Workshops

Goals: Refresh and extend the skills learned inthe VISION Basic Training; work in teams toprepare for a simulated “self-audit” of SAT data;efficiently identify, isolate, and correct problemsin a typical VISION database; become familiarwith VISION features not covered in the VISIONBasic Training; learn from the experiences ofclassmates from various industries.

Who will benefit: This event is targeted forVISION users who are already competent in thefundamentals of the VISION Developer moduleand are already using many of its day-to-dayfeatures. It is designed for VISION users whowant to learn from the experiences gained byothers from various industries. This workshop isdesigned to help you become a more valuableresource to your departments, and to help yourorganization get the most out of your investmentin VISION.

Goal: Enable participants who are new to the VISION Learning Station to use theprogram effectively to create and manage learning activities and produce useful outcomesonline.

Who will benefit: Anyone who is charged with using the VISION Learning Station to createand/or manage the system, and users who want an in-depth refresher on the basics, willbenefit.

Course Objectives: Classify and describe the different kinds of VISION reports; demon-strate fluency in the core commands of the report scripting language; interpret and utilizeeffectively the information contained in the Report Scripting Language Primer; create newVISION reports according to end-user specifications on content and layout; troubleshooterrors in reports.

Goal: Enable participants who are new to VISION to use the program effectively to performISD/SAT process activities and produce useful outcomes (print-based).

Who will benefit: Anyone charged with using VISION to conduct any or all parts of theISD/SAT process, supervisors who would like to understand how VISION works, andusers who want an in-depth refresher on the basics will benefit.

Tips n’ Tricks by Joe

By July 2015, Robert Fripp willhave been getting out of vans andtour buses as a working musicianfor 54 years and as a professionalmusician for 45 years.

Taking up the guitar at the age ofeleven and dealing with obstaclessuch as being left-handed, tone-deaf, and with no sense of rhythm,Fripp nevertheless went on tocreate a distinctive guitar style andapproach. Since that time he hasworked with musicians as diverseas Blondie, The Orb, TalkingHeads, The Damned, RobertWyatt, Daryl Hall, The FutureSound of London, The Roches,Andy Summers, David Bowie,Brian Eno, The Stranglers, DavidSylvian, Peter Gabriel, and NickCave.

Along with groundbreakingcollaborations and decisivecontributions to such classicalbums as No Pussyfooting (withBrian Eno) and Heroes (DavidBowie), Fripp is probably bestknown as the co-founder andcontinuing member of the seminalrock group, King Crimson. Their1969 debut, In the Court of theCrimson King, had a profoundimpact on the music scene, andalbums such as Red (1974) andDiscipline (1981) have influencedcountless groups and musiciansright up to the present day.

In 1985 Fripp founded GuitarCraft, which he describes as a wayto develop a relationship withmusic and oneself. Their workcontinues across North and SouthAmerica as well as in various

countries in Europe under theauspices of Guitar Circle and inconcert as the Orchestra of CraftGuitarists.

He has also worked extensively asa solo artist. Fripp’s 1979 album,Exposure, was described as “theSergeant Pepper of avant punk.”Having toured extensively withFrippertronics, an analogue tapedelay system, in the late ‘70s andinto the ‘80s, his soloSoundscapes encompasseddigital technology from the early‘90s onwards. He has sincereleased several Soundscapesalbums, perhaps most notably ABlessing of Tears (1995), and isnoted for acclaimed performancesat the Winter Gardens of NewYork’s World Financial Center.

In 2012 Fripp stepped away fromthe frontline of music-making inorder to fight a long-runningdispute with the Universal MusicGroup over copyright infringement.With this successfully resolved, in2013 he announced the return ofKing Crimson with a new seven-piece lineup. The group performedacross America in 2014, andfurther concerts are scheduled forEurope and beyond in 2015.

In addition to numerousappearances on TV, including theacclaimed BBC documentary onDavid Bowie in which Fripp wasdescribed by Uncut as havingstolen the show, the guitarist isalso an experienced andaccomplished public speaker,regularly joining forces with hissister Patricia to deliver Fripp andFripp Keynote Speeches.

Patricia has won or been awardedthese designations by the NationalSpeakers Association: CertifiedSpeaking Professional (CSP),CPAE, Hall of Fame keynotespeaker, and the Cavett Award(considered the Oscar of speaking).Named “One of the 10 mostelectrifying speakers in NorthAmerica” by Meetings andConventions magazine, Patriciadelivers high-content, entertaining,dramatically memorablepresentations.

One of the few professionalspeakers who can transform thepresentation skills of others, she isan executive speech coach andsales presentation skills trainer.Kiplinger’s Personal Finance wrotethat one of the best investments inyour career is Patricia Fripp’spresentation skills training.Patricia simplifies and demystifiesthe process of preparing andpresenting powerful, persuasivepresentations.

Patricia is a past president, and thefirst female president, of the over3,000-member National SpeakersAssociation. She is a member of thehighly prestigious SpeakersRoundtable, an invitation-only groupof highly regarded professionalspeakers, authors, and consultants.Patricia often teams up with herbrother, legendary guitarist of KingCrimson, Robert Fripp, for Fripp andFripp presentations on “How to Be aHero for More Than One Day” and“Beginner to Master.”

RICHARD McPHERSON

In 1963, Richard McPherson began his nuclear power career in the Navy nuclear propul-sion program, qualifying on several Submarine nuclear plants.  As a nuclear officer he wasinstrumental in installing the new Personal Qualification System in 121 Navy ships, and set-ting up the Pacific Fleet Propulsion Examining Board.

A few highlights of his career following his Naval service: Teaching the Chairman of KoreanElectric Power Company about nuclear power for Bechtel Corporation.  As a result of Cher-nobyl, Richard was selected to be the United States Representative to the InternationalAtomic Energy Agency in Vienna, Austria as part of a special six nation group researchingand teaching, "Nuclear Fuel Cycle Facilities, the Environment and Public Opinion" for fouryears.

On March 11, 2011, three hours after the Tsunami hit the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear facility,Mr. McPherson was called by the head of Japan Nuclear Safety.  Mr. McPherson has visit-ed Chernobyl, and Tokyo Electric Power Company nuclear facilities damaged by an earth-quake in 2007 and the Fukushima plants damaged by the March 2001 Tsunami.

Mr. McPherson is a state and federal court expert in complex cases, including nuclear.  Onepower plant case went to the Utah Supreme Court, and a helicopter crash in Idaho killing allonboard went to the Idaho Supreme Court last August.  In both cases, Mr. McPherson's ex-pert work was key in both cases being decided in the favor of the legal team he was amember of.

in Hawaii as a Navy and Commercial diver he was on the Mayor’s Subcommittee for divingsafety.  Mr. McPherson has also been a pilot for many decades.  He was an owner of aFixed Base Operator in San Diego, which had a flying school up thru Airline Transport.  Healso served for three years as the Safety Officer at the North Island Navy Flying Club at theNorth Island Naval Air Station.  Mr. McPherson is often asked to speak on design, qualityassurance, operations, maintenance, safety, security, and training for nuclear power.

Hearst CastleFrom experiencing what life was like as a guestof W. R. Hearst to exploring his personal collec-tion of rare and ancient works of art, encounterthe majesty and beauty of this historical treasurefirst-hand with a guided Hearst Castle tour. Wil-liam Randolph Hearst started to build a fabulousestate on his ranchland overlooking the village ofSan Simeon in 1919. He called the estate "LaCuesta Encantada" - Spanish for The EnchantedHill. By 1947, the hilltop complex included a twin-towered main building, three sumptuous guest-houses, and 127 acres of terraced gardens, foun-tains, and pools.

Mission PlazaThe San Luis Obispo Mission Plaza had its re-cent beginning in 1971 with the closing ofMonterey Street in front of the mission. In theearliest days, the dusty street was the plaza.Thanks to the foresight of the people and leadersof San Luis Obispo, what we enjoy today is awonderful glimpse of the history and natural envi-ronment in the midst of the "Happiest City in theUnited States.”

Montana De Oro State ParkThis park features rugged cliffs, secluded sandybeaches, coastal plains, streams, canyons, andhills, including 1,347-foot Valencia Peak. Natural-ists and backpackers enjoy the solitude and free-dom found along the park's trails. There are alsomountain biking and equestrian trails. The best-known beach is Spooner's Cove, across from thecampground. The park's name, "Mountain ofGold," comes from the golden wildflowers thatbloom in spring. Wildlife in the park includesblack tailed deer and the black oystercatcher.The park includes primitive and equestrian camp-sites.

BeachesThe area around San Simeon and Cambria hassandy cove beaches, most of which are part ofHearst San Simeon State Park. Morro Bay andLos Osos are sister cities on Morro Bay near themiddle of the SLO coast. Nearby these cities areexcellent beaches in state parks including Mon-tana de Oro SP, Morro Bay SP, and Morro StrandState Beach. Pismo Beach and Avila Beach bothhave large sandy beaches with fishing piers jut-ting out from the center.

San Luis Obispo Elephant SealsIn 1990, just under two dozen elephant sealswere seen on the beach just south of the PiedrasBlancas lighthouse. Then their migration patternbegan to extend decisively. The next spring, morethan 400 seals were counted. After that, the pop-ulation continued to grow every year. Now about17,000 elephant seals call this beach their home.From San Simeon CA, head north from HearstCastle onto California Highway 1, for about fourand a half miles. Located just off the west side ofHighway 1, the parking lot is open to the publicand is just a short distance from the Boardwalkoverlooking the beach area and the elephantseals.
