First and foremost, I would like to thank you for your interest in Switzerland as a vibrant hub of digital innovation as well as in our buzzing startup ecosystem and thriving ICT industry. We are very proud to be given the unique opportunity to present to you our digital ideas, product solutions and visions as this year’s partner country of CeBIT. The world’s biggest b2b event in the digital world has become a key hub for the Swiss ICT sector in recent years.

You are surely aware of the fact that new technologies are spreading increasingly into our com-mercial, social and everyday lives. As always, when a revolution is underway, there are upsides and downsides to change. What are the opportunities and challenges of this development?

The speakerSince May 2013, Jonas Buchli has been the Assistant Professor for Agile and Dexterous Robotics at ETH Zurich. He holds a diploma in Electrical Engineering from ETH Zurich (2003) and a PhD from EPF Lausanne (2007). From 2007 to 2010, he was a post doctorand at the University of Southern California, where he acted as USC’s team leader for the DARPA Learning Locomotion challenge. From 2010–12, he was a team leader at the Italian Institute of Technology in Genova. In 2012, he was awarded the SNF Professorship Prize by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

The speakerAndreas Rüst (Dipl. El. Ing., Graduate Engineer of Electronics. ETH) is Professor for Internet of Things at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) in Winterthur, Switzerland. Being a team leader at the Institute of Embedded Systems, he has 20 years of industry experience in the fields of microcontroller chip design and the development of SHDSL modems. His main research areas include microcontroller systems, computer engineering and low-power wireless technologies.

The topicModern wireless embedded systems enable large networks of sensors, thus tremendously increasing the usability and, therefore, the value of individual objects. Clearly, the choice of an appropriate wireless technology is essential and often allows making nodes en-ergy-self-sufficient. The speakerAnton is a PhD student and research assistant at the Faculty of Informatics at USI. Before joining the PhD program at the Università della Svizzera Italiana, Anton was working in applied research groups in the mobile industry in North America, Western Europe and Asia gaining expertise in the areas of mobile human-computer interaction, user experience design, augmented reality and wearable devices. His research interests lie in understanding contemporary sharing practices of personal digital information and physical objects. The topicWinter sports like skiing and snowboarding are often group activities. Groups of skiers and snowboarders traditionally use folded paper maps or board-mounted larger-scale maps near ski lifts to aid decision making: which slope to take next, where to have lunch, or what hazards to avoid when going off-piste. He conducted research programs at various locations, including at the University of Karlsruhe, GE, the Computer Laboratory, University of Cambridge, U.K., the Computer Engineering and Networks Laboratory, ETH Zürich, CH, and the University of Federal Armed Forces, Munich, GE. Dr. Thomas Bocek holds a doctorate degree in Informatics from the University of Zurich. The speakerDr. Tom Sprenger, CTO, Dr. sc. techn. Swiss Federal Institute of Tech-nology (ETH), joined AdNovum in 2000. From 2002-2004, he was CEO of AdNovum Software Inc. in San Mateo, CA. After returning to Switzerland in 2007, he was promoted to Chief Information Officer (CIO) and a member of management. In this function, he built up the strategic business area IT Consulting. Since 2013, he has been in charge for the company’s technology strategy and security product development as Chief Technology Officer (CTO).

The speakerBeat Koch is a software engineer and an environmental consultant. After obtaining his PhD in software test automation, he worked on various projects as a software developer and tester. In 2010, he obtained a diploma in environmental consulting and commu-nications with a thesis on Green IT. Since then, he is involved with sustainability in all IT-related things by developing online tools, participating in projects and lecturing on the topic.

The topicMitigating climate change, protecting the environment and saving resources are major challenges. ICT plays a crucial role in managing risks and mitigating effects. ICT solutions can help reduce CO2 emissions and improve sustainability in the spheres of economy, ecology and society. The topicIn our keynote, we will present our vision of how the Web can transform brick and mortar classrooms into real-time bi-directional communication spaces connecting presenters with their audiences.
