Vinten’s unique infinitely adjustable Perfect Balancemakes the camera appear weightless in the handsof the camera operator.

Perfect BalancePerfectly Balanced Panand Tilt Heads

Why is balance important?Imagine the scenario: a person holdsa weight at shoulder height with theirarm bent and close to their body; thefurther they extend their arm from theirelbow, the harder it becomes to supportthe weight.

Why? The weight does not becomeheavier but the amount of effort (torque)required to support the weight increasesas the weight is moved further from theelbow (pivot point).

This explanation is also true for acamera that is tilted. The further it istilted from the horizontal, the moretorque is required to prevent thecamera falling.

This torque is produced by the pan andtilt head’s counterbalance system. If itdoes not match the camera weight andangle exactly the camera will either fallaway or return to centre.

Why is Perfect Balance thebest solution?Most manufacturers offercounterbalance systems that cannotproduce the exact amount of torquerequired. Figure 1 shows that theamount of torque required as a resultof tilting the camera has a precise butnon-linear pattern. This means thatthe out of balance effect is mostprominent on headsmanufacturedwith linear counterbalance systems.

Even where amanufacturer hasincluded continuously variablecounterbalance, if it is only approximatethe camera will not be completelycontrolled throughout the tilt rangeof the head (see Fig.2).

The Vinten Perfect Balance systemis easy to set and offers infiniteadjustment, providing precisely theright amount of torque necessaryto counterbalance the camerathroughout the head’s tilt range.

Minimal effort is required to move thecamera; the camera operator can evengo hands-free. Vinten’s infiniteadjustment allows exactly the rightamount of torque to be generated atwhatever angle the camera ispositioned. Compensating for the effectof gravity, Vinten’s Perfect Balancemakes the camera appear weightless inthe hands of the camera operator. And,as it balances perfectly the drag controlcan be used for what it is intended to do:shot framing and control, rather thanhelping to balance the camera.

Vinten pedestals are used all overtheworld because Perfect Balance enables the operator to

concentrate on the shot and not on the pedestal.

Perfectly Balanced PedestalsHow to achieve 180˚ Perfect Balancein 4 simple steps:

1 Slide the camera onto the head usingthe Vinten slide plate and position it sothat the camera’s centre of gravity sitsover the centre of the head.

2 Reduce the tilt friction to its minimum.

3 Tilt the camera both forward and back;if the camera is correctly positioned itwill either fall away from, or return tothe horizontal at an even rate eitherside of the head’s top dead centre.

4 If the camera falls away from thecentre position, turn the PerfectBalance knob clockwise. If thecamera springs back towards thecentre, turn the Perfect Balanceknob anticlockwise.

Perfect Balance is achievedwhenthe camera remains stationary inany tilted position.

Perfect Balance is an equallyimportant part of Vinten pedestals.

Why is balance important?In this context balance literally meansthe support offered by the pedestal tothe camera/lens configuration.Without balance the camera would fallto the pedestal’s lowest point or rise tothe pedestal’s highest point making itimpossible to film.

Why is Perfect Balance the bestsolution?Non-perfect balance systems requirevariable effort throughout the strokeof the column and are thereforeharder to use; the camera will have atendency to fall or rise at certainpoints, which, depending on itsseverity, canmake smoothmovementand steady framing virtuallyimpossible.

Perfect Balance ensures that thepedestal column system consistentlyoffers the exact support required forthe camera operator to raise andlower the camera with minimal effort.

Vinten drag systems are designed to offercomplete control at any level of movement.

Drag Technology

Why isdrag important?Inorder to control the camera,resistance tomovement (drag)is needed toprevent overshooting,dampenoutunwantedmovementsand tomakeminoradjustmentvirtually impossible todetect.

Why is Vinten drag technology thebest solution?Whilst drag is essential, it can have anegative effect if the system is poorlydesigned. All too often (see Fig.1) dragsystems are designed so that resistanceto movement increases proportionallywith the speed of pan or tilt. Wherethis is the case, whip pan becomesimpossible andminute framingadjustments difficult to achieve.

Vinten drag systems are designed tooffer complete camera control at anylevel of movement. Figure 1 shows howVinten drag systems provide a steepincrease in friction at the start of anymovement. This ensures that maximumcontrol is gained quickly: essential forslowmoves and fine framingadjustments. As themovement speedincreases a shallower friction curve iscreated, enabling the pan and tilt headto remain light and easy to move whilstthe shot continues to be controlled.

If the action changes out of shot Vinten’spatented drag systems allow instantwhip panmovement without any manualreduction of the drag. This is ideal forapplications such as sports coveragewhich require lower drag for followingthe close action and higher drag forlonger shots.

Vinten pan and tilt heads also offerinfinite, rather than stepped adjustment.This enables the camera operator toselect the drag level that suits theirworking requirements, rather than apre-determined level whichmay not.

Lubricated Friction [LF] Drag – Vision3AS, 5AS, 8AS, 10AS and Vector 90
