VIPNEWS > NOVEMBER 2012
It’s been a busy month – since the last News
I have been to to Tampere via Helsinki to
attend Music & Media, then after a few
days in a warmer than expected Finland,
then after a day back in bracing Brighton I
Eurostar’d (such a civilised way to travel!) to
Paris for the MaMA Event where I met up
with the VIP team. (Unfortunately I learnt
too late that the Rolling Stones were playing
in a small club in the City, for an affordable
€12, but it appears that they managed to
have a good time without me somehow…)
As Manfred Tari and I returned in one piece
(that’s each you understand!) you can read
the event reports in this issue.
We have decided to make a slight change in
the publication date of VIP News – till now
we have put out the Newsletter late in the
month, but this changes with this edition
which would technically have been the
October issue, but now this and future issues
will appear early in the month, so this is now
the November News. All clear? Please let us
know if this makes any difference to your
enjoyment ! If the Mayans can mess about
with the calendar then why shouldn’t we?!
The number of this edition – 151 – suddenly
rang bells with me, and I recalled what I had
considered to be a lost night and day in New
York many years ago where I was introduced
to the joys (?) of Bacardi 151 by my friend and
host Willy Baer. Now this is liquor that should
be either treated with the utmost respect, or
avoided like the plague! It is an over proof
rum, with an unbelievable alcohol content of
75.5%; when you take into account that the
usual content of a strong rum is 35%–40%,
you get an idea of the damage it can do. The
bottle also carries multiple warnings stating
that it should not be ignited or exposed to an
open flame! Now Willy was (and I presume
and hope still is) a very large black man who
consumed this stuff like water, whereas I, a
then much slighter Brit with long hair and
a reasonable beer tolerance, should have
known better. I’ve only just recalled a surreal
walk down 7th Avenue in the early hours of
the morning with no real idea where I was
going, where I met a succession of ladies
who seemed particularly keen to offer me
some form of short-term accommodation
– how friendly I thought through a blurred
haze…. Beware the 151!
Right – sorry about that distraction, back to
the business of music business. Although
we’ve been sadly aware of recent economic
casualties in our industry, some areas
continue to make money. After taking this
year off, The Glastonbury Festival sold out
next year’s event in an astonishing time of
one hour and 40 minutes, without even
naming an act! Also the event seems to
have stayed immune from the problems that
much of the festival sector has faced with
newly published accounts showing steady
growth in the past four years and showing
2011 revenues of £32.2m, up 5.2 per cent
on a year earlier. However it has to be said
that Michael Eavis and his daughter Emily
and other Directors still take out reasonably
modest profits. Also should any of you have
a spare $10 billion you might want to give
Philip Anschutz a call as he’s keen to sell off
his Entertainment Group, better known as
AEG.
So – before you head off to count your
money Ladies and Gentlemen – The News!

Staff Movements in UK Festival Market Allan McGowan [email protected]
There has been a slight outbreak of ‘Musical
Chairs’ in the UK Festival Market; Nata-
sha Haddad, previously a stalwart of The
Great Escape leaves to work on the Latitude
Festival for Festival Republic, while Adam
Ryan replaces her as the Great Escape Festival
Programmer for the MAMA Group.
Haddad will join Festival Republic on 31 Oct,
whilst at the MAMA Group she worked
on various festivals, including Wilderness,
Lovebox and especially The Great Escape, as
well as promoting gigs for Mean Fiddler, the
Company once run by Melvin Benn MD of
Festival Republic, now part of MAMA.
Ryan has ten years promotions and booking
experience and has previously worked for
MAMA promoting artists at UK club to theatre
level venues, and programming new talent
stages at both TGE and MAMA’s Lovebox
festival. Ryan will programme the 2013 Great
Escape, which will take place in Brighton from
16-18 May.
Festival Republic has also announced the
departure of a long-term employee. Neil
Pengelly joined what was then Mean Fiddler
in 1990, and built up the success of Reading
Festival from 1994, along with its twin event
in Leeds. His replacement has not yet been
announced .

Music & Media 2012Allan McGowan [email protected]
This 23rd edition of Music & Media attracted over 700 representatives
of music and related industries from Finland and abroad. Over the
three conference days, the event offered seminars, workshops,
keynotes and celebrity interviews, involving over 170 panelists
and other speakers. I’ve attended this event several times and was
particularly aware of more international attendants at this edition.
A cooperation with the Baltic Institute of Finland resulted in a special
program based within the conference focusing on the Baltics and
Russia . The aim was to boost the co-operation between the Finnish ,
Baltic and Russian operators. I attended the ‘Doing Business in Russia ’
conference and learnt a lot that I didn’t know about the music
business in the World’s biggest country.
For instance, much as we in the West tend to be somewhat smug
about the power of our leading artists abroad it puts things into
proportion to learn that international artists only account for 10%
of the live music promoted in Russia. Ilya Bortnuk of Light Music
Promotion , based in St.Petersburg, presented this and many other
enlightening facts about a gradually expanding market.
Moscow was represented on the panel by Dmitry Zaretsky of Russia’s
biggest promoters SAV Entertainment, along with Pavel Kamakin – of

Panel in Finland, Doing Business in Russia. Photo Musiikkimedia
16 Tons Club and UMC Agency, and Irina Shcherbakova of the Caviar
Lounge Company. Jouni Markkanen of KingFoo Entertainment and
Live Nation’s Richie Mattila represented Helsinki.
Full Steam presented the Lost in Music showcase festival – Juha Kyrro’s
Company also went on to triumph in various categories in the Finnish
Music Awards presented at a Gala Dinner on the Saturday night. 120
artists appeared during the five nights in 16 venues around the city,
including Ebba Award winners (see listing in this issue), French Films.
The Finnish business and Government are going all out to help its
artists and music business Companies make their mark internationally .
We reported on the visit of the Culture Minister to London in the last
issue and the efforts being made to make inroads into the UK Market,
and next January’s Eurosonic will feature a ‘Focus on Finland’.
Acid Symphony Orchestra, Death Hawks, Eva & Manu, Lau Nau,
LCMDF , Mesak ft. Claws Costeau, Michael Monroe, Pertti Kurikan
Nimipäivät , Phantom, Satellite Stories, Sin Cos Tan, Siinai will show-
case in Groningen. In addition, four Finnish acts that previously
performed at Eurosonic Noorderslag have been added to the line-up:
Disco Ensemble, Don Johnson Big Band, Huoratron and Rubik.

VIPNEWS > NOVEMBER 2012
3 and ½ Editions of MaMA and Already a SuccessManfred Tari [email protected]
The pilot edition of the MaMA Event went
ahead as part of the festival, Printemps de
Bourges in 2009 before moving to Paris in
2010. MaMA is located in Pigalle, that area
of the French capital with the highest density
of erotic boutiques per sq kilometers.
MaMA Director Fernando Ladeiro Marques
reported significantly improved figures for
this third Paris edition, before speaking with
VIP News about this year’s event:
Festival Visitors: The global capacity of
the 18 venues is 7960 (+ 2000 for the free
concerts of ‘Live in Montmartre’) but, for the
public, we just offer 4660 places and we sold
4454 (it means 95,6% of the public capacity)
+ 2000 in Live in Montmartre.
The other places (3300) were reserved for the
professionals.
Professional Delegates: This year we
welcomed 3256 professionals (2448 last
year), including 253 journalists (156 last
year). Approximately 30% of these were
international professionals from 34 countries.
Are you pleased with the results of
MaMA 2012?
– Of course, for us it’s a real satisfaction
to see that, each year, more and more
professionals are coming. It means that the
French market is attractive and MaMA is a
perfect gateway.
Who are the main supporters for MaMA
in terms of public funding?
– The Ministry of Culture, the City of Paris
and the county of Ile-de-France are our major
public partners. But we are supported too by
all the professional organizations, including
Adami, Sacem, FCM, CNV, Spedidam and
SPPF.
Was it difficult to apply for and to obtain
public funding?
Yes, it’s more and more difficult. The crisis is
here and Culture is not always the priority .
But we are very glad to see that, even if the
situation is complicated, our partners have
supported us since the first edition and their
support is bigger every year. Our partners
understood how MaMA is important for
the French market and how Paris becomes a
centre for exchanges in the music business.
How many people are working on MaMA
and how long does it take to prepare the
conference?
It’s a small team. We are 5 people working
for 6 or 7 months. More people come on
board one or two months before, and during
the event, we are approximately 200 people,
which is not so many!
MaMA Conference
VIPNEWS > NOVEMBER 2012
Could you please explain the booking
procedures for the festival program?
We had 90 concerts this year and we
got more than 1000 applications (30%
from abroad). We choose artists with a
professional position in their countries, those
with a record company , a booking agency, a
manager, and with a potential for export, of
course, it’s always a subjective choice. The
objective is to offer the artists the possibility
of playing in front of many professional and
to export their music through concerts, tours,
distribution etc. We choose some artists
directly and some are proposed by their
booking agency or label or others.
How was it that Aurélie Filippetti
showed up at MaMA 2012?
Our Culture Minister needed to talk to the
professionals of the music industry because
over these last months there have been
a lot of decisions that professionals don’t
understand . Last year there was the project
of CNM, a new organisation for music in
France; all the French professionals were
excited by the project and she decided to
cancel it and to make new propositions. She
chose MaMA because she knew that all the
French music business were present. It was
for her the best place to talk and for MaMA it
was very important for our credibility.

Jens Michow re-elected as bdv President at Annual ConferenceAllan McGowan [email protected]
Over one hundred presenters, agents
and managers met up in Hamburg at the
Reeperbahn Festival last month for the
Annual Conference of the bdv – the Federal
Association of Event Management.
The theme was “Nothing remains as it was”.
The association carried out elections for the
Board of Directors, which saw Jens Michow
unanimously voted in as President, for his 9th
term in office after 27 years.
“Naturally, I am very pleased at this
unanimous verdict, for I am very happy
to continue with this remit,” commented
Michow on his re-election.
“As, however, I do not, as against possible
other conjectures, intend to celebrate a 40-
year jubilee in my position as Managing
bdv-President , I made it clear before the
election the extent to which the association
could reckon with me in the future.”
Michow went on to say that he, insofar
as desired , would be available for this
and one further tenure. And he will do
this only under the condition that outline
conditions are created during his current
tenure, which will enable the selection and
gradual incorporation of a successor and the
establishment of an office in the capital to be
started over the next three years.
From the seven Board Member candidates for
election, Michael Bisping, Moni Breu, Roland
Forster, Michael Schacke, Patrick Oginski
and Dieter Weidenfeld, the former previous
members of the Board, were re-elected.
Legal sector topics discussed included the
fight against the secondary ticket market or
the ruling of the BFH (Federal Fiscal Court)
on the legal relationship between event
organisers and advance ticket sellers – by the
two lawyers in the Association, Dr Johannes
Ulbricht and Jens Michow. The members
contracted the Board with the processing of
General Terms and Conditions of Business
for the sale of entry permits for events, and
unanimously ordered them to enforce the
claim of organisers for the issue of customer
details against the various operators of
internet advance ticket selling platforms.
The Board was also ordered to start
negotiations with GEMA (Performing Rights
Society) regarding justification of the new
U-V tariff. It has been determined that
the tariff could be applied also to certain
tour events. It was foreseen that the event
management sector would be significantly
affected by the new tariff, as the payment
to make to the GEMA in this area would
multiply . (See report in last month’s VIP
News).

Amsterdam Dance Explosion 2012Manfred Tari [email protected]
The Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) once again set new records in terms of the number of participants , surrounding events and festival visitors .It is not only the numbers
that indicate how
dynamic and vital ADE
has become in recent
years. This convention
continuously reinvents and
improves certain parts of
itself and, as a reward for this,
receives continuously increasing visitor
numbers . ADE also reflects the growing
market share of dance music in the sectors of recorded music and
live music events. Also the growing figures furthermore indicate that
these trends do not only rely on the success of David Guetta, as he is
just the tip of the iceberg for this booming music segment.
VIP News spoke with Richard Zijlma about the current edition,
covering topics ranging from culinary pleasures, the rise of EDM and
acquisition of the Shell-Tower, the former headquarter of the Dutch
oil-multi, by ID &T….
What is your final conclusion about ADE 2012?
– We are really very happy, we set some new records again, both on
the conference and the festival numbers. Several weeks before the
event even started we had 3500 delegates, and there were 200.000
visitors to the festival-program, we had more venues, about 80 this
time for the night-program and there were 1700 DJs performing; all
in all that is really quite a lot! Also this year we added ADE playground
to the event, to take another step.
I know I’ve asked you this question before, but that was ages
ago and meanwhile everything has grown: How is the festival-
program compiled these days?
– It’s more structured, we are constantly in dialogue with the venues
to sort out the programme, we try to sort out what we need to
include, what we might miss, which labels are relevant,
which artists are relevant, do we want more live-
artists and should we try to get them on board?
We combine all that with expertise of the clubs
themselves. For example: The programme
of the Melkweg – they know much better
what works over there than I do. That
works better and better, also because the
whole dance-scene want to showcase
their artists, their labels, their agencies at
ADE of course.
For the venues it’s getting more interesting ,
because they’ve got so much interesting stuff
offered, that they can fill the programme easily .
For example, Studio 80, they went for an extra
location this year to their whole program. What you
also see is, that the programme goes on twenty-four-seven,
which was not the case in the previous years. There are also new
locations , which were normally not used for this kind of music, like
the Concertgebouw , where yesterday Junkie XL did a performance;
great to see him perform in a venue which normally presents classical
orchestras. The Crowd was amazing as well, so that is really great.
What can you say about the hype of electronic dance music
(EDM)?

– It’s definitely there, basically some people like David Guetta had a
great role in it. This year I went to Las Vegas, to check the Electric
Daisy Carnival, it is really booming over there. I was sitting in a taxi,
the driver was about 54 years old and it was a new kind of music for
him. So we told him to stop the car and we ttook him with us!
Still there is an absence of export-offices at ADE. Don’t they
come up with offers or requests to host or to promote one or
the other national music scene?
– No, not at all. From my perspective it is really strange, that there are
no export-offices attending. For quite a few countries in Europe it is
very important.
That is strange, just because the electronic scene is the fastest
rising scene all over the world.
– Yes, that’s where you see how successful it has been. It is the kind of
music that you can export, it is cross-cultural, there are no language-
problems , that definitely helps already. In my opinion the electronic-
scene is set up for the export-offices. Why the hell are they not at
the ADE?
One conference-topic also covered the founding of an
Electronic- Dance-Music-Association . What will this association
focus on, what will be their task?
– Correct, there are a few people working in the background to start
a kind of international foundation for the scene. It’ll be interesting
to see if this will happen. There are still issues to discuss on the
international level as well. So, let’s see if it will work for the scene. It
will address issues like safety or sharing knowledge of organizing and
stuff like that.
How do the major-companies take part in ADE? Basically I saw
many people from independent companies over here but I also
saw that Warner Music hosted a reception. What do you think
about the majors’ involvement in this kind of scene?
– Well, years ago, there were no majors, now they’re coming more
and more. Also the big agencies started coming more two years
ago, I think. Now there are private investors coming over, to see
how they can invest in the scene. So there is definitely a new kind of
development .
What do you mean by private investors?
– Well, for example, Companies such as Live Nation. But there
are also some other players that decided to invest in dance music.
I see something like this coming up in this scene here, all kinds of
cooperation , investments in studios or investments in artists itself. I
met a few guys who are interest to invest and to get a return from
the scene.
By coincidence I have been told that ID &T have plans to
acquire the former headquarter of the oil company Shell in
Amsterdam. Is that another sign for the growth of this part of
the music-industry?
– I think so, because this is quiet a big location and they want to build
clubs in it and stuff like that. It’s funny, because if you look to the
history you’ll see that Shell is one of the first international brands from
Holland. So it’s almost symbolic that now the Dutch dance scene is
taking over as a new international brand, like ID&T did, for example.
ADE is promoted by Buma Cultuur, which is a foundation of
Buma/Stemra. Do you think, regarding the success of Dutch
bands and artists, like Armin van Buuren and others, that this
may lead to a increasing influence at Buma? Is it getting more
important?
– Yes, I think more and more. The scene is still relatively young and
targeted, the level of professionalism is getting higher and higher. On
Amsterdam Dance EventPromotional Opportunities
12
VIPNEWS > NOVEMBER 2012
the board of Buma you see some relevant references to the scene;
it’s definitely right that within the board and the organization itself,
there are big opportunities for the scene. So it’s very important to
give them a good role in the whole process because this market is
growing and growing.
Do you think that the process of growth will continue?
– Yes, definitely in the upcoming years. You can see somebody like
Afrojack sitting here in the studio and his publisher is asking to bring
somebody over to work with him in the upcoming days. Also AKAN is
in the studio for five days during ADE. So, everybody is looking to the
scene and wants to work with the electronic scene nowadays. It will
definitely grow in the upcoming years.
Yesterday I concluded that ADE is now the in top-five-list of
international music-conventions. You compared ADE with
South by Southwest but I don’t really agree with that. It
seems to me that ADE is even more international than South
by Southwest. I would say that ADE in terms of international
delegates is rather more on a level with MIDEM now, which is
still highly international.
– Maybe we have to conclude that ADE is one of the most relevant
music-conferences in the world now.
What are the plans for 2013? Will you keep the structure that
you’ve built in the recent years with the Dylan Hotel and the
Felix Meritis(Conference venue)?
– Yes, definitely. The structure we’ve changed was mostly on
the communication level; we now have three main strings, the
conference , the festival and ADE Playground, which will see the main
development in the upcoming year.
Any predictions?
– Not really, but we visited a few locations today, we talked about
how it went for them, for example, a clothing-store in one of the big
shopping-streets had a very great experience. So, we started last year
with 25 locations, very small, so just guess how much it can be in the
next year…
One thing more that makes ADE outstanding is the culinary
element. I’ve never seen something like it at any convention
before. There is a ADE DJ Cook Off, there is a cooking-school
just between the Dylan Hotel and the Felix Meretis-Building
where artists get to serve their business partners with dinners
and dishes…
– Yes, it’s really fantastic; I think the DJ Cook Off was really a great
experience again in this year. Everybody enjoyed it. One of the DJs
told me, that he has never cooked before in his whole life. I said:
“Really ?” He said: “Yes, it is the first time that I cook.” He had the
recipe from his mum. That was Tommie Sunshine.
Yes, it is always good to share food. It’s great to see great artists like
Dave Clarke, Paul Oakenfold or Seth Troxler, who again won the Cook
Off this year. It’s really great to see them preparing their food and
inviting their friends, that’s really fantastic.

VIPNEWS > NOVEMBER 2012 > INDEPTH STORY > The Man behind the Scenes
Vip News talks to the CEO of the Roskilde Festival:
Henrik Rasmussen has attended all 42 editions of the Roskilde Festival
from the very first in 1971 called Sound Festival.
He was there as a very enthusiastic guest, or at least that’s what his
journal says…the road down memory lane is quite bumpy and Henrik
aka Rass admits it’s not just a matter of the passing of time.
“We were all fascinated by Woodstock and enjoying the spirit of time,
so with my long hair and the smokes, I’m sure I had a great time,”
says the 58-year-old Dane.
The first Roskilde-concert he actually remembers is Dr. Hook in 1976.
A few years later he becomes a volunteer and then in the mid 80’s
he moved from the grass outside to the office inside. Last month,
October 2012, some 1,000 people stopped by to congratulate Rass
on his 25th anniversary as the CEO of Roskilde Festival.
Leading from Behind
Rass has never been one to step up front. He’s the man behind the
scenes; He’d rather talk about his talented employees, but when VIP-
News puts a gun to his head, he admits to some share in the success
of Roskilde Festival.
“Well, I guess I’ve played a big role in the development of Roskilde
Festival. I am a good leader and if I’d be doing something else, I’d
probably be the CEO of some other big company.”
In his private life Rass lives in a small town just outside Roskilde with
his wife, Jette, also employed within The Roskilde Group. She thinks
he works too much, he says, “I can’t help it – I love my work. But it’s
the time spent with my family that gives me the best energy.”
Maybe that’s why, when he finally takes a vacation, they leave Roskil-
de behind to go to some of their favourite places, Italy or Skagen, at
the top of Denmark. He loves food, both cooking and eating, photog-
raphy and most of all: He loves when he’s the best at what he does.
The secret of success
When he was 23 years old, he got his first job as an accountant. He
didn’t quite fit the description with long hair, the wrong clothes and
a devotion to music in general and Heavy Metal in particular; the
perfect combination of skills to lead a successful festival, according
to him.
“Too many festivals forget the importance of economy, but for me
and Roskilde it has always been the number one priority. I’m probably
one of the best cultural economists in Denmark and that’s the main
reason why Roskilde is the biggest cultural event of the world”.
Roskilde:#1 in the worldAs the Festival’s CEO Henrik Rasmussen, claims it is, without any
doubt, the No 1 event:
“Roskilde is the world’s biggest cultural event. I know, festivals like
Glastonbury are bigger in the sense of guests and musicians, but we

offer our guests a total experience of crossover between all kinds of
art forms. Of course music is the essence, but it’s not enough – we
owe it to our guests to aim higher,” he says.
In his own very enthusiastic manner he defines Roskilde’s ambitions
as no less than making the youth of today socially and culturally en-
gaged. He thinks of this as an obligation, made possible by encour-
aging the festival guests to not only attend in a passive way but to
interact openly and playfully.
Supporting new and upcoming Nordic artists is another one of these
obligations. These days it’s called Roskilde Rising. Rass believes, his
organization doesn’t just reflect new trends – they set them.
“We need to be up to date with youth. For many years the average
age of our guests has been 23 and we like to keep it that way. Things
are developing so fast, new music niches are made every day, so it’s
important for an organization like Roskilde to have really competent
people on board – a single person can’t keep up with the beat all by
himself anymore.”
So, this awareness of his limitations and making clear that he consid-
ers himself part of a team, does not disguise the fact that he’s a man
with an exceptionally good sense of how to combine sound econom-
ics and good music, and even after 25 years he still has big ambitions
for this Danish festival.
Ros-factsThe Roskilde Festival Charity Society - a society whose purpose is to collect money
for humanitarian and cultural work, organizes Roskilde Festival.
All profits earned from Roskilde Festival are donated to charity. More than DKK
180 million (app. € 24 mill.) have been donated throughout the years.
During the last three years approx. 3,200 sleeping bags and 2,600 roll mats have
been collected and given to homeless people in Copenhagen.
This year Roskilde Festival was held for the 42nd time. 77,500 all-week tickets and
20,000 one-day tickets were sold.
A total of approx. 200 bands played on Roskilde Festival’s eight stage
Audience
54 % are women and 46 % are men.
Approx. 22 % were first-time visitors at
Roskilde Festival in 2011.
The average age is 23 years.
The typical festival guest is a student living
in a Scandinavian city.
In 2011, 42,500 people arrived at Roskilde
Festival during the first 24 hours.
Denmark: 80 %
Norway: 8 %
Sweden: 4 %
Other countries: 8 %
(Based on numbers from 2011)
The Orange Stage – more than 30 years under the canopy
Orange Stage is the symbol of Roskilde Festival and has been so since 1978. The orange canopy was originally designed in the UK for
The Rolling Stones’ summer tour in 1976. The present canopy, however, is a new and larger version from 2001, providing 1,200 sq m of
stage cover.
Orange Stage has the capacity for really major acts. Over the years, artists such as Bob Marley, U2, Bob Dylan, Metallica, Nirvana,
Radiohead and Rage Against the Machine have played on the stage. The stage and the area in front of it have room for 60,000 people.
Two big screens (50 sq. m) provide a great view of the stage for everyone and a specially-designed pit system ensures a good and safe
concert experience. Productions on the stage have gradually grown in size.
Volunteers… Who? Me?
Roskilde Festival is possible because of 30,000 volunteers. Without the
volunteers , the festival would not exist.
Approx. 30 full-time employees and over 800 volunteers work year-round
to develop and prepare Roskilde Festival.
Each year, 200 sports and cultural associations help get 24,000 volunteers
to work at stalls or as service guards.
Roskilde Festival becomes Denmark’s seventh largest workplace during the
festival.
Trivia
More than 1 million litres of beer, 4 tons of or-
ganic fair trade coffee, 15 tons of french fries,
150,000 burgers and 4.7 tonnes bananas are
consumed each year at Roskilde Festival.
3,500 kilometres of toilet paper is used - equiva-
lent to the distance between Copenhagen and
Cairo. All of it is eco-labelled .

Contention over Predicted Effects of the UK Live Music ActAllan McGowan [email protected]
In the last issue we reported on the coming into law of the Live Music
Act which deregulates live performances in rooms of no more than
200 people capacity and on the claims by a UK Music commissioned
study that this would result in a significant number of venues either
starting to present live music or increasing present programmes. The
Report predicted that an additional 300,000 plus live shows would
take place.
Much as we welcome many aspects of the beneficial effects that the
Act could have we noted that many existing dedicated music venues
were worried about the effects that increases competition could have
on their already difficult business. Andy Inglis, previously owner of
now unfortunately defunct London club venue The Luminaire, now
lectures on live music, manages and tour manages, and consults to
non UK acts on breaking in to the Market, has questioned UK Music’s
findings in a Blog entitled ‘Wanted: Nine Million, Affluent Gig-Goers.’
www.musictank.co.uk/blog
His contention is that even if all these new venues became available in
England and Wales, and if, say, 312,000 new shows were presented,
even at a conservative 30 people attending then 9,360,000 people,
with the necessary resources to go to gigs, would have to be found.
Though he admits that these would not be totally new gig-goers they
would have to come from somewhere – quite possibly abandoning
existing venues, probably as we said last week, those with a door
charge for pubs that may offer free entry in order to increase wet
sales. He also contends that a glut of new, probably unprepared
venue managements will not do anything to improve the production
and customer service standards in a country with, as he says,www.
musictank.co.uk/blog/live-experience the world’s worst reputation
among touring musicians.” We recommend the reading of this
blog in which Inglis concludes that, “The grass-roots industry needs
funding . It needs hard cash. It needs support. It needs sponsors. It
needs some of the aforementioned bodies to put money on the table
to pay for new infrastructure and equipment.www.musictank.co.uk/
resources /speaker-biographies/andy-inglis” Andy Inglis, 5000
UK Music and the Musicians’ Union issued a joint response Andy
Inglis ’ blog thanking him for his comments and admitting that “He
articulated valid points which are central to the thinking around the
Act; we all must consider its implementation.” The response, also
available at www.musictank.co.uk/blog continues: “This Act is not
about venues competing with each other, or stealing audiences, its
about boosting the live music scene in all different types of premises.
This Act offers a chance for owners/managers to provide something
new to their audiences, perhaps providing live music to those who
have not previously been ‘gig goers,’ before. We are also excited that
musicians will have more venues to play in, this is great news. The act
does not just relate to bands but to a pianist in a hotel, or cellist in a
restaurant, it is not about extra pressure on promoters or bands but
enriching our live music scene with more places to play. To musicians
playing live is a crucial part of perfecting their craft, and we hope this
Act will make a valuable contribution to their living.”
UK Music and the Musicians’ Union have committed to monitoring
the Act. UK Music are going to review the baseline study next year,
and also intend to host a series of roundtables across the country ,
inviting promoters and musicians to voice their experiences, to
promote awareness of how the act is working.

VIPNEWS > NOVEMBER 2012
The panel was certainly high profile, but the
title ‘Masters of the Universe’ seemed to
project a level of discussion about as high
as you can get. However this edition of Live
UK– The Summit in London on October 9/10
presented an interesting session moderated
by singer/journalist John Robb. Agents
Emma Banks of CAA, Neil Warnock of The
Agency Group, a delayed Steve Strange of
X-Ray Touring, and promoters Rob Hallett
of AEG Live and John Probyn of Live Nation,
covered an international array (not confining
themselves at all to Live UK) of topics. The
thread of the discussion seemed to be that
as artists are demanding more live work to
maintain their revenues, new markets are to
be developed to feed these requirements.
They kicked off with ticket pricing in far-
flung markets – apparently all students in
Brazil receive a 50% reduction on concert
tickets, but there are many ways to claim to
be a student so punters of all ages claim the
discount . The Agents also noted that ticket
prices are often highest in countries with
lower standards of living, so that audiences
consist of only the high earners. Hallet
announced that the next Bon Jovi tour would
have a £12.50 ticket - albeit as he said for not
the best of seats.
Neil Warnock commented that Agents
now have more of a management role,
building careers by, “…realising the artist’s
expectations in an expanding world touring
market ” He noted that you can now play 14
shows across Russia then into Japan if you
want. China he sees as showing incremental
growth but still having political problems and
presenting difficulties with permits. It was
agreed that India is fast developing, helped
by having English as its first language, and
that South America is the new America, and
may soon be suffering from over touring,
although the panel expected growth in the
festival market. In South Africa it seems that
white audiences who go to shows are no
more than you get in Ireland – which itself is
now a difficult territory due to the economy.
Steve Strange commented on the difficulties
of breaking artists internationally, noting that
new bands cannot afford support tours, so
there is a dependence on festival culture
and a need to work and grow organically to
create visibility.
Younger bands apparently do not work
as hard as the old timers. Neil Warnock
mentioned Deep Purple who started touring
the World in 1967 and are still touring as a
result of putting the work in. Emma Banks
noted that acts no longer work 10 shows
in a row, with some younger acts doing 5
and then finding it difficult to do interviews
and promotional work – in case their voices
go! Rob Hallett says that as things become
more celebrity driven acts don’t have the
background experience that only comes from
doing huge numbers of shows. The panel
concluded that this could become a problem
in the building of new Arena and Stadium
acts.
The recent announcement that The Rolling
Stones are to celebrate 50 years on the road
by playing two London and two New York
gigs, in November and December – with a
hint of others to come seems to bear out
what the ‘Masters of the Universe’ have to
say. Audiences are falling over themselves to
get their hands on tickets for these shows at
whatever they cost! (ED)

‘2012 Festival Sector Held Its Own’ Says WeGotTicketsManfred Tari [email protected]
Figures for the over 700 festivals (A high
figure , but representative of the fact that
many types of events in the UK and elsewhere ,
both indoor and outdoor, refer to themselves
as festivals – Ed.) that paperless ticketing
company WeGotTickets service, have
produced some surprising findings . Despite
a torrid year during which a considerable
number of cancellations resulted from bad
weather, poor sales, and other problems in a
market seen as over saturated by many, the
sector from WeGotTickets’ perspective, held
its own in 2012.
The Company sold the same number of
tickets for the top selling festivals as last year
but state that they worked harder through
their marketing channels to do so. The
company speculate that they got a bigger
share of a smaller pie as those top festivals
generally sold less overall tickets or sold out
later. Breaking down the rankings, the top 10
festivals were up 22% on 2011, top 20 up
10% and top 30 the same.
The marketing channels that WeGotTickets
used to promote its festivals included three
mailshots to its entire database in the lead
up to festival season and regionally targeted
mail shots done individually for their top
50-60 festivals. The festival portal WeGot-
Festivals.com , new in 2012, social media and
Spotify playlists were also used to promote
the discovery of festivals.
There were also double the amount of small-
er festivals on the ticketing company’s books
this year ranging from spoken word, food and
drink, comedy and arts festivals all the way
through to the ubiquitous new music festival.
This meant that the tail – those festivals out-
side the WeGotTickets’ top 100 sellers - was
up by 32% in terms of sales and double in
length, with many of the new festivals on
their books selling in small numbers.
However the Company admits that that this
was a difficult year for some having had 12
official cancellations, half of them new to
the company, and is of the opinion that the
Olympics no doubt played a part in the falling
sales of some of the festivals.
Co-founder Dave Newton said, “This has
been a challenging year for much of the
festival industry, but we’ve worked hard
to combat this through engaging with our
festival fans. By next festival season the
WeGotTickets customer base will have grown
by a further quarter of a million offering a
very diverse audience for our festival clients
to market to.”

GEMA and Angela MerkelManfred Tari [email protected]
The latest attempt by GEMA to increase its
tariffs for the usage of music in bars and
discotheques , but also for almost all other
kind of events, has now come to the attention
of German chancellor Angela Merkel.
As reported in the previous VIP News issue the
new rates have even sparked demonstrations
in Germany. The protests have had an effect
as can be seen in the statement by Merkel
who said at a regional conference of the
German Christ Democrats:
“The thing with Gema is a big issue.”
She also said: “We are working on this
on various levels. You can no longer even
celebrate any festivities as you have to make
stupid and daft payments.”
That is how she replied to the complaint by
a party member, who voiced her anger about
GEMA charges on behalf of the copyright
collection society VG Musik for the copying
of sheet music in Kindergartens , which has
led to kids no longer singing in some German
Kindergarten.
Meanwhile the posting battle in various pro
and anti groups at Facebook has reached
new levels, while opponents such as the
Berlin Club Commission or Event Kultur
Rhein Neckar are developing their strategies
and launching new activities. The latter,
a local music club association arranged a
club tour for politicians on October 19, and
the former will present a study by the law
firm K&L Gates LLP to determine if the new
tariff proposal by GEMA is appropriate on
November 7 in Berlin.

the UK this summer, in spite of the wettest
weather conditions since records began.
Festival-goers can now vote in categories
including Best Major/Medium-Sized/Small

announced on Monday 5th November.
The final winners will be announced
and presentations , hosted by comedian
Phil Jupitus will take place at London’s

December.
During the day of the awards show, the
UK Festival Conference will be held in the
same venue (for the first time). Key-note
speakers and a programme of senior-level
panelists will address the key challenges
and opportunities facing the industry at
this time. Particular emphasis will be paid to
dealing with adverse weather, building and
retaining audience loyalty and capitalising
on the reformatting revenue streams in the
marketplace.
Steve Jenner, Festival Awards co-founder
comments:
“The overwhelming interest we have
received from festivals of all shapes and sizes
wanting to be involved in the Awards and
Conference this year is an encouraging sign
that the market is rallying; what was just a
few years ago a fragmented industry is now
very much a community. It all makes for
exciting progress and a brilliant party, both
of which are very important when the going
gets tough and it’s rained a lot.
Following last year’s sell-out success, The
European Festival Awards will return to
the Oosterport Congress Centre, Groningen ,
Holland for its fourth edition, taking place
on the opening night of the Eurosonic

for many promoters who do a fantastic
job during the year. On the other hand, it’s
a great opportunity to gather with all the
festivals promoters from all over Europe and

Apparently, according to media reports, the bidding for AEG has start-
ed. Various sources reported that Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle, might
be a potential bidder for the Company. But it also has been reported
that Ellison is more interested in the AEG sports division rather than
the concert arm of the Conglomerate.
AEG is currently estimated at being worth between $8 and $10 bil-
lion. According to Forbes the live entertainment division is supposed
to amount to between $4.8 billion and $6.0 billion, while the sport
segment is calculated at $2.0 to $2.5 billion with the new business
department including the ticketing division between $1.2 billion to
$1.5 billion. The estimated debts of AEG are said to be less than 20
percent of the company value.

Sziget festival is the biggest musical and cultural festival in Central
Europe–a seven-day multicultural expo offering more than 800
programs on more than 30 venues.
Sziget means island in Hungarian and the festival, in addition to being
on an island in the heart of Budapest, is an island in the metaphorical
sense. Sziget has a unique atmosphere: it is a meeting place, a musical

place of learning about the world and each other. No matter what
style of music you like listening or dancing to, you will find the place
of your taste.
You can enjoy performances, shows, you can party and dance or just

No Lights at Lockdown
No Lights at Lockdown are a group of five individuals with a shared passion
for music and in growing their band into an established act. Based in North
Wales, the United Kingdom, No Lights at Lockdown formed in 2009 and quickly
established themselves on the UK gigging circuit as energetic, exciting and a
‘must-see’ performance whose love of playing live music was clearly portrayed
to their audience. Recently No Lights at Lockdown were featured on BBC Radio
1 and BBC Radio Wales; broadcast to homes all over the UK and later available
for download from BBC iplayer, a popular and much used online archive. During
the show the bands songs were reviewed and the response was very positive and
very well received.
Origin:
United Kingdom (GB)
