With its torch Illuminated, the flames represent enlightenment, tolerance,and hope imparted by the institution’s drive to spark coherent and ongoingenrichment. The unwavering flame starts small but grows as the learningnever stops. The grasping hand shows that within reach are vast resources and connectivity provided by our core foundation in cyber education.The shield represents strength and longevity, and the symmetrical line upon it draws equal balance to tradition and endless possibilities. The Latin phrase “libertas aditum” means access to freedom. Since 2000, the school’s students have been free to choose how they learn best. Olive branches flank the shield signifying our school, which was born of necessity and openly embraces diverse students from every county and every school district within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Deep navy blue stands as the seal’s primary color, characterizing the school’s strength and reliability. Gold, black, platinum, and bronze represent the precious elements of wisdom, tradition, truth, and determination.

A Message to the PA Cyber Class of 2021From Brian Hayden, Chief Executive Officer

Dear Class of 2021,

Today we celebrate so much of what is good in life. We are celebrating your graduation from high school. We are celebrating the support of family, friends, and the people of PA Cyber who have worked with you to ensure you could graduate. We are celebrating navigating our way—as individuals and as a school—past the uncertainties and challenges of the pandemic. We are celebrating your ability to adapt and persevere throughout the past fifteen months so that for each of you “the learning never stopped.”

For the past two decades, students and families like you have made PA Cyber the very special school that it has become. As we celebrate our twentieth anniversary, it is important to recognize that this success is the collective history of everybody who has been a part of PA Cyber since we first opened our doors in 2000. And you have become a part of that history.

To you and your families, I wish nothing but the best as you begin the next stage of your lives. Thank you for helping us maintain the tradition of excellence that each of you exemplifies, especially under the most unusual of circumstances.

The PA Cyber StoryA Small Steel Mill Town Pushes The Boundaries Of 21st Century Education

In 1985, the borough of Midland, PA had to close its high school following the shutdown of Crucible Steel, the town’s main employer. If that had been the end of the story, the woes of a 12-block-long steel mill town in western Pennsylvania would be a forgotten footnote in history. Instead, the town fought back, and in the process created an educational industry and a new kind of school fora new century.

After Crucible Steel closed, Midland families moved away, businesses closed and school tax revenues dried up. The high school was shuttered and its 125 students were shuttled first to a neighboring Pennsylvania school district, then later across state lines to a high school in Ohio after no nearbyin-state district would agree to accept the Midland students on a long-term tuition basis.

The rejection of its children by surrounding school districts was hurtful and embittering, but it motivated the Midland Borough School District to search for a secure educational alternative – one that couldn’t be cancelled by the results of a host district’s school board election.

Speaking in nearby Aliquippa, PA, Gov. Tom Ridge suggested in an informal remark that Midland solve its problem with a charter school under a new educational reform law, Act 22, that he had pushed for and the General Assembly passed in 1997. Funded with a $25,000 state grant, a committee began researching charter schools as well as other alternatives. At one meeting a speaker suggested a

“cyber charter school” that would teach children at home over the Internet and PA Cyber was born. PA Cyber opened in the fall of 2000 with a staff of seven employees who were told it was not known when or if they would be paid. Expecting 50 students from Midland and the region, the fledging school was nearly overwhelmed when more than 500 students enrolled from all parts of the commonwealth. Enrollment doubled the next year and kept growing beyond anyone’s wildest expectations.

The success of PA Cyber re-drew the educational map in Pennsylvania. Suddenly school choice was an option for every family no matter where they lived. Over the past 15 years, PA Cyber pioneered (and other online schools have copied) the innovative technologies and methods that have kept it at the forefront of online education, while keeping the needs of students and their families at the center of its mission. Even today, as the school, its staff, board and administration face new challenges that must be overcome, and embrace new opportunities to push the boundaries of education.

With the success of PA Cyber, prosperity is returning once again to the town of Midland, its economy based not on steel, but on educational innovation. The vision and spirit of Midland’s superintendent and school board, and the dedication of the founding members, not only launched a school and saved a town – they have challenged all American public schools to provide their students with an education worthy of the 21st Century.
