TBT
Saturday, November 10 at 12:00 noon (following services) Shabbat Lunch & Learn
Jon Dobrer, Guest Speaker
“ROOTS & BITTER FRUITS OF ANTI-SEMITISM”
Jon Dobrer, past spiritual leader of the UUCF which meets here at TBT, will speak about his newest book, focusing on why anti-semitism matters far beyond the
Jewish community. How is it the model of how societies “other” minorities, isolate them, and dehumanize them in order to justify
their oppression and even destruction.

PARTNERING WITH PATHWAYS OF HOPE TO COOK Friday, November 30, 7:30 p.m. (after Shabbat services)
SHARING A POST-THANKSGIVING MEAL WITH NEIGHBORS
Those experiencing homelessness still find reasons to be thankful. At times of holidays, it is especially important for us to reach out to those in need and “pray with our feet.” This year, TBT will partner with residents at New Vista Shelter as we cook together a Thanksgiving feast, which will be shared after our service on Friday, November 30 (our monthly Shabbat dinner). Call the TBT office to sign up for our cooking party (714.871.3535) or to donate towards our meal (turkeys, stuffing, onions, or any other ingredient). Monetary donations welcome – join us to cook & celebrate COMMUNITY. Residents of New Vista Shelter will join us for our Shabbat dinner on November 30 … A very special Shabbat dinner!

Message from Rabbi Nico …
“They Spoke the Same Words” – Uniformity is not Unity!
D’var Torah from Parashat Noach – October 12, 2018
The story of the Tower of Babel is one of the most famous and in my opinion misinterpreted stories in the bible.
Genesis 11:1-9 ים׃ ים אחד ת ודבר ה אח רץ שפ י כל־הא יה Everyone on earth had the same language and the same words. And וas they migrated from the east, they came upon a valley in the land of Shinar and settled there. They said to one another, “Come, let us build us a city, and a tower with its top in the sky, to make a name for ourselves; else we shall be scattered all over the world.”
But Adonai came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. Adonai said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” So God scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.
Bible commentators wonder what was the thing that triggered God’s decision. The most common assumption is that those that were involved in building the tower were arrogant and thought that the height of the tower would equate their might to God’s.
However rabbi Naftali Zvi Yehuda Berlin, also known as the Netziv, commented: “The text did not explain what those words were. It just tells us that they were the same words, to teach us that it wasn’t because of the content of the words themselves that the Holy One of Blessing was distressed. … here what happened is that all thought the same thing, and this came to be the problem of the settlement.”
What the Natziv remarks as the main issue that arises from this story is the lack of variety. They spoke the same words, they thought alike and they wished to remain in the same place….
In the next Torah portion, we will be introduced to Abraham and through his figure to monotheism, and the idea of the oneness of God. But as we see in our current Torah portion the idea of oneness does not mean uniformity.
In a study by psycholinguist Shiri Lev-Ari non-native English speakers from various countries were asked to record banal statements like “ants don’t sleep” in English. When native English speakers rated the recordings for their veracity, they rated the speakers with the heaviest accents as least true, while native speakers were rated most true. Interestingly, we are apparently less likely to believe something if it’s said with a foreign accent. Lev-Ari explains that negative judgments are the result of the additional effort that our brains must make to process foreign speech. Our brains then shift the blame for this effort onto the veracity of the speaker. Yet, this is not a set condition. In as little as four minutes, a person can improve how much they understand of speech with a foreign accent. The more we’re exposed to foreign accents, the more our brains train themselves to process speech in general more efficiently.
There are two ideas that are key in order to understand the deep meaning of our tale. The first one is “B’tzelem Elohim ,” which means that we, humans, were created in the image of God. This notion implies that we all share a common denominator, but at the same time this commonality encompasses the endless variety of human-kind. And here it is again, unity but not uniformity.
The second idea is פרו ורבו ומלאו את הארץ “Pru u’rvu umal’u et ha’aretz,” commonly read as multiply yourselves and spread over the land. But the word “r’vu” also means variety. So we are called to participate in the creative action, to spread over the land and also to increase human variety.
Rambam teaches in “the Guide for the Perplexed” that the first of the Ten Commandments is to get to know God. We could even say that one of the purposes of our existence is to get to know the divine presence.
So, if the divine presence is represented by the diversity and multiplicity of humanity, now we can understand why God saw
an existential threat in the situation where Everyone on earth had the same language and the same words, and in all these humans wanting to remain at the same place. It was like compromising the endless potential of human creativity by adopting the comfort of uniformity.
The creation of languages is understood by many Torah commentators and even by modern research as a challenge to our ability to relate to each other. But we could also say that it is the key to unlocking the gates of wonder and deeper relationships . Diversity is coded as a difficulty and challenges our brains however for example in the business world multicultural -diverse teams tend to be more creative and effective.
Making small efforts to overcome these difficulties will help us to better understand this world and to uncover another layer of the divine presence. The ultimate message of the story of the Tower of Babel is that rather than seeking unity by similarity, we should seek unity by embracing diversity.
In his book “the Star of Redemption,” Frank Rosenzweig presents the idea that one day, in a redemptive future, we will all speak the same language again. However, he understands language as a tool of unification that does not reduce different individuals to that which is the same: speech only unites those who recognize or understand each other.
Now let’s be honest, this is not limited to accents. Very often when we struggle to understand the other side we say “he’s speaking in a different language” or if it is a political difference we say “she lives in a different world,” if it is about our children or our aging parents we will say “he lives in a different galaxy”…
How much easier it would be if we just spoke “the same language” and thought in the same words… It is like sometimes we wish we could just build that tower of uniformity, in which we eliminate the challenging diversity. But “thank God” we have languages, we are in different places, and we sound different.
May we internalize the profound meaning of our Torah portion and when we experience difficulties in understanding others, may we also savor the opportunity of getting to know our world more deeply.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Lauren Simon, TBT President
For me, the end of October and beginning of November mark the beginning of a stressful time. Between both of my children’s birthdays and impending holiday season, there is a lot going on. Every time we walk into Target, I am bombarded with requests for this toy or that game. I find myself needing to regularly take breaks to remember my “why.” November is the month of gratitude. We are challenged to define the things for which we are thankful. The fact that Thanksgiving happens before the gift giving season (with a few exceptions) is lucky. We have the opportunity to turn inward and remind ourselves of our “why” before we are swept away with the consumerism of the holidays. We all have so many things to be thankful for: family, friends, community, food, housing, love. My “why” is made up of all the things I am grateful for. I am thankful for two beautiful and happy, although sometimes crazy-making, children. I am thankful for my family and friends who support all of my endeavors. I am grateful for my community here at TBT. You are a huge part of my “why.” What is yours?
COOKING FOR PATHWAYS OF HOPE
There’s nothing like standing around the TBT kitchen island and digging in for some good homemade meals. On October 23 our Tikkun Olam gang did just that. We had signed up to served dinner at the New Vista Shelter of Pathways of Hope on the 24

together to do the cooking (plus helped us get a head start on cooking for the TBT Shabbat dinner on the 26
th. We

The Men's Club is very happy to announce that our membership has increased over last year at this time. Part of that is due to personal recruitment and partly because word of mouth gets around about our events, especially our biggest event - the Joke Breakfast. More importantly Men's Club has gotten younger both on our board and membership. This is crucial to succeed as an organization. The Men's Club strives to put together good events that bring TBT members together. If you have an idea for an event or comments how to improve an event please let us know. My email is [email protected] My ph # is 562-965-8287 Give me a call and voice your opinions. Thanks!

SOCIAL JUSTICE RAC-CA Regional Gathering -- Save the Date!
JANUARY 13
This moment in the new Jewish year is well timed for us to take the intentions we reflected on during High Holy Days and put them into action. And this moment in history calls for us to step up, say “Hineni – here I am,” and act to advance our Jewish values in California. For the second year, Reform Jewish social justice leaders will come together in regional gatherings to reflect on the current moment, share the lessons from our congregational work, and talk about how we can move forward together to bring about the California of our dreams. At last year’s RAC-CA regional gatherings, connections were forged among Reform Jewish social justice leaders from around the state, and people came away energized for the work ahead. This year’s gatherings should prove even more dynamic. This gathering is for all those involved in your congregational social justice teams. It will include both time for networking and learning from each other and also discussion of some of the deep challenges we encounter in working for justice. Please mark your calendars now and coordinate with others from your synagogue.

THE AMAZING STORY OF A RUSSIAN SAMOVAR
by Lou Ann Taback
A few months ago, Miriam Van Raalte was called by a young man who lives in the Bellflower area of Los Angeles County. His name is Derek Lefkowith. His ancestors were Russian Jews. Derek came across a picture on the internet of a Russian
samovar for sale. Intrigued because of his Russian ancestry, he quickly purchased the item. When he received the samovar, he discovered that it was engraved with the words TEMPLE BETH TIKVAH on the frontal surface. Serendipitously, he also discovered that engraved on the back side were the words “in honor of Robin Taback’s Bat Mitzvah.” Derek did a Google search for “Robin Taback,” and learned of her untimely passing as well as her musical talents by watching the three 15-minutes segments of her biographical video post on YouTube. Derek and his wife, Jennifer immediately decided that the samovar should be returned to its home, Temple Beth Tikvah, They contacted the TBT office, and then I was contacted to inform me of this amazing discovery. I was totally surprised since I was never aware of this samovar’s existence. Nevertheless, I gratefully accepted this loving gift on behalf of TBT from the Leftkowith’s. The samovar received a silver wash bath together with the silver Torah adornments prior to the High Holy Days and is now a beautiful vessel for use at Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, Onegs and other Temple functions.

BREA MAN WITH UNIQUE BLOOD HAS DONATED MORE THAN 600 TIMES
By SUSAN GAEDE | [email protected]
Orange County Register PUBLISHED: October 19, 2018
Barry Friedman, son of our own TBT member Joan Friedman, saves with his blood, which is filled with valuable, “highly unique” platelets. This Oct. 16, he celebrated his “sweet 600th” platelet donation to the American Red Cross.
Something special in Barry’s blood called HLA (human leukocyte antigen) is particularly useful in helping those who are critically ill, such as cancer patients recovering from surgery and organ transplant patients experiencing rejection. Through the Red Cross, he’s been able to participate in “directed HLA matches” with people like these all over the country.
“It’s been an incredible journey … an awesome and amazing experience,” Barry said, adding casually that he “looks forward to donating for many more years and saving as many lives as I can.”
Now that’s a super story, a real “tikkun olam” example as Barry helps to repair the world.
“Anyone who saves a life is as if he saved an entire world.” (Talmud – Sanhedrin 4:5)

OC iEngage – Jewish Values and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
Temple Beth Tikvah Proudly Presents an Exciting Learning Opportunity with the Shalom Hartman Institute
Join us as we explore the Jewish values that unite us. We’ll develop new ways of thinking and talking to each other about Israel by confronting one of the issues that most divides us.
Through the study of Jewish narratives about Israel and the complex meanings of peace, land, justice, self-preservation, compromise and Jewish exceptionalism in Jewish tradition, participants will develop a greater understanding of the ideals that shape their political views and
those of others. Together, participants will create a context for respectful Israel engagement across our differences.
