I thought as you got older, the years were supposed to be shorter. I wish everyone good luck in finalizing your courses for the spring and getting ready for graduation, which is the ultimate goal for our students. Our conference last October went very well in the Roanoke Valley. We had an outstanding presentation and discussion with Chief Chris Perkins of the Roanoke City Police Department concerning innovative programs that he has implemented to reduce crime in the city of Roanoke. I think he and the city of Roanoke are models of community oriented policing and how the police departments and the community must work together to reduce crime. He was also joined by Dr. Isaac Van Patten of Radford University’s Criminal Justice Department who is working with the Roanoke City Police department as a crime analyst consultant and Mr. Sherman Lea who is a member of the Virginia Parole Board and Roanoke City Council. Hopefully, Mr. Lea will be the new mayor of Roanoke after the election in May. I was very pleased to see new members from Virginia Western Community College (Keith Johnson), Mary Baldwin University (Beth Easterling), and Ferrum College (Felicia Burnette). It is really nice to see new professionals in the field and what they have to offer. It was also great to see Doc Weiss from Wytheville Community College who I had not seen in several years. Hopefully, this October we can continue the theme of bringing new members to the organization and resurrecting older members who have been on the sidelines for a while. The hotel accommodations were perfect for our meeting with the informal Blue Ridge Lounge on Thursday evening and the meeting space on Friday as well as the lunch that was included. Also, the dinner at Montano’s on Thursday evening allowed for a little time away from the hotel with a very pleasant atmosphere and top quality food. We finished off the conference on Friday afternoon by touring the Western Virginia Regional Jail. According to our minutes, our Fall 2016 meeting is scheduled for October 6 and 7. FAMOUS CRIME AUTHOR PAYS VISITBrian C. Levin addressed students and others at Piedmont Virginia Community College recently. There was an excellent turnout for this prominent educator and author.

President’s Corner

Campus safety, security under microscope

Greetings VACJE Members: You may recall in the

Summer 2007 VACJE newsletter (President’s Corner “We Are All Hokies”) I had committed to the following:

(1) attend a virtual forum on “Advanced Violence Risk Assessment,

(2) participate in a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training class,

(3) lend support to campus security personnel and

(4) watch for “red fl ags” (campus danger signs) that could lead to a disaster.

Well, I’m three for four. Although I have not been able to locate a CERT training class, I’ll keep looking! The December “violence risk assessment” course presented by James Cawood was excellent and drove home the point that some folks out there in our society might just be thinking that they will have to kill you in order to control you.

If you will e-mail me, I’ll be glad to send you a 28-page document, furnished at the virtual seminar, which includes an Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP) “Model Violence Risk Assessment Process.”

Linda Jones was featured March 20 on the popular A&E series “Crime 360.”

A&E producers will provide viewers with an inside view of Cleveland Police Department’s homicide unit.

One aspect of A&E's production is their use of a 360 degree Lyca Camera which logs various crime scenes.

Jones can be seen processing crime scene evidence. By the time this newsletter is published, Linda will have “come and gone"”from Paramount Studio to see fi rst-hand

the proverbial “fi lm cuttings on the production studio fl oor.”

The title of the A&E show featuring crime scene and homicide personnel from the Cleveland PD is “Crime 360.” If you go to A&E’s Web site to view “Crime 360,” you can watch lead homicide detective

Wally Everett and Detective Mike Smith work a crime scene where a body lies hidden between some hedges and the porch of the victim's grandmother’s house. The victim, a male, is face down.

Beth Easterling, PhDAssistant Professor and Co-Director of the Criminal Justice Program With a background in both sociology and criminology, it is important for me to stay connected to my sociological roots while being involved in educating our future workers and leaders in the criminal justice system. I also prefer teaching in a setting where I can get to know students on an individual basis to provide more personalized support. Mary Baldwin College’s Criminal Justice Program, housed within the Sociology Department, is a natural fit for my areas of expertise and career goals. My research has primarily focused on corrections and theory, with a dedication to exploring how incarceration impacts families. I enjoy teaching courses on a wide variety of criminological topics and using my research to bring the classroom to life. I am excited about joining the Mary Baldwin faculty as I have the opportunity to be part of a program that combines strong practical training with a solid liberal arts foundation, both of which I feel are imperative educational components for students to become successful leaders in the criminal justice com-

munity. As a woman in a male-dominated field, I welcome the opportunity to be involved in the women’s residential college so that I can share my passion for criminology with women interested in breaking ground in the field of criminal justice.

“A couple of weeks ago I was an invitee at the usmc warfighting lab’s futures directorate on a topic I wish cops thought more about: “Information in the future urban environment.” cool stuff. for the past couple of years I’ve been a member of the “federal foresight community of Interest” (http://slideplayer.com/slide/5275464/), representing the fbI’s futures working group. mostly managers from across the federal government, including the militaries and some of the 3-letter agencies. they’re smart folks facing very tough futures. pos t - re t i remen t f rom the waynesboro police department, I’m “director of Administration” for the wpd Auxiliary. Iow, I have a license to putter, vex and disrupt. fortunately, the pd remains very tolerant. post-retirement from blue u I’m still adjuncting and puttering on various committees. still fun there, too. As for retirement, I recommend it!”

Mary Baldwin Criminal Justice Changes and Students Travel to London in May 2016

Chief (Ret.) Douglas L. Davis / Dr. Beth Easterling

Dr. Beth Easterling

In the fall semester of 2016, Beth Easterling joined the Mary Baldwin College faculty as an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice. She notes that the program at MBC was a perfect fit for her interests and goals! Beth shares, “I am excited about joining the Mary Baldwin faculty as I have the opportunity to be part of a program that combines strong practical training with a solid liberal arts foundation, both of which I feel are imperative educational components for students to become successful leaders in the criminal justice community. While my research has primarily focused on how incarceration impacts families, I enjoy teaching courses on a wide variety of criminological topics and using my research to bring the classroom to life. As a woman in a male-dominated field, I welcome the opportunity to be involved in the women’s residential college so that I can share my passion for criminology with women interested in breaking ground in the field of criminal justice.”

Big Changes

Mary Baldwin College is officially changing to Mary Baldwin University at the end of August this year. As part of the change, schools are being re-organized. Criminal Justice will move from the School of Arts and Sciences to the School of Business and Professional Studies. This move will give tremendous growth potential for the Criminal Justice Program while keeping a strong liberal arts core. With the resources available through SBPS, we hope to strengthen our online program. To attract students who already work in the field, we are adding a business emphasis and modifying our internship requirements for those students.

Study Abroad

During May Term 2016, students from the Criminal Justice Department and the English Department made a two week trip to London. A highlight of the trip was the extraordinary tour the students received at The Metropolitan Police Heritage Centre. The museum curator, a retired Metro Police Officer, allowed the students to handle artifacts used in policing London

Chief (Ret.) Douglas L. Davis / Dr. Beth Easterling during the 1800’s to include trying on period uniforms for women in policing. Of particular importance to the history of policing, the curator brought out Sir Robert Peel’s walking cane. Other activities included interaction with active duty police officers, a visit to the Clink Museum and a Jack the Ripper Tour. Other cultural activities included the Tower of London, St. Paul’s, The Naval Observatory, Windsor Castle, The Roman Baths, Stonehenge, a Romeo and Juliet play at the Globe Theater and a day trip to Paris.
