WHAT CAN EMPLOYERS DO?• establish a zero-tolerance policy• workplace violence prevention program• incorporate the information into an existing accident prevention program

HOW EMPLOYEE PROTECT THEMSELVES?• learn how to recognize, avoid, or diffuse potentially

violent situations• alert supervisors to any concerns about safety or

security• avoid traveling alone• carry only minimal money

WHAT SHOULD EMPLOYERS DO?• Encourage employees to report• Provide prompt medical evaluation and treatment after

the incident.• Report violent incidents to the local police promptly.• Inform victims of their legal right to prosecute

perpetrators.• Discuss the circumstances of the incident with staff

members

VERBAL THREATS

• an illegal act that violates federal employment law• employers who engage in this behavior attack their

workplace member• continue long after the abusive behavior has been

stopped

EMPLOYEE PREVENTION•must know what verbal threats are and learn to identify it as it happens•ignore the abuser•walk away from the situation•speak up to your abuser after the fire dies down•stick to your guns

• should treat all employees complaining of harassment• interview all parties involved in the harassment

PHYSICAL THREATS•happen to anyone and can be inflicted by anyone•workplace violence not happen in workplace only•physical abuse in the workplace is any of the following actions, hitting, shoving, pushing, kicking, punching, property damage, vandalism, sabotage, theft, rape,murder

• make sure someone knows where you are at all times• keep emergency phone numbers on hand• do not do anything or go anywhere that makes you feel

unsafe

payments• install bullet proof glass barriers to separate employees

• an emotional response to circumstances where one is obstructed from arriving at a personal goal

• the more important the goal, the greater the frustration• Sources of frustration may be internal or external

– internal source of frustration when one has competing goals that interfere with one another

EMOTIONAL BLACKMAIL• is a form of emotional abuse, directed at controlling the

victim’s behavior and actions• not very easy to recognize emotional abuse

DEALING WITH EMOTIONAL BLACKMAIL

• recognize that you are suffering from it• just say that it will hurt you• never ever believe the negative things the blackmailer

says about you• Try to communicate with the blackmailer• seek professional help
