Dr. Stephen Mansfield is a local historian, archivist, and author. Originally from Illinois, he came to Virginia for his education and graduated from the College of William and Mary before obtaining his Ph.D. from University of Virginia in 1968. Dr. Mansfield remained in Virginia, joining the history faculty at Virginia Wesleyan College (now University - VWU). At VWU, he became an academic dean and was instrumental in establishing their Local History Collection, where he remains a curator. A past president of the Princess Anne County/Virginia Beach Historical Society, Dr. Mansfield has written numerous books on the history of Princess Anne County/Virginia Beach and VWU. He is currently a member of the Board of Governors as well as a volunteer archivist at VWU.

This 224-page hardcover book includes over 300 pictures. It traces the history of the Princess Anne County and Virginia Beach, from the time Englishmen landed here enroute to establish Jamestown, to the present. Brief descriptions of the contributions made by many citizens bring a personal element to this outstanding book.
