Welcome

Today’s ceremony marks a milestone for this, our fourteenth graduating class. This group of talented legal minds has spent the past three years immersed in a vast array of legal topics, while gaining crucial knowledge, skills and practical experience through a range of experiential learning opportunities. They leave us today ready for the bright and exciting future that awaits them. Equally as important as the skills they have acquired are the values our faculty and staff have sought to instill within them: a commitment to public service that will lead them to have a positive impact in the lives of others and in their communities, as well as a commitment to provide relief for those who are helpless, weak, outnumbered or victims of prejudice. I hope you will find this Virtual Commencement ceremony to be a meaningful and impressive celebration of the achievements of those who receive their degrees today. Thank supporting us as we continue our tradition of graduating the next generation of legal professionals. These graduates truly are the individuals who will shape the future of our state, our nation and our world.

-- Andrew L. Abrams Dean, Provost, and Professor of Law

Parents, family, friends - it is my honor to welcome each of you to this virtual celebration. Today marks the culmination of legal education for these graduating students. Each and every one of these students has shown great perseverance, which is a testament to their character and shows a drive to advance their legal education and become part of this honorable profession. Graduation from law school is a tremendous achievement, and I am proud to share this moment with all of you. This group of talented individuals is now adept with legal knowledge, equipped through practical experience for the rigors of the legal profession, and trained in the skills to facilitate a smooth transition. One of the incredible things about this school, and something of which I am honored to be part, is that each student, alumni, faculty and staff shows dedication to the founding motto: Pro Bono Populi. The dedication of time and effort toward the betterment of others throughout the community is a worthwhile proposition and something that will serve them well in their lives, both as attorneys and in general. Thank you all for celebrating the accomplishments of these graduates. These are future attorneys, community leaders, church leaders, and role models who will affect the lives of those around them. To our newest alumni – I look forward to seeing what the future holds for each of you. -- J. Edward Bell III President

Charleston School of Law

The Charleston School of Law is rooted in tradition, tracing its precedent to November 1825, when

a group of Charleston attorneys petitioned the South Carolina Legislature for a charter of

incorporation for the “creation of a regular Law Institute in the City of Charleston and the

annexation of a Law Library.” The following month, the Legislature granted Act No. 2379,

establishing “a Lecture-ship on the Law.” In February 1826, the Charleston Forensic Club began

offering lectures, essentially establishing the South’s first law school. That legacy continues today

through the Charleston School of Law.

In 2002, several prominent Charleston judges and attorneys began working to establish a new law

school that would serve as a community-centered institution offering a superior traditional and

experiential educational program led by a collegial faculty of the highest caliber. In 2003, the S.C.

Commission on Higher Education granted a license to allow the school to begin accepting students.

The Charleston School of Law opened its doors on August 17, 2004, with 133 full-time students and

64 part-time students. In the fall of 2005 and 2006, the school welcomed its second and third classes

of students, bringing its enrollment to about 600 students. The school received provisional

accreditation from the American Bar Association on December 2, 2006. On August 4, 2011, the

school was fully accredited by the American Bar Association.

Charleston has played a pivotal role in the development of the rule of law in our country and has a

legal community with the highest professional reputation. Not only are Charleston School of Law

students able to take advantage of mentoring and externship programs offered in conjunction with

Charleston’s collegial, professional Bar, but they also benefit from a firsthand look at the study of

law in a city anchored by a historic, yet vital, downtown civic hub known as the Four Corners of

Law. Thus, the Charleston School of Law has reinvigorated the study of law in Charleston by

offering a rich, comprehensive program rooted in excellence.

We believe that better lawyers make better communities. The Charleston School of Law’s mission is

to make better lawyers by producing practice-ready graduates of high moral character and integrity

and instilling within them a commitment to public service. The Charleston School of Law is

committed to producing great lawyers for the greater good.

Candidates for Degrees

Juris Doctor (J.D.)

THE FOLLOWING LIST OF CANDIDATES FOR GRADUATION was prepared before final grades were

reported; inclusion in this listing does not constitute evidence of graduation. The listing of a name in

this program should not be construed as an indication that the person will, in fact, receive a degree

from the Charleston School of Law at this commencement. Conversely, the absence of a student’s

name from this list does not necessarily mean that the person will not be awarded a degree. Honors

for degree candidates are based on the cumulative grade point average on file at the time of printing.

Honors to be printed on the diploma will be based on the final cumulative grade point average on all

law school work. The following designations indicate the level of honors for degree candidates:

Academic Regalia

The academic regalia worn in today’s commencement trace their origins to those worn by students

and faculty at medieval European universities. These regalia have remained largely unchanged since

the 16th century. Standards for colleges and universities in the United States were established in 1895

with the adoption of an intercollegiate code that specifies design and color appropriate for various

degrees. As in medieval times, the regalia worn on formal academic occasions denote the wearer’s

academic heritage.

Modern academic costume consists of three parts – the gown or robe, a headpiece and a hood.

The doctoral gown is full flowing and has large bell-shaped sleeves. It is trimmed with velvet panels

down the front and has velvet chevrons on the sleeves. While black is the predominant color for

doctoral gowns, the color purple traditionally represents law.

The Tudor bonnet, or “tam,” is the official headpiece of the Charleston School of Law and is

generally worn by those with doctoral professional degrees. This purple formal academic cap, which

dates from medieval times at Oxford University, consists of a stiff oval brim around a soft oval cloth

or velvet top. A gold cord ends in a tassel around the brim.

While the gown and headpiece denote the wearer’s level of education, it is the hood that adds

meaning and dimension to the academic costume. Changed little since medieval times, the hood is

worn falling from the shoulders down the back of the gown in a display of vivid color. It is edged in

velvet, which by its color denotes the field or discipline in which the wearer’s degree was earned. It

is lined in two colors of silk, which represent the college, university or school from which the degree

is earned. The Charleston School of Law hood is lined in Charleston green and gold and edged with

purple, denoting the discipline of law.

Commencement Cords

Honors may be designated by the wearing of a cord or a stole. The gold honor cord, draped from

the neck on the front of the gown, designates the wearer as an honors graduate. The navy blue

honor cord designates graduates who have completed 100 or more hours of pro bono service at the

Charleston School of Law. Other cords and adornments worn by students denote membership in

student organizations on campus.

Special Recognitions

The Charleston School of Law salutes its fourteenth graduating class, the Class of 2020. Relying on

the support and loyalty of these new alumni, the school looks to the future with great hope and

confidence, as it appreciates the past devotion and hard work put forth by today’s graduates to

create an atmosphere of excellence. The following members of the Class of 2020 are recognized for

their achievement and service as follows:

WILLIAM BENNETT REGAN AWARD

This award is presented annually to the graduating student who best represents the leadership and

commitment exhibited by William Bennett Regan as Charleston Corporation Counsel, 1975–2003.

ARTHUR G. HOWE TRIAL ADVOCACY AWARD

This award, funded by the American College of Trial Lawyers, is named in honor of the late Arthur

G. Howe. It is presented to the graduating student who best exemplifies excellence in trial advocacy.

OUTSTANDING PRO BONO SERVICE

A core value at the Charleston School of Law is to instill within its graduates a commitment to

public service. Toward that end, each graduate is required to perform a minimum of 30 hours of pro

bono (“for the public good”) service to the community. This requirement allows students to work

with attorneys practicing in the public interest legal sector. We salute the following students for

performing 100 or more hours of public service.

The Forensic Club

In November 1825, a group of Charleston attorneys were granted a charter by the State of South Carolina to establish a “Lecture-ship on the Law.” In February 1826, the Forensic Club offered lectures in the law to begin what essentially was the South’s earliest law school.

In Memoriam Jonathan Victor Hughes

March 8, 1989 – December 5, 2019

Jonathan Victor Hughes, known as “Jon,” was a second-year student at the Charleston School of

Law. In his brief time at the law school, he quickly developed devoted friends and colleagues in

whom he inspired fierce loyalty and deep affection. Jon brought his unique wit, light heartedness,

and caring nature to any situation, was an excellent student, and a joy to teach. A Charleston

transplant, Jon immediately engaged his law school community and was a fixture in his local

neighborhood on Charleston’s East Side. A true patriot, he devoted his adult life in service of his

country, in caring for his community, and in pursuit of his love for the law. Jon died at his home

during December final exams after a short illness where after his friends responded with

characteristic loyalty and commitment.

Jon was born in Cleveland, Ohio and grew up in Woodlands, Texas. An Eagle Scout, Jon attended

Texas Tech University before enlisting in the Army where he served in the infantry for four years.

He reached the rank of Specialist and was based out of Fort Benning, Georgia as a member of the

3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment with whom he served in Afghanistan. After being honorably

discharged in 2014, he received his bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies from Armstrong State

University a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of South Carolina-Beaufort and

entered Charleston School of Law in August 2018.

Jon’s conscientiousness, leadership, and service left a legacy that continues to influence his

classmates and the Charleston School of Law community.

Charleston School of Law Foundation Founded 2003

The Charleston School of Law Foundation wishes to extend its warmest congratulations to the

newest graduates, their families, and their friends. The Foundation’s mission is to encourage and

assist the study, teaching, promoting and research of the rule of law at the Charleston School of

Law. This is accomplished in various ways including the award of scholarships, grants, and

fellowships for need and merit, which have been created by individuals, groups, and organizations,

who want to honor a particular individual or cause. Accordingly, the Foundation invites named

scholarships and endowed awards from alumni, students, their families, companies, and individuals.

In fact, many of today’s graduates are the recipients of these awards.

Those interested in creating a scholarship should contact Len Young, Executive Director, at

843.377.4910 or write to her at [email protected]. As a 501(c)(3)

nonprofit organization, donations are tax deductible. And, again, graduates, please accept our
