For the past 48 years,
Dave Micahnik's
name has been syn-
onymous with the
Penn Fencing pro-
gram. Beginning
back in 1955 when he
was a student-athlete
under the late-
Maestro Lajos Csiszar
to the upcoming
2004 season, which
finds him preparing
for his 30th year at
the helm of the Red
and Blue.
While Micahnik,
who is only the third
head coach in the his-
tory of the program,
might equal Penn Fencing, his name also translates into
continued success for the Red and Blue as the Quakers'
leader has overseen 29 consecutive winning seasons for
both the men's and women's programs. In addition, he
has led his squads to two NCAA Championships, 11
Intercollegiate Fencing Association (IFA) titles and 19 Ivy
League banners.
And the Hits Just Keep on ComingWhile as a team the Quakers have enjoyed a spoil of rich-
es, the Red and Blue's success under Micahnik does not
stop there, as the 1959 graduate of the University of
Pennsylvania has coached 32 fencers who have gone on
to international competition, including most recently Cliff
Bayer and Tamir Bloom who competed in the 2000
Olympic Games representing the United States.
Along with the international exposure, Micahnik has
also guided five individual NCAA champions, 42 All-
Americans and 81 All-Ivy selections. This past season saw
Yale Cohen and Jean Goto continue the long line of All-
Americans at Penn after the duo garnered second-team
and honorable mention, respectively, from the United
States Coaches Fencing Association.
Another Banner SeasonThe men’s and women’s team combined for their fifth-
straight top-20 finish at the NCAA Championships in
2003 after finishing 11th overall, while the men’s team cap-
tured the program’s 15th Ivy League crown (and 10th
under Micahnik) in 2003 after posting a 3-1 League mark
and 13-3 overall record.
With their 13-3 showing, the Red and Blue improved
to 258-79 (.766) under Micahnik. Overall under his tute-
lage, the Quakers have captured 11 Ivy League banners,
including three since 1999 and eight consecutive from
1976-83.
The women’s team continued to improve in the win
column as the Red and Blue went 14-5 overall in 2003 and
extended their record under Micahnik to 276-78 (.780).
As a team, they finished fifth overall at the IFAs in 2003,
and combined with the men for a fourth-place finish.
In addition to the team’s successes over the past cam-
paign, five Quakers qualified for the NCAA
Championships with Cohen and Goto placing sixth and
ninth, respectively. Penn is an astounding 534-157 (.796)
in the three decades Micahnik has been at the helm of
the fencing programs.
On the MantleWhen checking Micahnik's coaching resume, the first
item that catches one's eye is the two national champi-
onships, which his men's team captured in 1981 and his
women's squad earned in 1986.
Under Micahnik, the women have finished in the top
five 14 times at the NCAA Championships, while in addi-
tion to their national title in 1981, the men placed second
in 1978, 1980 and 1987.
Penn has won the Ivy League championship 19 times
under Micahnik. The men have captured 11 banners
(1976-83, 1999, 2001 and 2003) and the women eight
(1983-86, 1988, 1992 and 1994-95). The men have also
posted 11 IFA titles (1976-78, 1980-83, 1985 and 1990).
When the Teacher was a PupilUnder legendary Penn Fencing Coach Csiszar, Micahnik
was a first-team All-Ivy selection in the epee as a senior,
and competed in the Eastern Finals in 1958 and 1959.
The following year after he graduated from Penn,
Micahnik went on to become the United States National
Champion and competed in the 1960 (Rome), 1964
(Tokyo) and 1968 (Mexico City, where he met current
Penn Fencing assistant coach Iosif Vitebskiy) Olympic
Games.
Micahnik placed second at the U.S. Nationals in 1964,
1966 and 1968. He was a member of the 1965 World
Maccabiah Games gold-medal winning epee and foil
teams, where he also won the individual epee and fin-
ished second in the foil. Micahnik was back for a repeat
of both the individual and team epee titles at the World
Maccabiah Games in 1969.
Coaching AccoladesThe 1997 United States Fencing Coaches Association's
Collegiate Coach of the Year, Micahnik has extensive
international coaching experience, guiding U.S. teams in
four Under-20 World Championships, five World
University Games, two World Championships, the 1985
and 1993 World Maccabiah Games and the 1986 and
1988 Junior Pan-American Games.
Still CompetingMicahnik continues to compete in the sport he loves
today, having captured two silver medals in the Veteran-
60 Men's Epee at the Veteran's National Championships
in 2000 and 2001.
Hall of Fame FencerNineteen ninety-seven saw Micahnik inducted into the
inaugural class of the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of
Fame and Class II of the University of Pennsylvania's
Athletic Hall of Fame. This past offseason saw Micahnik
inducted into the Luzerne County (Pa.) Athletic Hall of

IOSIFVITEBSKIY6th season
Iosif Vitebskiy enters his sixth season as an assistant coach with the
Red and Blue. His vast knowledge and experience made an immedi-
ate impact in 1998-99 as he helped guide the men’s team to its first
Ivy League title since 1983, while the men’s and women’s teams
combined for a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
Prior to his appointment at Penn, Vitebskiy served for 10 years
(1988-1998) as the director of the school for high sport achieve-
ments at the State University of Ukraine. Before that, he was head
coach of the Ukraine Republic National team for 13 years, where he
guided five epee fencers to National and Olympic championships.
A graduate of the Kiev State University with a degree in physical
culture and sport, Vitebskiy was a member of both the Soviet Union
and Ukraine national teams. A 19-time national championship
medalist, earning 10 gold, six silver and three bronze medals,
Vitebskiy was a three-time winner of both the Soviet Union and the
Europe Cup tournaments.
He is a former member of the USSR team that won three consec-
utive World Championships (1967-69) and earned a silver medal at
the 1968 Olympic Games. In the summer of 1999, Vitebskiy won the
gold medal in the Veteran 60 Men’s Epee at the Summer National
Championships in Charlotte, N.C.

More of the same is the call for 2004 as the Penn men's and women's fencing pro-
grams prepare for another Ivy League title run. The men's squad is coming off its
15th League crown in 2003, and second banner in three seasons, after posting a 13-
3 record (3-1 Ivy). The women turned in another successful campaign as well,
recording a 14-5 mark (2-3 Ivy). Both squads combined for a fourth-place finish at
the IFAs and an 11th-place finish at NCAAs.
Despite the loss of two All-Americans, Head Coach Dave Micahnik will
return five All-Ivy selections and 23 letterwinners when competition begins in
January. In addition to the returning depth, the fruits of Micahnik's recruiting
efforts will be evident in the incoming Class of 2007, which consists of 13 fencers,
all of whom could challenge for playing time immediately.
The men's quest for another Ancient Eight title will begin where it has the
past few seasons - with the men's foil squad. Despite the graduation of All-
American Yale Cohen, the foil lineup should not miss a beat with the return of sen-
iors Andrew Radu and Jeff Breen as well as junior captain Stephen Gavalas.
Radu received the Quakers' 2003 Award for Excellence after earning a first-
team All-Ivy nod on the strength of a 10-2 record (32-6 overall). The first-team
nod was his second-straight and has corresponded with two-consecutive NCAA
Championship appearances. Breen is one-year removed from an All-American sea-
son, although 2003 was not too shabby after he went 20-10 overall and earned a
second-team All-Ivy berth. Radu and Breen have combined for a record of 182-32
over the past three seasons.
Gavalas will seek the opportunity to join the lineup on a full-time basis in
2003. Last season, the Quakers' captain posted a career-high 19 victories. In two
seasons of part-time duty, Gavalas has recorded a mark of 31-12.
Sophomore Jonathan Danoff also returns for his second season at foil. He
will be joined by incoming freshman Michael Galligan. Galligan should challenge
for playing time immediately if he can convert his experience winning the Under-20
U.S. Men’s Foil Championship into college wins right away.
At epee the Red and Blue return second-team All-Ivy sophomore Michael
Sanders, junior ChungXing Mah and sophomore Ari Paul. Sanders racked up 31
victories last season (second most on the team) and placed 11th at the NCAA
Championships as a rookie. Mah enjoyed a breakout season recording a career-
best 25-19 record, including six victories in Ivy action. Paul went 8-5 in his colle-
giate debut. The returning trio will be bolstered by the addition of freshmen
Jonathan Gale and Nicholas Salvatore. Gale could challenge for a spot in the start-
ing lineup if he proves to make a quick transition from the high school to the colle-
giate game. Salvatore fenced at the D.C. Fencer’s Club and will also need to
adjust to the collegiate level.
Rounding out the men's lineup will be the sabre squad, which returns soph-
omores Mark Kindrachuk, William Caulin and Jeffrey Jorge as well as senior
Christopher Lvoff and sophomore Jonathan Press. Kindrachuk turned in an
impressive rookie campaign as he was one of only three fencers on the men's team
to record 30 victories in 2003, leading his weaponmates with a record of 30-15.
Caulin also turned in a strong debut, recording 21 wins, while the men's Most
Improved Fencer in 2003 Jorge added a 4-3 record after switching weapons (2-0 at
foil) during the middle of the season. Lvoff provided leadership to the young unit
and accounted for 14 more wins. Press follows Jorge from foil, where he went 7-2
as a freshman.
Two incoming recruits could crack the starting lineup if they can make the
quick transition. Emil Cappetta and Mike Haass will push the returning letterwin-
ners right away, and if both can adapt quickly they could see action.
From top to bottom the women's lineup could be the strongest it has been
since the program won an NCAA title in 1986. It boasts three returning All-Ivy
selections as well as two NCAA Championships competitors. The Red and Blue's
chase for that elusive Ivy crown will be led by the foil lineup, as it returns two All-
Ivy performers and all five letterwinners from a year ago - all of whom posted a
winning record.
Junior team captain Emmanuelle Humblet and sophomore Christina
Kaneshige were both All-Ivy honorees in 2003. Kaneshige was tabbed a first-team
selection after posting a 32-12 mark in her rookie campaign. Humblet led the
weapon in wins (33) en route to her second-team berth. The third-year fencer has
won 74 bouts in just two short seasons with the Quakers. Sophomore Kate
Napalkova rounds out the foil squad's returning starters. Her 29-12 record in 2003
ranked her sixth on the team.
Sophomore Monica DeFabio and senior Cindy Wang also return and will
challenge the top three for playing time on a daily basis. In her rookie season,
DeFabio won 10 of the 14 bouts she competed in, while Wang enjoyed an unde-
feated campaign with a 9-0 mark.
A strong weapon for Micahnik becomes even more formidable with the
addition of freshmen Eve Overton and Danielle Vasilescu, both of whom will chal-
lenge their weaponmates immediately for a spot in the lineup.
Despite the loss of two 20-plus winners, look for the Quakers not to miss a
beat with their epee lineup as 2003 Award for Excellence winner Livia Rurarz-
Huygens and her 34 victories return. The epee squad will also be bolstered by the
return of senior Elizabeth Kreidman. Kreidman captured 13 bouts last season and
has a three-year win total of 78.
Richman will challenge immediately for one of the open positions in the
starting lineup after going 9-3 last season and 21-20 over the last two seasons.
The lineup will not be locked in stone as incoming freshmen Holly Buechel and
Jacklyn Schramm could push for playing time immediately. Buechel is a Class A
fencer and is coming off four-straight New Jersey high school district titles.
And while Penn’s returners at foil and epee all possess impressive credentials,
sabre should prove to be the Red and Blue’s deepest weapon. The return of the
2003 Most Improved Fencer Kate Zimmerly and senior June Hsu, who combined
for 49 victories from a year ago, would be a good starting point, but look for three
incoming freshmen to challenge for strip time immediately.
Last season was a coming out party for both Zimmerly and Hsu as they
served notice that the Quakers were solid across the board. Zimmerly recorded a
career-high 24 victories and placed 18th in her first NCAA Championships appear-
ance. Hsu won a career-high 25 wins (second-most in weapon) in her first season
fencing at sabre.
Zimmerly and Hsu will be challenged right from the start as incoming rook-
ies Annika Eiremo, Katelyn Sherry and Cassandra Frey all vie for time immediately.
Each possess strong resumes and are nationally-ranked. Their early progress could
make an immediate impact on Penn’s Ivy title aspirations.
Adding depth at sabre will also be returning juniors Yael Miller and Ashley
Zeigler, who are returning from five-win seasons.
With the returning talent and depth that both men's and women's programs
already possess, along with the addition of another strong-recruiting class, Penn
looks poised to add to its Ivy League and possibly NCAA hardware in 2004.

Men's Fencing - Ivy League ChampsFor the third time in five years the Penn men's fencing teamis the pride of the Ivy League, as the Red and Blue earneda tie of the 2003 Ancient Eight banner (with Columbia)after posting a 3-1 Ivy League record. The Quakers alsofinished the season ranked sixth by the United StatesFencing Coaches Association (USFCA) and scored victo-ries over No. 7 Princeton, No. 9 Rutgers and No. 10Harvard en route to a 13-3 overall finish. The Red andBlue's only defeats came at the hands of higher-rankedfoes.
At the NCAA Championships, Penn finished 10th over-all and combined for 11th with the women. At the IFAs, theRed and Blue finished fifth overall and combined with thewomen's team for a fourth-place finish.
Two-thousand and three saw contributions from theusual players as junior foil Andrew Radu led the team with32 victories. Senior weaponmate Yale Cohen also topped30 wins. While Radu and Cohen were the Quakers' oldreliable, the lineup also received an infusion of youth asfreshman epee Michael Sanders won 31 bouts and fresh-man sabre Mark Kindrachuk posted a 30-win season.
In addition to the new blood, the men's lineup pro-duced three more 20-win fencers - sophomore epeeChungXing Mah (25), freshman sabre William Caulin (21)and junior foil Jeff Breen (20).
Post-Season Play and HonorsCohen earned a second-team All-America berth from theUSFCA after placing sixth overall at the NCAAChampionships. He posted a 16-7 mark at the champi-onships and just missed reaching the medal round.
Weaponmate Radu represented the Quakers on the All-Ivy team, earning his second-straight first-team berth, aswell as earning the Red and Blue's 2003 Award forExcellence. Radu won 10-of-12 Ivy bouts this past season. He also joined Cohen at the NCAAs, placing 14th overall.
Kindrachuk capped off a strong rookie campaign byearning second-team All-Ivy honors. His six Ivy victorieshelped the Quakers to their 15th League banner.
Sanders was the third member of Penn's NCAA contin-gent, as the freshman placed 16th with nine victories.
Freshman Jeff Jorge was named the Quakers' MostImproved Fencer after switching weapons midway throughthe season. Jorge compiled an overall record of 6-3,beginning the season 2-0 at foil before moving to sabre, where he won his first four duels, and also recorded fourvictories at the IFA's.
Pacing the AttackThe men's foil squad was once again the Red and Blue'stop weapon, as the team boasted two 30-win fencers, fol-lowed by a 20-bout and a 19-bout winners. In addition, the Quakers placed third at the IFA's. Radu and Cohen setthe tone, and were followed by junior Jeff Breen, who fin-ished 2003 with a mark of 20-10. Sophomore StephenGavalas saw his fair share of action, recording a career-high19 victories.
Freshman Jonathan Press turned in a strong rookiedebut, rolling up a record of 7-2 in limited action.
Surprise, SurpriseEntering the season, the men's epee team was the least-experienced weapon. However, senior Dan Borden, soph-omore ChungXing Mah and freshman Michael Sanderscombined for 54 victories and played a pivotal role as Penncaptured the Ivy League flag. The epee lineup also turnedin a sixth-place finish at IFAs.
Sanders was the gem of the unit, recording a 31-13 markin his rookie season. He finished 11th at the NCAAChampionships and fourth at Regionals. Borden's 18 winswere a career-high, as the veteran of the lineup also postedan 18th-place showing at the Mid-Atlantic/South Regionalchampionships. Mah turned in a breakout campaign, rolling to a mark of 25-19 and a fifth-place finish atRegionals.
In addition, freshman Ari Paul started the season 7-0 insabre bouts before finishing with eight victories.
Learning on the GoThe men's sabre team started two freshmen during the2003 campaign. If Head Coach Dave Micahnik was con-
cerned of the lack of experience his epee team possessed,he must have been really concerned about his sabre lineup.Any concern he had would have ended up being unwar-ranted as Mark Kindrachuk and William Caulin combinedfor 51 victories. The two rookies turned in stellar debuts inhelping Penn to another Ivy League championship and asixth-place finish at IFA's.
Kindrachuk was one of the team's four 30-bout win-ners, and led the sabre team with a mark of 30-15. He was6-6 in Ivy League action and placed 23rd at Regionals.Meanwhile, Caulin won 21 duels and placed 12th atRegionals.
In addition to the Red and Blue's Most ImprovedFencer Jeff Jorge, who went 4-3, junior Christopher Lvoffrecorded 14 wins and senior Jit Fong Oon once again pro-vided the Red and Blue lineup with depth and the willing-ness to compete whenever called upon.
Women's Fencing - Another Winning SeasonThe women's fencing team turned in its second-straight 13-win season, topping the 13-victories it recorded in 2002 bygoing 14-5 overall and 2-3 in the Ivy League. Highlightsduring the campaign included wins over No. 9 Rutgers,Stanford, Duke and M.I.T., all of which received votesalong with Penn in the final United States Fencing CoachesAssociation (USFCA) poll. The Red and Blue combinedwith the men for an 11th-place finish at NCAA's (15th as ateam) and combined with the men for a fourth-place finishat IFA's (fifth as a team). Also, both the epee and sabreteams earned bronze medals at the IFAs.
Two freshmen led the Quakers in victories as Jean Gotowon a team-high 35 epee bouts followed by weapon andclassmate Livia Rurarz-Huygens, who captured 34 bouts.Penn also had three more 30-win fencers, as senior sabreChristina Verigan and sophomore foil Emanuelle Humbleteach won 33 duels, and freshman foil Christina Kaneshigerecorded 32 victories.
Four more members of the Red and Blue chipped inwith 20-win seasons as freshman foil Kate Napalkova justmissed the 30-win plateau with 29 victories, junior JuneHsu in her first season at sabre won 25 bouts, while seniorepee Kimberly Linton and sophomore sabre Kate Zimmerlyeach racked up 24 victories.
The Best of the BestIt was two sophomores and three freshmen that tookhome postseason honors for the Red and Blue in 2003 asLivia Rurarz-Huygens received Penn's Award for Excellence. The freshman went 34-11 overall and 9-6 in Ivy bouts. Sheplaced seventh at the Mid-Atlantic/South Regional champi-onships.
Jean Goto earned All-Ivy and All-American honors afterleading the Quakers with a record of 35-14. She earnedhonorable mention for All-America from the USFCA afterplacing ninth at the NCAA Championships. Goto was oneof two members of the Red and Blue to earn a first-teamAll-Ivy nod after recording an 11-4 mark in the AncientEight.
Joining Goto on the All-Ivy first-team was ChristinaKaneshige, who went 10-5 in League bouts and 32-12 over-all. Kaneshige also finished eighth at Regionals.
Sophomore Emanuelle Humblet earned a second-teamAll-Ivy berth after going 9-6 in Ivy action and 33-17 overall. She has averaged 37 victories in her first two seasons as aQuaker. In addition, Humblet also turned in an 18th-placefinish at Regionals.
Second-year fencer Kate Zimmerly was named the Redand Blue's Most Improved Fencer after recording a career-high 24 wins and placing 18th in her first NCAAChampionships appearance.
Balancing ActSeniors Kimberly Linton and Elizabeth Kreidman made theepee lineup the Red and Blue's strongest entering the 2003campaign. And while the weapon was once again a forcefor the Quakers, Linton and Kreidman received some helpto make the epee perhaps Penn's most balanced squad.
Linton was her usual brilliant self, recording a mark of24-14, her fourth-straight 20-win season. Kreidman madethe most of her time in the lineup, winning 13 bouts. But
the real story at epee in 2003 for Penn was the play offreshmen Jean Goto and Livia Rurarz-Huygens, who com-bined for 69 wins. Goto led the team with 35 victories, while Ruarz-Huygens was right behind her with 34 wins toher credit.
Also not to be lost was the continued strong play ofsophomore Rebecca Richman, who went 9-3.
Another Young LineupThe women's foil squad marked the youngest unit on boththe men's and women's teams as sophomore EmmanuelleHumblet and freshmen Christina Kaneshige and KateNapalkova combined for 74 victories.
Humblet, who in just her second year was the veteranof the group, posted her second-straight 30-win season bygoing 33-17 to lead the weapon. Kaneshige followed righton her heels with a 32-12 mark. Napalkova rounded outthe foil starters with a record of 29-19 and boasted two vic-tories over ranked-Columbia.
Junior Cindy Wang spelled the trio whenever needed, allowing the foil squad to not miss a beat as Wang went 9-0.
BreakoutWhile the women's epee and foil lineups were young, thecoaching staff felt it knew what they could expect fromthem. The women's sabre squad was another story.Returning was senior Christina Verigan, who was her usualsteady self, posting her second-straight 33-win season.
However, after Verigan, Micahnik was counting on jun-ior June Hsu and sophomore Kate Zimmerly. Hsu hadnever fenced at sabre prior to 2003 and Zimmerly only hadseven collegiate fencing wins on her resume.
All Hsu and Zimmerly did was combine for 49 wins.Hsu truly had a phenomenal season in her first-ever com-petition at sabre, recording 25 victories, while Zimmerlyturned in a career-high 24 wins.
Sophomores Yael Miller and walk-on Ashley Zeiglercapped off the Quakers sabre lineup, as the duo each wonfive bouts.

Francis BartoneFrank Bartone became the seventh member of the Penn fencing program to beinducted into the Penn Athletic Hall of Fame on May 10, 2003.
Bartone was the first Penn fencer to ever be named All-American in two differ-ent weapons (sabre in 1951 and foil in 1953), Bartone served as team captain forthe Red and Blue’s first-ever NCAA Championship in 1953.
Bartone was a three-year letterwinner for the Red and Blue (1951-53) and con-tinued to prosper as a fencer after Penn, winning the North Atlantic SabreChampionship in 1959 and placing second in 1958. Eight years later, he won theOklahoma City Invitational and Southeastern Championships.
Maestro Lajos CsiszarJust say, The Maestro, and all Pennsylvanians know you are referring to LajosCziszar, the legendary fencing master and head coach of NCAA champions andOlympic Games competitors.
The Maestro was considered one of the finest fencing masters in Europewhen he left his native country for the United States in 1947. As Pennsylvania'shead coach he guided the fencing team to two NCAA team championships(1953, 1969), and coached nine NCAA individual champions and 27 All-Americans. The 1953 NCAA title was the first ever won by any Pennsylvania varsi-ty team.
Csiszar established the Salle Csiszar Club in Philadelphia, a training and prac-tice club for many of the outstanding fencers in the country, and also a teachingcenter. He coached American fencers in Olympic and Pan-American Games, andin world championships.
Paul R. FriedbergPaul Friedberg was the recipient of the Class of 1915 Award in 1981, the first fencerto receive the award which is presented annually to that member of the seniorclass who most closely approaches the ideal University of Pennsylvania student-athlete.
Friedberg was a four-time all-Ivy League choice in sabre competition, a three-time All-American, and the NCAA sabre champion in 1980 and 1981. He was amember of Pennsylvania's 1981 NCAA championship team, a member of the U.S.junior national team as an undergraduate, and competed for the United States inthe 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul.
Friedberg graduated with degrees from the Wharton School and from the
College of Engineering and Applied Science. On learning of his selection as theClass of 1915 winner he said: “Receiving this award brings Penn very close to myheart.”
P. Todd Makler, Jr.Todd Makler followed in his father's footsteps as a fencer, competing in the 1972Olympic Games for the United States, 20 years after his father did. Makler was a first-team All-American in sabre in 1967 and 1968, and was NCAAindividual sabre champion both years. He continued to compete following gradu-ation, and had just received a degree from the Medical School in 1972 when hewon his Olympic team berth, in epee, the same as his father did in 1952.
David M. MicahnikMicahnik, who is currently the coach for the University of Pennsylvania men's andwomen's fencing teams, built a very impressive career for himself also at Penn.Under the tutelage of Penn athletic Hall of Fame member Maestro Lajos Csiszar,Micahnik began his prestigious career with All-Ivy League accolades in 1959 andmade the Eastern finals in 1958 and 1959.
The following year, Micahnik competed in the first of his three OlympicGames, heading to Rome in 1960, Tokyo in 1964 and Mexico City in 1968.Micahnik's forte was the epee. He won the U.S. National title in 1960, with sec-ond-place finishes in 1964, 1966, and 1968.
Competing in the World Maccabiah games in 1965, Micahnik won the individ-ual epee title and took second in the foil, with the epee, sabre and foil teams win-ning gold medals. In 1969 at the same competition, Micahnik again won the indi-vidual epee title, as did the epee team.
Currently, Micahnik is a Fencing Master, accredited by the U.S. FencingCoaches' Association, and besides coaching at the University of Pennsylvania, hehas guided several U.S. National teams, U.S. Under-20 teams and U.S. WorldUniversity teams. In 1997, he was honored as the U.S. Fencing CoachesAssociation's Collegiate Coach of the Year.
Mary Jane O'NeillMary Jane O'Neill was the first Penn women’s fencer to represent the UnitedStates in the Olympic Games, in 1988 in Seoul and again in 1992 in Barcelona.
O'Neill was a three-time all-Ivy League selection in foil (1984-1986), and athree-time first-team All-American (1983-85), and was the NCAA individual cham-pion as a sophomore in 1984. As a senior captain, she also led the 1986 team tothe NCAA team championship, the first by a Pennsylvania women's varsity team.
Following her senior year, O'Neill was the recipient of the Fathers Award, given annually to Pennsylvania's outstanding senior woman student-athlete.
Bob ParmacekBob Parmacek turned in an outstanding four-year career for the Red and Bluewhich culminated in a 1953 NCAA Sabre Championship and two-straight first-team All-American nods in 1952 and 1953.
Paramacek also helped Penn Fencing become a national power in the middleof the century, as his first varsity season in 1951 saw the Quakers post their firstNCAA finish since 1925 (second-place).
The 1953 Eastern sabre champion, Parmacek also posted two consecutive sec-ond-place finishes at the event.
After graduation, Parmacek was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. NavalReserve and put on active duty. In 1955, as a member of the U.S. Military FencingTeam that competed in the Military World Championships in Cairo, Egypt,Parmacek finished second in the sabre competition. He was a member of theU.S. World Championship Team in Rome, Italy and was appointed to the 1956U.S. Olympic Squad.
The University of Pennsylvania athletic department established thePenn Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996 to honor the greatest athletesand coaches ever to wear and coach the Red and Blue. After fourinduction ceremonies, the list of honorees has grown to include 111people who helped create Penn’s rich athletic history and tradition. The Penn fencing program has been honored with seven members ofthis prestigious collection of distinguished individuals.
