VIPNEWS > JUNE 2013
You’ll have to forgive me if I mention the
weather – again! But it is festival season and
the weather is not just conversation filler but
a major concern. In fact, just to show how
serious it is the UK Meteorological Office
have held a meeting with all sorts of weather
experts to discuss what’s going on. There’s
no doubt that all the patterns are changing.
I was in Inverness in the Scottish Highlands a
couple of weeks ago for Go North (see report
in this issue) and the weather was very pleas-
ant – in fact it usually is, and the Rock Ness
festival which follows the event is generally
quite lucky, although based in a part of the
country famous for wet and grey conditions.
Download and The Isle of Wight organisers
must have been breathing huge sighs of
relief over the past weekend as reasonable
weathe r conditions prevailed. Particularly
after last year’s mud and rain soaked traffic
chaos, all sorts of precautions were put
in place on the I.of W to prevent a repeat.
Throughout Europe lot of organisers will be
putting extrem e efforts into arranging back
up systems and precautions, which they
hope never to use, but the fact is the weathe r
is becoming increasingly unpredictable ;
Glastonbur y and others have not been
encouraged by the forecasts for this season,
and are taking all necessary precautions. But
it looks as though it’s something we’re just
going to have to get used to, a recent BBC
Radio report predicted a possible, in fact
likely, ten years of wet and cold summers!
However the sun is shining here today, so I’m
going out, see you later…
I’m back, it’s too hot - I know – never satisfied!
Also a conversation with Nick Hobbs of
Charmenk o in Turkey has made me realise
that there are more pressing problems than
the weather, lethal though its effects can
be, as Nick says, “You buggers are worrying
about it raining water – we’re worried about
it raining teargas!” (See report in this issue).
On a lighter note for a moment, it appears
that the UK in music terms is, to paraphrase
Cormac McCarthy’s title, ‘Some Country for
Old Men’, what with the extremely aged
Rolling Stones planning a two hour set to
headline Glastonbury (apparently it’s ballet
training that keep’s Jagger in shape), and
Black Sabbath clocking up their first number
one album with ‘13’, 43 years after Paranoid!
It certainly wasn’t clean living and ballet
exercises that kept them going - there’s hope
for me yet!
Also, certain not at all old UK women –- have
been adding to their achievements, being
recognised for their contributions to music by
none less than the (reasonably old but in very
good shape it has to be said..) Queen – or at
least the people that keep an eye on these
things for her. Both Adele and PJ Harvey have
been recognised in the Honours List, and are
now members of the Most Excellent Order Of
The British Empire – meaning that they can
put MBE after their names. Well deserved I’d
say.
Now, you’re probably aware – if not steel
yourself for the following – that as happen s
every year at this time, you will have to
get by without us next month, as due to
some people taking time off (I’m not nam-
ing names!) there will not be a July issue
of The News. However, as you are sunning
yourselves , or huddling under umbrellas, we
will be keeping abreast of what is happening
to get back to you in August. I personally will
be off to Serbia to take part in the CEETEP
sessions at EXIT Festival (see this issue).
So – we wish you all – particularly you in the
Festival business – all the best for this season,
and please remember to keep us informed
on how things are going, so that we can let
everybody else know. I’m heading out into
the sun again – factor 25 I think..

Southampton Joiners Wins NME Small Venue AwardAllan McGowan [email protected]
On 06 June NME announced the winner
of the music brand’s, Britain’s Best Small
Venue campaign, run in association with
Jack Daniel’s JD Roots. 76,000 votes were
reportedly cast in one week by live music fans
supporting their favourite venues.
The winning club is The Joiners, in
Southhampton . The 150 capacity club
opened in 1968, and acts such as Oasis, Blur,
Manic Street Preachers , The Libertines and
Arctic Monkeys have performed there.
Many small clubs in the UK have been
threatened with closure in the past couple
of years, and the Joiners was one of them.
In Decembe r 2012, owing £30,000 in rent
arrear s, it came closes to shutting its doors,
but was saved as a result of the raising of
awareness and funds by a benefit gig by The
Vaccines this January. So this recognition by
the NME voters is particularly significant.
NME editor Mike Williams commented, “It’s
never been more importan t to get behind
the small venues up and down the UK who
do such an amazing job of nurturing and
supporting new music and local scenes.
Hats off to Southampton Joiners for picking
up this year’s title. If ever a venue deserved
recognition for fighting the good fight, it’s
the Joiners.”

Billed as Scotland’s Leading Creative
Industries Festival, the thirteenth edition of
GoNorth again took place in Inverness on 5-6
June. ‘
According to Festival Director, Amanda
Millen , this year’s edition attracted over 1000
registered delegates, an increase of just over
35% on 2012 figures. She continued , “We are
delighted to report such a significant increase
in attendance, and even more pleased with
the level of business opportunities secured
by artists and businesses across this year’s
conference . 2013 was our most ambitious
festival to date, with over 40 creative
industry panel sessions, 85 live showcases,
50 screenings and a dedicated radio station
broadcasting live throughout the event.
We also delivered our broadest range of
content , attracting an international array of
industry figures to the Highlands of Scotland ,
including Mamie Coleman (VP Music ,
FOX), Ernesto Elias (Manager of Creative
Integration , MTV), Malcolm Dunbar (MD,
Pledge Music), Doug Johnson (Talent Buyer,
Summerfest), Paul Sims (Head of Music,
MOFILM ), Simon Pursehouse (Director of
Musi c, Sentric), Blair McDonald (Nettwerk
Music Group) and Charlie Andrew (Producer ,
Alt-J). Having received such a fantastic
response to this year’s festival, we are already
looking forward to introducing a number of
exciting developments for our 2014 edition”.
GoNorth is not a big event when compared
with the likes of SXSW, Eurosonic or The
Great Escape, but it has built steadily since
its beginnings in Aberdeen. The delegate
attendance has doubled over the last two
years and the international aspect has grown
with delegates from the US and Canada, and
artists from Belgium, Denmark and Holland
performing as part of the Excite artist
exchange programme.
I am not the only one to comment recently
on the fact that at many events – it was
noticeable at this year’s Great Escape – artists
seem to pass up the opportunity to pick
up valuable information and contacts, by
staying away from the Conference sessions.
This is definitely not the case at GoNorth,
(nor is it at another Scottish event Wide

Days in Edinburgh ) artists attend and they
ask questions , which gives vibrancy and a
sense of purpose to the sessions. This was
very noticeable at a session on publishing,
which I moderated and learnt things from.
Other panels covered International Book-
ing Agents, Music Placement on TV, A&R,
Producers , Buyers and more.
Pledge Music MD, Malcolm Dunbar was the
subject of The Music Week keynote interview .
Having had a long career in A&R, heading
departments at labels including Island
Records , Warner/East West and V2, Malcolm
discussed the evolution of the traditiona l
music industry and its shape in 2013 in the
face of new consumer habits and routes to
market, including the rapidly growing direct-
to-fan market. Again a lot to be learnt!
VIP News asked delegates for their
opinions on this year’s event:
Doug Johnson: Talent buyer Summerfest ,
Milwaukee, WI, U.S.A.
– GoNorth festival in Inverness is starting to
become the go to festival and conference . I
thought the panelists and bands get better
each year and are focusing on what is
relevant in the music business today. I give
it 2 thumbs up and plan on attending next
year!
Brian Hetherman: Cerberus
Management / IMMF Canada / Canadian
Music Week – Toronto, Canada
– I think GoNorth is in a great position, and is a
solid event, not the biggest Conference event
in Music, but it certainly does not feel like a
small event, and yet has the unique feeling
of being an intimate event. This could be due
to the very down home feeling of Invernes s
itself. The conference was very well run, the
feedback from attendees was extremely
positive on the panels and there was much
learned by everyone, without sacrificing fun.
I would go back to GoNorth again.
Blair McDonald: – Nettwerk Music Group
– London.
– This is the first GoNorth I have attended
in over 10 years and I have to say it was a
very informative and enjoyable couple of
days. The publishing panel was both broad
based and well focussed in discussing the
issues raised by the audience and the panel
participants . The other panels I attended
seemed equally knowledgeable and well
attended . The opportunity to spend some
time in Inverness while seeing some great
artists perform and get a sense of the healthy
local scene is one I would recommend to
anyone in the business .
Sat Bisla: President & Founder, A&R
Worldwide – Los Angeles, USA
– GoNorth has proven to be Scotland’s
premier music showcase and conference
event. It continually evolves and brings a
great balance of creativity and commercial
outcomes. I always find the event productive
and a valuable experience.

Planning for the Autumn (or Fall) Trade EventsAllan McGowan [email protected]
As we’re now firmly into festival season, we thought we’d take a look at the planning required for later in the year, by mentioning a couple of

Inauguration of the Americana Music AssociationAllan McGowan [email protected]
Americana Music has always been a successful genre in the UK, Ireland
and many parts of Europe. Traditionally these shows and recording s
have attracted an older audience, but the fairly recent success of acts
like Mumford & Sons has opened things up to younger fans. The
genre has also thrived on the festival market and has now reached
a point where various UK promoters, agents and broadcasters have
decided to form an Association to address the challenges and further
the opportunities of the genre.
The avowed mission of The Americana Music Association (AMA) is:
– To raise public and professional awareness of Americana Music
in the UK and to support the economic viability of any individuals,
organisation s or musicians working in the genre.
The inaugural meeting of the AMA will take place on Friday 5th
July 2013, at the Maverick Festival, Easton Farm Park, Woodbridge,
Suffolk IP13 0EQ. The event will include speakers from the industry
taking part in a panel discussion on the challenges and opportunities
for Americana music in the UK, musical showcases from both sides of
the Atlantic, and a selection of workshops aimed at both artists and
the industry..

Baris Basaran – Pozitif:When Conservatism meets the Concert Business Manfred Tari [email protected]
Western media has intensively covered the
protests in Turkey against the policies of the
conservative Erdogan Administration. The
massive and even brutal police operation s
against protesting citizens in various bigge r
cities in Turkey show how fragile and sensitive
societies can be in these days.
Once protests reach such a level, a policy
of ‘business as usual’ becomes immediately
impossible. And these kind of developments
can have massive impacts and consequences
for the live music business as the following
interview with the Turkish promoter Baris
Basara n from Pozitif Müzik proves.
The number of shows cancelled by Poziti f Müzik due to the current circumstance s occurring in Turkey, puts things into perspective :
VIPNEWS > JUNE 2013 > INDEPTH STORY > CRISIS IN TURKEY

VIP News: So, exactly how drastic is the
situation in Turkey these days?
– Baris Basaran: Things are calming now, but
actually the situation is that people are emo-
tionally exhausted and therefore the mood is
still the same, it doesn’t change much.
The Prime Minister maintained his positio n
of questioning the legitimacy of the
protest s. Actually the police pushed back the
barricades at Gezi Park over the weekend, so
at the moment there are no protesters there
as the police are blocking it, they are not
letting anyone in. If you check the ‘Guardian’
you will see a new kind of protest, which has
been invented by a Turkish artist. People are
going to various locations and just standing
still. It’s a completely passive and silent way
Promoter Baris Basaran from Pozitif Müzik
12
13
VIPNEWS > JUNE 2013
13
VIPNEWS > JUNE 2013 > INDEPTH STORY > CRISIS IN TURKEY
of protest, they are just standing still and it
is funny because the police don’t know how
to deal with it, how to react. You know,
there is no action there because they are just
standin g still.
How is the situation for Pozitif Live?
– We have cancelled all our events until the
middle of July, we will be extending that
throughout July, because although all of the
action has slowed down it doesn’t mean
that all will change. We still see the country
in an unpredictable condition. Things are
silent now but it is still very unpredictable.
It seems people will be on the streets again,
the protes_t will rise again, you can feel the
tensio n very much in these days.
How has the policy of the Erdogan-
Government affected the live-music
business recently?
– There are many effects to the business,
which have affected it terribly. Turkey is still
an emerging market, and we have a growing
economy. To justify our marketing costs, we
can never rely on the income of the ticket-
sale s completely, it is just out of question. For
example, you can’t do a festival with a ticket-
price of 100 Euros, that is a no-go in Turkey,
you simply can’t do that. If you’re doing a
3-day-festival, a camping-festival with 60
bands, you have to sell the tickets for about
60 Euros. So you have to rely on financing it
with brands, which are sponsoring the event.
But the Erdogan-administration has
instituted a law, apparently to protect
young people from alcohol and tobacco
products , which made raising sponsorship
very tough. In the festival- and live music-
busines s you have many beer brands, alcohol
brands, sponsoring bands and events. The
prohibition of beer-brands, alcohol brands
that are partially highly identified with
youngsters, with young people, is a massive
set back for us. For example, you don’t get a
licence for alcohol if your club or your shop
is within 100 meters from a school, so it is
impossible to get a licence for the beer- and
alcohol brands that may have sponsored a
festival or an event.
Are you also experiencing problems
with obtaining licences for festivals or
concerts ?
– Well, at the moment we have got problems
with obtaining artists, that has a negative
effect on our business in this year. So, we will
see what happens over the next years, I don’t
know yet.
What was the reaction of agents and
business-partners to you having to
cancel all these shows?
– The fact that all international news media
reported what’s happening in Turkey made
it very easy to us to explain our problems.
Because the government haven’t declared
any kind of national emergency, that lack of
any official declaration makes it a bit difficult
to make things happen on the legal basis.
When the agents ask for my reasons for the
cancelled event, they know the situation and
that I have no possibility to do something
about it.
Do you have cancellation insurance for
your shows?
– We have, through a UK insurer, but the
funny thing is, they are also refusing to pay
because the government hasn’t declared an
official state of emergency. It’s a horribl e
situation; so far all the artists agree to pay
something back, minus their basic costs and
flight costs. But today I was speaking to some
American agents and I got the feeling that
they will not refund anything, which will be
very bad for us, because that will cost us
million s at the moment.
14
VIPNEWS > JUNE 2013 > INDEPTH STORY > CRISIS IN TURKEY
Do you have any support from foreign
or domestic artists in terms of sending
message s to the Turkish Government?
– Yes, really a lot. Actually most of our
cancelled artists made some official
announcement s from their Facebook- or
Twitter- Accounts or their main websites.
They’re saying that they support the Turkish
protesters. So, there is some level of suppor t
but mostly it is the level of understanding ,
the level of touchiness that is much
higher than we’ve expected. Because the
internationa l news-channels and newspapers
are reporting the situation a thousand times
better than our local media.
Do you have any shows on sale for
August and September?
– Yes, we have XX and Placebo and in late
July we have Iron Maiden, I haven’t cancelled
that yet because we have sold lots of tickets
and we don’t want things to escalate.
Are there any ticket-sales at all in these
days?
– Yes, for the non-cancelled shows not many
people are asking for refunds, because the
people know that we have lost so many
shows and we all hope that it will get back
to normal and we can enjoy the shows. For
the cancelled shows we have started a legal
procedure to refund the ticket-holders.

Nick Hobbs - Charmenko:Total Meltdown!Allan McGowan [email protected]
Nick Hobbs is British, but has been based
in Turkey for some years – he promotes in
the country and throughout territories in
the surrounding region. He is a well-known
face at events like the ILMC and chaired the
Russian Market Focus at this year’s event.
When I first contacted Nick to ask how the
crisis was affecting him and his business,
and indeed the whole of Turkey’s concert
industry , he replied with two words: “Total
Meltdown!”
In a Skype conversation he elaborated:
“Almost all international concerts since
Rihanna ’s sold out show promoted by Pozitif
on May 30th, have been cancelled. There was
no way anything could go ahead from June
1-16, and very little is likely to go ahead until
mid- July at the earliest.”
But Nick makes clear that any resumption
of normality is not certain as the situation
remain s unstable in Istanbul, as he says:
“There are still clashes going on in other
citie s, so nobody knows if things will re -
ignite here too.”
Nick’s Company, Charmenko, has lost
the High Voltage Festival featuring Slaye r
scheduled for June 29. It is not only
international shows that are cancelled, and
not only in Istanbul, as Nick observes:
“All shows at peak time throughout the
country, including those with Turkish acts are
affected as well.”
It appears that even if promoters were
prepared to risk staging a show there would
be next to no audiences as he points out.
“Nobody is buying, nobody can market
anything and there would be criticism from
social media for anybody trying to make
money from shows at this time.”
He continues:
“Also, many shows in Turkey can only go
ahead financially with sponsor support and at
this time of crisis sponsors are understandably
very conscious of their public image and are
pulling out.”
As far as insurance is concerned, Nick has
little hope of receiving compensation, “These
cancellations are probably not insurable.
Even though the country is under a kind of
lockdown, there are political reasons for the
police not to officially prohibit events as this
would make the Government responsible,
so the police are not denying permits for
concert s and that’s what would be needed to
claim Force Majeure.”
Nick thinks that Turkish artists will not seek
recompense, but international artists will
have to be handled on a case-by-case basis.
This is obviously an extremely difficult
situation for the promoters, not only are
there severe financial losses to be considered ,
there are image problems, particularly for
the major promoters (such as Pozitif – see
above.). As Nick says:
“Promoters have to keep a good relationshi p
with both audience and authorities to
continue doing business, a very difficult
juggling act under these conditions.”
Asked about the future Nick replies:
“Pozitif has pulled just about everything up to
the Iron Maiden show on July 26th, and they
are obviously in frequent contact with Iron
Maiden’s Agent John Jackson, so we will have
to see. But in the meantime nobody is buying
tickets. The Rock & Coke Festival in September
might actually benefit from the situation as
punters will get their refunds from cancelled
concerts in June and July and will have money
to spend – but who knows?”
So – everything remains totally uncertain,
and all we can do is hope for some resolve
to a dreadful situation and wish Nick, Barıs
Basaran , all colleagues in the concert busines s
and all the Turkish people the best outcome
possible. As Nick wryly says, “While the rest
of you are worrying about it raining water,
we’re worrying about it raining teargas!”

News from the EastAllan McGowan [email protected]
It’s not that long ago that the Eastern European markets were being
referred to as ‘Emerging’, with the Western business keeping a
somewhat condescending eye on what was going on, just in case
there was some potential to be exploited. Now, and seemingly quite
suddenly, as Western Europe was struggling with major economic
problems, the East has in many cases ‘emerged’, with particular
succes s in the Festival Market, attracting more and more audiences
from the West, with imaginative programming and affordable prices!
Concert Giant Live Nation Entertainment is obviously aware of the
potential in the region having acquired a majority stake in BDG Music
Group, the Baltic region’s largest concert promotion company. BDG
Music has produced more than 50 shows in the Baltics since early
2012, selling more than 200,000 tickets. The group will retain its
current management team, although upon completion of the deal, it
will be renamed Live Nation Baltics.
Thomas Johansson, Chairman of International
Music of Live Nation Entertainment, commented:
“We are delighted to welcome BDG into the Live Nation
family. BDG’s extensive network in Estonia and Lithuania
will strengthen our position in Eastern and Central
Europe and will offer our artists a full run around the
Baltic Sea.”
Peeter Rebane, one of the founders of BDG Music, said:
“BDG has more than 18 years’ experience in the business of creating
unique shows and events for the public and providing superior
entertainment -related services. Being part of the world’s leading
entertainment company will create even better opportunities for local
music fans to see world class concerts in future.”
This year Live Nation Baltics is planning major concerts featuring
Robbie Williams and Depeche Mode, among others.

Central And Eastern European Talent Exchange ProgrammeAllan McGowan [email protected]
For the second year the organisers of ETEP and CEETEP and invited
guests will meet at the EXIT Festival in Novi Sad, Serbia, on July
12/13th, to discuss the further goals and the progress of The Central
and Eastern European Talent Exchange Programme.
A grant from the European Commission facilitated the introduction
of ETEP 2.0, the new version of the European Talent Exchange
Programme (The initiative of Noorderslag/Eurosonic often referred to
in VIP News) in 2012 with eight new festivals from Central Eastern
Europe (CEE) joining and expanding the Programme. The intention
is that ETEP 2.0 will grow from 60 participating festivals in 2011 to
100 in 2016.
CEETEP (Central Eastern European Talent Exchange Program) is an
ETEP sub-program together with in total 16 CEETEP festivals in the
CEE region and selected CEE media partners, Eurosonic Noorderslag
and co-organisers Sziget Festival, Budapest, Hungary and Exit Festival,

The intention was, and is, that by working together, the CEETEP festival s
and their media partners will help more CEE artists perform across
borders within Central Eastern Europe and the winners from CEETEP
via shows at Eurosonic Noorderslag in the Netherlands throughout the
whole of Europe and beyond. In 2012 CEETEP realized 29 shows by
19 acts from 10 countries. Recently announced figures (June) for 2013
reveal that this new sub-programme has so far created 25 confirmed
shows by 18 artists from 11 different European countries.
This second of a series of two-day meetings, will both review the
first year’s progress and help determine the future of the CEETEP
Programme . As well as these cooperative artist exchanges it is also an
objective of CEETEP that knowledge and experience will be shared that
will lead to the development and further professionalism of the music
industry in the region in general and the CEETEP artists in particular.
It will be my privilege to moderate these meetings; ETEP and
CEETEP organiser Ruud Berends and Douwe Dijkstra from Eurosonic
Noorderslag will attend. The format will encourage open discussion
between 25 managers and representatives of regional acts backed by
CEETEP festivals and media, performing at EXIT (see list), with guest
speakers including: Ms. Fruzsina Szép / program & artistic director –
Sziget Festival, Budapest, Hungary; Vladimir Vodalov: EXIT Festival:

Ja Ja JaNordic Festival in LondonAllan McGowan [email protected]
We have mentioned the regular Ja Ja Ja club evenings in London
before , but just to recap: Ja Ja Ja was founded in 2009 as an
established and trusted website and destination event for UK fans
of Nordic music. Nine times a year at London’s The Lexington, the Ja
Ja Ja booking group hand-picks an array of excellent up-and-coming
talent to showcase from all over the culturally-rich region. Happening
every last Thursday of the month, Ja Ja Ja is presented in association
with The Line of Best Fit and Record of the Day.The Ja Ja Ja clubnight
and website is a pan-Nordic music export project managed by Nina
Finnerud.
Now some of the biggest names in Nordic music are to headline the
Ja Ja Ja Festival - a new two-day event at London’s Roundhouse on
November 8th-9th 2013. Mew (Denmark) and múm (Iceland) are the
first artists announced to play the Ja Ja Ja Festival - a showcase for the
best of Nordic music, food and film. The event is a joint collaboration
between Ja Ja Ja Music and the Roundhouse, supported by the Nordic
Embassies in London and Nordic Culture Fund.
The festival will also feature New Nordic food and documentary film
screenings. Additionally, the Roundhouse will act as home to the Ja
Ja Ja club night for the duration of the festival - bringing 6-8 up-and-
coming Nordic artists to the Studio Theatre.
Explaining the event’s aims, Anna Hildur, festival director (and former
managing director of Iceland Music Export), said:
“Whether it is music, film, literature, fashion, food or technology,
Nordic culture is widely recognised for its innovation and individuality.
Ja Ja Ja will bring these elements together - presenting some fantastic
artists and offering festival goers a complete Nordic experience in the
heart of London.”

The Expertise Experience Manfred Tari [email protected]
At first glance it appears to be just another attempt by official sources
to make more of the tragedy which resulted from the catastrophe of
the Love Parade in Duisburg in July 2010, where 21 people were killed
and many more seriously injured.
This time it is the University of Siegen who, together with several
partners such as the Fire Brigade in Berlin and Munich, the German
Police High School, the Federal Office for Population Protection and
Catastrophe Aid, IT-Companies and the University of Wuppertal have
joined forces for a scientific experiment.
As part of the experiment around 1.000 participants simulate the
situation of mass crowd behaviour. The project is called, ‘BaSiGo –
Bausteine für die Sicherheit von Großveranstaltungen’ (models for the
security of mass events) and is supported to the tune of 5.5 million
Euro by the Federal Ministry for Research.
So far, so good. Bearing in mind that disaster of Duisburg resulted in
very strict requirements for health and safety regulations for almost
every kind of live entertainment and other public events, this project
once again proves that those who are affected by tougher and
amended regulations are obviously not fully considered.
As part of the project description on the website for ‘BaSiGo’, the
initiators for the research project refer to the deadly incidents of Love
Parade and Pukkelpop. But there is no information indicating that the
conglomerate of partners have consulted with one of the promoter
associations in Germany.
Like a previous steering committee initiated by the Ministry of
Northrhine Westphalia that developed a guideline for health and
safety regulations for bigger events, BaSiGo also neglects to officially
involve professional promoters. As this story went on to press, nobody
was been available at the BaSiGo-office to respond to this question.
VIP News will follow up on this project on this after the summer time,
in the meantime check the website of www.basigo.de which also of
course does not have an English language version yet.

Music in SharesManfred Tari [email protected]
Shortly before the VIP News summer break, the news flow regarding
business developments among corporate concert companies
significantly heated up.
Till recently the news situation appeared to be quite normal, however
this month delivered and revealed some exciting news, and even one
story that at least left more than one promoter smiling...
In order to cover the recent developments more appropriately, we
have altered the usual format of this section:
First of all and probably the most exciting news for some investors and
share holders of the live music blue chip shares of CTS Eventim and
Live Nation is the news about the decision of the arbitration court by
the International Chamber of Commerce regarding its decision for the
cancellation of the ticketing collaboration between both companie s
in 2010.
The arbitration court has finally now decided that Live Nation does
not have to pay any compensation to CTS Eventim for their sudden
cancellation of a ticketing service deal immediately after the approval
of the merger by Live Nation with Ticketmaster.
The deal previously foresaw a long lasting cooperation between CTS
Eventim and Live Nation that might have resulted in CTS Eventim
moving up from its position as European market leader for ticketing
to a global player within this business field.
For quite a while the hope by CTS Eventim that the arbitration
would decide in favour of the company also positively stimulated
its share price. Occasionally speculations popped up, claiming that
compensation could significantly boost CTS Eventim profit results.
Profit results are something that Live Nation, unlike CTS Eventim are
not generally known for. However, Live Nation still has money for
investment s and again unlike CTS Eventim is indeed a true global
player.

CTS EventimExpands in Switzerland
This news concentrates on the hopes of DEAG regarding an obviously
highly sought after business relationship with the new company of
industry veteran André Béchir in Switzerland.
Ten days before the announcement by CTS Eventim regarding
the acquisition of an 80 percent stake of the newly founded ABC
Production PLC by Béchir, DEAG was very pleased to announce
collaboration with ABC Production.
In the DEAG press release it says:
“With the longstanding and strong business partner Ringier, a good
concert pipeline and the partnership with ABC Productions, led by
André Béchir, DEAG anticipates at least a doubling of results in the
Swiss market in 2013.”
When there are profits in sight, the European player CTS Eventim
seems to be not far away and may be in terms of the Swiss market
now a bit closer to them than DEAG would probably like.
In a press release it states:
“CTS Eventim expects to be able to build a market leading position in
Live Entertainment in Switzerland”.
For a change the announcement also includes a statement by
CTS Eventim CEO Klaus-Peter Schulenberg:
“André Béchir is one of the truly outstanding promoters in Europe. We
have a long-standing friendly relationship, and I really look forwar d to
working with André”.
Although the purchase price for the acquisition has not been
revealed, André Béchir is apparently supposed to also be “...
very excited about the co-operation.” He is quoted as saying:
“It is a great opportunity to launch this new venture together with
Klaus-Peter Schulenberg and his CTS EVENTIM. And I am particularly
pleased that we’ve been able to build such an experienced and
motivated team for ABC so quickly.”

DEAGExpands in Germany
At least this news definitely cheers up responsible decision takers at
DEAG more than that about the joint venture between CTS Eventim
and ABC Production: DEAG acquires a 75.1 percent stake of Wizard
Promotions.
To finance the deal of the company headed by industry veteran Ossy
Hoppe, DEAG issue new shares worth about 4 million Euros. The
share capital therefore has been increased by about ten percent as
DEAG put out exactly 1,238,898 new shares for a share price of 3.25
Euro.
In fact this move can significantly help DEAG to improve its market
share on the German concert market. Wizard will remain being
heade d by Hoppe and his son Oliver Hoppe as Co-Managing Director.
Ossy Hoppe has already worked as MD on behalf of DEAG for the
company Global Concerts between 1998 until 2003.
Taking all acquisitions into consideration, some may remember that
AEG still haven’t been bought yet.
Between the CompaniesWhile the corporate players enjoy expansion, news of two more long
time industry Characters complete this edition of VIP News.
For the last eight years Thomas Zimmermann, founder of the concer t
agency Pastell way back in the eighties, worked as controller for
DEAG. According to insider news, in August Zimmermann will move
on to Creative Talent overseeing the financial administration of the
company set up by Carlos Fleischmann, who also has plans to expand
his company as previously reported in an interview in VIP News.
Philipp Styra, who worked closely together with Fleischmann for more
than 18 years, surprisingly leaves Creative Talent and heads to Four
Artists, where he has already worked since the beginning of June.
Styra previously worked among others with artists such as Muse, The
Black Keys, The xx and Amy Winehouse and discovered bands such
as Jimmy Eat World, Olli Schulz, Kettcar, Tomte and Donots. He is
also well known for his highly impressive table soccer skills which
are according to insider sources apparently significantly better than
the combined table soccer skills of all mentioned CEO’s within this
newsletter...
