Vincent van Gogh meets techno poetryHe sold just one painting during his own lifetime. Yet 125 years after his death on July 29,1890, the Dutch painter still continues to inspire. See how technology is breathing new lifeinto his works.
Although he lived in extreme poverty, Vincent Van Gogh is now one of the most popular artists ever.
The international icon is getting even more attention this year, as 2015 marks the 125th anniversary of
his death. Over 30 European institutions are highlighting the painter's work under the common theme
"125 years of inspiration."
New immersive works inspired by Van Gogh are in trend. Brooklyn animator Mackenzie Cauley turned
the painting "The Night Café" in a 3D world.
"Van Gogh Alive The Experience," a traveling multimedia exhibition currently on show in Berlin,
features over 3,000 oversized images by the artist displayed on giant screens.
Another impressive modern tribute to the painter is the Van Gogh bike path created by Daan
Roosegaarde. Inspired by the work "Starry Night," he designed patterns using a special paint which
glows in the dark, using energy gathered during the day.
In the studios of the film "Loving Vincent," an animated feature to be released in 2016, over 50 artists
are recreating his works to produce nearly 57,000 handpainted frames.

Van Gogh: How a tormented genius still inspires the world
A Van Gogh painting comes to life
Black sheep of the familyVincent was seen as a failure in the eyes of his family. Every profession he tried his hand at be it art dealer, naval officer or lay preacher he soon abandoned. When he moved to the small Belgian mining region ofBorinage in 1879 he tried to realize his vocational potential. There, he lodged with a family in Cuesmes andeked out an impoverished existence.
Seizing the penThe plight of the miners greatly impressed Van Gogh. Moreover, he identified with the people or Borinage the coal basin of Belgium. He blackened his face to appear as one of them. Finally, he reached for his pen anddocumented the lives of these impoverished people in somewhat clumsy sketches.

The lowest pointToday, only ruins are left of the Borinage coal mines the remainders of a dark time. Van Gogh traveled intothe mines to experience the hardship of the miners at 700 meters beneath the earth. He was shocked by thecramped conditions and the darkness and recounted his experience to his brother Theo.
Early works in the NetherlandsIn a roundabout way, he landed in Nuenen, where he took shelter with his parents who were reluctant to takehim in. He remained in Nuenen for two years from 1883 to 1885 where he painted fields and the famers atwork in bleak colors. He also painted simple potatoes without embellishment.

Simple subjectsIn Nuenen today a suburb of the neighboring city of Eindhoven he delighted in living a simple life. Hediscovered the theme of weavers as a motif, as well as simple and typical Nuenen architecture. For "The PotatoEaters" he produced sketches throughout the winter until the work was complete.
Nature and farmersVan Gogh painted at least one picture per day. Many of his works were full of melancholy some evencontained anatomical mistakes. In Nuenen he enjoyed the luxury of a private studio. It can be found beyondthe garden fence of the rectory (pictured) a simple garden shed, where he also painted "The Potato Eaters."

French inspirationNo one at the time could have imagined that this painter would become one of the world's most importantartists. After the death of his father, Vincent left Nuenen. With "The Potato Eaters" packed in his luggage, hemoved to Antwerp and then finally to Paris. With financial support from his brother Theo, he moved into ahumble dwelling and later in with Theo.
Experiments in colorOn February 20, 1888, he left the French capital, moving south in search of new light. With the right framingand contours, everyday scenes can become symbols. In contrast to fellow artists of the day, his color paletteexploded while in France: Red, yellow, green, blue, violet. He worked with complementary contrasts andhugely expressive lines and surfaces.
