From the Desk Of Fr. John

Coronavirus has taken center stage in every-one’s life at this point. We need to take the warnings seriously and act on the health recom-mendations that professionals are giving us in order to slowdown and stop the spread of this disease. CDC urges us to…Clean Hands Often…Avoid Close Contact…Stay Home if Sick…Cover Coughs and Sneezes…and to avoid large crowds. These measures sound simple…but they can slow down the spread of the virus. During church services, we are asking every-one to follow these simple guidelines. The sign of peace can be given without physical con-tact…Holy Communion from the cup will be sus-pended (will NOT be given)…the Food Hospitality Table will be closed for the season. Father will refrain from shaking hands and giving hugs…except elbow ones…so as not to pass anything on to anyone else…or receive anything unwant-ed. Bishop Paprocki has dispensed all of us…in abundance of caution…from the obligation to at-tend Mass until further notice. Mass will be of-fered whenever possible at the normal hours…we are invited to attend and pray…but again…caution about numbers of people gathered…so spread out. We need to be very sensitive to those most vulnerable by age, sickness or any other health issues. These folks are urged to make the decision…not to attend Mass…and are excused because of these reasons…and out of charity and concern for others. We join in prayer for all affected by this Pandem-ic. Let us ask the Lord to watch over and protect all those who suffer from this disease, those of their families, our healthcare providers and all who are helping to stem the tide of the spread of this virus. We also offer prayers for those who have died because of this disease and for the consolation of their families. Schools in the Diocese of Springfield in Illi-nois and all schools in Illinois are closed due to

the Coronavirus outbreak. SSPP Parish School (and PSR) will be closed until March 30 at which time the situation will be reassessed by the Gov-ernor and Bishop Paprocki. Our parish school is equipped to use and has in place a ‘Virtual Learning System’ (already imple-mented on snow days) to provide ‘meaningful in-struction’ for grades Kindergarten through 8th. Our teachers will be available daily through email (Fast Direct) for questions and concerns. We are taking whatever measures needed to keep our children safe ‘while engaging them through the learning processes.’ The Third, Fourth and Fifth Sundays of Lent are very special days (the Sundays of the Three Scrutinies) in the lives of the Elect Cate-chumens…as they are to be for us all. The Third Sunday brought us to a well…on a very hot after-noon…in Samaria…a country and people…hated by the people of Judah. It was there that we met Jesus and strangely enough…a Samaritan wom-an coming to get water. Jesus engaged her by giving her a directive to give Him a drink…and in further dialogue…to bring her to faith in Him. Something happened in that dialogue. She grew in her understanding of God’s plan of salvation for her…and much more. Eventually she goes to tell the nearby community about ‘the one who told me everything I ever did.’ However, it was through her testimony…and their own listening to Jesus…that they came to faith as well! Now we find ourselves observing and listening to the unfolding saga of a blind man (blind from birth) receive his sight…from Jesus…and grow into a profound faith in Jesus. All the while those who are the religious leaders of the day…question…and question again…while going fur-ther into doubt and disbelief in Jesus and the sign He has performed. They end up condemning Je-sus and the man who was healed. We need to pray that our eyes will be opened…seeing whatever faults need to be healed…and seeing all the good in us that needs to be strengthened…that we may grow in faith and share it!

The Catholic Relief Ser-vices collection, a Lenten almsgiving opportunity, is this weekend March 21-22. Your support of this collection serves Jesus by helping people in need in some of the most

marginalized communities in our world. For example, migrant farmworkers in California's San Joaquin Valley work 6 am until 7 pm during grape har-vest time. Some workers have lived in the valley for years, renting nearby trailer housing, and others live in towns nearby. Still others are recent migrants from Mexico and Central America. Lay ministers serve all these workers by visiting migrant camps near the

vineyards. They bring religious instruction and share prayer, theological reflection, and Catholic social jus-tice teaching about the inherent dignity and rights of migrant workers. Through funds from this collection, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' programs for the pastoral care of migrants, refugees, and travelers col-laborate with local dioceses to visit and attend to the needs of underserved migrant farm workers and oth-ers who live on the margins. Your support of this collection makes a difference for so many around the globe. Please prayerfully consid-er how you can support the collection this year. To learn more about the collection and the people who benefit, please visitwww.usccb.org/catholic-relief.

As in any time of crisis, stress or trials, the first place we should turn is to God and our Lady in prayer. We invite the parish to: • Commit to recite a daily rosary for

our parish, community, nation and world for Our Lady's intercession and protection against the Covid 19, corona vi-rus.

• Pray the

Memorare: Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy pro-tection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sin-ful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen • Say the special prayer on this

page.

The Feast of Mercy is celebrated on the first Sunday after East-er, that is on the Second Sunday of Easter (April 19), which is called the Divine Mercy Sunday. On the day of Sister Faustina’s canonization, April 30, 2000, the Pope instituted the feast for the whole Church.

The institution of the feast was inspired by a desire of Jesus which was conveyed by Sister Faustina. The Lord Jesus told her: I desire that the first Sunday after Easter be the Feast of Mer-cy (Diary 299). I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especial-ly for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender Mer-cy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the Fount of My Mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened (Diary 699).

The Divine Mercy Cenacle meets every first and third Wednes-day of the month in Morris Hall at 1pm. For more information call
