Welcome / About What is virtualization? Impact on Small and Mid-Sized
Businesses Examples Summary Questions
What is Virtualization?
1:1 relationship between applications and hardware
Relevant cost metric = cost per server
Traditional Architecture• Legacy rule: Run only one
application per server because single application crashes resulting in OS or server failure
• Typical hardware utilization below 8% - wasteful
Traditional Server Build1 server per application
What is Virtualization?
Many:1 relationship between applications and hardware

Virtualized Server BuildMany applications – 1 server
Server Consolidation: • New rule: Run multiple applications
per physical server because OS/applications are isolated from one another
• Typical hardware utilization 80% - efficient

Two levels of Application Protection
High Availability
In the Event of hardware failure, the VM’s intelligently start on a safe piece of dedicated hardware. Downtime is greatly reduced, but not eliminated.
Fault Tolerance
Zero-downtime failover; VM’s are mirrored in real time and migrate off of failed servers.

Many:1 relationship between applications and hardware
Relevant cost metric = cost per application
Virtualized Server BuildMany applications – 1 server
Server Consolidation: • New rule: Run multiple applications
per physical server because OS/applications are isolated from one another
• Typical hardware utilization 80% - efficient
Example 1
Customer Profile: Small business has three servers that are out of warranty.
Needs:• New hardware that is supported• Phased approach to spread costs• Scalable for future
Example 2Example 1: Traditional/Physical
• 3 new physical servers• Significant labor costs for migration
Traditional Solution
3 New Servers $15,000.00
Labor $6,000.00
Total $21,000.00
Migrate each server, upgrade software.

New Servers
Example 2Example 1: VMware Virtualization
Virtual Solution
VMware Essentials Plus $495.00
1 New Server $5,000.00
Labor $1,000.00
Total $6,495.00
• Phased approach to spread costs Phase 1 only moves the existing servers to
virtual environment.
• Scalable for additional growth Separated servers from hardware, making
decisions easier. Can migrate applications without having to upgrade software.
Phase 1: P2V to new hardware
Example 2Example 1: VMware Virtualization
Phase 2: Increase CapacityAdd more VMsAdd a second physical server and shared storage

iSCSI Shared Storage
iSCSI Shared Storage
The Importance of Shared StorageShared Storage is a requirement for:
-High Availability-Fault Tolerance-Vmotion
Data must be available to all hosts, all the time. Local storage doesn’t make much sense if you want your workload to be portable.
Shared storage to be covered in the next presentation in greater detail… stay tuned
Example 2
Customer Profile: Fast growing company with 2 physical servers needs to upgrade to 6 total servers to support growth and needs high availability.
Needs:• Keep costs down• All Applications must have continuity in
event of HW failure at server level.• Scalable for additional growth
Example 2Example 2: Traditional/Physical
Almost double the cost and that doesn’t include maintenance and management costs!!!
• 10 new physical servers• $ Replication licensing
Traditional Solution
10 New Servers $50,000.00
Replication Software $20,000.00
Total $70,000.00
2 servers must be allocated for every application to provide high availability!

RedundantServers
Example 2Example 2: VMware Virtualization
Virtual Solution
VMware Essentials Plus $3,495.00
iSCSI Storage $20,000.00
2 New Servers $10,000.00
Total $33,495.00
iSCSI Shared Storage
• Keep costs low Buy 2 servers instead of 4, lower
maintenance and support costs.
• All Applications must have continuity in event of HW failure
HA (High Availability)
• Scalable for additional growth Servers have additional capacity, SAN can
be added to increase redundancy and storage.
Worksighted: Best Practice
Solution has many desirable characteristics:
-Highly Available -> Workloads can move seamlessly between physical servers
-Scalable -> CPU, Memory, and Storage can be increased with quickly and cost effectively
-Efficient -> Fewer servers are required to run the same workload. Use less power, take up less space etc.

Summary
Separates decisions regarding hardware and software Maximizes hardware utilization and capacity Reduces management, maintenance, power and cooling Provides scalability in terms of growth, redundancy and
recovery Proven solutions used by all types of organizations
