Dear friends,
First of all, I would like to apologise for the quality of the copies. I wanted you to have music to play,and this is the music I started on and have been playing for the last year. In some cases there arelittle stamps on it that say 'hello' from a stamp ring toy from a Kinder Egg. It is all music which is outof copyright, and I arranged them myself. I want to say a little about them before you begin.
The first few songs are the ones Sherlock played on the show. God Save the Queen , We Wish You a Merry Christmas , and Auld Lang Syne . They are quite easy first songs.
Then we have John Peel , which Chrissie sang in Parade's End , and The British Grenadiers . I'vealso inserted There's a Long Long Trail, another WWI song, and one which my dad used to singwhilst driving, and The Welsh Men of Harlech , which were mentioned in the book as I recall.
Next is Suo Gân , a Welsh hymn which has easy notes and is good to practice steady bow work. Ithas a beautiful melancholy deep sound and I think it is the best song in the world. I inserted The Ashgrove here as well, because it is also Welsh. I have also included In the Bleak Midwinter because I think its final verse addresses Sherlock well and would let him think in ways which mightinterest him.
I have included two late 1800s British comedy songs. The Man that Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo is based on actual events, and T. E. Lawrence sang it in Lawrence of Arabia to himself in the desert.I was so excited to find Patrick, Mind the Baby . It is the song they used in Kipling's Stalky and Co .as a signal to recognise one another in the wars in India. It was hard to find, and the difficulty wasmade greater by the fact that Kipling had said it was Patsy, Mind the Baby . So far, this has excitedno one, but I myself was excited to finally find it.
I have included a large number of Celtic songs. First are the Cornish ones, because I am Cornishand patriotic. The Flora Day Song is played on the 8th of May and the townspeople dance aroundthe town in white dresses and fine suits and even through the houses! And they play this song, thewords to which I found in an old book by a man who went through Cornwall collecting folksongs.Trelawny is our National Anthem. And A Cornish Lullaby is a fine smuggling song for a tot, inspiringdaring-do! It also features arpeggios of major chords, so I recommend it for ear-training.
The next two are Scottish. Forgive me for mentioning that 'the low road' in Loch Lomond is death.Scots Wha Ha'e is, of course, traditional.
I have included some Thomas More songs. These are some of my favourite songs of all time, forvarious types of courage in their words, and their death-defying value of friendship. But as well, mygrandmother used to like them, and John Holliday's mother used to play them. Does one need morereason? Surely at least ACD canon Sherlock would appreciate the themes.
Beginning with The Rose of Tralee we have some more Irish songs, then two American songsfollowed by a few Christmas carols.
I've added a number of classical pieces at the end, beginning with some by Mendelssohn. In ACDcanon Watson mentions that these were his favourites and that Holmes played them simply toplease him. I've ended with Dans Macabre . I find it difficult. I can't play it well yet, but I want to.
Thank you so much for reading.
Yours,Methleigh.

GOD SAVE THE QUEEN
God save our gracious Queen!Long live our noble Queen!God save the Queen!Send her victorious,Happy and glorious,Long to reign over us:God save The Queen!
O Lord our God arise,Scatter her enemies,And make them fall:Confound their politics,Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix:God save us all.
Thy choicest gifts in store,On her be pleased to pour;Long may she reign:May she defend our laws,And ever give us cause,To sing with heart and voice,God save the Queen!

AULD LANG SYNE
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,and ne'er brought to mind ?Should old acquaintance be forgot,and auld lang syne ?For auld lang syne, my dear,for auld lang syne,we'll take a cup of kindness yet,for auld lang syne.
And surely I’ll buy your pint cup!and surely you’ll buy mine!We'll take a cup o’ kindness yet,for auld lang syne.
We two ha'e run about the braes,and picked the daisies fine;But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,sin' auld lang syne.
We two ha'e paddled in the stream,from morning sun till dine;But seas between us broad ha'e roaredsin' auld lang syne.
And here’s a hand my trusty friend !Gi'e us a hand o’ thine !We’ll take a right good-willy draught,for auld lang syne.

THERE'S A LONG LONG TRAIL
Nights are growing very lonely,
Days are very long;
I'm a-growing weary onlyListening for your song.
Old remembrances are thronging
Through my memory
Till it seems the world is full of dreams
Just to call you back to me.
There's a long, long trail a-winding
Into the land of my dreams,
Where the nightingales are singingAnd a white moon beams.
There's a long, long night of waiting
Until my dreams all come true;
Till the day when I'll be going down
That long, long trail with you.
All night long I hear you calling,
Calling sweet and low;
Seem to hear your footsteps falling,Everywhere I go.
Though the road between us stretches
Many a weary mile,
I forget that you're not with me yet
When I think I see you smile.
There's a long, long trail a-winding
Into the land of my dreams,
Where the nightingales are singingAnd a white moon beams.
There's a long, long night of waiting
Until my dreams all come true;
Till the day when I'll be going down
That long, long trail with you.

THE ASHGROVEJohn Thomas, John Jones (Talhaiarn,) Thomas Oliphant 1862
Down yonder green valley, where streamlets meander,When twilight is fading I pensively rove
Or at the bright noontide in solitude wander,
Amid the dark shades of the lonely ash grove;
‘T was there, while the blackbird was cheerfully singing,
I first met that dear one, the joy of my heart!
Around us for gladness the bluebells were ringing,
Ah! then little thought I how soon we should part.
Still glows the bright sunshine o'er valley and mountain,
Still warbles the blackbird its note from the tree;
Still trembles the moonbeam on streamlet and fountain,
But what are the beauties of nature to me?
With sorrow, deep sorrow, my bosom is laden,
All day I go mourning in search of my love;Ye echoes, oh, tell me, where is the sweet maiden?
"He sleeps, 'neath the green turf down by the ash grove."

The Song of Western Men
With a good sword and a trusty hand!A merry heart and true!King James's men shall understand
What Cornish here can do!And have they set the where and when?And shall Trelawny die?Here's twenty thousand Cornish boldWill know the reason why!
And shall Trelawny live?And shall Trelawny die?Here's twenty thousand Cornish boldWill know the reason why!
Out spake their Captain brave and bold:A merry wight was he:'Though London Tower be Michael's hold,We'd set Trelawny free!'We'll cross the Tamar, land to land:The Severn is no stay:With "one and all," and hand in hand;Then who shall bid us nay?
And shall Trelawny live?And shall Trelawny die?
Here's twenty thousand Cornish boldWill know the reason why!
And when we come to London Wall,A pleasant sight to view,"Come forth! come forth! ye cowards all:We're better far than you.'Trelawny he's in keep and hold;Trelawny he may die:But twenty thousand Cornish boldWill know the reason why.
And shall Trelawny live?And shall Trelawny die?Here's twenty thousand Cornish menWill know the reason why!

Farewell, but Whenever You Welcome the Hour
Farewell! but whenever you welcome the hourThat awakens the night-song of mirth in your bower,Then think of the friend who once welcomed it too,And forgot his own griefs to be happy with you.His griefs may return, not a hope may remainOf the few that have brighten'd his pathway of pain,But he ne'er will forget the short vision, that threwIts enchantment around him, while lingering with you.
And still on that evening, when pleasure fills upTo the highest top sparkle each heart and each cup,Where'er my path lies, be it gloomy or bright,My soul, happy friends, shall be with you that night;Shall join in your revels, your sports, and your wiles,And return to me, beaming all o'er with your smiles --Too blest, if it tells me that, 'mid the gay cheer,Some kind voice has murmur'd, "I wish he were here!"
Let Fate do her worst, there are relics of joy,Bright dreams of the past, which she cannot destroy;Which come in the night-time of sorrow and care,And bring back the features that joy used to wear.Long, long be my heart with such memories fill'd!Like the vase, in which roses have once been distill'd --You may break, you may shatter the vase, if you will,But the scent of the roses will hang round it still.

EASY AND SLOW
It was down in Christchurch I first met with Annie,A neat little girl and not a bit shy.She told me her father had came from Dungannon
And would take her home in the sweet by and by.
And what's it to any man whether or no:Whether I'm easy or whether I'm true,As I lifted her petticoat easy and slowAnd I tied up my sleeve for to buckle her shoe.
We wandered down Thomas Street down by the Liffey.The sunlight was gone and the evening grew dark.It was on Whiteman's Bridge when, by God, in a jiffyMy arms were around her beyond in the park.
And what's it to any man whether or no:Whether I'm easy or whether I'm true,As I lifted her petticoat easy and slowAnd I tied up my sleeve for to buckle her shoe.
In city or country a girl is a jewel,And well made for holding the most of the while,But any young fellow is really a foolIf he chooses the first time to go a bit far.
And what's it to any man whether or no:Whether I'm easy or whether I'm true,As I lifted her petticoat easy and slowAnd I tied up my sleeve for to buckle her shoe.
If you chance should go to the town of DungannonYou can search till your eyeballs are empty and blind.Be you sitting or walking or standing or sportingAnother like Annie you never will find.
And what's it to any man whether or no:Whether I'm easy or whether I'm true,As I lifted her petticoat easy and slowAnd I tied up me sleeve for to buckle her shoe.

Good King Wenceslas
Good King Wenceslas look'd out, On the Feast of Stephen;When the snow lay round about,
Deep, and crisp, and even:Brightly shone the moon that night, Though the frost was cruel,When a poor man came in sight, Gath'ring winter fuel.
"Hither page and stand by me, If thou know'st it, telling,2Yonder peasant, who is he? Where and what his dwelling?""Sire, he lives a good league hence. Underneath the mountain;
Right against the forest fence, By Saint Agnes' fountain."
"Bring me flesh,3 and bring me wine, Bring me pine-logs hither:Thou4 and I will see him dine, When we bear them thither."Page and monarch forth they went, Forth they went together;Through the rude5 winds wild lament, And the bitter weather.
"Sire, the night is darker now, And the wind blows stronger;Fails my heart, I know now how, I can go no longer.""Mark my footsteps, good my page;6 Tread thou in them boldly;Thou shalt find the winter's rage Freeze thy blood less coldly."
In his master's steps he trod, Where the snow lay dinted;
Heat was in the very sod Which the saint had printed.Therefore, Christian men, be sure, Wealth or rank possessing,Ye who now will bless the poor, Shall yourselves find blessing.
