pastor of Visitation Parish. Our next pastor

will be Fr. Greg Skowron. He will begin his assignment as

Pastor of Visitation on June 22, 2016. Currently Fr. Greg

Skowron is Pastor of St. Anthony Church in Frankfort.

Fr. Greg Skowron was born in Poland on September 17,

1963, and ordained a Priest in 1989. After serving a parish

in Poland for two years, he felt called to serve in the mis-

sions in the Philippines. To prepare, he studied English for

one year, and then left for the Philippines where he served

in the missions for some time. On November 3, 2001, Fr.

Skowron came to the United States and began to serve in

the Diocese of Joliet. While seeking incarnation into the

Diocese, Fr. Skowron was assigned to assist the Pastor of

St. Andrew Parish in Romeoville, and then of St. Mary

Parish in West Chicago. After being incarnated into the

Diocese of Joliet, Father was named Pastor of St. Anthony

in Frankfort where he has served since June of 2008.

Transitions have become a part of priestly ministry and

parish life. They allow for new gifts to be brought forward

for both the community and for the priest. New insights are

found, and the grace of God oversees it all. Still, transitions

and changes are not easy, so please pray for God’s care to

be upon both the priests and the communities who will be

receiving new leadership this June.

God Bless,

Fr. Scott Huggins

VISITATION, ELMHURST, IL MARCH 20, 2016

Faithful Citizenship (March 20, 2016)

Part I of the U.S. Bishops document, “Faithful Citizenship”, sets forth four major principles of the Catholic social tra-dition: 1) the dignity of the human person; 2) subsidiarity; 3) the common good; 4) and solidarity. Last week we dis-cussed #3 and ended with some of Pope Francis words about care for the environment. Let’s finish that thought and then move on to principle #4.

In our current divisive political climate, care for the environment has become especially politicized. Conservatives accuse liberals of “worshiping” the environment and demanding unrealistic safeguards which serve only to squelch human flourishing. Liberals accuse conservatives of caring only for short-term economic advancement, without concern for the long-term health of our planet and the lives of future generations. Catholic social teaching provides a way through this ideological impasse, through its doctrine of creation. In Genesis 1, God is portrayed as a kind of divine art-ist, creating the world in stages, over the course of seven “days”. At the end of each day, God looks at what he has cre-ated and calls it “good” (actually the Hebrew word tov is better translated as “beautiful”). This process culminates with God creating man and woman in the divine image. While all that God creates is “good” and in some way reflects the goodness of the Creator, it is human beings who image the divine in a unique way. God gives the man and woman “dominion” over creation, and tells them: “Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it.”

Unfortunately, this divine mandate has often been interpreted to mean that God has given creation to us in order to use as we see fit, as if creation only has value through what it does for us. But the beauty and value of the natural world does not come from what it does for us, but rather because it comes from the hands of God. The word “dominion” comes from the Latin word for “Lord” (domine, as in anno domine, “the year of our Lord”). So our care for creation is to reflect the “Lordship” of God. The problem is that we tend to equate lordship with notions of power, domi-nation, and control, but if we take a careful look at the way in which God exercises his Lordship in the Bible, we find quite the opposite. God does not dominate and control creation for his own pleasure, but rather he loves it into being, gently holding it in existence at each moment and yet respecting its own natural laws and processes. And Jesus, as God in human flesh, gives us the clearest picture of Lordship when he says: “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but rather to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” So we, as followers of Jesus, are to be loving stewards of God’s creation, rather than dominating masters.

Let’s move on to principle #4: solidarity. In the midst of an American culture which tends to overemphasize the rights of the individual, and tends to undervalue the notion of the “common good”, the bishops remind us: “We are one hu-man family, whatever our national, racial, ethnic, economic, and ideological differences. We are our brothers’ and sis-ters’ keepers, wherever they may be. Loving our neighbor has global dimensions and requires us to eradicate racism and address the extreme poverty and disease plaguing so much of the world. Solidarity also includes the Scriptural call to welcome the stranger among us—including immigrants seeking work, a safe home, education for their children, and a decent life for their families.” This theme of solidarity reminds us that our Catholic notion of the “common good” is not restricted to our own national boundaries, but rather it stretches us to embrace a truly global perspective.

As Americans we feel a sense of responsibility to use our vast economic and military power to not only advance our own interests, but to work for the common good of all people. In this noble goal, the temptation is to turn too easily to the use of military force, as the U.S. bishops remind U.S.: “In light of the Gospel’s invitation to be peacemakers, our commitment to solidarity with our neighbors—at home and abroad—also demands that we promote peace and pursue justice in a world marred by terrible violence and conflict. Decisions on the use of force should be guided by traditional moral criteria and undertaken only as a last resort. As Pope Paul VI taught: “If you want peace, work for justice.”

A key theme of Catholic social teaching related to solidarity is the preferential option for the poor and vulnerable. Paragraph 53 of Faithful Citizenship explains: “While the common good embraces all, those who are weak, vulnerable, and most in need deserve preferential concern. A basic moral test for our society is how we treat the most vulnerable in our midst. In a society marred by deepening disparities between rich and poor, Scripture gives us the story of the Last Judgment (Mt 25:31-46) and reminds us that we will be judged by our response to the ‘least among us.’ The Cate-chism explains: ‘Those who are oppressed by poverty are the object of a preferential love on the part of the Church which, since her origin and in spite of the failings of many of her members, has not ceased to work for their relief, de-fense, and liberation.’” The role of the Church is not only to provide direct care and service to those on the margins, but to advocate and ensure that their voices are heard and contribute to the ongoing American project of securing “liberty and justice for all”.

Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord

It’s a long Mass today. Palms and Passion all rolled into one. We rejoice and we become somber as we recall some of the most important events of our faith. Remember back in January when we read from the very beginning of Luke’s Gospel. This is what he said: “Since many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as those who were eyewitnesses from the be-ginning and ministers of the word have handed them down to us, I too have decided, after investigating everything accurate-ly anew, to write it down in an orderly sequence for you” (Lk 1:1-3).

Luke’s orderly account has Jesus slowly making his jour-ney to Jerusalem. Today’s Mass brings that journey to an end, at least as far as our reading of Luke is concerned. To the ac-claim of crowds, Jesus enters the city on a colt. But his jour-ney eventually leads him to the Mount of Olives and then to Golgotha and finally to a rock-hewn tomb. We know that this is not the end of the story. There are still other events to be fulfilled. But we will have to wait until we get to Pentecost for that final chapter of Luke’s narrative.

Like the Mass this weekend, our own journey through life can have its ups and downs. We can be filled with joy one moment and saddled with grief at another. Our Lord and Sav-ior experienced the same. As a human person like us he had joyous times and sad ones as well. The same holds true for those eyewitnesses who Luke speaks of in the introduction to his Gospel. The ones who were with Jesus from the beginning also knew both sorrow and joy. They persisted in the faith, handing down the story of Christ to our day. And in our joys and in our sorrows we pass on the faith as well.

Become a Parish Pastoral Council Member

Parish Pastoral Council members serve for a three-year term, and a discernment process by the current council de-cides new members. The discernment of new council members is based on the following criteria:

Those who are active members of Visitation Parish, and are in touch with the life and needs of the parish

Those who demonstrate good leadership qualities. Those who have the time and willingness to attend

council meetings. No immediate family members can serve on the council

at the same time. Age is not a factor in membership, ability is. If you would like more information on the Parish Pasto-

ral Council, or if you would like to be considered to serve on the council or know another Visitation parishioner who would make a good council member, please contact the parish office or one of the current Parish Pastoral Council members by April 7. the Visitation Parish Convent at 799 S. York Road, is open every

Sunday from 9:00 A.M. until 1:30 P.M.

Over 700 statues, icons and relics are awaiting your prayers,

devotion and veneration. Over 600 books about saints are available

for your research or reading enjoyment while in the Crypt.

Our newest masterpiece is a miniature replicate of the Church of

the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, completely handmade out of

thousands of pieces of olive wood from the Holy Land.

The Rosary of the Unborn Prayer Group meets in the Crypt eve-

ry Thursday night from 7:00–8:00 P.M. If interested in joining them,

call Mary Ellyn Schneider at 630-253-2170. Now you can visit

Jesus in the Adoration Chapel and His saints in the Crypt every

Sunday before or after Mass.

Do This In Remembrance of Me

The Thursday of Holy Week is known as Holy Thurs-

day, the day we remember the Last Supper of Our Lord.

On this day, Jesus instituted two sacraments: the Holy Eu-

charist and the Holy Orders to the priesthood. It should be

very clear why Jesus instituted these two sacraments on the

same day; these two sacraments complement each other

and depend upon each other. Both of these sacraments en-

sure Jesus’ continued presence on Earth through the sacri-

fice the Holy Mass through our priests. We can bear the

fruit of these two sacraments any time of the day or night

by going to the Adoration Chapel to pray before Jesus’

Real Presence in the Holy Eucharist. What better time than

Holy Week to visit with Jesus and fix our eyes upon His

radiance and glory and meditate about the Last Supper.

As we recall, during Jesus’ agony in the garden….

“When he returned to his disciples he found them asleep. He said to Peter, ‘So you could not keep watch with me for one hour?’” Matthew 26:40. Do not let the Lord find you

asleep during this holiest of weeks. Awake from your

slumber and exclaim, “Yes, Jesus, I will spend an hour

with you!” Come to the Adoration Chapel and spend a spe-

cial hour with the Lord. This hour will prove to surpass

any other time you have ever experienced!

Opportunities to Serve

Are you being called to serve? Visitation Parish is looking

Married Singles Lifestyle

The Married Singles Lifestyle describes couples that

may have lost a sense of closeness they once had as mar-

riage partners and are living more like roommates.

Retrouvaille (pronounced retro-vi with a long i) teaches

couples how to survive times like these in their marriages.

This program has helped tens of thousands of couples ex-

periencing difficulty at all levels of marital distress from

disillusionment to deep misery. For confidential infor-

mation about or to register for the April program begin-

ning with a weekend on April 15-17 call 630-541-8833 or

Visitation Mission Statement Visitation Parish, a Roman Catholic Community in the Diocese of Joliet-in-Illinois, seeks to draw all to Jesus Christ, revelation of the

Father and font of the Holy Spirit, by celebrating the Sacraments, educating people of all ages in the Truths of the Catholic Faith, and

reaching out to those who are physically, emotionally or spiritually in need.

New Parishioners, Welcome! Call or stop in the Rectory Office to register as a member of Visitation Parish.

Baptisms Most Sundays at 1:30 P.M. Parents are required to take a Baptism Preparation Class beforehand. Classes

are held every other month, so please plan ahead. Call the Rectory for information.

Marriages Arrangements must be made at the Rectory at least six months in advance. Catholic parties must obtain a

NEWLY issued certificate of their Baptism and then contact the Rectory before making any other

arrangements. Weddings scheduled at 12:00 or 2:00 P.M. on Saturday. NO Sunday Weddings.

Funerals It is the responsibility of the parish to bury their dead. The funeral director will contact the parish

regarding arrangements. No specific offering is required for the parish in connection with the funeral

liturgy.

Perpetual Adoration Chapel The Perpetual Adoration Chapel of Our Lady, Mother of the Eucharist, is available 24 hours a day for

private prayer and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, exposed on the Altar. The Chapel is located in the

Convent building (south of the church).

St. Peregrine Novena Devotions in honor of Saint Peregrine, the patron saint of those who suffer with cancer are held the third

Tuesday of every month at 7:00 P.M. in the church.

Visits to the Sick Due to changes in hospital admitting policies, it is necessary to inform the Rectory when hospitalized

parishioners would like a visit from a priest or deacon.
