SUPERINTENDENT OF THE VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE.

AMERICAN STATISTICAL ARITHMETIC—Designed for Academies

and Schools: By Francis H. Smith, A. M., Superintendent and Professor of

Mathematics in the Virginia Military Institute ; late Professor of Mathematics in

Hampden Sydney College, and formerly Assistant Professor in the United States

Military Academy, West Point, and R. T. W. Duke, late Assistant Professor

of Mathematics in Virginia Military Institute. Third edition.

Extract from a letter of Professor Powers, late of Virginia University.

I consider it decidedly the best Arithmetic I have seen, not only as regards the

valuable statistical information it contains, but also in its arrangement, and the very

clear and simple explanations of the rules which it gives.

It strikes us as an important improvement, and one which should not be neglected.

We hope the Trustees of the Common Schools will give it their serious attention.

Cincinnati Gazette.

INTRODUCTION TO SMITH AND DUKE'S ARITHMETIC. ByFrancis H. Smith, A. M.—It was with much pleasure that I examined the

" American Statistical Arithmetic," by Smith and Duke, and an introduction to

the same, by Francis H. Smith, A. M., both published by you. They are works

of more than ordinary merit. With clear and definite Rules, they convey a large

amount of valuable information, not usually within the reach of students of Arith-

metic. Their general introduction will aid the cause of sound instruction in the

schools and academies of our country. J. H. BROWN, A. M.,

Principal Zane Street Grammar School, Philadelphia.

REMARKS.

The Virginia Military Institute was established, and is supported

by the State of Virginia. An arsenal containing 30,000 stand of arms is

located here, which was formerly guarded by a company of enlisted soldiers,

at an annual expense of about $6,000. In 1S39, this appropriation was

transferred to the support of a company of cadets, who, in addition to their

duties as a guard, should also be placed under a course of instruction, upon

the basis of the United States Military Academy at West Point. Upon

this new system the Institute has been in successful operation for eleven

years. The cadets admitted consist of two classes, State and Pay cadets.

The Institute supplies to the State cadet his board, tuition, fuel, lights, books,

mattrass, medical attendance and stationer}T; and in consideration thereof,

he is required to teach two years after graduation. The Pay cadet is at

his own expense, which averages $275 per year, for every charge, including

clothing. The State cadets are selected from those who are unable to bear

their own expenses. The institution has always had as many pupils as its

buildings would accommodate, and numbers thirty-two State and eighty-

eight Pay cadets. Applications are made by letter to the Superintendent

prior to the first of July, each year, and appointments are made for both

classes of cadets, by the Board of Visiters, respect being had to their due

apportionment among the several districts of the State.

The Literary Fund of the State contributes $1,500 per year to the Insti-

tute for the education of teachers, and the State has received tuition fees

from the pay cadets to the amount of $15,000 since its organization, which

sum is applied to the increase of the number of State cadets, and to the

enlargement of the accommodations of the Institute.

Cadets are assigned to classes according to their previous preparation, ex-

cept that no Cadet can enter a higher class than the second.

The Cadets are daily occupied in military exercises at such hours as not

to interfere with their regular studies.

10

EXPLANATION OF CONDUCT ROLL.

All offences against Orders or Regulations are recorded.

These offences' are divided into seven grades ; each of which

comprises offences of nearly the same degree of criminality.

The degree of criminality of offences of each grade is ex-

pressed by a number, as follows :

Offences of the 1st grade by 10

Do cc 2d : 8

Do a 3d 5

Do a 4th ': 4

Do a 5th '• 3

Do tt 6th : 2

Do a 7th 5 1

For each year (after the first year) that a Cadet has been a

member of the Institute, his offences are made to count more,

by adding to the number expressing the degree of criminality,

of each offence, one-sixth for the second year—and one-third

for the third year.

At the end of the Academic year, these numbers are added

up, and the sum thus obtained is that found in the column of

{ demerit? The demerit for the graduating class is estimated

for their whole term.

When a Cadet has more than 200 demerit in any one year,

he is dismissed.

The Board of Directors of the Literary Fund having examineu uie Introduction

to Smith and Duke's American Statistical Arithmetic, composed by Francis H.Smith, Esq., Superintendent and Professor of Mathematics in the Virginia Military

Institute, take pleasure in recommending the work, especially for the purpose for

which it is designed, " to prepare beginners for the study of the more advanced part

of the science.'' The plan of inculcating valuable statistical information in the illus-

tration of arithmetical rules, is not only novel and attractive, but useful, and is doubt-

less calculated to make a strong impression on the minds of youth.

A true extract from the minutes.

(Signed,) J. BROWN, Jr., Second Auditor.

Office of the Literary Fund Board, Va.,\

August 5, 1847.J

Besides the advantages which the former work possesses, as an arithmetic, it con-

tains a large amount of the most important information which a pupil can learn in

relation to our country. The introduction is made on the same plan, and is a hand-

some, and promises to be a useful work.

Episcopal Recorder.

These works are prepared with a degree of ability fully worthy of the reputation

which their author has acquired in the different posts which he has occupied. Therules are given with remarkable clearness, and the arrangement follows the natural

order of the subject. But the feature which distinguishes these works most from all

Others on arithmetic, is the use of the statistics of the country as examples in the

sums under the different rules. This gives the pupil at once a practical application

for his arithmetical knowledge, and a mass of most important information, which

many never acquire, and which he learns almost without an effort.

Pennsylvania

Inquirer.

Mr. Smith is well known from having occupied several places as Professor of

Mathematics, and being at present at the head of the Virginia Military Institute;

and these volumes will not disappoint those who have hitherto entertained a high

opinion of his abilities. The rules and explanations are clear and simple, and the

arrangement appropriate and natural. The term statistical is applied to them, be-

cause the examples consist principally of the most important statistics of the country.

This feature combines the advantages of a practical application for the rules as soon

as they are learned, and of instruction gained in a highly useful branch of knowledge,

without making it a separate study. The introduction is designed for beginners;

and its superior mechanical execution, as well as its merits of authorship, we should

think adapt it admirably to prepare them for use of the larger work, or any other of

its class.

PennsyIranian.

In these works it is designed not only to give the pupils the advantages of a clear

and simple presentation of arithmetic, but also that of having in their exercises a mass

of information, which may be as important to them as the exercises themselves. It is

not a little curious to observe how ignorant those who have even more than ordinary

intelligence, are in regard to the general statistics of their country ; and yet a know-

ledge of them is, in almost every case, indispensable to guide us in considering com-

mercial or political questions, if we wish to judge of them correctly. In the volumes

before us, not only is this information communicated, but the use of it in forming the

lesson, gives the learner a better and more practical application for his rules than he

finds in ordinary manuals.

KEY TO SMITH AND DUKE'S AMERICAN STATISTICALARITHMETIC. Prepared by William Forbes, Assistant Professor of

Mathematics in the Virginia Military Institute.

SMITH'S ALGEBRA.—An Elementary Treatise "on Algebra: prepared for

the use of the Cadets of the Virginia Military Institute, and adapted to the

present state of mathematical instruction in the Schools, Academies and Col-

leges of the United States. By Francis H. Smith, A. M., Superintendent

and Professor of Mathematics of the Virginia Military Institute ; late Profes-

sor of Mathematics in Hampden Sydney College; and formerly an Assistant

Professor in the United States Military Academy, West Point ; Author of

American Statistical Arithmetic, etc. 12mo. Sheep.

This work is designed to present as complete an Elementary course of Alge-

bra, as the time devoted to the study of Mathematics in the colleges of our coun-

try will allow ; while it will be equally within the comprehension of the pupil of

the High School or Academy. In preparing this work, the Author has adopted those explanations and demon-

strations which an experience of many years in teaching, and a careful compari-

son of standard authors, have shown to be best. Without following the system

of any other writer, he has derived important aid from the works of Gamier,

Bezout, Reynaud, Bourdon, Lacroix, Francceur, Euler, Hutton,^ Thomson,

Goodwyn, Scott, and the Encyclopedia Metropolitana. Many of his examples

have been selected from the valuable edition of Hutton's Mathematics, by Pro-

fessor Rutherford, of the Royal Military Academy. Woolwich.

Extract of a Letter from Professor Powers to Col. F. H. Smith, Superintend-

ent of Virginia Military Institute.

I have been using your Algebra for nearly twelve months, and can truly say,

that it answers my purpose better than any other I am acquainted with. It pre-

sents all the leading principles of the science, in a concise and simple form, and

especially those higher principles which give beginners most trouble, so that I have

never had my classes master them before with so little difficulty. Hoping that

the book may meet with the patronage it deserves,

I remain yours, very respectfully,

(Signed,) PIKE POWERS,Late Professor in bniversity of Va.

A new Algebra, by Col. Francis H. Smith, the highly efficient and esteemed

Superintendent of our Military Institute, at Lexington, will require no eulogy of

ours, in view of the rapid and entire success of the Author's previous work, the

Statistical Arithmetic. This work has all the prestige a city publisher can give

it, and Virginians have thus all they demand, before giving their encouragement

to home productions. It is bound in the best possible style for those who will use

it, and that is no small consideration in these days of paper and muslin. No Vir-

ginia school boy will lose much by being minus Bonnycastle, and plus Smith.—

The Virginian.

SMITH'S BIOT. An Elementary Treatise on Analytical Geometry. Trans-

lated from the French of J. B. Biot. By Francis H. Smith, A. M., Revised

edition.

The work of M. Biot has more to recommend it than the mere style of com-

position, unexceptionable as that is. The mode in which he has presented the

subject is so peculiar and felicitous, as to have drawn from the Princeton Review,

the high eulogium upon his work, of being " the most perfect scientific gem to be

found in any language."
