Education (BOE) approved the Mathematics Standards of Learning
2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning The Process
Focus on the mathematical knowledge and skills
Provide a framework for instructional programs
Set reasonable targets and expectations
Teachers are encouraged to go beyond the standards and select instructional strategies and assessment methods
appropriate for their students.
2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning The Goals
2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning The Goals
Five goals…that all students are
becoming mathematical problem solvers communicating mathematically reasoning mathematically making mathematical connections using mathematical representations to
model and interpret practical situations.
Rigor has been increased Repetition has been decreased Students will need to apply content
specified in previous years’ courses
2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning The Changes
2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning Curriculum Framework
The BOE approved the proposed revised mathematics K-12 Curriculum Framework on July 23, 2009.
Public comment on the K-12 Curriculum Framework has just been completed with recommended changes to be presented to the BOE on October 22, 2009.
2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning Curriculum Framework
Defines the mathematics content knowledge, skills, and understandings
Provides additional guidance to school divisions and teachers
Assists teachers in their lesson planning Provides all with greater specificity of
minimum content requirements
