There is something about

the feminine silhouette of

the 40's figure and the

simple nature of easy to

make and wear clothes

that we 21st century

women can't get enough

of. These fashions were

timeless. They were com-

fortable. They were fun.

My magazine is based on World events and how

they affected and influenced Fashion in the 1940s.

There will be articles on Fashion in the 1940’s,

1940’s fashion today, Fashion Icons and many

more.

One might say that women's' fashions of the 1940's

were dictated by Adolph Hitler. The German inva-

sion of Poland in September 1939 set the tone for

everything that happened in the next decade.

As fashion follows social trends and the events of the

world economy,

World War II ne-

cessitated changes

in clothing styles

and fashion de-

sign. Pearl Har-

bour took place

on December 7,

1941 by which

time Germany had invaded Norway, Denmark, Hol-

land, Belgium, France, Yugoslavia, and Greece. The

To achieve the 1940s of today look of elegance

and affluence try pairing a basic dress or plain

tailored suit with some classic-style accesso-

ries. For the fashion-conscious, the simple

pearl necklace or pair of neutral pumps will

complete the look. The more fashion-daring

shopper should try sporting a wide brim hat or

driving gloves to make any outfit classic-chic.

Not just a designer,

not just a big name,

Coco Chanel was an

icon in the fashion in-

dustry— she was pas-

sionate about clothing

design and a trendset-

ter whose influence

can still be seen today.

By the middle of

1940, when Paris fell to the Nazis, Coco Chanel had

to close her boutiques and even served as a nurse

during WWII.

1940’s Fashion Today Another

influen-

tial fash-

ion de-

signer of the late 1940s was Christian Dior . He domi-

nated fashion after World War II with the hourglass

silhouette of his voluptuous ‘New Look’ Collection.

The new look was absolutely appropriate for the post-

war era. Dior was correct in assuming that people

wanted something new after years of war, brutality and

hardship. His new look was reminiscent of the Belle

Epoque ideal of long skirts, tiny waists and beautiful

fabrics that his mother had worn in the early 1900s.

FABRIC

Divorcing itself from dance music, bebop estab-

lished itself more as an art form, thus lessening

its potential popular and commercial appeal.

Dizzy Gillespie was one of the principal develop-

ers of bop in the early 1940s, and his styles of

improvising and trumpet playing were imitated

widely in the 1940s and 1950s. Indeed, he is one

of the most influential players in the history of

jazz.

Jazz Music

In 1943 I heard the great Earl Hines band

which had Bird in it and all those other great

musicians. They were playing all the flatted

fifth chords and all the modern harmonies

and substitutions and Dizzy Gillespie runs in

the trumpet section work. Two years later I

read that that was 'bop' and the beginning of

modern jazz ... but the band never made re-

cordings.

In the early 1940’s be-

bop-style performers

began to shift jazz from

danceable popular mu-

sic towards a more

challenging "musician's

music." Composer

Gunther Schuller

wrote:

Japanese silk

In order to supply the war effort, fabric was

rationed. Nylon and wool were both needed

by the military and Japanese silk was banned

in the USA after the attack on Pearl Har-

bour. Rayon, the new synthetic fabric devel-

oped in the 1930's became the material most

often used for the creation of ladies' clothing

during the War.

In 1946 Ava Gardner

played opposite Burt

Lancaster in The Kill-

ers, it was this film that

brought her wide notice

and she then became

known as a movie star

and sex symbol.

Billie Holiday was often pho-

tographed wearing her signa-

ture accessory: beautiful flow-

her curves with gorgeous,

body-skimming , printed, lacy

or bejewelled dresses.

FASHION ICONS artist's inner vision of reality.

During the late 1940s Jackson Pollock's radical

approach to painting revolutionized the potential

for all Contemporary art that followed him.

On his website you can create your own abstract

art , I did so and here is my very own Jackson

Pollock painting.

1940s ART

Abstract Expressionism is an American art move-

ment of the 1940s that emphasized form and col-

our within a nonrepresentational framework.

Jackson Pollock initiated the revolutionary tech-

nique of splattering the paint directly on canvas to

achieve the subconscious interpretation of the

Veronica Lake was a

popular fashion icon and

actress during the 1940's

and sported lots of the

glossy hairstyles we now

associate with the 1940's

pin up actresses.

Lana Turner is my favour-

During World War II,

Turner became a popular

pin-up girl due to her

popularity in such films

such as Ziegfeld Girl
